698K Native-Born Americans Lost Their Job In August: Why This Suddenly Is The Most Important Jobs Chart

Tyler Durden's picture

After the Fed admitted over a year ago that the US unemployment rate (which in 2012 was supposed to be a rate hike "threshold" once it hit 6.5% and is now at 5.1%) has become irrelevant in a country where a record 94 million people have left the labor force, and with the Fed poised to hike rates even though US hourly wages have not only not increased for the past 7 years, but for the vast majority of the labor force continue to decline, some have asked - is there any labor-related chart that matters any more?

The answer: a resounding yes, only it is none of the conventional charts that algos and sometimes humans look at.

The one chart that matters more than ever, has little to nothing to do with the Fed's monetary policy, but everything to do with the November 2016 presidential elections in which the topic of immigration, both legal and illegal, is shaping up to be the most rancorous, contentious and divisive.

The chart is the following, showing the cumulative addition of foreign-born and native-born workers added to US payrolls according to the BLS since December 2007, i.e., since the start of the recession/Second Great Depression.

The chart is especially important because what it shows for just the month of August will be enough to provide the Trump - and every other - campaign with enough soundbites and pivot points to last it for weeks on end: namely, that in August a whopping 698,000 native-born Americans lost their job. This drop was offset by 204,000 foreign-born Americans, who got a job in the month of August.

But the punchline: since December 2007, according to the Household Survey, only 790,000 native born American jobs have been added. Contrast that with the 2.1 million foreign-born Americans who have found a job over the same time period...

... and you have a combustible mess that will lead to serious fireworks during the next GOP primary.

Native-born Americans are illiterate, lazy, self-entitled, and lack any kind of real skill set. It's been taht way since about 1968, when the boomer generation began to smoke pot in high school.

I've never "lost" a job. I was fired once for mouthing off to the boss, but I didn;t want to work there anyway. I'm self employed, and I'm so freakin' busy, I can't stand it. Why am I different? Because I taught myself to fucking read, for one thing. I sure as hell didn't learn how to in school. Then, I taught myself some higher math, and some real skills, since they don't teach anyone these types of things any more. Then, I hired myself out as a skilled worker in my own business.

I'm nobody special. Not from a privileged background, unless white trash is "privileged" vis a vis the other trailer park inhabitants of color. But I did somehow decide I wasn't going to be anyone's bitch, either as a worker drone or a welfare parasite. Once I decided that, it became clear what I had to do: I had to fucking learn how to fucking read. everythign else is downstream of that.

Immigrants aren't lazy. They're motivated. It might be "easy" to cross the border. The rest of getting here isn't so easy. Rapists, thieves, coyotes who demand exorbitant fees and then leave their clients stranded in the desert... if someone gets here, they are motivated to make their investment pay off. What investment did a native-born American make? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Oh, wah! I wost my job! Mean ol' bankers n' captawists! Twump wiw save me!

Oh, fucking please. Murca is dead.

Relatively lower H-1B wages are supplemented by citizenship for newborns and subsequent citizenship for the entire extended family along with welfare programs for the young and the "poor" elderly.

Billionaires using the fiat "largess" of the US welfare state to make the pay of the one worker of the family seem good by third world standards while destroying the US middle class completely.

White's and Blacks are the most natural allies in defending America.  This is why TPTB plays us against each other.  European whites founded this nation.  It was partially built on the backs of slaves who have been detached from their ancestral heritage and have no choice but to be American.  The end of slavery should have given us one shared American culture.  If not for race baiters on either side, whose moptivations and funding are direct from the oligarchy, Blacks and Whites would be carrying the vanguard of the US side by side.

please, blacks can not exist without whites and no matter how hard whites try blacks follow bringing with them fergusson behaviour. their ideal is in africa living in fear of some feudal warlord this matrix is not an accident of fate, its what they want and deserve. just like muslims under saddam hussein they love the unstable strong man who may or may not destroy them at any minute. whites created their own system for the benefit of all who produced for the benefit of all, blacks could never understand that because taking is their way of life as has been for centuries. they have only devolved since segregation ended and will continue until they reach a state of feral animal, the bad news is they will live next door by then thanks to obama.

I've hear that African black folk don't like American black folk-or their behavior.

cynicalskeptic's picture

Recent black Carribean immigrants don't seem to be too impressed either.   Those coming here seem to work like mad and disparage American blacks who 'have it easy' in comparison.   I've seen Jamaicans working as domestics living apart from their husbands - with kids in boarding school back home, thrilled that they could earn so much more here than back home.  A few mechanics are thrilled that they can simply order the parts they need when back home they sometimes had to - literally MAKE them.  Slavery in the islands was usually FAR worse than in the US - sugar plantations worked slaves to death under brutal conditions.  After the end of slaveryexisattence was often marginal and unrelentingly hard.  The US provided OPPORTUNITY that they did not have back home and they welcomed it.  One Haitian - from a country where slaves fought for their independence and fought to preserve it - denigrated Americans with a line you'd expect to hear from a white racist.  'They're still waiting for their 40 acres and a mule.'

