Russian Military Forces Arrive In Syria, Set Forward Operating Base Near Damascus

Tyler Durden's picture

While military direct intervention by US, Turkish, and Gulf forces over Syrian soil escalates with every passing day, even as Islamic State forces capture increasingly more sovereign territory, in the central part of the country, the Nusra Front dominant in the northwestern region province of Idlib and the official "rebel" forces in close proximity to Damascus, the biggest question on everyone's lips has been one: would Putin abandon his protege, Syria's president Assad, to western "liberators" in the process ceding control over Syrian territory which for years had been a Russian national interest as it prevented the passage of regional pipelines from Qatar and Saudi Arabia into Europe, in the process eliminating Gazprom's - and Russia's - influence over the continent.

As recently as a month ago, the surprising answer appeared to be an unexpected "yes", as we described in detail in "The End Draws Near For Syria's Assad As Putin's Patience "Wears Thin." Which would make no sense: why would Putin abdicate a carefully cultivated relationship, one which served both sides (Russia exported weapons, provides military support, and in exchange got a right of first and only refusal on any traversing pipelines through Syria) for years, just to take a gamble on an unknown future when the only aggressor was a jihadist spinoff which had been created as byproduct of US intervention in the region with the specific intention of achieving precisely this outcome: overthrowing Assad (see "Secret Pentagon Report Reveals US "Created" ISIS As A "Tool" To Overthrow Syria's President Assad").

As it turns out, it may all have been just a ruse. Because as Ynet reports, not only has Putin not turned his back on Assad, or Syria, but the Russian reinforcements are well on their way. Reinforcements for what? Why to fight the evil Islamic jihadists from ISIS of course, the same artificially created group of bogeyman that the US, Turkey, and Saudis are all all fighting. In fact, this may be the first world war in which everyone is "fighting" an opponent that everyone knows is a proxy for something else.

According to Ynet, Russian fighter pilots are expected to begin arriving in Syria in the coming days, and will fly their Russian air force fighter jets and attack helicopters against ISIS and rebel-aligned targets within the failing state.

And just like the US and Turkish air forces are supposedly in the region to "eradicate the ISIS threat", there can't be any possible complaints that Russia has also decided to take its fight to the jihadists - even if it is doing so from the territory of what the real goal of US and Turkish intervention is - Syria. After all, it is a free for all against ISIS, right?

From Ynet:

According to Western diplomats, a Russian expeditionary force has already arrived in Syria and set up camp in an Assad-controlled airbase. The base is said to be in area surrounding Damascus, and will serve, for all intents and purposes, as a Russian forward operating base.

In the coming weeks thousands of Russian military personnel are set to touch down in Syria, including advisors, instructors, logistics personnel, technical personnel, members of the aerial protection division, and the pilots who will operate the aircraft.

The Israeli outlet needless adds that while the current makeup of the Russian expeditionary force is still unknown, "there is no doubt that Russian pilots flying combat missions in Syrian skies will definitely change the existing dynamics in the Middle East."

Why certainly: because in one move Putin, who until this moment had been curiously non-commital over Syria's various internal and exteranl wars, just made the one move the puts everyone else in check: with Russian forces in Damascus implicitly supporting and guarding Assad, the western plan instantly falls apart.

It gets better: if what Ynet reports is accurate, Iran's brief tenure as Obama's BFF in the middle east is about to expire:

Western diplomatic sources recently reported that a series of negotiations had been held between the Russians and the Iranians, mainly focusing on ISIS and the threat it poses to the Assad regime. The infamous Iranian Quds Force commander Major General Qasem Soleimani recently visited Moscow in the framework of these talks. As a result the Russians and the Iranians reached a strategic decision: Make any effort necessary to preserve Assad's seat of power, so that Syria may act as a barrier, and prevent the spread of ISIS and Islamist backed militias into the former Soviet Islamic republics.

