The NASA employees and the contractors had to pass background checks to be able to hold "Secret" or higher security clearances. Partly because of that (and besides being high order geeks), they tended to be conservative, brilliant, and rather insular. Being around them was a bit like stepping back to a more virtuous time.
Now, I don't know. One thing about which I am convinced is that if the NASA culture has degraded in parallel with that of what is found in banking and finance today, all you would have to do to get some scientists to lie or at least look the other way would be to walk into the break room and say, "Job cuts."
Would scientists or professors ever lie? Take one good long look at the FDA and Monsanto.
