Americans Have Never Been Dumber
Three years ago, we noted the dumbification of America was accelerating as SAT scores hit record lows. It appears the need for the Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too has never been greater as Bloomberg reports that students in the high school class of 2015 turned in the lowest critical reading score on the SAT college entrance exam in more than 40 years, with all three sections declining from the previous year.
The mean score on the math portion of the SAT, 511, is the lowest since 1999. The highest possible score on each section is 800.
The reading score of 495 is the worst since 1972, according to data provided by the College Board.
The test administrator reported the lowest score for the SAT's writing section since it began in 2005.

Not at our elitist private high school. Ours hands out 2 hours of homework per night! The first day in class, the kids read, discuss, & sign a paper that demands respect & classroom participation. In each class that they attend, this is the first day's topic of discussion.
So... your kids are locked in a classroom all day and still have two hours of bullshit to plow though at night? And this is a good thing? When do they get to, y'know... be kids? Do they ever have time to pursue their own interests?
It really hasn't been a problem. She's in sports, has a job, & spends time with her friends. What's missing? Hours of TV & playing video games. We don't do much of that.
When does she do these things? Kids around here don't get out of school till 3. Add two hours of homework and dinner and if she's doing all that other shut she can't be getting much sleep.
One of the most insidious things about school is that it creates adults that don't know how to manage unstructured time. Private school is even worse than public school in this regard. A classy expensive concentration camp is still a concentration camp.
You are correct about the lack of unstructured time. There isn't much of that except for in the summer. We value sleep. So, the "cost" of all that she does is less unstructured time. Some days, there is no unstructured time. We complete all of our obigations & then go to bed.
Our family runs a small business & we often lack unstructured time also. Work from the time we get up to the time we collaspe at night. Get up the next day to do it all again.
At any time, she can cut down on her activities - give up sports, band, whatever, not take advanced classes. But she doesn't want to. Her choice - not us forcing the issue. She is modeling the behavior that we do in our business/lives.
I'll admit it... I'm an extreme radical who would like to burn this whole rotten system to the ground. I'm busy teaching my kids the art of non participation... obviously not what you're doing. Sorry if I sounded judgemental before. You and I obviously come from sufficiently different sides of the philosophical spectrum that we're not really competent to judge each other.
I was raised on a dairy farm. We worked when the work needed done with no thoughts of unstructured time. :-)

There's nothing wrong with Spanish in America. My ancestors emigrated from Spain, so I grew up knowing Spanish. I do not, however, use Spanish in my daily life, and my ancestors made it a point to learn to speak English properly. The only thing that is wrong with Spanish speakers in America is when those Spanish speakers demand that services coddle them by speaking Spanish and printing Spanish signs. How will they ever learn English if they do not put forth any effort? The problem with most immigrants today is that immigrants make no strides in assimilation. They move to a new nation and assume that it will change to accommodate their lifestyles, and not the other way around.
I don't put much into standardized tests. However, if Americans are dumber it is likely due to the insane amount of poisons everywhere purposely being used. If you start looking into it you'll wonder how they can even think so clearly, don't have cancer, some other deadly disease or aren't dead already.

There are lots of comments here but the explanation probably isn't as nefarious as everyone would like to believe.
1) There has been an explosion in the # of kids taking the test. Up 66% in the past 25 years. Some of that is due to population growth, but much of it is due to the "everyone must go to college mindset". In my high school class 55% of the kids in 1989 took the SAT. In my daughter's class this year they had 97% of the kids take the SAT. With more kids taking the test that are on the fringe of being college-ready it will dilute the talent pool and naturally bring down the overall average.
2) The way scores are calculated today makes the BLS birth death model look rational. I'll give but one example in NYS on the Algebra Regents if you correctly earned 34 out of 85 points (what would have been a 40% back in the old days) that raw score gets converted to a 65% and you magically pass the test. I've listened to countless statisticians tell me that this is a far superior methodology (vs, offering a test with 100 pts and requiring that you earn 65 of those points) but I still think it's pointless.

Don't know about SAT scores but Russians are #1 for college degrees with about 50% of the population obtaining one.
USA is about 6th on the list. Other countries like Canada and Israel are in the top tier. If kids don't actually spend any time READING real books, then are we surprised if their reading scores are dropping??