See: the red herring that is ISIS can be used just as effectively for defensive purposes as for offensive ones. And since the US can't possibly admit the whole situation is one made up farce, it is quite possible that the world will witness its first regional war when everyone is fighting a dummy, proxy enemy which doesn't really exist, when in reality everyone is fighting everyone else!

That said, we look forward to Obama explaining the American people how the US is collaborating with the one mid-east entity that is supporting not only Syria, but now is explicitly backing Putin as well.

It gets better: Ynet adds that "Western diplomatic sources have emphasized that the Obama administration is fully aware of the Russian intent to intervene directly in Syria, but has yet to issue any reaction... The Iranians and the Russians- with the US well aware- have begun the struggle to reequip the Syrian army, which has been left in tatters by the civil war. They intend not only to train Assad's army, but to also equip it. During the entire duration of the civil war, the Russians have consistently sent a weapons supply ship to the Russian held port of Tartus in Syria on a weekly basis. The ships would bring missiles, replacement parts, and different types of ammunition for the Syrian army."

Finally, it appears not only the US military-industrial complex is set to profit from the upcoming war: Russian dockbuilders will also be rewarded:

Arab media outlets have recently published reports that Syria and Russia were looking for an additional port on the Syrian coast, which will serve the Russians in their mission to hasten the pace of the Syrian rearmament.

If all of the above is correct, the situation in the middle-east is set to escalate very rapidly over the next few months, and is likely set to return to the face-off last seen in the summer of 2013 when the US and Russian navies were within earshot of each other, just off the coast of Syria, and only a last minute bungled intervention by Kerry avoided the escalation into all out war. Let's hope Kerry has it in him to make the same mistake twice.

Also, support for the Druze, doesn't mean they are supporting ISIS/ISL and Oren didn't say anything but talking about the Druze.

Ya'alon said that Israel has given medical aid to over a thousand Syrian rebels. You make it sound like Israel was treating Druze casualties when they were not. Oren did not mention the Druze at all, he said: "the lesser evil is the Sunnis over the Shias."This corresponds with Israel's support for the Sunni rebels against Assad and his Shiite allies.

There is zero evidence that Israel is providing anything other than medical treatment to the wounded who show up at the border.  Again, it would be the height of wanton neglect if the Israeli gov't wasn't attempting to collect intelligence from whoever is fighting.  Turkey has been supporting ISIS until they weren't (Biggest open secret), and Turkey is hardly a friend to Israel.

At the beginning of the Syrian civil war there were dozens of groups, some were actually pro western, secular (relative), who were fighting against a brutal monstrous Assad regime.  The Obama regime wasn't interested in supporting those groups who were known and quantifiable circa 2011.  Once the Jihadist groups snuffed out those groups and began to get traction against Assad, the arrogant but clueless McCain crowd and whoever in the Obama Regime decided to get involved, years later, and thought they could "vet" these individuals within a much smaller universe of groups/fighters that were now overwhelmingly Jihadist in orientation.  As an aside, the Obama Regime recently admitted in Congressional hearings that after four years, the US policy of training Iraqis could only claim literal dozens successfully trained (Vetted is what they're actually saying).  It is an unbelievable FUBAR, yet Empires rarely heed reality and adjust accordingly.

While Syria serves as a Iranian conduit to Hezzbullah, ISIS/ISL/Sunni Jihadist isn't worth the risk to Israel's national security interest.  Remember Syria was a predominately Sunni society, ruled by the minority Alawites.  Assad's gov't can be held responsible should Israel desire to regarding Hezzbullah.  ISIS/ISL/Al Nusra/Al Queda controlling Syria isn't a positive for Israel in any respect.  Yes, I know ISIS and Hezzbullah aren't on friendly terms, but those internecine conflicts aren't adding to Israelis security interests any more than Hamas/PLO infighting save them from thousands of rockets/mortars.

Bottom line, there is no strategic positive for Israel should the Sunni Jihadists master the declared caliphate within Syria/Iraq.

