Rutgers University Warns Students - "There Is No Such Thing As Free Speech"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Ironically, U.S. college campuses are rapidly becoming the least free, most censored places in the country. Many people have commented on this, including high profile, enormously talented comedians such as Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld. In fact, Chris Rock was so appalled that he stopped playing colleges because audiences had become “too conservative” Before getting all bent out of shape, this is what he meant:

Not in their political views — not like they’re voting Republican — but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody. Kids raised on a culture of “We’re not going to keep score in the game because we don’t want anybody to lose.” Or just ignoring race to a fault. You can’t say “the black kid over there.” No, it’s “the guy with the red shoes.” You can’t even be offensive on your way to being inoffensive.

Although I’ve touched upon this subject before, I haven’t given it nearly the amount of attention it deserves. That said, I would suggest rereading a powerful post published earlier this summer, A Professor Speaks Out – How Coddled, Hyper Sensitive Undergrads are Ruining College Learning. Here’s an excerpt:

Things have changed since I started teaching. The vibe is different. I wish there were a less blunt way to put this, but my students sometimes scare me — particularly the liberal ones.

I once saw an adjunct not get his contract renewed after students complained that he exposed them to “offensive” texts written by Edward Said and Mark Twain. His response, that the texts were meant to be a little upsetting, only fueled the students’ ire and sealed his fate.  That was enough to get me to comb through my syllabi and cut out anything I could see upsetting a coddled undergrad, texts ranging from Upton Sinclair to Maureen Tkacik — and I wasn’t the only one who made adjustments, either.

The current student-teacher dynamic has been shaped by a large confluence of factors, and perhaps the most important of these is the manner in which cultural studies and social justice writers have comported themselves in popular media. I have a great deal of respect for both of these fields, but their manifestations online, their desire to democratize complex fields of study by making them as digestible as a TGIF sitcom, has led to adoption of a totalizing, simplistic, unworkable, and ultimately stifling conception of social justice. The simplicity and absolutism of this conception has combined with the precarity of academic jobs to create higher ed’s current climate of fear, a heavily policed discourse of semantic sensitivity in which safety and comfort have become the ends and the means of the college experience.

Moving along to today’s post, I want to highlight two different stories that I came across today demonstrating just how far “higher education” has cratered in recent years. First, let’s turn to Rutgers University, whose “Bias Prevention & Education Committee (BPEC)” recently put out an alert that began with the following statement:

Screen Shot 2015-08-26 at 11.02.24 AM

Really, since when? I think a little document called the Constitution of the United States of America might have a different opinion.

Of course, as soon as this became publicized, the school removed that language. Reason reports that:

Rutgers University students, you are being watched.

That appears to be the message a Rutgers.edu web page would like the campus community to absorb. The web page is maintained by the Bias Prevention & Education Committee, which chillingly warns students that there is “no such thing as ‘free’ speech,” and to “think before you speak.” From the web page:

Since 1992, the Bias Prevention Committee has monitored the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus for bias incidents and has provided bias prevention education to staff, students, and faculty. …

Bias Acts Are:

Verbal, written, physical, psychological acts that threaten or harm a person or group on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, civil union status, domestic partnership status, atypical heredity or cellular blood trait, military service or veteran status.

If you experience or witness an act of bias or hate, report it to someone in authority. You may file a report on line at www.bias.rutgers.edu and you will be contacted within 24 hours.

Rutgers defines bias so broadly that all kinds of clearly protected speech would likely trigger an incident report and subsequent investigation by this Orwellian committee.

However, the university administration seems to be backing off some of the committee’s claims. When Campus Reform first reported the existence of the web page last week, it looked like this (Edit: Link fixed). By Monday, it looked like this. The difference? The university removed the assertion that there is no such thing as ‘free’ speech.

I suppose this means that administrators recently reviewed the page, and stand by the rest of its claims.

Of course, this is far from a one-off incident. This is becoming systemic at universities from sea to shining sea. The good news is that some people have had enough and are speaking out. One brave example is Alice Dreger, who just very publicly resigned from Northwestern University protesting the schools’ censorship. We learn from the Chronicle of Higher Education that:

Alice Dreger doesn’t usually pull punches. So it’s no surprise that her resignation letter is more, shall we say, direct than the average two weeks’ notice.

Ms. Dreger resigned this week from Northwestern University, where she was a clinical professor of medical humanities and bioethics, a nontenured gig she’d had for the past decade. In her letter, she writes that when she started at Northwestern, the university vigorously defended her academic freedom. Now, she contends, that’s no longer the case.

