Happy "$15 Minimum Wage" Labor Day From McDonalds

Coming to, or rather from, every forced "minimum wage" provider near you. And don't forget to thank your micromanaging, centrally-planning government.

I just saw a great example of the backwards reality we are in while watching a financial debate.  One guy has made plenty of great calls over the years and is sitting infront of a beautiful tropical panorama view, the other guy is sitting in a dumpy room with a 3' tall particle board bookshelf behind him.  Now, I'm not a super materialistic person and I respect conservativism but this guy is ignorant dick.

The guy with the history of predicting events is calling very troubled times and most likely this fall, the particle board guy is being snide, condescending and is basically dishing out the MSM Schiff treatment.  Who are you going to listen to in a situation like that?  Apparently, people should also stop listening to the increase the minimum wage crowd, by their fruits you shall know them.

Sounds staged to me. If everyone's predicting the same thing, it ain't likely. Still more likely than $15/ min. wage, at least, until dollar collapse.

This was going to happen even if the wages weren't mandated, its only a matter of time.

Also, businesses all go through life-cycles, no business is meant to last forever.... businesses are supposed to grow and die just like people.... McDonalds wont even exist in 100 years.

Probably less than 200 businesses in the U.S. that are even 150 -200 years old ish.

In anycase McDonalds food is shit/worthless, they should just convert everything to buffet style.... a giant platter of fries in the center, stacks of burgers and nuggets .... pay 10$ per person and munch out.... you would need three employees... one to cook, one to clean, one to let people in and seat them... soda dispensers at each table....etc...

The food doesn't cost anything its all microwaved garbage , the buns are probably 30% wood chips.

"Also, businesses all go through life-cycles, no business is meant to last forever"

Credit-fed stock corporations go through an accelerated life cycle, like a meth head. MCD's has been ruined within 25 years thanks to excessive greed fed by fraudulent fiat. They removed beef tallow, beef and everything else that made their brand superior, decades ago. What's left is a monument to Madison Avenue and the boob tube.

Anyone here old enough to remember Horn and hardart restaurants? Philly had one where you entered and along the wall was all these slots with different sandwiches and pies and other such items. You put your coins in to purchase what you wanted. That was about 40 years ago. How times have changed. Its one big circle as we return to the good ole days. So instead of having dozens of part time workers earning $9 to $10 an hour, you will have a handful of workers stuffing the machines with your Mcmuffins and fries. A Microwave will be provided if you want it heated up. LOL

Here's the new future, Horn and Hardart reenvented thanks to Obama and his liberal minons. https://www.google.com/search?q=horn+and+hardart&espv=2&biw=1280&bih=598...

I should mention they have machines now that make hamburgers and fries to order.

Divide us on whether McD is food or not... here they make it from Australian Beef, you know. Any empirical test confirms it is food. There is marginally more sugar in the bun than there needs to be. Oh, the ordering machine pictured, in Australia, also lets you customize your burger, to even remove the bun and replace it with Lettuce. Nothing wrong with the place, here. Are you guys happy that American wages haven't increased since 1980-83?

Do you oppose legislation that would mandate higher wages?

In your minds' eye/understanding of capitalism, how do workers achieve higher wages?

I think this is another area similar to debt forgiveness, austerity, and the realistic future of precious metals, where ZH has an ideology that is not quite as strong as it might appear at first glance. Recommend Michael Hudson, Martin Armstrong & Steve Keen, Paul Craig Robert's "Failure of Laissez-Faire capitalism" as the next step beyond Schiff, Hayek, and simplified understandings of 'Free Market Economics'. In case anyone's interested.

That question shows a complete absence of economic knowledge.

In your minds' eye/understanding of capitalism, how do workers achieve higher wages?

A company has two options 1) raise prices 2) increase productivity.

If a company can't pass rising labor costs on to its customers, it has to increase productivity somewhere else to lower operating costs. That's why the machines.

If a company can't pass rising costs on to its customer and it can't increase productivity, profits diminish until it goes out of business.

Well apparently, the liberal socialist engineers have decided that flooding the USA with millions upon millions of unskilled, uneducated illegal aliens will raise the minimum wages for everybody in this fair land by having 5 people compete for each MacDonald's job.

To make things even easier for all those workers looking for a "good" job for a "good" wage at MacDonalds, the liberal socialist engineers have also decided that massive spending and debt/deficits are very good things because deficit spending leads to inflation which means minimum wages will have to go up in order for some people to eat.

Liberal socialist engineers call this a virtuous cycle and they are the only ones smart enough to understand it. Only Krugman in the NYT can explain it so it makes sense to the layperson.

Meanwhile. the side that rejects guns, is screaming for the people who hvae guns to be forced to do things.