Tell us why you have a better understanding of Israel's position than erstwhile Ambassador Oren who claims the exact opposite of your statement.

Israel's Former Ambassador: Militant Shias Are More Dangerous Than Sunnis

Michael Oren made the provocative claim that "the lesser evil is the Sunnis over the Shias," while insisting that the U.S. should never ally with Iran, even against Sunni terrorists.

Billy, this weighing of who in the Israel point of view is offering the most danger defines Israeli diplomatic/security policy since 1948.  Nassar versus Assad versus Saddam Hussein verus Arafat vesus the Saudis, on and on.  Iran has a powerful proxy in Lebanon (Who control Lebanon's gov't) which was formerly held hostage by the PLO and their 19 year civil war.  Israel will have to kill thousands of UN troops protecting Hezzbullah if it actually was to prosecute a war of annihilation against Hezzbullah.  It obviously can't do that.  Since the Persians have now been guaranteed a safe haven to become a nuclear power, what happens is beyond anyone's crystal ball.  The Shites (The Ayatollahs) believe in their Hidden Imam, the apocalyptic fulfillment of prophecy, that has been twisted as meaning destroying Israel and also in the attempt Iran, bringing forth their Kingdom of God on Earth.

Billy, the fact the Shites of the Iranian gov't is now considered Israel's most dangerous challenge doesn't mean that the Israelis are bargaining with Sunni Jihadists of Al Nusra or that it could in any rational analysis be in Israel's interests.  And that is my only real point this evening.  Assad and his gov'ts control of its very advanced chemical weapons program is far safer with Assad's gov't than ISIS (Sunni Jihadists).

Are you familiar with the declassified DIA report which says that the Syrian rebels are not moderates at all but are Al Qaeda/Al Nusra/ISIS? The report also states that ISIS has been funded by "the West, the Gulf States and Turkey" for the specific purpose of creating an Islamic State in Syria. This is just as irrational as Israel aiding radical Sunni forces battling Assad but both are true.  There's a game being played but it's not the game you think it is. The Israeli government is no more interested in the lives of individual Jewish people than the American government is interested in the lives of individual American citizens.

Oh I do indeed believe that the US Gov't Now is providing support to 'fighters' that are in fact Jihadists, but not for the reason that so many here believe, but that the US Gov'ts ability to even field Arabic linguists is pathetically small; not to mention fluent in Arabic with intelligence training and regional expertise.  The US Gov't is being punked out, rolled, and bitch slapped due to a Gov't that is so filled with hubris of Empire, that its bureaucracy within the intelligence community couldn't be honest about the ground situation anymore than the US State Department bureaucracy couldn't be honest about a Secretary of State openly committing felonies regarding protection of Special Compartmented Information (SCI) or the reasons why the Benghazi Consulate attack occurred.

Maybe youre right about gov'ts not caring about their people, American or Israeli.  Certainly, if I believe that Int'l Jewry control most of the Western World, they certainly in words and deeds Do Not defend Israel much, and more often than not are the Israelis biggest critics and provide a large measure of cover for Israel's most vociferous critics.

The US has been supporting militant Islamists since at least 1979. I clearly remember the pictures and stories about the god fearing mountain men with two hundred year old flintlocks battling the evil USSR in Afghanistan. I'd love to see a family tree that stretches from the mujaheddin to Osama bin Laden to Al Qaeda to ISIS with all the intelligence agency godfathers and godmothers noted in the margins.

I'm calling it a night with no hard feelings I hope.

When you see Gene (Chip) Tatum pop in via Skype, understand Tatum quit Pegasus when ordered to assassinate Ross Perot ..

