West Point Professor Calls For Military Strikes On Journalists Critical Of War On Terror

Tyler Durden's picture

Submittted by Cassius Methyl via TheAntiMedia.org,

An assistant professor from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point recently declared that professionals critical of the “War on Terror” constitute a “treasonous” opposition that should be subject to military force.

He believes the U.S. should have the right to attack people who are critical of U.S. military operations — specifically, professionals, legal scholars, journalists, and other people effectively spreading ideas that oppose war.

Professor William C. Bradford went as far as to publish a long academic paper in the National Security Law Journal that aggressively promotes suppressing dissent about military force, civilian casualties, and expanding military operations in the Middle East.

Using the excuse that victims would be “lawful targets,” Bradford argues that “law school facilities, scholars’ home offices and media outlets where they give interviews” should be targeted with military force to suppress dissent. He asserted that the war on terror should be expanded, “even if it means great destruction, innumerable enemy casualties, and civilian collateral damage.”

He further suggested that the U.S. should wage “total war” on “Islamism,” using “conventional and nuclear force and [psychological operations]” to “leave them prepared to coexist with the West or be utterly eradicated.”

He said that “Threatening Islamic holy sites might create deterrence, discredit Islamism, and falsify the assumption that decadence renders Western restraint inevitable.”

Despite his self-description as an “associate professor of law, national security and strategy,” a representative of the National Defense University has tried to distance the school from Bradford by saying he wasn’t part of the staff, but rather a contracted professor.

Sporting a long history of exaggeration and pro-military extremism, “He resigned from Indiana University’s law school in 2005 after his military record showed he had exaggerated his service,” according to The Guardian.

Though the man seems to be held in high esteem by the military, he spoke with such disregard for human rights that the National Security Law Journal had to apologize.

The NSLJ released a statement on the front page of its website, saying it “…made a mistake in publishing [the] highly controversial article…”

“The substance of Mr. Bradford’s article cannot fairly be considered apart from the egregious breach of professional decorum that it exhibits,” it admitted.  “We cannot ‘unpublish’ it, of course, but we can and do acknowledge that the article was not presentable for publication when we published it, and that we therefore repudiate it with sincere apologies to our readers.”

Ironically, Bradford has a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Harvard University with a focus in Human Rights Law.

This is a man who is apparently incorporating his violent philosophy into his teaching at West Point. He started on August 1st 2015 — after he published his article.

This is only the tip of the iceberg in forming a complete understanding of the ideological fabric held by many of the war hawks in U.S. Military.

The only paradox I can see is an incredible inability by the US government to protect its own borders with Mexico but an almost manic desire to cross and violate every other border on the planet.

Unless it is allowing the entry of Mexicans for use as a future cannon fodder, I am at pains to understand their rationale.

"trying to weaken it (America), degreade its morale and eventually subvert it to the point where the U.S. would be unable to defend itself."

Imagine... not invading Iraq- the counterbalance to Iran. Imagine keeping the fuck out of Syria. Imagine Lybia still controlled by ruthless dictator.

There would be no refugees invading Europe. The Islamists would continue to fight amongst themselves instead of the country that bombs them randomly from the air.

And tell me again that fairy tale about who actually is committing treason against America and her interests.

So let me get this straight. If he could be sent in a time capsule back to the time of the Vietnam War he would subject journalists to military force back then as well?

Perhaps the only force that should be exercised isa  retrospective abortion on his own mother.

Rather like all those economics profs who are sure QE is the way to go, or all those communist profs who teach that white people are bad and capitalism is wrong, or all those poli sci profs who are sure if we just have more welfare it'll all get better.

even the most vile of "professors" are afforded the best protection possible.  allowed to "resign" and move on with the least amount of taint.  the university is protected by the release yet the professor is also allowed the best possible status of release.  it's a club and they protect their own as best as possible.  all major gov't and quasi-gov't institutions are as such.  look at Hillary Clinton, vile, evil and yet still protected by the state as much as possible.

For a professor, he sounds like quite a dumbass. He should offer a bounty instead. It's inexpensive, and can be outsourced. It doesn't require deploying military assets, and all of the logistical and political bullshit that goes along with that. The dynamics change, and that would change the act from a government-backed assassination, to a criminal act. But, as any convicted murderer would tell you, the first one is expensive, the rest are free. Besides, life is cheap in developing nations.

Empire is dirty business.  It attracts people already like this, and creates them too.  This Bradford guy just showed up a little too soon.  The US already does all this stuff, but to this point we pretend otherwise.  Shelling the hotel in Baghdad where Al-Jazeera was headquartered was an intentional war crime.  That's just the example I can think of off the top of my head, but the US military is well-known globally for killing journalists.  It's clearly an element of US strategy.