As a counterpoint, black Americans are still at the lowest rung on the ladder economically, with those above them increasingly fighting to hold onto what they have while newcomers compete for the same jobs.

if language means anything OBAMA IS NOT A MARXIST.  leninist possibly.

the means of production are not in the hands of the workers nor is he trying to get them there.  is he?

ZD1's picture

Obama is a MARXIST.

Marxism: The political and economic philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in which the concept of class struggle plays a central role in understanding society's allegedly inevitable development from bourgeois oppression under capitalism to a socialist and ultimately classless society.

Marxist: One that believes in or follows the ideas of Marx and Engels. A person who has radical ideas or opinions.

Marxism has been a major influence in modern American liberalism since the 1960s and has played a large role in Obama’s life.

Bobbyrib's picture

ZD1's picture

Obama is full of MARXIST rhetoric that he is allowed to put into action (just as long as none of the TBTF bankers don't go to jail).

Obama thinks that the free market produces unfair results because it pursues profit (the people at the top will keep the common people down) and state intervention must be used to run the economy “democratically,” so that the wealth can be “spread” and serve human needs.

Bobbyrib's picture

You forgot the 1 stardard deviation difference in mean IQ (85 vs 100).  If not for that reality its unlikely negros would have ever been enslaved as they at least would have developed the wheel (but that requires the geometric concept of the circle, and geometry doesn't it?).  Warm climates make for easy living, but at the expense of cognitive evolution.  Or as Dickens put it so eloquently,  "the best steel comes from the hottest furnaces"

Bobbyrib's picture

As someone who works in service, I have to say there is no way the average caucasian's IQ is 100. Unless they inflated IQ scores like they did with SAT scores.

Ghost Writer's picture

100 is average by definition and needed for comparison

If not the curve will be adjusted accordingly

The big failing of IQ tests is that they do not measure creativity, motivation, ability to work with others, and a slew of other equally important criteria.

And you will see floors, entire floors, where every single person is from Chindia, they all bring their families and they all have plenty of kids

First no, that's not true. Second, h1-bs earn ~$100k median at those firms. Third, if 'mericans can't do the jobs, that's not the immigrants fault. US needs a better / more equitable education system or yes, these companies WILL be filled with recent << actually qualified >> immigrants. Is google supposed to fill the shop with unqualified workers based on 'american born' criteria to satisfy stupid republican voters?

If you're mad about h1-b you should be complaining about US education system instead.

ZD1's picture

James_Cole the libtard troll posting about 'merica like he's an expert when he lives in the UK and once visited San Diego years ago.

SoCal Edison in Southern California was replacing $95,000 annual wage earners with H1-B visa workers who earned $60,000 to $65,000 instead.

James_Cole's picture

“We don’t need foreign workers. We have plenty of Americans who are fully capable and equipped to carry out these jobs. It’s an absolute issue of corporate greed; nothing more nothing less,” former Edison employee and Marine Pat Lavi

It's funny to see that on breibart because the quote is such a liberal POV whereas breibart is mostly hard right. On the other hand the 'merican right is highly schizoid on such things, so makes sense.

The h1-b fulfills a need but there are obviously many issues with it. I'm not saying in every instance it's the right solution or that it is never abused. I just know foreign born workers in silicon valley (multi-decade people) - why they get hired etc. Also know from recruiters at those firms what they really feel about h1-b. American education system is not producing many 'fully capable' cadidates who are american born, that is the reality.

Does insourcing displace american workers for cheaper equivalent? Of course, lots of news magazines have reported on this, disney springs to mind as one of the most egregious abusers of insourcing tech workers.

ZD1's picture

James_Cole the libtard troll who lives in the UK on the dole.

You don't live in the U.S. and you don't have a clue about the U.S. so quit acting like you do.

74 percent of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) graduates in the U.S. do not work in STEM jobs because of H1-B and other worker visas who are paid less.

So tell us about how much you enjoy servicing your muzzie masters in the UK?

James_Cole's picture

Clearly you didn't read the rest of your own link (the below is from YOUR LINK, check it):

In fact, STEM grads were more likely to land jobs in their degree fields than all other graduates with the exception of education and health care – two very specialized fields.

Bonnie Dunbar, director of the University of Houston STEM Center, said she continues to see a STEM labor shortage, attributable in part to poor math course offerings by inner-city high schools.

“When companies get engineers from India and China, it’s because we don’t have a local supply,” Dunbar said.

Of all college graduates, only law degree recipients reported higher median earnings than those with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, according to Census estimates. Similarly, STEM grads are also employed at higher rates than their peers.

In fact, the Brookings Institution estimates about half of STEM jobs are available to workers without bachelor's degrees.

Of the larger metro areas, STEM jobs account for the highest share of total employment in San Jose and Washington, D.C. STEM jobs not requiring four-year degrees are most prevalent in places like Baton Rouge and Birmingham, according to the Brookings analysis.

So here's another link from Mother Jones which is a leftwing rag that you would approve of which explains how H-1B visas are screwing American tech workers:

Now tell us how much you enjoy servicing your muzzie masters while living on the dole in the UK?