You're a big boy. Look up Pegasus yourself ..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_E._Vallely

Vallely also co-authored a 1980 paper with then PSYOP analyst Michael Aquino entitled From PSYOP to MindWar: The Psychology of Victory.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_Set

The Temple of Set was consecrated in Santa Barbara, California during the summer solstice of June 1975, by Michael A. Aquino, in a "greater black magic" ritual that resulted in what Aquino regards as an inspired text titled The Book of Coming Forth by Night. Aquino later stated that the name of the text is an "evident negation" of the name of the Ancient Egyptian Book of Coming Forth by Day, also known as the Book of the Dead.[3] Aquino's working has been compared to Aleister Crowley's "Cairo Working" of 1904, which resulted in the Book of the Law, the central sacred text of Thelema.[4]

The Temple was founded by members of the Church of Satan,[5] who left that organization in 1975 because of administrative and philosophical disagreements with its founder Anton Szandor LaVey.[5] Michael Aquino had joined the Church of Satan in 1969 and risen rapidly in the Church's hierarchy.[4] Aquino has stated that he believed LaVey not to be merely a charismatic leader but to have been actually appointed by Satan himself (referring to this charismatic authority as the "Infernal Mandate") to found the Church.[6] After the split of 1975, Aquino believed LaVey had lost the mandate, which the "Prince of Darkness" then transferred to Aquino and a new organization, the Temple of Set.

And we do wonder why it must be called -- ISIS? Read Blavatsky ..

I see no reason for such strange behavior other than as a diversionary tactic on your part. You can't explain why bombing Assad's army and aiding Assad's enemies is not part of an effort to topple Assad. Nor can you explain why Ambassador Oren said that Israel prefers Sunni terrorists to Shiites and so you pretend that I have insulted your Jewish heritage when obviously I have not done so.

The port in Syria is vital for Russia. Mr Putin surely understands that.

Syria was slated to undergo what Libya and Iraq did, destabilization. This was the primary aim of the Jewish lobby and so the government of the USA, the slave of the Jewish lobby, went ahead and trained and armed ISIS to overthrow Assad. Who is an ophthalmologist. He and his lovely wife and children are WHITE people. They celebrate CHRISTMAS!

The lemmings may be fooled, if they even are watching or reading anything about it, which I doubt, but not informed observers who read media that are not owned by the 5th column in this nation of America.

Obama reveals compensation to Israel over Iran nuclear deal
August 22, 2015

US President Barack Obama has committed in writing to increase American military aid to Israel for the development of anti-missile systems, as well as to accelerate cooperation on the development of tunnel detection technologies.

“Our governments should identify ways to accelerate the ongoing collaborative research and development for tunnel detection and mapping technologies to provide Israel new capabilities to detect and destroy tunnels because they could be used to threaten Israeli civilians, ” Obama said in a letter dated August 19, published in full by the New York Times on Friday, to Jerrold Nadler, a Democrat in the House of Representatives who announced that he will vote to approve the accord.

In the letter, Obama promises to increase cooperation with Israel and with the United States’ allies in the Gulf in the fight against Iran’s efforts to destabilize the region by supporting the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, and Syrian President Bashar Assad.

“My administration is prepared to enhance the already intensive joint efforts underway to identify and counter the range of shared threats we face in the region, as well as increase missile defense funding so that Israel and the United States can accelerate the co-development of the Arrow-3 and David’s Sling missile defense systems,” he writes.

Volkadav - What I read of Ezekial 38 and current nations is Russia supports attack on Israel. From a pure secular perspective this is Russian consolidation of energy resources in the ME. A strategy similar to Sun Tzu Art of War rule #1 which is divide allies.

At one point despite our flaws, we had moral high ground compared to the Soviet Duma. No longer. We learned little from the Soviet corruption.

It was near guaranteed friend we had to arrive here in evolution. However, let me say a potential alliance of great intellect was squandered where we.could have finished the job of ending classic death together. The Chinese have merchant strengths of distribution but not creativity (which they no doubt can relearn). However they have less class and honor than the Russian people right now.

I just say this: Forgive us ALL Father for we know not what we do.

