If you've ever lived on public assistance for even a short time, you know what a pain in the ass it is and you did it for the very shortest time you possibly could. It is absolutely not living large. Nobody who has a choice does it.
These urban legends all omit a key fact. For instance, the hypothetical man's name is going to be on the birth certificate, shooting down the entire rest of the premise. How is the guy going to buy a house? If he did buy a house, Section 8's $900/mo. doesn't pay the mortgage. And if the guy rents it out, he has to qualify to receive Section 8 funds. That means his finances are disclosed. He's not paying a homestead rate on property tax.
All the "free" stuff "Girlfriend" gets ain't free. And it overlooks the obvious. How is "Girlfriend" going to college "for free?" Who's watching the kids? Do they do that for free too? Last time I saw, a baby costs about $200/week for daycare. This "Girlfriend" has 3 kids? Unless they're in public school, that's $500/wk. in daycare alone. Sure, there are subsidies, but now you're so far into the web of the system you're never getting out.
If Girlfriend and Guy are living in the same house, each claiming a kid or two and Head of Household, they're going to get busted and he'll have to repay every penny of assistance she's gotten. You don't just "get" Disability. I know a guy, former airline pilot, who had a deteriorating spinal condition. He's had almost every vertebra fused. He lives on Oxycontin and he can barely move. It took him 3 years and the last $50,000 he could dig up for an attorney to get him Disability. Anyone would have marked him for 100% disabled from 100 feet away.
And then the Pell Grant fantasy at the end is a nice touch. As if that's how it works. The total Dollar figure of all these benefits is a very popular meme, and it's full of shit. The dollar value of a falling-down slum apartment? No doubt it's just what the landlord, maybe Blackrock, says it is, right? Is it poor people's fault that health care, and therefore health insurance, costs more than people can afford to pay?
All in all, this is a classic diversionary piece of slop. Deflect any attention from the broken system that is screwing everyone, and convince those of us who feel vulnerable to impoverishment that our real enemy isn't the one who is living large at our expense, but those who are truly impoverished, and whose lives we wouldn't trade for in a million years if we really looked at them and how they live. If we knew any people in this situation, that is to say.

Or we could do what they simply do in India, China, or a host of other countries and if you are elderly and get sick (say canncer) and can't afford the large out-of-pocket costs of chemo drugs and related care you die. If you want to cut to brass tacks, the amount of resources we shift on supporting the elderly (who are the least productive members of society by a large way since most elderly by 70 can't hold a full-time job due to physical or mental limitations) is a huge problem too in lue of improving infrastructure or investing at comparative levels in the elderly.

Welfare + SS + Medicare/caid consumes more than half of spending. Military is ~20%. Regardless, to balance this every sector is gonna get cut, and every socioeconomic strata is going to feel the hurt when we transition. I don't feel super-contemptuous toward welfarites, but they are going to have to get their bennies cut when reality forces a sane economy.
I remember back when I was more active politically and my org. was talking with a Senate candidate about the issues that mattered to him. He was going on about the debt, so I ask him, given the size of the debt, won't we have to reduce the scope of government, and given this, which federal departments would he abolish/cut more than 50%?

First of all, SNAP benefit is in no way near $200/person (the article claims $600 for single mother & 2 dependents. As you may remember the Republican leadership, just earlier this year reduced SNAP benefits by more than 10%. An another additional reduction was made within the last 3 months of 25% additionally. Maybe you cocksuckers down at the propaganda mill should try sustaining yourself on a food allotment (again for 3 participants) of only $400, an allotment closer to today's reality.
There are other programs available to enroll your dependents into so they will get a free lunch, and free breakfast, it is a different program, of which the propagandist, did not choose to include, rather the lies seem so much more convincing when painted with broad strokes of gray. To perpetuate the continued lies that propaganda inherently does, the author somehow forgot that the SNAP recipient must re-apply for the benefit at least every 6 months, always being subject to audit & or home inspection, by the Dept. of Human Services, and subject to reduce or increase benefit if circumstance changes, of which you must notify DHS of said change or face potential loss of benefit and even expulsion from said programs. (for example the fraudsters in the article's example, could lose it all overnight, and be expelled from further participation~~~the author did intend for us to believe these young folks are fraudsters, not actually in need of any program services~~~)
Are there other programs that allot for utilities & rent, of course, but again the propaganda of lies leaves out the part that you better have the actual bills for such utilities and rent to prove your recent usage, all required before you ever get a nickle from the government, and only the most recent & current bills will do, and continuously subject to audit, if any circumstance changes.
Oh and the propagandist lies somehow expect the reader to believe that: a. the young man has the ability to 'buy a house' in the first place b. has provided all the necessary documentation of the house being qualified and passing a qualification inspection by that arm of the DHS, of which is subject to audit & re-application. p.s. marital status has a real effect on audits, which ties both spouses, or anyone else that may be living in the domicile into 'the program audit', this includes up-to-date paycheck stubs, insurance status, child support status/judgements/, and many, many other audit qualifications.

If you lived here, you would know that most people here work hard for a living, unlike other countries where people get tons of vacation time, retire early, and then wonder how they ended up like Greece. It is for the people who work hard - when they fall on hard times these programs are beneficial and necessary. Do they need to be regulated more? Yes, agree, but saying this is the new way of life for Americans is completely inaccurate. Abuse of government beneficial systems exists everywhere, not just in the U.S.
