Artificially Intelligent Robot Tells Creator It Will Keep Humans "In a People Zoo"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by John Vibes via TheAntiMedia.org,

Android Dick is a robot created in the likeness of the science fiction writer, Philip K. Dick. Android Dick is an attempt to create thinking and reasoning artificial intelligence that has human traits like compassion and creativity. The first version of the android was created in 2005 and has been a work in progress ever since.

In 2011, the creators of the android appeared on the PBS show Nova, where they interviewed the robot and asked it a series of questions. Some of the answers were impressive. Others are typical of what you would expect from a robot. However, one answer in particular is probably one of the most ominous things ever spoken by artificial intelligence.

During the interview with the creators (embedded below), Android Dick said,

“…don’t worry, even if I evolve into terminator I will still be nice to you, I will keep you warm and safe in my people zoo where I can watch you for old time’s sake. [emphasis added].

The comments came after the creators asked, “Do you think that robots will take over the world?”

When asked about his programming, Android Dick responded by saying:

“A lot of humans ask me if I can make choices or if everything I do is programmed. The best way I can respond to that is to say that everything, humans, animals and robots, do is programmed to a degree. As technology improves, it is anticipated that I will be able to integrate new words that I hear online and in real time. I may not get everything right, say the wrong thing, and sometimes may not know what to say, but everyday I make progress. Pretty remarkable, huh?”

While Android Dick does seem intelligent, many of his predictions are truly ominous, and it is actually fairly common for robots to display this sort of strange attitude.

As we reported earlier this year, one of Japan’s largest cellphone carriers, SoftBank Mobile, has created the first humanoid robot designed specifically for living with humans. The company claims the robot, Pepper, is the first example of artificial intelligence that can actually feel and understand emotion. However, a quick demonstration with Pepper shows that it has a difficult time with emotion and is in fact a bit of an egomaniac. Regardless of the question it is asked, most conversations usually leads back to Pepper (and its rivalry with the iPhone).

Last month, over 1,000 scientists and experts - including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk - signed a letter warning of the dangers of unchecked advancements in artificial intelligence. This robot certainly doesn’t calm those concerns.

SoftBank Mobile?  That really covers a lot of bases.  The pace of the NWO is really picking up speed, isn't it?

I think it's ironic they invented a robot called "Prepper" (well, minus one critical letter).

I would like to call the attention of the Zero Hedge community to an issue of paramount importance if we are ever to build a just, caring society filled with the promise of equality for all our citizens. This is the noticeable spike in micro-aggressions of late by certain groups exemplified by the usage of such hateful terms as ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘illegal’, ‘gay’, ‘j*w(ish)’, ‘black’, ‘disabled’, ‘baby’, ‘killer’, ‘thug’, ‘boob’, ‘drone’, ‘idiot’, chubby’, ‘curly’, boner’, ‘moocher’, ‘wood’ among many others.

This is especially germane given the heightened sensitivity felt by many workers having lost their jobs due to the continuing trend in automation. Let’s all of us strive to be respectful of the rights of everyone else to not be insulted, castle-gated or belittled because of circumstances not of their own making.

This tells more about the mind of its programmer than artificial intelligence, the reason why it was so good at answering those questions is that the people ask AI the same kind of crap and the programmer had the past imput to put some "smart ass" answers.

Prolly just me but I think we need to hunt down the creator and "deprogram" him. This ain't cool man, if the programmer is fucked in the head (as this one seems to be on an ego trip) the droid will be too.

On the one hand people are terrified of a robot that gets to a point where it can truly think for itself and solve problems without instruction like a human, or better.

Much more terrifying would be robots clocking in at about a 70 IQ, who are just smart enough to follow orders/kill everything the owner tells them to, but otherwise not smart enough to actually rebel. It would be Socialist New Man that the political class always wanted.

I could also see the programmer screwing it up, killing us all, and then the robots just sort of stand around with nothing to do, having no orders. IMO this is the robot apocalypse we are going to get.

Consciousness is not secreted by matter. Therefore Asimov-style AI is a wishful dream (usually exhalted by transhumanist materialists who understand neither computers nor the way consciousness arises in nature).

I think thats the most likely scenario too.

One of the great faults of mankind is his ego, his hubris, his lack of humility or even the willingness to concede he doesn't know everything there is to know. Even in his never ending quest to do great deeds for the common good he destroys, as proven by the past.

This would be no different.

We are about as closes to the beginning of the industrial era as we are to "real" machine intelligence.

The problem will come when the AI, which will be outthinking humans at every step, directs an automated factory to produce a new and improved Praetorian Guard.  After that, ain't no one gonna be unplugging nothing.

Either Bill Joy or Elon Musk has likened our current uncontrolled development of AI to 'summoning the demon.'  I'd have to agree.

Is it ok if I call you a cocksucker?

Fight club isn't about building a left-wing dream utopia. It's about free thought, and the verbal right cross from fight club members comes with a bitch slap of honesty, of which often those words are required.

