New Record In Waiters And Bartenders Masks First Manufacturing Drop In Over 2 Years
In August, the reality of the oil crunch finally caught up with the BLS, when not only did the number of Mining and Logging employees decline again by 10,000 workers to 823K, the lowest since October 2011, an 8-month stretch of consecutive declines last seen during the previous recession driven by the ongoing weakness in the oil patch and the US shale drilling sector...
... but far more importantly for those tracking the US manufacturing recession, for the first time in over two years, the US manufacturing sector also lost workers, as 17,000 mfg lost their jobs. As shown in the chart below, this is the first time US manufacturing jobs have declined since July 2013, and the sudden drop means that only 28,000 manufacturing jobs have been added so far in 2015.
Considering the flurry of subprime-debt driven activity in US auto manufacturing, this was a very unexpected outcome, and those concerned that the US is about to enter, or already finds itself in, a manufacturing recession this will be the most important number in the months to come.
But don't worry: while US manufacturing may have peaked, US waiters and bartender are more than making up for it. In August, the US service economy grew by another 26,100 waiters and bartenders, bring the total to a record 11.1 million, thanks to 207,100 "food service and drinking places" jobs added in 2015: nearly 7 times more than manufacturing workers added over this period.
Putting this all together, since the start of the Second Great Depression, the US economy has lost 1.4 million manufacturing workers, but has more than made up for this with the addition ff 1.5 million waiters and bartenders.
And there, in one chart, is your minimum-wage recovery.

At least people are going out to eat! /s
Who wudda thunk "waiters and bartenders" couldn't afford durable manufactured goods?
They sure can afford houses and cars though..them's selling like hotcakes around here..plenty of "credit for that"...but never see 72 month financing for anything else.
Well, there's yer problem, these manufactures need to give the product away and hope thier customers eventually pay for it...aka 0% financing for at least 5 years.
Local furniture shop gave on "sales"...now it's never ending "Financing Events"...no interst for 3 years!...minimun $599 purchase...you gotta finance $599?...I ain't be selling you nuttin!
manufacturing drinks never wains.
Peak service.
lol
YoY change in all key categories . . .

Is this because those who recently lost a manufacturing job need a drink?
Beat me to it...

Our brave new world, such as it is, and what there is of it......
Dodge must be giving 10 year loans to anyone with a pulse.
The ghetto in my city is full of new Chargers and Challengers.
Last week I saw a welfare queen and her kids riding in a brand new Durango
There is an engine option on the Charger which produces 700 hp!!! Think they call it the "Sumbitch".
this is a great deal for the american middle class
free or discounted meals, tips and safer workplace. so what if you get paid less with no benefits and infrequent, last-minute work hours.
decorate your apron with some flair!
Yes, I much rather be served by a polite former petroleum engineer then a rude kid with a chip on his shoulders. It's nice for a change. Of course, going out to eat is a rare occassion now for us due to the robust rekovery effect of frozen and/or decreasing wages and benefits and very high food prices.
Good, we don't want those damn dirty factories in our country anyway. Let the Chinese deal with that filth and build our cheap trinkets. We don't need a manufacturing base, what could possibly go wrong?
Haven't you seen those ghastly sinking slimy fat repositories behind those restaurants?! And those interesting low lives that collect that putrid sludge they collect? ..... Wait a sec... Strike that.
Miffed;-)
Miffed, I know of a few very industrious people who have old VW Rabbits (diesel), who get that oil/grease for free, strain it with cheese cloth and use it a fuel in their cars. I kid you not when they go by, it smells like a mobile french fry factory!
I guess McDonald's is laying off again...
(Flipping burgers was re-classified as a mfg. job a few years back)
We need people to fill the new jobs filling EBT cards and processing 'disability' claims.
When war comes our bar and grill based economy will adroitly shift to molotov cocktails and potato cannons.
What is the best way to store potatoes? Vodka!
three hots and a cot.....that is if you are living in your parents basement..or jail
Sub-prime cocktail loans! No money down, bad credit...
Our cocktails meet the EPA E-25 requirement.
We don't need heavy industry anymore - the 'new' economy of Uber pizza delivery, dick tatoos and designer marijuna cookies is the commanding heights now.....bitchez.
See Chad over there?
He has 30 pieces of FLAIR!
The nazis had flair. I'll take the extreme fajitas.
If they start their Russian & Chinese Rosetta Stone courses now, they should be fine in the future...
Language is a tricky thing. A girl in my nephews cless is from Cambodia. She said when things got bad they had to learn Vietnamese and scaddaddle there. Then to China where she learned Mandarin...then they made it across to Canada and learned English and some French.
And now she said, who could have predicted; she needs to learn Spanish!
the new American economy,'cheeburger cheeburger cheeburger'
The rich need servants.
Unfortunately if you run the numbers the ratio is a bit off and not in our favor.

