Russian Military Forces Arrive In Syria, Set Forward Operating Base Near Damascus

Tyler Durden's picture

While military direct intervention by US, Turkish, and Gulf forces over Syrian soil escalates with every passing day, even as Islamic State forces capture increasingly more sovereign territory, in the central part of the country, the Nusra Front dominant in the northwestern region province of Idlib and the official "rebel" forces in close proximity to Damascus, the biggest question on everyone's lips has been one: would Putin abandon his protege, Syria's president Assad, to western "liberators" in the process ceding control over Syrian territory which for years had been a Russian national interest as it prevented the passage of regional pipelines from Qatar and Saudi Arabia into Europe, in the process eliminating Gazprom's - and Russia's - influence over the continent.

As recently as a month ago, the surprising answer appeared to be an unexpected "yes", as we described in detail in "The End Draws Near For Syria's Assad As Putin's Patience "Wears Thin." Which would make no sense: why would Putin abdicate a carefully cultivated relationship, one which served both sides (Russia exported weapons, provides military support, and in exchange got a right of first and only refusal on any traversing pipelines through Syria) for years, just to take a gamble on an unknown future when the only aggressor was a jihadist spinoff which had been created as byproduct of US intervention in the region with the specific intention of achieving precisely this outcome: overthrowing Assad (see "Secret Pentagon Report Reveals US "Created" ISIS As A "Tool" To Overthrow Syria's President Assad").

As it turns out, it may all have been just a ruse. Because as Ynet reports, not only has Putin not turned his back on Assad, or Syria, but the Russian reinforcements are well on their way. Reinforcements for what? Why to fight the evil Islamic jihadists from ISIS of course, the same artificially created group of bogeyman that the US, Turkey, and Saudis are all all fighting. In fact, this may be the first world war in which everyone is "fighting" an opponent that everyone knows is a proxy for something else.

According to Ynet, Russian fighter pilots are expected to begin arriving in Syria in the coming days, and will fly their Russian air force fighter jets and attack helicopters against ISIS and rebel-aligned targets within the failing state.

And just like the US and Turkish air forces are supposedly in the region to "eradicate the ISIS threat", there can't be any possible complaints that Russia has also decided to take its fight to the jihadists - even if it is doing so from the territory of what the real goal of US and Turkish intervention is - Syria. After all, it is a free for all against ISIS, right?

From Ynet:

According to Western diplomats, a Russian expeditionary force has already arrived in Syria and set up camp in an Assad-controlled airbase. The base is said to be in area surrounding Damascus, and will serve, for all intents and purposes, as a Russian forward operating base.

In the coming weeks thousands of Russian military personnel are set to touch down in Syria, including advisors, instructors, logistics personnel, technical personnel, members of the aerial protection division, and the pilots who will operate the aircraft.

The Israeli outlet needless adds that while the current makeup of the Russian expeditionary force is still unknown, "there is no doubt that Russian pilots flying combat missions in Syrian skies will definitely change the existing dynamics in the Middle East."

Why certainly: because in one move Putin, who until this moment had been curiously non-commital over Syria's various internal and exteranl wars, just made the one move the puts everyone else in check: with Russian forces in Damascus implicitly supporting and guarding Assad, the western plan instantly falls apart.

It gets better: if what Ynet reports is accurate, Iran's brief tenure as Obama's BFF in the middle east is about to expire:

Western diplomatic sources recently reported that a series of negotiations had been held between the Russians and the Iranians, mainly focusing on ISIS and the threat it poses to the Assad regime. The infamous Iranian Quds Force commander Major General Qasem Soleimani recently visited Moscow in the framework of these talks. As a result the Russians and the Iranians reached a strategic decision: Make any effort necessary to preserve Assad's seat of power, so that Syria may act as a barrier, and prevent the spread of ISIS and Islamist backed militias into the former Soviet Islamic republics.