What prompted her departure was the fallout over an article by William Peace, who at the time was a visiting professor in the humanities at Syracuse University. Mr. Peace wrote an essay for an issue of the journal, Atrium, that Ms. Dreger guest-edited. The essay is a frank account of a nurse who helped Mr. Peace regain his sexual function after he was paralyzed.

According to Ms. Dreger, Eric G. Neilson, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the university’s school of medicine, tried to censor portions of the essay deemed too explicit. The essay is straightforward in its description of sex, and includes multiple mentions of “the dick police,” but the purpose is to illuminate what went on in the era prior to disability rights and studies.

In her letter, Ms. Dreger writes that the university allowed the essay to be published online only after she and Mr. Peace threatened to talk publicly about what they saw as censorship. She writes that she was “disgusted that the fear of bad publicity was apparently the only thing that could move this institution to stop censorship.”

She asked the university to acknowledge that attempting to remove portions of the essay was a mistake and to promise not to do so in the future. “They never acknowledged that the censorship was real,” Ms. Dreger said in an interview. “I wanted a concrete acknowledgment and assurance that my work would not be subject to monitoring.” That, she said, would have been enough for her to remain.

The idea that institutions must acknowledge wrongdoing is central to Ms. Dreger’s academic work. It’s a theme of her recent book Galileo’s Middle Finger: Heretics, Activists, and the Search for Justice in Science, which takes to task organizations that try to stifle academic freedom or single out scholars for their provocative views.

The idea that institutions must acknowledge wrongdoing is central to Ms. Dreger’s academic work.”

BINGO. This is so essential to a functioning, ethical society, and is something that never happens in modern America. Ever.

In case you doubt the firebrand that is Ms. Dreger, here’s an sample of one of her tweets from earlier today:

The Fabian methodology has proven accurate, bringing an alarming crescendo to the very present moment.
I'd suggest that it is exactly crap like this, dictatorial control disguised as political correctness attached to the state's furthering of the class and racial divides that will indeed be the historical cause clebre of the next violent revolution, which will culminate in an even greater police state.
Read Atwood's The Handmaiden's Tale.
'Nuff said.

Look on the bright side.  Even though there's "no such thing as free speech" in academia, college tuition is so much cheaper now than it was say 10, 20, 30 years ago.

I'd just like to offer Rutgers a little warning.

The university I attended was also a little over-the-top with political correctness and they ignored the constitution as they desired.  As a student I got hassled any number of times, white male privilege being what it is.

Now I'm an alumni and a very successful one.  The incessant begging for my money and my time falls on deaf ears.  I simply don't believe in any of their agenda and I find it harmful to this nation, this society and families in general.

If I had my way academia in the USA would be marched off campus, into the fields and given shovels.

I know Mao would approve.

I'm with you Maltese.  And knowing universities and committees as well as I do I would estimate that it took a million dollars of Alumni money to come up the this wording:

Verbal, written, physical, psychological acts that threaten or harm a person or group on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, civil union status, domestic partnership status, atypical heredity or cellular blood trait, military service or veteran status.

Apparently you also didn't learn any Latin at your fine institution of higher learning.  Alumnus is the masculine singular version.  You can't be an "alumni."  That's plural.

My alma mater just pulled it's statue of Fr. Pierre DeSmet for opressing the indians and erected a memorial for Michael Brown. Not only do they no longer get my money they don't get my children either.

And while a generalized statement, the professors and academia are suffering under the very movement they started. So tough titties.

It's not about pill-pushing. Bioethicists whoring for the medical industrial complex will churn out biased study after biased study on how surrogacy is great and harms no one, how artificial insemination is a boon to humankind, how abortion campaigns are going to save us all, how euthanasia is a "human right", how using human embryos for research or even agribusiness is perfectly ethical and can "save lives", etc.
To sum it all up, they are quack experts heftily paid by big pharma, surgeons lobbies, planned parenthood, etc, to lie through their teeth.

Workplaces are becoming just as Orwellian and it's happen rapidly. Just a couple weeks ago I and other employees had to sit through a video about how courts have rapidly been expanding the definition of a hostile workplace (discrimination against those over 40 and under 40, for example) and now even criminal penalties can result. The person hosting the video made it sound like arrest could occur for anyone who is deemed to have created a hostile work environment by offending some group. Being insensitive or offensive is now considered by the courts to be a form of workplace harassment and violence.