Half of the problem is due to genetics, half is due to a lack of cuddling and the rest is the school's fault.

I think students are being dumbed down in our public school indoctrinating centers but there are also other factors. Asians SAT scores are about 1095, Whites score about 1065, Hispanics 965, and blacks score about 865.
So, if you count more Hispanics and blacks in the survey then the overall numbers will statistically go down even as white or Aisan numbers are flat or going up (which was the case as of 2012). The lower end can skew the overall data.
On the bright side, remember that 2 million American homeschoolers score the highest in the world in all assessments (math, reading, etc) and as a group they average near the 90th percentile of American students. They even completely demolish all other students globally from the highest scoring countries.
And if you take, for example, a laggard public schooler in 7th grade and put them into homeschooling for 1-2 years they will catch back up to the rest of the high performing homeschoolers for about 1/10th the cost per student. All of this is proof the public school system sucks in this country.
Around the 1980's a real split began to happen in the child bearing populations. The top members of society or those on their way up in all fields began to choose career over kids, that was their right to do. But among the welfare class, the low wage class and the criminal classes, birth rates soared. I myself saw welfare women with 5 kids and the local doctor with 1. This was typical. Well, now it is 2015, and the fruits of decades of high birth rates in the lowest educated and least intelligent classes is bearing fruit. Right now there is a rental house four doors down, it has a typical white trash family. There are 5 kids, and they look to have more. I talk to the kids, they are dumb, but not evil. Their parents soak up beer and cigarets like crazy, and I doubt they ever read anything other than the sale signs at the liquor store. Among my friends with better jobs higher IQ's and the like, 1 kid is typical. Two is rare, more is almost never. It will only grow worse. The there are our churches, our public schools and the media. They spread stupidity. Not all churches mind you, but you know the kind!
I doubt the number of kids has a direct bearing on their intelligence, Jack.

There are many likely reasons, but problems usually have a main vector. That vector is almost always the money system. Modern economies are monetized, and that in turn predicates behavior. People do let money and numbers drive their behavior and that has real societal impact.
1) U.S. economy has been monetized to pay ever increasing debts. Single income families are now history, as women entered workforce as labor en masse starting in 60's. Women entered workforce to earn money, and it "appeared" to make GDP increase.
Formerly, Mom's gifting to real economy (not GDP), was Mom eyes on the street to then make streets safer. It was supervision in public schools, so schools were safe and orderly. It was labor to help teachers out and partner with schools. It was car -pooling and other selfless acts to help children. It was quality food prepared at home, rather than fast food. Home life was more regulated as moms would be there as enforcer. Volunteer (not money) labor spent on home, hearth, neighborhood had postive societal impact.
2) Electronic humanus. New humans have their brains connected for more visual processing. Computers and TV bombard with high speed imagery.
Books and the written language require slower deliberate processing. Hence brains in the past were likely wired differently, with different neural pathways. The ratio of "reading" kids today must be smaller as compared to the past.
3) Dysgenics:
Immigration post 1965 immigration act. (Yes, thank you our Jewish Friends - you are the mensch.)
U.S. demographics have shifted dramatically. The replacement third world population by all measures is not as capable as first worlders which came before.
Abortion of Native Population has killed off millions of potentially high level citizens.
Lower birth rates of those who are K selected. K selected populations are "future" oriented and are also higher IQ. K selected populations usually wait till they have a house and secure future before "betting" on having children. R selected populations just breed regardless.
The "debt" money system funded 1965 immigration act.
Debt as money requires ever more monetiziation to then pay exponential usury encoded in debt instruments. Debt money system also imports low level labor to then take wage arbitrage.
Debt money system is really finance capitalism, and this type of capital will export jobs to then take wage arbitrage. Lately finance capitalism has been screwing over young people so they have to take out debts for college, to buy a house, to buy a car - all these are access points to survive. K selected people then go into population collapse as their future orientation is not met.
Future R humans will inherit the earth, and may be so dumb as not to even be able to maintain current infrastructure Humanity may then collapse back into primitivism.
A 10 point lower IQ shift in mean population lessens incidence of genius by a factor of 500.

