698K Native-Born Americans Lost Their Job In August: Why This Suddenly Is The Most Important Jobs Chart

Tyler Durden's picture

After the Fed admitted over a year ago that the US unemployment rate (which in 2012 was supposed to be a rate hike "threshold" once it hit 6.5% and is now at 5.1%) has become irrelevant in a country where a record 94 million people have left the labor force, and with the Fed poised to hike rates even though US hourly wages have not only not increased for the past 7 years, but for the vast majority of the labor force continue to decline, some have asked - is there any labor-related chart that matters any more?

The answer: a resounding yes, only it is none of the conventional charts that algos and sometimes humans look at.

The one chart that matters more than ever, has little to nothing to do with the Fed's monetary policy, but everything to do with the November 2016 presidential elections in which the topic of immigration, both legal and illegal, is shaping up to be the most rancorous, contentious and divisive.

The chart is the following, showing the cumulative addition of foreign-born and native-born workers added to US payrolls according to the BLS since December 2007, i.e., since the start of the recession/Second Great Depression.

The chart is especially important because what it shows for just the month of August will be enough to provide the Trump - and every other - campaign with enough soundbites and pivot points to last it for weeks on end: namely, that in August a whopping 698,000 native-born Americans lost their job. This drop was offset by 204,000 foreign-born Americans, who got a job in the month of August.

But the punchline: since December 2007, according to the Household Survey, only 790,000 native born American jobs have been added. Contrast that with the 2.1 million foreign-born Americans who have found a job over the same time period...

... and you have a combustible mess that will lead to serious fireworks during the next GOP primary.

This is what cracks me up.  We have government agencies who are theoretically interested in deporting illegal workers.  They ACT like they are busy searching for workers that are here illegally.

Here in Dallas, you can walk into any restaurant kitchen, any car dealership, any landscape company, any construction site and any number of other businesses and find illegals without breaking a sweat.

But nothing of the sort is happening because AMERICAN BUSINESS WANTS ILLEGAL LABOR - END OF STORY.  And American businessmen CALL THE FUCKING TUNE pal.

Stop hiring them and stop patronizing their businesses.

Ask the business owner you trade with if all their employees are here legally and if they can prove it.

PURE XENOPHOBIA

Same old story.  Any time the US economy goes down, it's always ... "Let's kick the Hispanic immigrants in the butt".  This game of name-calling has been happening in America for decades and decades.

The LOSS of American jobs is due to the fact that US manufacturing has shifted overseas.  Talk to the international companies about that ... they've got head offices in the USA.  Funny how most of these companies aren't paying much of anything ...  in the way of taxes to the US Government.

Most imigrants from South of the Border do NOT come from Mexico.  They are immigrants from Central America.  Sure, they may be crossing through Mexico, but that does not make them Mexican.

The whole party line from Trump is hogwash - designed to get people stirred up, and to hide the fact that Donald Trump does not know how to fix the US economy.

I figure I may as well get down voted along with you.

A number of years back I remember reading a story in the LA Times I believe.  Border Patrol or Immigration pulled over a Mexican in a pickup truck who didn't have any ID.

Anyway this 'Mexican" was entitled to a phone call and he got it.  He made one call and shit hit the fan.

He an was American born Latino, a vet, who owned a service station and just so happened to be the mayor of Pasedena I think it was.

Last year they deported a teenager who suffered from downs or other mental condition.  His mother was worried sick as he was let go in Tijuana with no money.  He was a gringo too.

Dang, anyone who looks a little brown on the outside best watch out as when they start looking to kick those damn brown illegals there will be native born vets, children, women business owners and such getting dumped somewhere down south.

If it wasn't so ridiculous it would be funny.

The "immigration reform" we need is to shut down ALL immigration until those already here adopt the American culture.

No more immigrants -- legal or illegal -- until we get our house in order.

And then, when we allow immigration again, we do so only so as to benefit America and Americans -- not to dilute the WASP culture, which was the goal of the 1965 Immigration Reform Act demanded and pushed by you-know-who because they see white Christians as their greatest threat.

Ted Kennedy is not responsible for the Immigration Act of 1965

In his talk on Jewish power, Joe Biden included immigration and refugee policy as illustrations of how Jews have changed America.

Kennedy was a freshman senator with little clout. His role in leading the bill came about because it was a slam dunk following the liberal landslide in the 1964 election. The Senate hearings on the bill were so perfunctory that the statements of opponents were given in Kennedy’s office; these were mainly old line patriotic organizations like the Daughters of the American Revolution which by that time got absolutely no respect from elites. The bill was written by Norbert Schlei who was Jewish, and its official name is the Hart-Cellar bill; Emmanuel Cellar spent his entire career in Congress as a leader in opposition to immigration restriction, beginning with his hostility to the 1924 law which enshrined quotas favoring Northwestern Europeans. One should also mention the role of Jacob Javits in the Senate. As soon as the bill was passed, Jewish organizations focused their efforts on increasing the numbers of immigrants. Ted Kennedy may not have lied when said the bill would not change America. But in conjunction with the later efforts of Jewish activists, demographic change was inevitable.

But that’s the least of it. The 1965 law was the culmination of a 40-year effort by the Jewish community to overturn the 1924 law. My version of the story, with numerous references to the roles of Jewish organizations, Jewish-organized and Jewish-funded committees, and Jewish legislative leaders like Javits and Cellar, is here.

You are correct.

There was a moratorium on immigration up until I believe 1964, so as to give the wave of immigrants that came in the late 19th and early 20th century a chance to acclimate and adapt to being "Americans"

They knew back then that hyphenated americans had no place here, that those coming here needed to add value, not to be takers.

The old country needs to be left at the dock.....

Cuz the first thing an immigrant does after finding a home, is get a job. They would ALWAYS have a higher propensity to find work out of desperation. Native born yanks...not so much.