What is amazing is that even the intelligent ones seem to have no ability to rationally analyze anything in economic terms. They just spout out conflicting, inconsistent thoughts and refuse to knowledge the natural consequences of the well intended, but idiotic liberal policies.

If you really want to see their heads explode, tell them that financial aid for college has caused the tuition to rise well in excess of the inflation rates for decades and actually made college less affordable as universities did not have to keep their costs under control. Similarly, tell them that all of the housing subsidies from low-interest rates and low down payments, to mortgage interest deductions and the fed buying mortgage-backed debt has actually increased the cost of housing. Then tell them that 0% interest rates have increased wealth inequality, not decreased it.

Tell them that McDonald's and Walmart have become large companies because they met an actual need by lowering the cost of food and basic consumer items for the masses, in spite of the fact that we have had decades of federal reserve policy aimed at "helping" the masses by increasing prices and thus destroying purchasing power via inflation.

They won't understand any of it. There's a reason they're called Libtards.

In 1975 I could buy a case of Old Milwaukee for $4.19 - minimumum wage was about $2.40. Today I would have to pay $20 for a low class beer-on sale. A Texas resident could go to Univ. of Texas for $2 a semester hour or $4 at Texas A& M. Today it's over 200 times that, and while Texas residents were guranteed admission with an 800 SAT, today whilte kids can't get in at any price with less then 1300.  Minimum wage has not kept up. Rich folks have sucked up all the profits  -they have become exponentially richer, even adjusted for inflation. Bring on $15 an hour minimum wage  -take it from the predator leaches who have stolen it from speculation and fraud and exporting our manufacturing and jobs overseas.

Okay, folks... I'm not sure why I bother to keep asking this because I usually get either silent down votes or suggestions that are completely unrealistic, but I'll try anyway: what the fuck do you suggest?

You want minimalist government and no welfare... you also want low or nonexistent minimum wages. You can't have both. Sure, 50 years ago you didn't have welfare like you do today, but 50 years ago the fucking minimum wage was the inflation adjusted equivalent of $20 an hour. You could live on it. And that's the thing: if you don't want welfare, the working class has to make enough to eat.

And does anyone here really think unregulated capitalism is going to magically provide the solution? It won't. Hard cold reality: the history of the industrial revolution clearly indicates that individual laborers have NO bargaining power. Ever. You might not like unions or minimum wages, but without them the working class lives in poverty. I challenge anyone to find an exception.

This is all exacerbated by a serious population problem. We have more people than we can possibly keep busy. This eliminates any limited bargaining power labor ever had. So what do you suggest? Let 'em starve?

I'm going to leave you with a couple of paraphrase quotes from a buddy of mine who works for employment services. His job is to help people find a job. He has far more applicants than he can place, and he's said a few interesting things to me. He once told me that the big problem with the modern employer is he expects quality work and dedication for less than a third of what your grandpa would have got paid 40 years ago for the same job. Another (and my favorite) was when he was discussing an attempt to place a freshly graduated network tech with a bunch of IT companies who were complaining that they couldn't find people. He said that "we can't find people" really means "we can't find a PHD candidate with five years experience who is willing to work for a few bucks above minimum wage".

I do want a minimalist government and no welfare and no minimum wage. Does that blow your mind or what? If I had the bigger half of my income that the government takes I would be handing a nice part over to my local church to help out those in need. I would also, given my current income, have my lovely wife not work and hire both a maid and a gardner. I would go back to the time that the federal government was funded by import taxes and the states and local governments had the real power. So that's my fantasy.

I will second your concern that we as a society need to address how we feed and shelter more people than we have jobs for. The math is beyond me but my intuition says that it's the taxes and inflation (stealth tax) that is the root of the problem. Undo that and the rest may work itself out. It can't be done through redirecting money.

My Dearest,

It saddens me to see you say this. You have been a loving and supportive husband and I am so happy you chose me as your partner. I have watched for years you work incredibly long hours to support our family. It was not your fault you were unable to give us the life our parents had. There are things not in your control. Your hardwork, innovation and creative genius was not rewarded but stolen. You made others rich.

I know it was your dream to have me stay home and raise our family but we did the best we could considering the economic environment we found ourself. Your guidance kept us financially sound whereas my ideas would not have been. I am forever grateful for your vision though at the time I couldn't see.

Having a maid and gardener would be a nice luxury but really my love they aren't needed. We have managed 30 years without. Besides, doing those mundane chores as home maintenance and weed pulling are just a part of our life together. At the end of the day, looking at you gaze at me with that smile of yours, makes me content. You are good enough just as you are.

Miffed;-)

To the worker: You can be skilled and productive and earn a higher wage or you can have the literacy of an 8th grader and earn low wages, but you can't have both.