See you Russians on the other side for our final mutual push toward the end of our evolution. There is going to have to be a real period of forgiveness for what is coming. We are all going to weep for awhile all over earth.

This is a smart move by Putin. A win by ISIS in Syria would embolden the CIA/MIC to do exactly what Russia fears the most, expand ISIS into the soft underbelly of Russia. The US/EU fascists are hemming him in in Poland, Bulgaria, Ukraine, they never stop. How far do they think they can go with this?

There has been a lot of talk on the far-right-wing news boards about a 'winnable' nuclear war, and indeed a lot of the bullshit artists want you to believe that by using the 'Rods of God' every single Russian nuke would be blown out of it's silo before it could be fired. Predicted?

No, written to inspire self-fulfillment by future generations of kikes.

Remember who wrote the fairytale. Jews.

If you write the book, of course you're going to make yourself more important than others. Hence "chosen" people.

The remainder of the fairytale was written by ancient jew moneychangers as a roadmap for the future kikes to enslave the world with their usury upon the goy.

Nothing is foretold and nothing is coincidence.

There is much much more to what I say but it is up to you to research and.....

Connect the dots.

Omega - True, Jews don't read the new testament, they read the Torah which is old testament or first five books of the bible written by Moses. However Christ stated the kingdom of the world belongs to all men. There are no real good guys and bad guys. Best to read the Bible in its entirety as a continuum. Then compare to modern physics. Then apply to geopolitics. The Jewish prophets point to Christ they just expected a physical ruler to save them, not an alien.

I didn't want to believe some things are true. As a statician I said no no no! I don't want to believe people could tune in to an alien frequency or Christ transformed into a being of light in front of his.apostles. How could Daniel predict 2,000 years of the Jews being trampled on by nations and reformed in 1948 as a nation?

The fallacy of organized religions is and used by governments is that we all have to pay (lots of taxes to build palaces and get classy blowjobs). The prophets and Christ stated classic death ends and we enter a new paradigm. Guess what? WE ARE doing it as we speak with science. Yesterday's metaphysics is todays quantum physics.

That old rascal Putin decided that biding his time about moves in Syria is over and is committing to fight "ISIS".

This will stymie Washington's plans in a number of ways, the foremost being that US led air attacks against "ISIS" better not be on Syrian territory for fear of 'friendly fire' incidents on Russian troops.

Putin and Assad might initiate a no fly zone in Syrian airspace that the US would have no right, legally or morally defensible, to cross.

This is a staring match that Obama doesn't have the stomach for and an outright confrontation with Russia will send him scurrying to Kerry to make a deal with Lavrov.

Game set and match.

It's strange and pathetic, the way most commenters here copycat the flippant style of ZH.  Instead of saying something of value, the conversation degrades into silly jokes:  Everyone's trying to win the flippancy triple crown.

This is a striking example of conformity in action: And believe you me, dear commenters, that is what most of you are, conformists.

In the case of this article, such flippancy (starting with ZH itself), is uncalled for.  If true, this Russian intervention is one of the most momentous points of the 21st century, full of risks and forebodings.  Russia is not Iraq, nor is it Libya, nor Iran, nor even the UK and France.  It's a country dead set on charting its own course, and not caving in to the Rothschilds and Rockefellers (that is, to our REAL government).  These bankers are not used to such Huzpah, nor used to defiance, so they will escalate.  The Russians will not back off this time, and then what?

It's beyond me: How can anyone joke about the possibility of WW3?  Will that war involve the death of one billion children, or would it only entail the incineration of a mere 500,000,000?

Mon, 08/31/2015 - 23:18 | 6493612 johmack2

the flippancy of ZH comments exists because they lack the ability to add anything of intellectual value to the conversations. So they typically spout off comments that make little to no sense or have nothing to do with the actual article. The question i want to know is will OIL go up or further crash...

Rockefeller, it sounds like you are a scared little pussy who has no knowledge of history.