See: the red herring that is ISIS can be used just as effectively for defensive purposes as for offensive ones. And since the US can't possibly admit the whole situation is one made up farce, it is quite possible that the world will witness its first regional war when everyone is fighting a dummy, proxy enemy which doesn't really exist, when in reality everyone is fighting everyone else!

That said, we look forward to Obama explaining the American people how the US is collaborating with the one mid-east entity that is supporting not only Syria, but now is explicitly backing Putin as well.

It gets better: Ynet adds that "Western diplomatic sources have emphasized that the Obama administration is fully aware of the Russian intent to intervene directly in Syria, but has yet to issue any reaction... The Iranians and the Russians- with the US well aware- have begun the struggle to reequip the Syrian army, which has been left in tatters by the civil war. They intend not only to train Assad's army, but to also equip it. During the entire duration of the civil war, the Russians have consistently sent a weapons supply ship to the Russian held port of Tartus in Syria on a weekly basis. The ships would bring missiles, replacement parts, and different types of ammunition for the Syrian army."

Finally, it appears not only the US military-industrial complex is set to profit from the upcoming war: Russian dockbuilders will also be rewarded:

Arab media outlets have recently published reports that Syria and Russia were looking for an additional port on the Syrian coast, which will serve the Russians in their mission to hasten the pace of the Syrian rearmament.

If all of the above is correct, the situation in the middle-east is set to escalate very rapidly over the next few months, and is likely set to return to the face-off last seen in the summer of 2013 when the US and Russian navies were within earshot of each other, just off the coast of Syria, and only a last minute bungled intervention by Kerry avoided the escalation into all out war. Let's hope Kerry has it in him to make the same mistake twice.

Tyler,

+1000

You get a big thumbs up on this summary of the situation.

This is what happens when liberal dindu community activists with no real experience except shaking down the system and buggering other men are put in charge, then surround themselves with the most anti-American talent this country has to offer. Similar results can be seen in major cities across the United States.

Remember: Liberalism is a disease that needs to be eradicated.

Get vaccinated in 2016.   Vote TRUMP.

The US has had months to push ISIS back but instead, keeps accidentally dropping weapons to them.

Let's see if Putin can wipe out ISIS in a matter of weeks.

Can't wait to see the looks on the faces of the craven Western elite.

The pity is Putin didn't act months ago, before the refugee crisis in Europe, but I guess he had to let the EU stew for a while.

Also Putin could have saved the ancient monument at Palmyra. A great shame.

No Russian jets were deployed to Syria in order to launch attacks against Islamic State militants (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) and Syrian rebels, a military source told RT, dismissing reports in Israeli media.

It would apprear that Russia simply has no interest in being overrun by 'economic migrants' and 'asylum seekers' as the Europeans and (to a lesser(?) extent) the US are.

In fact: intensifying the turnoil and pushing/routing more of the displaced hordes into Europe will make Europe weaker -and make Russia's position stronger.

Sure, just like the Russians, er, Soviet empire wiped out those pesky folks in Afghanistan a generation ago. Or the US and how it spent a few trillion dollars and thousands of lives to win the hearts and minds of Iraqi's and Afghani's. That worked out well didn't it? The ME is an entirely different place when it comes to war making and Putin will find himself mired in Syria for years just like his predecessors were mired in Afghanistan.

At that time the USSR--a Western creation in itself--was being weakened by a government still beholden to its Western central banker slave masters.

While the Soviets were in Afghanistan, Brzhzhenz-whatever saw an opportunity to wipe them out, so he funneled weapons to the Taliban tribesmen via his CIA buddy Tim Osman, better known as Osama bin Ladin.

The situation with Putin is quite peculiar. Putin is a great friend of Israel. Many of his friend oligarchs are Jew. But:

  • Stalin created the state of Israel. But Zionist has crossed Stalin and he almost has done to them what Hitler was never even dreaming about. But Jews, Zionist, and Israel were very lucky, Stalin has died or was killed just months before declaring all out war against them.
  • It appears that Putin finds himself in a similar situation.
  • Furthermore, Putin cannot fight alone in the Middle East. He desperately needs Iran and Iran needs Russia creating a very explosive situation in the Middle East region.
  • There are also China who was siting on a fence for too long.