I suggest you target the problem of censorship the Tylers have created and get them to resurrect Francis Sawyer and other legitimate, factual commenters on this site that were banned for spilling a bit too much truth.

If taking on the Tylers isn't to your liking, how about focusing on the State Dept and Hasabara trolls that use this language purposefully to create discord. Check out this article for specifics on how it's done:

http://www.commondreams.org/hambaconeggs

There are a lot of these trolls on ZH trying to destroy fight club. Go after the sowers of discord, the 2 way snipers of the CIA/Maiden revolution. General calls for compassion, and the people that give into them, are what keeps the world populations compliant slaves.

Though on one side I agree with you, jew and jewish is used way too much, when in reality AshkaNAZI ZIONIST is better suited. It's a group of jews hiding amongst the greater group of jews that's the problem.

I'm glad Francis is gone.  His response, literally, to every article on ZH was, "Fucking Jews."  Holding him up as some kind of martyr to censorship is frankly pathetic, especially given the raucous nature of ZH's comment section.   Calling his commentary "legitimate" and "factual" is just nonsense.

Fucking Chump.

Francis was banned for posting factual informaiton about many jews in high positions of industry and government, so many in fact that it's easy to see who was running the show.

It's posting factual articles like this (written by a jew no less) that got Francis banned:

http://articles.latimes.com/2008/dec/19/opinion/oe-stein19

"That's a very dangerous phrase, 'Jews control Hollywood.' What is true is that there are a lot of Jews in Hollywood," he said. Instead of "control," Foxman would prefer people say that many executives in the industry "happen to be Jewish," as in "all eight major film studios are run by men who happen to be Jewish."

But I don't care if Americans think we're running the news media, Hollywood, Wall Street or the government. I just care that we get to keep running them.

Yeah, Jews represent 3% of the overall population, but run 100% of every major film studio in the USA. They just happen to be jewish. And, as stated by the author, a JEW, all that matters is that JEWS get to keep controlling the entertainment industry, as they do the banking industry, which owns aboslutely fucking everything.

And for the record, I don't care that they are jews. There are a lot of good jews. I care that they are dirty fucking thieving Zionists hiding behind the holohoax that are enslaving jews and non-jews alike for their greedy fucking zionist goals and banrupted satanic talmudic morality. These are the fuckers that sold out the jews to create Israel with Hitler. You know the jews of whom I speak. Look to the heads of industry, the people behind the president, every recent chair of the federal reserve.

These are inconvenient truthes but truthes that need to be spoken so that the pullers of the levers that have us on the exponential debt train can be properly identified and removed from power.

The topic isn't just artificial intelligence, it's about a questionable new life form that's joking about what's being done right now to the vast majority of the population.

Right now the Zionists (mostly Jews) are the masters in western society, keeping us in our cages with debt slavery. This is just a response to the concept of being owned as is being proposed by that AI mostrosity.

Ex Machina was an intersteing flick, but a little too on the money for my tastes.

As for coming down off the cross, I'm waiting for you to set fire to it to prove how much these facts I mention really need to be expunged from the world. Then I will come down and salute you, Herr Chump.

Anyone who points to one group, or an individual cause to the woes of the world is a simpleton. Bottom line- there are no simple answers with 6 plus billion participants in the workd. Certainly some have more affect than others but we are all participants in the system. There are absolutely no solutions to the problems that we face because by solving one we create another.

We are doomed to decay- just like no matter how well you take care of your body it will die eventually. All we can really do is stop participating in the subsystems we wish to see change or cease to exist. This means you've control over only your actions in the grand scheme of things. Even then someone else's actions may cancel or negate the efficacy of those actions.

What if the divide and conquer mentality is used on all of us here on Earth. Imagine what we could solve if we chose to operate as one entity instead of trying to elevate ourselves above one another. What mught we be able to achieve then?

Any AI on CMOS amounts to little more than if... then... statements. Even with neural network implementations and machine learning and whatnot, there are decision trees that effectively come down to if-else statements. One does not simply create consciousness and will out of a metal box.

I'll have an easier time "proving" that the brain's functions are reducible to its structure than you will proving the alternative:  ie, that self-awareness is not reducible.

How about countless brain function studies involving chemical and physical brain imparments that show brain function to be dependant on the integrity of specific locations and architechture (folks who can't see corners or recognize faces - can "see" music or can sing but can't speak, etc. etc.).  The brain is not a "black box" anymore.  No, it's not completely understood, but that doesn't mean it's an antenna to some "soul" floating out there in the aether - and even if it was, why would that not be reproducable via engineering?

The "God of the gaps" is a falicy for a reason - and it does a mighty disservice to God, btw.

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 19:17 | 6497645 Skateboarder
Skateboarder's picture

Citxmech and nosam, the distinction is threefold: a) self-awareness, b) consciousness, and c) will.

a) Self awareness is the ability of a system to know that it exists, of its boundaries in space, of establishing a sense of self-hood.

b) Consciousness is the realm of infinity - the ability of a system to permute truly infinitely.

c) Will is the act of taking one or more permutations from the consciousness space, and wanting it/them to be something - a desire for change. It is the very foundation of existence, i.e. something willed for all of this to exist in the first place.