All wars between east and west since WWII have been PROXY WARS.  Both sides are nuclear armed and know they would be committing suicide by starting anything directly against each other.  So they battle thru small allies and each side arms terrorists.  It's a chess game, dangerous only to those in the actual field of battle.

This has been going on for 60+ years now.  All the tough talk is mostly for public consumption.  It's a shame you've been asleep thru all of that.  Or perhaps you are 12 years old.

The entire world would be better off without people of this ilk. Let the sand niggers take out the communist army called NATO, the CFR the Tri-lateral commission etc etc ad nauseam.
The world would be a better place without self-appointed secret dictators that rule deceptively with only their best interests and self-enrichment in mind.

Go back to Sept 2013.  Obola's handlers and puppetmasters like Soros aka Gryorgy Schwartz wanted to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles into Syria.

Putin lined up 6 Russian ships off the coast of Syria and said no.  The whole mediterean became very crowded.  China had a cruiser there too.  The USA had at least 4 destroyers or missile frigates.  There were MANY subs there too.

The word was someone launched 2 missiles and they were shot down.  Some said it was an Israel sub or something closer to Cyprus then the USA shot those down.  Others said the US Navy launched them and Russian shot them down.

The next (Saturday) morning, General McHenry the head of the Joint Cheifs was at The White House.   And any ideas of Tomahawks into Syria quickly ended.

Does the US military brass have a backchannel to the Russians who said - this will be a big mistake?

The end result was Putin did NOT back down.

What might be the biggest fear of the Pentagram and their bosses at the defense contractors?

An exhibition on just how bad the USA overpriced weapons systems are.  A lot of contracts would be quickly cancelled.  People dead?  No biggie.  Defense contracts cancelled by "allied" countries would create panic.

I see your point and it's a good one at that; however, people deal with staring complete annihilation in the face in different ways.  Since we talk about dark issues all of the time eventually the humor grows dark, if this didn't happen there would be no humor to be had at all.  I think most people here have fought to keep this from happening in one way or another for most of their lives and yet, here we are.

David - Many here not thinking logistics. lets say the actual nuclear war and it lasts a matter of 2 days. what comes next is the total breakdown of the supply chain. Lets say I live up north near the mountains in a community of 28 homes.

statistically five of them are going to be armed versus one of me. after two weeks their food supplies are now gone. to provide for them all to make it through the winter and on to planting season I would need roughly 400 pounds of beans200 pounds of meat and fat content such as Crisco butter. then you actually have to make it through the spring season before planting and summer hunting and living off the land competing against thousands of other people in the woods armed and ready to kill you because they had no such preps. Bugs and leaves will be on the menu.

I am just getting warmed up I am NOT even discussing medication shortage fuel shortage lack of pure water in a short distance to the community etc.

Then you have  inside leadership thinking that they will just live with in the bunkers for 2 years come out of them with a stock pile of gold and expect that everybody will be forgiving understanding and ready for them to be ruled once again. NUTS.

The entrant closest to the actual number will get an all expense paid trip to Israel to see what a society built upon murder, genocide, and crimes against humanity looks like close up. The winner will even get to visit Zion's Gaza concentration camp.

Good luck.

Zion is a scheme, not an ethnicity.

I sure was amazed how the Egyptian gov't forceably removed thousands of Gazans to create a "security" zone adjacent to the border post Hamas-Israel war of 2014.  Hardly got mentioned in the world media complex.

lol right. Had nothing to do with Egyptian security. It was to curb smuggling into Gaza. And why would Egypt give zero fucks about that?  It was an Israeli directive. Israel/Egyptian gov are joined at the hip policy-wise in case you hadn't noticed.

Hey, this might be fun. Vietnam in the desert.

Superpower props up corrupt, failing regime with no popular support while ideologically rabid guerrilla army backed by another superpower hammers on the gates of the capital.

And we got dibs on Charlie.