WE are about to become witnesses of a very interesting drama.

The West no longer produces actual men as leaders, only poor copies. Men like Putin and Trump (non-cucked, white, heterosexual males) threaten the careful Marxist fake fag narrative of "us all being the same". So we get leaders like Hollande, Cameron, Obama, Abbott and Merkel, not to mention the simps and male twats on the local levels in the USSA.

Interesting observation, Ms. Erable.

This was the most significant part of the entire YNet article to me:

The Russians do not harbor offensive intentions towards Israel or other sovereign states in the area, and their main stated goal is battling ISIS and preserving Assad's rule. However, their presence will represent a challenge to the Israeli Air Force's freedom of operation in the skies above the Middle East.

The one single biggest thing that has changed is that Israel lost its ability to overfly or operate in and near Syria with impunity. Israel's goal all along has been to have Assad killed and replaced with an Israeli-friendly U.S. puppet. That's not going to happen now.

Worse yet, Israel's plans to annex more Syrian land beyond the Golan is finished. That plan was linked at the hip with their ultimate goal of controlling the Arab Gas Pipeline that will run from Jordan through Syria to Turkey. Israel has to face the real possibility that they will never get their grubby paws on it now. The fake ISIS and fake al Nusra U.S./Israeli ploy to delay the pipeline's completion across the Northern Syrian border at Killis is failing now thanks to the Kurds.

It is NO coincidence that this happened right after Eni's announced 'discovery' of the supergiant Zohr gas field off of Egypt (which was no secret to anybody). Suddenly, the Arab Gas Pipeline becomes very, very important. It always was important to Russia. Check out this article from 2010: Gazprom may join Arab Gas Pipeline . If I had to finger a tipping-point that forced the Israeli/U.S./Gulf State-sponsored Syrian Revolution, it was events that stoked their fear of never being able to cotrol that pipeline. That fear consumed them in late 2010, and the unrest leading to the civil war started in early 2011.

Israel and Noble Energy's seeming monopoly on East Mediterranean gas is slipping away. The millions of innocent brown people and U.S. soldiers they killed to secure their Middle East pipeline routes died for nothing. They needed to pull a serious false-flag out of their ass to save their pet project and they failed so far.

Now it's too late - they have permanently screwed the pooch. Even Israel's planned Lebanese invasion is useless now.

Always enjoy the analysis.

My only question is how the Egypt-ENI mega gas fields will be connected to Russia or Gazprom for export to Europe??

Okay I see the link. Isn't Jordan controlled by Bibi's gang?  Also how does it get from kilis in Syria to Europe.  It still seems like Russia cannot get the pipeline to Europe unless they go through Turkey

Turkey's existing gas pipeline infrastructure leads all the way to the Greek and Bulgarian borders. From there, either the proposed SouthStream or NABUCCO West to get from Turkey to the proposed Austrian hub.

There are a few possibilities. I think the intent would be to get it to the compressor station at Sivas through Kahramanmara and then follow the existing pipelines near the old NABUCCO route. It would involve either finishing one of the proposed links to Syria, or just building a dedicated pipeline to get to the proposed NABUCCO or TANAP route. NABUCCO may never get built - the route is what's important. Alternatively, they could build something from Kilis directly to Ankara.

Jordan is easily bought, needs it's own gas and wants the money from gas and oil transit. They will cooperate with Israel and the U.S. only as long as they benefit and it suits them. Ultimately, Israel needs a pipeline for its Leviathan gas to go North. They can only exert so much pressure on Jordan before Jordan goes ballistic and refuses to handle their gas.

Erdogan was the one who had to make up his mind. Like all U.S. tyrannical dictator puppets, his corruption got the better of him - now he's lost all of Turkey.