Also, minimum wage goes up, and native born yanks go out the door in favor of immigrants willing to work for market value.

He is leaving behind a place where they have no cars, they have electricity part of they day and they cook on butane stoves and have no air conditioning. Yes - there is a shortage of engineers, in Seattle, who will work for 45K/year - in part because the average family home in the area requires that someone have an income of 100K+ OR being willing to share with 17 other relatives like an Indian slum. I live in Indianapolis now, and get paid roughly what I was making in Seattle. We are in the "Third world" war already. In Minnesota, these immigrants are not coming here on their own accord. They are being shoveled in large numbers by agencies like The Lutheran Brotherhood. This agency has a budget of some 114 million; 96 of which comes from the Federal Gov.  The female head of the agency is paid over 400,000 a year.  Native citizens are not made aware of the invasion until they show up. The "government" pays for the first three months then the support falls on the local state, school and medical facilities

now, oh my brothers, who is behind such transfers

Remember to credit (blame) the unholy alliance of Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, who forged a bi-partisan alliance to give us NAFT, WTO, and the ending of Glass-Steagall. Look forward to next year when Obama and Boehner will push through the Trans Pacific and Trans Atlantic partnerships. That will render the concepts of "country and countrymen" to be nothing more than quaint anachronisms.

"Native born" (born in the United States) is not the same as "natural born" (born in the US of US Citizen parents).

The Preamble of the Constitution says explicitely that the rights of citizenship descend to the "prosterity" of US Citizens (Children of US Citizens)

POSTERITY (Merriam- Webster) 1 :  the offspring of one progenitor to the furthest generation 2 :  all future generations There is no such thing in the US onstitution of "birthright citizenship". Citizens are either born or naruralized by the power of Congress to enact Uniform naturalization law. The natural born need no naturalization-- they are the posterity. Here is what Senator Howard, the sponsor of the Amendment said during the proceedings of its enactment: ‘‘This amendment which I have offered is simply declaratory of what I regard as the law of the land already, that everyperson born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction , is by   natural law and national law  a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the  US who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of embassadors or ministers accredited to the United States, but will include every other class of persons.”

There's an ELEPHANT in the room! Who is pushing for mass immigration, given the assimilation problems and social unrest it causes? There is virulent anti-immigration in Europe and the U.S, even in countries with zero to little immigration like the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia and Poland(who happen to be eternal immigrants themselves) yet the left and RIGHT continue to allow immigration against the will of the general public. Something bigger is at play. It looks like they're preparing the groundwork for classic divide and rule tactics, while the general public is pillaged by the money changers and the corporations. we'll be too busy arguing amongst each other to realise we are being robbed.

I am not in agreement with your scenario. You start prognosticating about the mob in America, I guarantee your level of inaccuracy will be higher than a cat's back.

The problem with immigration is not the immigrants, it is the Method, Means, and Ends by which the government imports them.

- Imports by selectively ignoring Laws and Regulations for foreigners that apply to Native-Borns.

- Uses the earnings of the same Native-Borns disadvantaged by the regulatory tilt towards foreigners to directly pay the foreigners for coming.

- Imports foreigners for the twin purposes of avoiding financial responsibility for the Social Ponzi schemes that they have created, and to politically dispossess the populace of the country in favor of a created depended 'serf' voting block.

Or, you could use that chart to show that, since 2010.  Native born folks have gained 9 million jobs, while non-native born folks got three million.

My kingdom for a narrative-free reading of stats!

Our replacements... migrants.

Alvin Gouldner put it this way, “Marx said, ‘Philosophy is the head of emancipation, and the proletariat is the heart.’ But it takes a great deal of fancy theoretical footwork—in short, of ideology and false consciousness—to assume that the head and heart of politics are always integrated and have identical interests. Indeed, much of the discussion among Marxists today, concerning the failure of the proletariat as an historical force thus far, is in effect a discussion about the possibility of a ‘heart transplant’; that is, of replacing the proletariat with another historical actor: e.g., students, blacks, third world forces, etc. Intellectuals are capable of being an autonomous political force and when one social group does not play the role they have assigned to it, when it fails in its ‘historical responsibility’, intellectuals will often shop around for another client group to ‘represent’. False consciousness is generated when the special, vested interests of intellectuals are deemed illegitimate and are therefore concealed, and when intellectuals feel they must pretend to be representatives of another group’s interests.”

Maybe talk to the sizeable chunk of people who lost their careers - careers they felt meant something - when the NOT FOR PROFIT Exchanges shuttered their trading floors. We had to defend against accusations of thievery all the time. Many, many people from the floors understood and understand today what a FIDUCIARY OBLIGATION is. The thievery occurring now - where it cannot be detected readily, and even if it could would not be prosecuted, is a metastasizing cancer. It is Government sanctioned theft.

"...a whopping 698,000 native-born Americans lost their job. This drop was offset by 204,000 foreign-born Americans, who got a job in the month of August."

Subtracting the foreign born workers from the nearly 700,000 who lost jobs leaves about 500,000 suddenly unemployed Americans (the vast majority of those losing work in August) who have NOT been replaced by anyone.  The problem is less about foreign workers and more about structural unemployment in the USA.  Barring some national education/employment intiative, this trend will simply continue.  I realize this fact doesn't play as well with the racism and xenophobia here at ZH, but there you have it...

I'm an immigration attorney - now unemployed becuase much of that work is in Spanish or the labor can literally be off-shored.  When you do an H-1B, you arrange data so that it looks like the lower wage is indeed within the prevailing wage.  So the law says that it preserves wage rates, but it in reality the lawyers make it so the company can pay a foreigner less.  Why do you think they pay a lawyer to do the case - cuz diversity? lel