Yes, but these cock suckers are much worse. The generations before them were disciplinarians but they drew clear lines between what is resolved by the family and what is resolved by the government.
They were also not intrusive. These bastards are extremely intrusive and extremely intolerant.
They claim to be tolerant but the only thing they tolerate is views like their own, and are extremely intolerant of view that are opposite, especially if those views are what used to be the norm before they flipped it upside down.

I spent my career in tech. I have no Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin etc. At one point I worked for a private company that accumulated info on you from ALL the available sources; phone comapny, utilities, birth, death, insurance, on and on. Not only do you not want a social media footprint, you want to contact everyone and tell them you do not want them to share your information with anyone. That includes the credit rating agencies, the credit card companies, the banks/brokerages, DMV. Call them - they will know what you are talking about. You need to shut it down by yourself / for yourself. (At the same time I am on ZH - so take me with a grain of salt).

This is what you get from a media (and by extension a media brainwashed herd of sheeple) that coddles to the feminazis and blacks and homosexuals who constantly claim prejudice every single time something negative happens to them. I am all for people not being treated like shit for simple things like who they fuck or their skin colour but it's clear people have taken this shit too far and people are crying sexism or racism or homophobia over every fucking thing and anyone who dare tells them to shut the fuck up is vilified so these rational people usually stay quiet.

Then to go with that you have the white knight pussy whipped bitch men who long lost their balls to women (pussy is not magical to justify acting like a slave to women), the white guilters who feel they need to make up for slavery close to 2 centuries ago that they didn't take part in and the hetero LGBT activists who just can't grasp most people don't give a shit about one's sexual preference yet go and imply everyone does and it just makes the whole thing twice as pathetic.

Humanity was lost long ago and it'll be funny how things are in a few decades if this shit keeps getting worse which it probably will unelss many who pretend to be all PC can't put up with the bullshit act and accept they are just talking animals with the same animal instincts and will refuse trying to act like something they naturally aren't.

Good post, but this "racism," "homophobia," and "sexism" stuff is just part of their active plan to divide and distract us, and keep us divided, so as to prevent us from discovering them, tyranny, as the true enemy; To prevent us from uniting against them. Do not be swayed by their propaganda--Don't drink their Kool-Aid.

The answer is to think. Think and realize that the enemy is only those aggressing against you and yours on a daily, and second by second basis, tyranny.

Additionally, a well armed and strong citizenry should not allow themselves to be duped into fearing some niggers, homos, or feminazis anyways--Are we mice, or well armed Americans; Lions?

Read Sun Tzu's The Art of War, as our enemies are following it in their war against us, and we need to follow it in our war against them.

Zion is a scheme, not an ethnicity..

Allowing the enemy to dictate who the enemy is, is a lot like running from a spider in a tree, and then stepping on a snake--ignore the spider in the tree, and keep looking for snakes.

excellent loregnum - however, the wave of PC that you mention observing is blowback from the population as a whole and the white caucasians in the US for overlooking the weakness and unjustness of the prohibition laws.  It cannot be overstated that the because the consciousness-expanding nutrient plants/drugs/medicines/inebriants have been outlawed, those operating as human are most likely matrix sheeple as the programming within the matrix has been fairly successful thus far ... however, seems like a general consensus that the likelihood of a near-term reset/change of significance is greater than 50/50.

If they are going to be plumbers or electricians you need to have them take spanish in high school.

Spanish speakers are quickly moving into the plumbing arena and have made inroads into electricians (not high voltage).  Too many have been pushed into welding and now the pay sucks as well.

Just have them talk to the average worker bee's, not the owners, or their chosen trade and have them ask about certain employee trends and not just pay scale.

I tell people it is good to learn a "trade" as backup unless you can become the owner of a small company doing it.

At least in my time which was only a few years ago, the school wasn't politically active. It also was ranked as one of the least most politically active schools in the country. I suppose things have changed.. They barely got the anti-Iraq war protests off the ground there in '07., then it was the "nappy-headed hoes" incident with the women's basketball coach, then the gay guy that jumped off the George Washington Bridge cause someone filmed him without consent engaging in sex. During those years there were big budget cuts and a few departments closed and professors got laid off. Again I say, things have changed.

Two thoughts:

1. It takes one million micro-aggressions to equal a whole aggression, so save yourself the effort and tell them: "Kindly fuck right off with your nonsense." You'll be saving yourself a whole lot of time and them a whole lot of effort moving goalposts and attempting to reconcile their own logical fallacies.

2. If this thinking paradigm were an accident, it would have already been identified as such and corrected.

I once saw an adjunct not get his contract renewed after students complained that he exposed them to “offensive” texts written by Edward Said and Mark Twain. His response, that the texts were meant to be a little upsetting, only fueled the students’ ire and sealed his fate.