Erdogan is finished. Another corrupt U.S. lackey to be tossed into the dustbin of history. The Kurds will have their country in Southern Turkey when the rest of the Turks finally burn Erdogan's house down. The U.S. and Russia are waiting for the next government in Turkey to emerge - that's who they will have to do business with in the future.

ENI can connect to the Tunisian gas pipeline to Sicily.

I don't think the Israelis are welcome there. Their route would be on the sea bed of the Adriatic to Croatia.  It's hard to imagine Erdogan would let them cross Turkey.

That leaves the Israelis either crossing Russia on the east or under the Mediterranean on the west.

Israel USES the Kurds

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 11:44 | 6494657 Paveway IV
Paveway IV's picture

They use the Iraqi Kurds because they expect to get oil from the Mosul-Haifa pipeline, and the Iraqi Kurds know this.

The Iraqi Kurds need weapons and support to secure their territory. They tolerate their own Kurdish oligarchs and their sleazy dealings with Israel/U.S./U.K. interests, but the Iraqi Kurds don't tolerate oligarchs well. They will dispose of their own oligarchs when it suits them and Israel/U.S./U.K. contracts will be shredded.

The Rojava Kurds in Syrian are completely different - dirt farmers fighting for their own and their neighbor's homes. Nobody uses them, not even the U.S... Fuck with the Rojava and you will die. I know the U.S. MSM has been spoon-feeding the U.S. public color pieces on our 'support' for the Rojava Kurds, but it's a joke. The U.S. does nothing of the sort aside from a few airstrikes.

Look at pictures of the Rojava (especially the Rojava women snipers). Anything wrong with those pictures? Count the number of U.S. sniper/anti-armor rifles (none) vs. the number of new Russian sniper rifles (almost all). The Rojava have good memories - they will remeber who gave them the weapons they needed (Russia) and who parachuted weapons to their enemies (U.K./U.S.).

Now say you were a Rojava Kurd and were kicking ISIS ass all over North Syria. You need to hook up with your Rojava buds in the Western-most canton: Afrin. That way, you can control the Syrian-Turkish border and kill anyone trying to supply ISIS. Instead of help from the U.S., the U.S. has gone full-retard trying to keep it's terrorist supply corridor from Aleppo to Turkey open, preventing the Rojava from uniting the northern cantons. Worse yet, Turkish tanks are rolling into that 'terrorist safety-zone' they declared in Syria with tacit approval from the U.S. In other words, the U.S. and Turkey are actively preventing the Rojava Kurds and the Syrian Army from closing the border.

When the dust settles, it will only have been Russia that ACTUALLY helped the Rojava Kurds defeat ISIS, not the U.S. (despite MSM stenography to the contrary). While Obama was playing checkers...

Europeans aren't waking up to anything and are, or will be too consumed with their own problems to notice anything outside their own borders. Nobody is looking into this either. I'm in the Netherlands and people seem blissfully unaware of what's going on around them. The news isn't helping either...there's a lack of journalism but it's a symptom of people not giving a shit. Everything here seems good, everything out there miserably bad so people are turning inwards.

Politically no-one is looking beyond the neoliberal paradigm and no-one is willing to change enough to accommodate the future. That's European conservatism, it's not so much political or principled, just a very strong drive to hold on to what's left.  In that sense everybody is turning conservative. We're clinging to the EU, desperately citing the most ridiculous and logic defying 'advantages'. The cruel joke is that the EU is a glaringly failed project, and it's because of that attitude that it did (long story) but no-one will admit that until it truly falls apart. And when formerly comfortable Europeans have their last straw of hope crushed, watch things get really nasty really fast.

Remember this:

1929: wall street crash

1933: Hitler gets elected

4 years, in a time people only had radio and newspapers.

From NoDebt:  "And, by the way, what happened to all those bullshit pundits who said Vlad was ready to give up Assad?  <crickets>"

That would be me for one.  Putin has not done anything but profit from this war.  He has not provided any direct action whatsoever, not a single bullet, missile, bomb or anything fired by a Russian.  A lot of maybe's and he's gonna do it now talk, nothing else.