There are other types of work visas in the U.S. that multi-national firms use to avoid hiring U.S. citizens:

H2B Visa - temporary visa for short term work such as in the hospitality and tourist industries

E3 Visa  - similar to the H1B but is available to Australian Citizens only

TN1 Visa  - similar to the H1B but is available to Canadian & Mexican Citizens only

L1 Visa  -  for senior employees who work for Company outside the USA and want to transfer to same Companies offices in the USA

J1 Work Training Visa  -  short term training/learning visa to further your skills in the USA and then return to your home Country to apply them

Obamacare offers firms $3,000 incentive to hire illegals over native-born workers.

Under the president’s new amnesty, businesses will have a $3,000-per-employee incentive to hire illegal immigrants over native-born workers because of a quirk of Obamacare.

President Obama’s temporary amnesty, which lasts three years, declares up to 5 million illegal immigrants to be lawfully in the country and eligible for work permits.

Under the Affordable Care Act, that means businesses who hire them won’t have to pay a penalty for not providing them health coverage — making them $3,000 more attractive than a similar native-born worker, whom the business by law would have to cover.

ZD1's picture

The Department of Justice has accused a business of discrimination due to the company requiring employees to show proof of citizenship for employment.

The DOJ  claims that Nebraska Beef Ltd., a Nebraska-based meat packing company, “required non-U.S. citizens, but not similarly-situated U.S. citizens, to present specific documentary proof of their immigration status to verify their employment eligibility.”

After receiving pressure from the government, Nebraska Beef agreed to pay $200,000 in a civil penalty settlement and said they will establish an uncapped back pay fund for people who lost wages because they could not prove they are in the country legally.

ZD1's picture

The Democrat National Committee brags about hiring an illegal alien:

Judicial Watch, the watchdog on federal government, is calling on the Federal Election Commission to investigate the employment by the Democratic National Committee of an illegal alien in potential violation of federal rules and regulations.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said it’s no wonder the U.S. has a border crisis.

“Not only do we have a major political party knowingly employing an illegal alien, but also openly boasting about it to the nation’s press,” he said.

“The DNC should be held accountable by the FEC for hiring an illegal alien in violation of both federal immigration and election laws. Frankly, the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security should also take appropriate law enforcement action.”

Don't hold your breath waiting for the investigation...

James_Cole's picture

So here's another link from Mother Jones which is a leftwing rag that you would approve of which explains how H-1B visas are screwing American tech workers

And they're not wrong in what they say, but they are mostly talking about a forthcoming bill and also point out these two details:

ComputerWorld revealed last week that the top 10 users of H-1B visas last year were all offshore outsourcing firms such as Tata and Infosys.

>>> computerworld:

Based on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) data analyzed, the major beneficiaries of the proposed increase in the cap would be pure offshore outsourcing firms.

(i.e. not Google and MSFT)<<<

Even detractors of the H-1B visa program concede that it can fill important roles, such as encouraging brilliant foreigners to permanently relocate to the United States. EPI immigration expert Daniel Costa suggests a couple of tweaks to the I-Squared Act: Require employers to prove that they've tried to recruit Americans before applying for foreign workers, and make sure that H-1B workers get paid as much as Americans do for comparable jobs. "If that was fixed," he says, "I think it would be a different story."

Like many things people argue about, there are good aspects and bad. The trick in life is finding the right formula so that the good far exceeds the bad.

natxlaw's picture

Nope, everything you are saying is trade group lobbyist horse shit. When I worked in telecom back in the day they said "there's three jobs open for every high tech worker" during the late 90s. Then in 2001, suddenly there were company wide hiring freezes, even for interns who'd spent all four summers with one company. These lobbying groups have one purpose, drive down wages. Microsoft was lobbying for more H1Bs this year even as they laid off 10,000 employees. If you can't figure that one out, you are just too dumb to live.

Bobbyrib's picture

The English love telling the rest of the world how to live (mostly while robbing them blind).

fallout11's picture

Correct, and on this even ideological opposites such as Robert Reich (D) and Paul Craig Roberts (R) agree: There are not enough jobs for the 368k US STEM graduates each year, and H1B's and the like get a majority of the ones that do exist. Microsoft/Bill Gates has been specifically taken to task by both for asking for more and more H1B opportunities while claiming there are not enough skilled and trained Americans technical workers "willing to work for third world wages", and continuing to lay off the ones they already do have. This is the same reason robots are replacing manufacturing workers (they're cheaper).
I work in engineering, and the field is saturated, far more qualified applicants than there are jobs for them. Its a race to the bottom, pay is stagnant or falling for roughly a decade for many specializations.

For those of you wanting more information on the H-1B issues, let me offer these links (from an older list I compiled years ag).

and these reports, commentaries:
“In 2012, there were more than twice as many people with STEM degrees (immigrant and native) as there were STEM jobs — 5.3 million STEM jobs vs. 12.1 million with STEM degrees,” Camarotta said. “Only one-third of natives who have a STEM degree and hold a job do so in a STEM occupation.”

In fact, as Camarotta explains it, the “skilled-labor shortage” argument is little more than a con game waged on Congress and the American public by corporate interests seeking to further their goal of open borders or what they call “labor mobility.”