That isn't really very surprising.  Every Empire eventually resorts to open brutality.  Look at what the French did in Algeria and Vietnam.  The British almost everywhere they went.  You can go all the way back to the Romans, and further back still.  No Empire has ever outnumbered those they have conquered, so all Empires have to use terror, murder, torture, and destruction.

Normal human beings can't brutalize other human beings and remain normal and functional.  So abnormal human beings are required.  Abnormal human beings can't build or maintain anything worth keeping, so Empires all fall eventually.  But not until the monsters have done so many monstrous things to so many people that enough people lose their fear of death and rise up to throw out the Bradfords of the Empire.

This guy just opened his mouth a few years before our cultural mythologies had changed enough to accept the reality of Empire and how Empires operate.

And, by the way, there are very few options remaining to save the US.  All of them begin with slicing a 0 off the war-machine budget.  Without a 90% reduction in spending on Empire, and a 100% reduction in spending keeping insolvent crony speculators pretending to be solvent, the USA will collapse sooner rather than later.  But the Bradfords of the Empire will make sure there is a bloodbath before final collapse.

In large, complex societies, the abnormal can thrive rather than being eliminated or at least marginalized as would happen in a smaller communnity setting.  And, in thriving long enough, their madness spreads until the society pulls itself apart.  History repeats for sure.

From the abstract - "[law professor dissidents claim that] Islamist jihadis a response to valid grievances against U.S. foreign policy, that civilian casualties and Abu Ghraib prove the injustice of the U.S. cause, that military action is an aggressive over-reaction, and that the U.S. is engaged in war crimes that breed terrorists, threaten the rule-of-law, and make us less safe."

Military members should be cautious of consequence when proposing the use of military force (a.k.a. "making war") upon the population who are engaged in Constitutional Free Speach.

There is no qualifying language in the First Amendment prohibition against Federal Government infringement of speech.  Perhaps someone can infringe, but the Federal Government and its employees cannot.  And the use of War Power to overthrow that Constitutional prohibition is the precise specified constitutional definition of Treason.

ON the contrary, I'm sure he's very bright.  He's a psychopath.  The market is booming in psychopathy right now, but our cultural myths haven't quite caught up yet.  Though, as the US political campaign season starts to heat up, it's quite clear to see that psychopathy is being heavily promoted.  There doesn't need to be a majority of psychopaths for Empire to take the next step.  Just a small number in the right places can create a critical mass.

This guy, like many psychopaths, lacks the ability to comprehend that many people find psychopathy abhorrent.  So while probably extremely intelligent, he doesn't understand that he needs to keep his mouth shut and mimic the normal people until he gains enough power to bring his horrifying desires into reality.  Eventually, the needs of Empire will require it.  But Bradford went off prematurely, so he will be shuffled off.  The really cunning and dangerous psychopaths are still there, making note of Bradford's indiscretion and learning from it.

To those who think our military would never fire on civilians.  Guess again.  Power corrupts....so when an 18 year old punk puts on a uniform and is handed a rifle, he becomes powerful.  This isn't your grandpa's military anymore.  Yes, I'm generalizing, but I think there are more service members who would fire on us if given the order than we realize, especially given all of their war-on-terror neocon brainwashing.

From the paper:

“Thus, for America to be chastised for violations of law, or worse, branded a rogue and anomic regime, threatens the fundament of U.S. legitimacy. Because the United States, like other democratic republics, requires public support to muster, deploy, and sustain military operations, and because allegations of law of armed conflict (LOAC) violations lodged against the U.S. strike at the legitimacy of a nation constituted by the rule of law and unwilling to prosecute ?illegal wars, these claims directly assault American political will.48 It matters not that Islamists repudiate all obligations to observe LOAC; what is necessary is that the U.S. will to fight them withers under allegations of American lawlessness. This is precisely why Islamist strategists have orchestrated a two-dimensioned operational plan consisting of an information element—a PSYOP campaign— supported by a military element—the unlawful use of armed force—to convince Americans that the United States is an evil regime that elected to fight an illegal war against Islam, that the United States systematically commits violations of law in prosecuting this war, that U.S. crimes erode national security and destroy core values, and that the only way the United States can restore its moral virtue, recommit to the rule of law, and protect itself, is to withdraw in defeat.” - THE CRITICAL LAW OF ARMED CONFLICT ACADEMY AS AN ISLAMIST FIFTH COLUMN, by William C. Bradford.