What kind of education is it when you are never forced to think?  The appropriate response for the university in this case would be to expell the student as obviously he/she is not intelligent enought to attend.

I think if you look at the background of said professors you'd find a lack of solid world experience in most fields. The loftiness of their positions and pay accentuates their distorted self worth. Since they only fraternize with each other, their worlds are never challenged.

I can't say my college experience was useless but I must admit the grand majority of my training was on job. College provided a foundational understanding but working in the real world was more important in my career.

I was most appreciative to have had the experience of a Classical Education and had to defend my premises and respond to criticism well. College is supposed to teach you how to think not indoctrinate. I had countless times in the stacks coming up with rebuttals to criticisms made by professors. Sadly, I see so many college kids today just being asked to regurgitate facts which is just a waste of time. They seems so pliant when college should be a time to question status quo, forge new paths and arguing presentations not blindly accepting a professor's interpretation.

However, I've lost a few jobs being a rabble rouser so what do I know.

Most of higher education is still based on an antiquated model developed when books were books and knowledge were in short supply.  With today's technology knowledge is widely available and should be nearly free, but instead it increases in cost 10% every year and turns out too many semi-literate grads (just read some of their resumes) with useless degrees and feeds the P.C. monster in the process.  If ever there was a time to revolutionize the education process it is now.

It's not so much that he's a moron; he's actually pretty bright. But he dare not speak out against any aspect of Cultural Marxism, or his access to the Hollywood gravy train will be revoked immediately.

EVERYTHING bad must always be framed in terms of 'conservative.' Anyone who (rightly) ties the narrow-mindedness of today's generation to the Marxist worldview which caused it will be bodily flung from the top of Olympus.

And he knows it. That's why he says "conservative" and then backpedals and describes 'progressive' whiners to a T.

Fortunately, I do believe the tide is turning against Cultural Marxism. It's turning slowly, for sure. But a growing number of people are simply fed the fuck up with it. Unfortunately, the weak-willed and weak-minded, who eat that shit up with a spoon by nature, are basically going to have to be beaten into surrender, in one way or another.

Step one is to get the Cultural Marxists out of positions of power: elected office, journalism and education at all levels. The main obsticle is that psychopaths and sociopaths hunger for power over others in a way that normal humans simply cannot. We've got to come up with a way for humans to overwhelmingly prevail against the pathological when competing for these and other 'power' positions.

Few understand the influence of the Neocons in our government who are behind the “political correctness” movement.

The agenda of these fascists pervade our news, movies and education.  It all goes back to fascists like grand daddy Prescott Bush during WW2 who was charged with financing Hitler through his Wall St Union Bank.

After WW2 many SS and top Gestapo agents like Reinhard Ghelen, were secretly emigrated and employed in our new CIA in 1947 under the secret Operation Paper Clip.

Most sheeple don’t know or don’t want to know about the fascists in our government because in the famous words of Jack Nickolson, they “can’t handle the truth”.

This group of secret fascists were the seed of our current Neocon Political Movement led by George Bush sr & jr, Rumsfeld, Cheney and several think tanks such as the Project for the New American Century (PNAC).

These are the fascists that wrote about needing “A new pearl harbor” a year before 9-11.  A false-flag terror event that stood down individual liberties and cemented their death-grip control over America.

The political correctness movement of these neo-nazis revolves around protecting and expanding minority populations.

Few Americans understand the political control mechanism known as Balkanization, a pejorative geopolitical term, originally used to

describe the process of fragmentation or division of a region or state into smaller regions or states that are often hostile or non-cooperative with one another.

It’s basically a divide and conquer strategy by building up competing and conflicting groups you lessen the chance of one majority challenging your dominance.

Challenging the dominance of the ruling class was described in Ms Dreger’s Galileo’s Middle Finger as Galileo was accused of being a heretic for asserting that the earth revolved around the sun.  As I said in an earlier piece.

“Interesting that Galileo was suppressed by the church not for his new beliefs about the sun and the earth.  He was declared a heretic because his beliefs didn't come through the church and came through his own reasoning.

The ruling class that controlled the Vatican at the top, feared an individual's reasoning and critical thinking skills.

Their greatest threat was critical and clear thinking people that cared to investigate and remove the political and religious parasites feeding off the public's wealth, that represented the source of their power.”

But so are the 'progressives' at the heart of the problem because really, it's all the same collectivist, elitist, parasitic shit.