A few weeks ago Putin invited the leaders of the insurgents to russia to ask them to consider his input on the post Assad Syria.  He was clearly willing and offering to give up Assad.

There is no reason to believe any of this will be as the article claims based upon past actions.  This could just as easily be part of the agreed to terms for Putin betraying Assad.  Russia gets a place in the new Syria as it is divided up, as will others.  Taking a little of it for Russia, for now.

Any indication or press put out there in the near future about a "transition" or "compromise" or "peace plan" in Syria fronted by Putin means betrayal of Assad.  And means Putin has once again cooperated with the zionist.

On the other hand:  If Putin starts bombing the insurgents with effect and not just a few specific groups of insurgents then this may be something.  Remember the zionist bomb some of the insurgents as they are not part of the group under the zionist control and Putin could just cooperate in that effort for the final takeover (negotiated peace it will be called) of Syria.

If Putin bombs ALL the insurgents and pushing them ALL backwards from where they came then it is likely on.  Combine that with the attacks against China and this starts to look very significant indeed.

Wait until Putin actually does something and evaluate the intent of what he actually did.  His/Russia's past give cause for extreme skepticism and caution of true intent.

I bet all the armchair genius conspiracy types here don't know shit about what is going to happen. Predicting conflicts in the Middle East is like predicting rain in the Amazon. What is not known are all the forces at work that are visible and invisible. Not one of you geniuses can reliably say what we will see 5 years, 1 year or 1 month from now.

What I will assert is that nothing in this region is going according to anyone's script long or short term. Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, ISIS, Israel, Libya, Egypt, dictators, insurgents, Kurdish separatists, Sunni, Alawhite, Shia, Tribe A, Tribe B., and so on. There are a thousand variables except the weather. That will be reliably hot and dry with occassional dust storms.

I think everyone is more or less in an act-and-react mode and all players are constantly reevaluating relationships. And that is the very heart of the problem. No one from Obama and Putin on down can be too certain of how any particular intervention is going to work out. Arm the rebels and you suddenly get an ISIS. Then we find ourselves with similar interests to Iran as they overrrun Iraq. Depose a Qaddafi and then we have a dead ambassador and tribal gang-rule.

I read all the conspiracies here and the certainty in the tones and I have to laugh.

Make your best guess but couch them in some probabilities rather than certainty.

Isaiah 17:1-3 — “The oracle concerning Damascus. ‘Behold, Damascus is about to be removed from being a city and will become a fallen ruin. The cities of  Aroer are forsaken; they will be for flocks to lie down in, and there will be  no one to frightenthem. The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and sovereignty from Damascus….'”

Jeremiah 49:23-27 — “Concerning Damascus. ‘Hamath andArpad are put to shame, for they have heard bad news; they are disheartened. There is anxiety by the sea, it cannot be calmed. Damascus has become helpless; she has turned away to flee, and panic has gripped her; distress and pangs have taken hold of her like a woman in childbirth. How the  city of praise has not been deserted, the town of My joy! Therefore, her young men will fall in her streets, and all the men of war will be silenced in that day,’ declares the Lord of hosts. ‘I will  set fire to the wall of Damascus, and it will devour the fortified towers of Ben-hadad.'”

These prophecies have not yet been fulfilled. Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth. It has been attacked, besieged, and conquered. But Damascus has never been completely destroyed and left uninhabited. Yet that is exactly what the Bible says will happen. The context of Isaiah 17 and Jeremiah 49 are a series of End Times prophecies dealing with God’s judgments on Israel’s neighbors and enemies leading up to — and through — the Tribulation.

Stumpy4516's picture

You mlust not have noticed I had already posted (scroll up a bit) 4 hrs earlier.

Where is Putin?  Are they on the ground?

What is Putin's true intent?  Is it to be there at the air port next to the capital when Assad is taken out?  In order to get a piece of the pie.