Russia better get busy building some aircraft carriers. They'll need some place to park all those helicopters fleeing the Embassy.

For those who watch the Book of Revelation, the King of the North is now on the field of play.

A poor example there, the Vietamese and their superpower backers did not need aircraft carriers to send the US scurrying back home.

I can see you know nothing about how the Vietnam War ended or else you would understand the reference better.

Didn't the Vietnam war end with the americans losing?

Helicopters on the embassy roof and all that sort of ending?

Exactly. As the NVA drew near Saigon, the American embassy and anybody else who could get their hands on a Huey flew helicopters filled with refugees out to American carriers off the coast.

The sailors then pushed those helicopters overboard to make room for the next load of helicopter-borne refugees. And then repeated the exercise again and again until  no more Hueys came and the ships headed for home crammed with refugees and flight decks jammed full of the last batch of aircraft that made the trip.

Thus the need for Russia to hurry up and build some carriers so they'll have a place for their helicopter-borne evacuation of their embassy to go to.

This is exactly my point. Vietnam all over again. Only the superpowers have changed seats. It is now Russia's turn to try and prop up a loser regime that is destined to collapse regardless.

The Americans watched the French get wiped out in the First Vietnam War, then told them to step aside and watch how the big boys did it.

Now, after a decade and a half of watching American quagmire in the Middle East, Russia suddenly thinks it's going to swoop in and show us how it's done.

And they call these guys brilliant chessplayers. Ha! But I don't blame the Russian people any more than I blame the American people or the Syrian people or even the ordinary folks stuck behind ISIS lines. Satan has his claws into the leaders of every nation and they are doing his work even if they do not think they are. Let's get this over with so a new day can dawn.

Go Charlie. Go Charlie.

If Russia knows it is doing Satan's work then is Russia really doing Satan's work?

Satan doesn't have the control that some think. Humans are getting wise.

Satan doesn't have the control that some think...

But he is the most powerful created being in the world.  One important fact to remember though is he didn't make the rules, he just has to abide by them.  It may look like havoc, but the limit of death has been placed on him as well.

There is One that owns both the white and black pieces on the board.  As mentioned above, I'd consider this latest report as Black Knight forks Whitish Queen and Rook.

And the super carriers may be outdated like the battleships in WWII. I believe in a WWIII situation the carrier will be pretty much useless. Military's are always fighting the last war.

Russians are not nearly as dumb as Americans. They will not blindly vault into a conflict here. They will attempt to apply surgical strikes to the key ISIS positions that the Americans won't bomb. They can accomplish this with relatively few troops. Meanwhile the U.S. has thousands of troops tied down in the region. Checkers vs Chess.

Ah, the old checkers versus chess canard.

Russia is moving its own troops into Syria for the same reason that the US deployed to SVN-- dire  necessity.

Without Russian troops in country (do make note of that phrase), Putin and his advisors have recognized that the jig is up for Assad. So the alternatives are to flush sixty years of investment down the drain or to deploy Russian troops to prop up the flailing, failing regime whose days are otherwise numbered.

The only chess reference I can think of to describe this scenario is one where the player only has one move available to him and therefore he makes it rather than simply resign the game. It is not some brilliant plan but rather the lash of cruel reality that drives this stupid proposal forward.

Russia is about to tangle with a ruthless and high morale force fully equipped with the best stuff (i.e. American) there is. Every "friend" that Russia has in Syria will play both sides of the street just like Vietnam. Simple matter of making sure that you are on the winning side, no matter who winds up with the olive wreath.

In ingenuity, in brutality, Russia can scarcely hope to equal their opponent, who also enjoys the luxury of knowing the theater of operations and having countless spies and fellow travellers in the creaking Assad regime. Veteran troops versus rookie draftees unfamiliar with the region.

When I read this article, one phrase crosses my mind: Tan Son Nhut. Going to be some major embarrassments coming Ivan's way, you watch.

Go Charlie. Go Charlie.