Apparently, good and moral governments embrace: indefinite detention, murdering suspects, spying on their citizens, domestic propaganda, civil forfeiture, starting revolutions, hijacking free markets and price discovery by QE, TBTF, TBTJ, Obummercare, etc…

Restoring our moral virtue, rule of law, and international respect will require a lot more than withdrawing and whitewashing the lies (Iraq WMD, they hate us for our freedoms /s, etc…) that got us into this mess.

It is not too late for peace.

This goes way beyond Wesley and his war mongering generalizations (or his war crimes against untermenschen in Europe), or HUAC and its Red Scare witchunts and actual imprisonments of the 50's.

He is suggesting the are (at least) 40 specific targets in US academic institutions today that should be assassinated, and collateral damage (innocent US citizens and property) is both justified and acceptable.

Agreed.  I have seen a few different theories on the McCarthy era events here but haven't looked into it yet, it seems obvious that something squirrely was going on.  The thing that should bother us the most is that it takes a complete admission by the guilty party for the majority of Americans to realize what is going on, anything short of admission doesn't suffice as reality.  Where would we be if the wolves didn't slip up and announce themselves and admit that they are on the hunt?

I've read through this paper. This reads like it came out of the Likud Party.

Perhaps it did.

I'm not being glib:

Does Jewish Law Justify Killing Civilians?

This article is part 10 of LoonWatch’s Understanding Jihad Series. Please read my “disclaimer”, which explains my intentions behind writing this article: The Understanding Jihad Series: Is Islam More Likely Than Other Religions to Encourage Violence?

Islamophobes like Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller claim that Islam is more violent than other religions, particularly Judaism and Christianity. To prove this, they argue that the Islamic holy book, the Islamic prophet, and the Islamic God are all uniquely violent–certainly more so than their Judeo-Christian counterparts.

We proved these claims completely bunk by showing the Bible to be far more violent than the Quran, the Biblical prophets to be far more violent than the Prophet Muhammad, and Yahweh of the Bible to be far more violent than Allah of the Quran. (See parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-i, 6-ii, 6-iii, 6-iv, 7, 8, 9-i, and 9-ii of LoonWatch’s Understanding Jihad Series.)

Instead of defending their initial claim (which they simply cannot), the Islamophobes quickly shift gears and rely on a fallback argument: they argue that “the Bible doesn’t actively exhort its believers to commit acts of violence, unlike the Quran.” I refuted this argument in part 6 (see 6-i, 6-ii, 6-iii, 6-iv) in an article entitled The Bible’s Prescriptive, Open-Ended, and Universal Commandments to Wage Holy War and Enslave Infidels.

Once that argument goes to the wayside the Islamophobes then jump to their next fall back argument: “most Jews and Christians don’t take the Bible literally like Muslims do the Quran!” I refuted this argument in part 7, showing that they do in fact understand the Bible very, very literally.

In a very predictable pattern, once this argument fails, the Islamophobes rely on yet another fall back argument, the famous cop-out “But That’s Just the Old Testament!”. I’ve refuted this argument in part 8.

Once this fall back argument is refuted, Islamophobes once again do not defend it. Instead, they move on to the next fall back argument: they argue that “Jews and Christians simply don’t interpret their holy book in a violent manner, unlike Muslims.” Writes Robert Spencer on p.31 of his book The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades):

When modern-day Jews and Christians read their Bibles, they simply don’t interpret the passages cited as exhorting them to violent action against unbelievers. This is due to the influence of centuries of interpretive traditions that have moved away from literalism regarding these passages. But in Islam, there is no comparable interpretive tradition. The jihad passages in the Qur’an are anything but a dead letter.

This is Spencer’s preemptive parry to any counterattack whenever anyone (like myself) responds to his cherry-picking of Quranic verses by reciprocating and finding similar (and even worse) passages in the Bible. We are told that modern-day Jews and Christians simply don’t take those passages seriously any more, that they are merely symbolic or that they are dead letters.

Spencer et al. will then take a break from copying-and-pasting Quranic passages, and instead focus on “classical opinions” in the Islamic tradition, which they claim continue to be to this day the “orthodox, mainstream opinions according to the four schools of Islamic jurisprudence [madhaib].” By contrast, argues Spencer, classical and modern-day orthodox, mainstream interpretations of Judaism and Christianity have moved away from literal understandings of the Bible and opted for non-violent, peaceful understandings.

However, I will prove that this is not the case at all. The violent verses in the Bible helped formulate the “classical opinions” of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and continue to be held by “mainstream, orthodox” groups today. In this article, we will examine the Jewish rabbinical tradition (both the “classical” and modern day situation); in a later article, we will grapple with the Christian side of things.