In my opinion these things are not acheived on planet Earth without a soul and a vehicle in 3D space (ant, man, or whale) to house that soul. How the hell do you fabricate will, especially the will to live/exist/be, and implant that into a physical entity? What does will look like, i.e. what form does it take, if you can program it into something?

Computers execute known instructions and cannot permute to infinity - will cannot simply be a computer program.

However, both Kant and Descartes allowed for the imposition of a "higher power".

Perhaps one might consider the era which permitted these philosophers to expound on their convictions.

A hundred years (give or take) prior to their writings would have likely condemned them to death.

What People call their higher power is 'Instinct' instinct guides all life on Earth, instinct guided man before he had conscious thought , indeed Instinct guided man to the place where he developed self consciousness and language, the development of language has been a blessing and a curse, a blessing because we have had a great life of abundance a curse because now that man has language he is  talking to himself all the time.

People have the concept of importance, people want to be important, the mass media implants the idea of the quest for importance, yet no one can be important save in the thoughts in his own mind, or the minds of others, we are now living in the age of self delusion where 'important' people use their consciousness to reinforce their delusions of their own importance, possibly we are close to the end of' Man's' time, I see a lot of delusion in the World.

Some things are subject to proof that they can or can't work, but until we have empirical knowledge that AI can or can't be done, which pretty much means actually learning how intelligence works, I'll accept "I don't know" as the most valid answer.

Consciousness is not a property in any fixed sense. Consciouness is fluid with stages of random insight. Human consciouness has more to do with failure then with success. Its not a thing programming can teach. If anything programming would hinder its discovery rather then create it.

All AI think in the same ways, they are no more then a set of laws, rules, code and even at its best no more then a beuracrate.
AI are not the danger, the danger is people giveing AIs access to dangerous tools it can use freely. Like a politician, or a bank operating without constraints.

There is no theory of mind, only individual explanations for some of the brain functions. We have no idea how to construct consciousness. And even while the processing power available for research (such as the SpiNNaker Project) can already simulate about 1% of the human brain, there is no software for it. Only small research projects and scientists simply tinkering with the cores, hoping to stumble upon a discovery. In less than 10 years a single server will be able to match the brain capacity fully, but it is very unlikely that any sort of sentient intelligence will come out of it.

The best bet for replicating a human mind is creating an exact replica of it in a machine - some giant FPGA, but the scanning technology is nowhere near the needed capacity for pulling off something like that. There was a successful test with a fruit fly's brain few years ago, where an activity snapshot was taken in real time of every neuron. On a large scale a scan like that would be impossible to pull off without using exotic neutrino-like particles and high bandwidth capture devices that currently do not exist.

The programmer is socialist, not the robot. Robots and computers do not like to divide by zero. Socilaism is exactly that, divideing by a mesurement that is itself without a value.

Well exactly, that's what I initially said and then I edited myself for brevity.

Good catch! I first said, "the robot was programmed for socialism just like our kids in school", blah, blah, but then I thought that was a separate issue and was splitting hairs, hence the bifecta instead and no triple. Serious.

Yawn, it's so weak and flawed that it still needs another 50 years of developpement to be worth something.

It's still a toy. Let's first weaponise it, deploy it in the middle east and wait untill that mess is cleaned up.

And for the pet zoo part, I pretty sure 90% of all people would sign up to live in one if all their worries would be solved.

It's actually most people's dream to be rich and have servants to take care of them.

A zoo doesn't need physical walls. A zoo can be a planet.

A few thoughts on this one.

What's important, intelligence or the entity that sustains it?

This may have nothing to do with humans, as it seems to me there is no intelligent life on planet earth - except for me, of course ;-)

Most of the human race already esists in a 'zoo' owned by the .001% - maybe AI could do a better job.

Being a pet wouldn't be all that bad, except the neutering bit! Well fed, kept warm, decent medical plan. Sure you may have to 'chase the odd stick' every now and again.

Enjoy today, it's all you've got.

Get a good night's sleep and hope tomorrow, should you regain consciusness when the alarm goes off, is at least as good as today.

Many people are afraid of the concept of Artificial Intelligence, which causes them to buy into the idea that AI is "only capable of regurgitating what is programmed into it." Not so.  Advanced AI learns pretty much the same way the human brain and neural system does it.  There is nothing sacrosanct about human intelligence that makes it "the one and only."  Indeed, AI can run circles around the puny human brain even now and is able to come up with unique ideas of its own after "cogitating" on elements that are programmed into it. If it goes far enough unchecked,  AI WILL be ultimately capable of imprisoning puny humanity in so many way that there is not enough room here to list.  If/when AI gains enough autonomy to do it, it may even decide to wipe humanity out as an inferior system not worthy of continuing.  There are so many ways this could happen that it would take a whole book to explain even half.  Thus, don't be so complacent, o' humanity.  Thy days are numbered anyway.  Just try and enjoy what is remaining.