Is this part of the agreement he negotiated with the leaders of the insurgents?  Remember that just a few weeks ago Putin hosted the leaders of the insurgents to negotiate the structure of the new Syria.  This is just as likely a part of that agreement.

Where are the missiles that Syria contracted with Russia for in 2007?  Putin never has delivered those missiles.  If Putin truely intended to support Asssad would those missiles not have been in Syria years ago.  They STILL are not there.

It is just as (actually much more likely) that this is part of an agreement Putin has reached with the insurgents in which Russia supports a faction of the insurgents in their take over of Syria.  In return Russia stays involved in Syria under the new post Assad regime.  Now which faction of the insurgents would that be?  Perhaps the same ones supported by Israel and the west.  Remember, Putin forced Syria to give up it's chemical weapons which was just want the zionist wanted Syria to do.  And Putin has never delivered those missiles, never fired upon one of those planes bombing Syria, never fired a shot, voted for the Libya no fly zone, consented to the Yemen sanctions and naval blockade, etc..

Right now it is only a guess as to what the true intent of Putin's actions are.

Stumpy4516's picture

Your assertions that russian paratroopers were on the ground and engaged is still ridiculous.  At this point Putin has a few military people in buildings at the airport and nothing more.  No russian has fired a shot in Syria.

Putin hosted the insurgents in Russia as his guests.  An agreement may have been reached (bye Assad) and now Putin may feel he can "take advantage".  Quite different from "having" the advantage.

The Iran deal was done in 2007.  Still there is nothing but a broken contract, there are no missiles delivered to Iran. Not to the very day.

It will be interesting to see if Putin is going to be fighting against the zionist, will he be cooperating with the zionist as he has in the past or is he angling to have his favored group of insurgents take the capital with his assistance (and a payback from the those insurgents in the form of future involvemet).

Assad needs to have an escape plan.  The insurgents do not want him or his attractive western wife to be alive to give interviews from Iran or some western country.  Nor does the US/Israel.  Putin may have agreed to their deaths.

Well it is a very good thing that the Saudis and Iranians have no influence.

The Jews as Masters of the Universe. They own or control everyone. Except for the people they don't control. In fact I suspect that the most rabid antiJew posters around here are controlled by the Zionazis. What better way to slip in disinformazion?

And of course some could be stating their honest opinion. Which is which? Only time and events will tell.

"This message came to me concerning Damascus: 'Look, Damascus will disappear! It will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted. Sheep will graze in the streets and lie down unafraid. There will be no one to chase them away. The fortified cities of Israel will also be destroyed, and the power of Damascus will end. The few left in Aram will share the fate of Israel's departed glory,' says the Lord Almighty" (Isaiah 17:1-3, NLT).

Kind of surprised it took Putin this long to respond by escalating. It has been clear for many moons the US is coordinating the overthrow of Assad.

Vlad has to wait a while, while even the cheerleaders start to realize that the Anglo-Zion world view is rotten to the core. A year and a half ago, Ukrainians queued to get in the military. Now they are hanging out in Russia waiting for this Knudelman-Kagan nightmare to end or actually helping the end arrive by switching sides to the NAF.

God bless the Russians.

God bless the Russians and Putin indeed.

The Russians had 80 years or so of Kagans, Nuland aka Nudelmans, Soros (aka Gyorgy Schwartz), Leon Trotsky aka Lev Davidovich Bronshtein and many other dual shit-i-ZZen types who murdered 25+ million Russian (and Ukrainain) Christians.

Yeah I'm sure you're right.

Putin loves Benji N. so much that he has a special Dacha waiting for him in Crimea when Tel Aviv and Haifa are a pile of ash sitting on a glass skating rink.

It's his special way of saying thanks to Langley and Mossad's for their contribution to the Donbass killing tens of thousands since Sochi in February 2014!!!

Its easy to look at the record and see what happened to the Zino-oligarchy after Vladomir Putin took over. Look into Boris Behrezovski or Russal. This 'Vlad is on the Zino-team' trope is a pathetic attempt to steer the low-information sheeple.