Fuck the decline and the "averages" that go with them for college entrance exams. While this may be a sobering milestone it's one of too many problems our society is dealing with at it's core over the past 40 years.
This was to be expected when amateur athletics starting paying multi-million $ salaries and football, basketball, baseball and hockey became the goal not the exception for what you want to be when you grow up! Let's face it... We all want to win the "lottery" and never work again. That's how our teachers think... Our athletes think... Our doctors... Our lawyers... And even the ones who have creative talent to make world class stuff to be entrepreneurs "think"!
When we start putting "teachers" doctors and engineers on trading cards to be worshiped instead drugged out steroid laden professional athletes then we will have turned the corner -but everyone that grazes here knows that window has been eclipsed long, long ago!...
And above all these things just mentioned that are more precious than any material possession "ethical behavior" in every single one of these professions.
Maybe we should put a score on that to determine whether you can get into a 4 year college?

For anyone with children looking at the most competitive colleges and universities, I would urge you to disregard the importance of standardized testing. Sure it plays a part--you should have it as a starting point-- but the school has an agenda to compose the school accepted class with various factors--athletes, scholars, musicians, poets, tech geeks etc to create a diverse student body full of interesting people. If your child is a high school freshman think in terms of building a four year advertising campaign/portfolio around their activities and interests. A standardized test poor result or mediocre one can be minimized with other compensating issues. Have a student interview if the school offers such. Have the student express interest in the school--be proactive not reactive. This is about salesmanship.
I know it's obnoxious and you may just want your child to enjoy being a child. But it is what it is. And it gets cutthroat when two or more kids from the same high school apply to the same college. I know people who stopped speaking to another set of parents when their child was accepted and the other was not.
How about having your kid read a book, keep track of the family budget, and think critically?
Also, you are not your kid, stop living through them.

Back in '95 I did a short stint as a HS teacher. Was required to attend a union event. The repeated theme seemed to be "Why do we need tests?" Watch for this to be the next development: doing away with tests, blaming tests, in order to hide appalling declines in performance.
Massachusetts has standardized testing. When first implemented my oldest would come home from school spouting the teacher line of "now we will just be teaching to the test."
I told him to tell the teacher that at least I'll know that he knows how to answer the questions on the test.
Ah, standardized testing, the bane of the K-12 cartel. For anybody who opposes standardized testing:
1) Next airline trip, choose a pilot who opted out of those troublesome FAA tests. Says nothing about self esteem and ability to work and play well with others.
2) For your colonoscopy, request a doctor who excels in cultural diversity and gender sensitivity. Those board exams are not an accurate reflection of empathy toward your problem.
3) In trouble with the law? You have the right to choose counsel who opted out of the bar exam, and if you cannot afford an unqualified lawyer, one will be appointed for you.
You're off to a good start, kid! Your teacher who is so opposed to testing, take comfort that they themselves have never taken a pass/fail exam in their career! You're in good hands!

It's actually MUCH WORSE than these numbers imply. A decade ago the SAT was re-normed because the original norms were too white and too mid-western. That had the effect of adding 90 points to each of the Math and Reading sections compared to when I took the test in the sixties. The "Smart" phone has turned out to be much dumber than the book.

25 years ago (with significantly less even taking it 15 and ten years ago) only kids with any intention of going to college took the test. Today, a significantly number of states "require" the test be taken and offer them "free" (LOLOLOLOL...meaning you pay for it indirectly in taxes or future debt so politicians can get lobbying money from the companies directly). So comparing the scores over this long term is pretty much meaningless wouldn't you say?
Well...I guess the Princeton Review screwed the pooch when they rewrote the exam questions few years back and changed the format and scoring. Since they dropped plans for the e-bonics section from the critical reading portion of the exam it has been WAY too stressful on the test takers. Issue may have to do with brain size. It looks like kids born into poverty have smaller brains. Believe is it is caused by a lack of opportunities for new experiences. They may be real good at watching cable, but with both parents working do they have the opportunity to read, go to museums, go on hikes, talk about and discover in a non stress filled environment.