wait till 15 bucks an hour goes into effect!
Make mine a double. Cheers !!
The local Retirement home (Ann's Choice) hires lots of teenagers to serve meals to the residents.
Every one of 'em is a WAITER!
How many Retirement homes are there in 'merica?
It shouldn't be long before a smart analyst finds the BLS stats by Age group!
and unlike most manufacturing jobs,
most food service jobs are full-time, with better pay and benefits ! !
(thanks to Big Ag companies like Monsanto, we can have the 'dollar menu'
and enjoy healthy fast foods and corn sugar drinks)
addendum: plastic utensils and styrofoam save dishwashing expenses
Not only that, its much cheaper to eat out. Using gas in the car to get there and having to ''tip'' someone to serve you food.
Long ago I worked food service and only a few jobs were full time. Most were rarely over 30 hours. Both my kids experienced the same. 32 hours was top so if anyone called in, they had a buffer not to pay overtime if they needed to call them in. They much preferred to hire "seasonal" so when the summer rush was over they could eliminate their jobs.
Service jobs are wonderful for teaching a kid responsibility and how to work hard. It certainly kept my kids in school determined to do something more lucrative. I can't believe most of my associates never required their kids to do this and many of them are the proverbial basement dwellers.
Restaurant jobs, unless high end, don't pay a living wage and were never meant to. Frankly I don't see how many will stay open with the increasing costs of food and labor. Profit margins must be shrinking, especially for the mom and pops.
I realize you are being sarcastic. ;-)

With 1.5 million extra waitresses and bartenders, who's ordering all these extra meals and drinks?
People too lazy to cook for themselves and have so much money they don't mind spending 10 bucks for a Burger and fries when they could make 5 burgers and fries for 10 bucks at home.
Hey, my favorite thing to make for dinner is reservations. Who the fuck wants to cook dinner after making my own breakfast and lunch?
And I tip well - I too was a waiter/bus boy, in a sorority no less, in college to get through my sophomore year. Best incentive to bust your ass and do 'whatever it takes' to get the degree(s)[in my case in business], and not have to waiter professionally when you grow up.
The Fed and their staff are more than aware of these dynamics. So it still begs: Why all the consternation and market divination over a measly .25 points...?
Jimmy John's is hiring ...
(they'll accept any talentless scumbag)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QtpgKxPFAg
THis is probably more the reason why Jimmy John's sucks:
Folks, if you are going to eat: eat local. Support small biz: it tastes better, they treat employees better, and enjoy the small biz food while small biz is still left in the US before the government kills them all off for their corporate masters.
Want to save money? Cook food at home. At least you know what someone hasn't blown their nose in it, or dumped a load of sperm into it.
I would never eat in any restaurant in the USA.
Plus 1000 shizz - I live in a small town, and we don't have any of the fucking cheap ass chain fast food places (another advantage of small towns). Had dinner last night at a great little place started by my next 40 over neighbor, since sold to another neighbor's child, whom I held in my arms when she was a baby - a compatriot of my daughter. They start with really good ingredients and make really good food, specializing in crepes and excellent salads, and have live music from local musicians. What's not to like?
The other places I eat at are all owned by people I have known for many years, who try to pay living wages and serve good stuff.
Like shizz sez: eat local, support small biz - fuck the chains and their slave labor and shit food.
Oh, and Alfred E: You might try eating at a small local place, maybe one where you know one of the waiter(esses) or cooks or the owner. Even if you don't, treat your wait person like a human being, thank 'em when they bring stuff or come around to re-water your glass, if the food is really good, stick your head in the kitchen and give the cook(s) a thumbs up on the way out - you have no idea how much that means to the working stiffs that are preparing and bringing you a meal. Tipping 20% helps too, but your attitude towards the staff means as much. And you will never have to worry about sperm in your salad.
Americans, like us here in Aussieland are very lucky that we dont need any more Factories to make Goods. We let our Chines Slaves make all the Stuff for us and they are quite happy to except those pieces of Paper that says Dollar. We know they are not worth anything, but they think they are real Money. Trouble is with the Printing Presses running red hot it's the main reason for global warming and when it gets to hot will have to be shut down. We will be in big trouble then.
the feds should legalize, regulate and tax drugs and hookers. jobs jobs jobs
Doesn't the US manufacture spaceships to Mars or something?
Yes, they do and we would like to honour the chosenites to be the first group of people to take a trip to Mars.
May you see the plunder.
Zion is a scheme, not an ethnicity..
On the wrong side of the bed
And how I got to thinkin'
About all those things you said
About ordinary people
And how they make you sick
And if callin names kicks back on you
Then I hope this does the trick 'Cause I'm sick of your complainin'
About how many bills
And I'm sick of all your bitchin'
'Bout your poodles and your pills
And I just can't see no humor
About your way of life
And I think I can do more for you
With this here fork and knife Eat the Rich: there's only one thing that they're good for
Eat the Rich: take one bite now - come back for more
Eat the Rich: I gotta get this off my chest
Eat the Rich: take one bite now, spit out the rest
I'm a Newby so:
I would love to see a chart going out a couple decades as to how millions of people formerly in manufacturing, and now in crap jobs with no bennies will affect the economy going forward.
There are skilled people who've taken a job at whatever pays enough. These people are supposed to be in their peak earning years, where they accumulate their nest egg.
We also pay ever higher taxes ro support bloated local government pensions. I will take comfort in knowing that while I'm eating catfood, that some 49 yr. Old retired bureaucrat is livin large. . . It's the least I can do
bartenders manufacture cocktails - right? Just expand the definition.
53 old retired firemen receiving $100,000/year in todays fiats plus bennies are gonna be a drag on muni budgets for a long, long time to come. 30 years work and 30-year retirement is brutal on budgets.
I'm my own bartender...and grandpa too! Happy Labor Day!