To the employer: You can raise your existing worker wages by 10% under the minimum wage law and still stay in business or you can hire 10% fewer workers, but you can't do both.

How about we start by closing the borders and eliminating things like H1Bs?  Think that'll increase demand for domestic labor?  Maybe?

Employers are always going to look for the least expensive labor.  Should your teenager have to compete with an illegal immigrant for a bagboy job?  Or for an entry level framing/drywall/siding/roofing gig...

This is the McDonalds death rattle. There hasn't been food there for decades, now there's no profits either. Soon there won't be people. It will be most streamlined form of the modern business strategy. Make shit, market heavily, ask Uncle Sam for bailout when it all comes unraveled. My wife went to visit relatives this weekend, leaving me to fend for myself.  When I got up on Saturday morning, I had 2 choices for breakfast - walk 5 minutes to the local diner or make breakfast myself.

In 10 minutes, I rustled up 3 eggs easy over, toast, coffee and some Canadian bacon. Ate breakfast, cleaned up and started my day.

For me, it beyond comprehension why people don't cook their own food and pack and bring a lunch box to work.  At least you know what you are eating and not getting ripped off at the cash register.

Basically if a person can't cook up healthy dishes quickly he is doomed, both from a health and financial perspective.

Restaurants bum me out. I have read so many "what is the right tip for bad service" articles lately and they say that a server is "due" a tip even for bad service.

Rather than partake in the debate, smart people who prefer not to give a monetary reward to lousy service, bypass the whole thing and eat at home, thus saving $ and hassle.
We therefore remove ourselves from the debate and save a lot of $.

Financial wisdom is the most under-rated of all human attributes.

Force down wages = More profit

Force down wages = fewer $$ to purchase product -> lower profit

Force up wages = increased automation -> fewer jobs -> fewer $$ to purchase products -> lower profit

Force up wages = more $$ to purchase products -> more profit

Ultimately, there is little benefit for one company to increase wages, they will lose while cheaper wage companies win. Ultimately, we all lose, the rich just lose slower.

This minimum wage shit is like arguing red team vs blue team. 4.5 trillion dollars created out of thin air is equal to 20,000,000 $50,000 a year jobs for 4.5 years. Think about that for a second and tell me about the injustices of having to pay someone $15 an hour.

Uh...,really? the value of currency is equal to the value of goods in the markeplace. When there is more money than goods, value of money goes down, or goods go up, either way...same thing.. Your fake $50k will soon be worth the same as what you get today. The price of goods will go up commensurately negating your "pay raise". Dumbass. It is idiots like you who think the central planners will take care of you. Go out and make your own wealth and stop demanding it from someone else, otherwise, like your income you have now or suckit.

Tue, 09/08/2015 - 11:01 | 6522447 nakki
nakki's picture

You miss my point, I have no delusions of central planners taking care of me. They will take care of themselves. Fact is they did print money from nothing? Did the very small minority reap the rewards of said fake money printing? Has misallocation of that money actually contracted the economy? Has all this money printing actually slowed innovation? Banks own the printing press, the politicians, and pretty much all corporations. They have reaped the rewards while the mass majority has seen there net worth drop.

I understand that Everyone can be replaced!! The point is they did creat 4.5 trillion dollars, 20 gazillion yen, 30 trillion yuan, 4 trillion euros and trillions of other fiat currencies out of nothing. The money has already been debased, because of that purchasing power has already been reduced.

The argument about minimum wage to me is like the local "news" talking about some dumb fuck stealing $400 worth of shit from Walmart. In the mean time  Wall St. and the banks have stolen trillions, and yet no prosecution for those people because "we might lose faith in the system."

Simply putting a number on it 20 million $50k (average family income) jobs for 4.5 years just shows how much fiat was created and diverted to the people that needed it the least.

A long time ago, I started as a cable TV technician, at minimum wage, then $3.35 per hour. I worked my ass off all summer, digging ditches, climginb ladders, and pulling wire in hellish attics.

I was made a 'lead tech' and given a raise to $4.50 per hour. I was very proud of my accomplishment and my higher wage was tangible proof. Fast forward a while and the minimum gets raised to $4.25 per hour.

All the sudden those flunkies under me were earning nearly what I was earning. And it took me time and effort to get that extra $1.15 per hour. But these guys get that $1 just because.

What that did was devalue my effort and my higher pay.  Now I was their supervisor making only 25¢ an hour more than them.  Did my pay suddenly go up to $5.65 to compensate for this min wage increase? No it did not.

But what did happen was the cost of most things I consumed to surivive also went up.

That's one side of the min wage argument not many people think about.

You do understand that businesses also compete for laborers based on oh I don't know ..... The amount of skill and experience they have? Flipping burgers was never supposed to be considered a Living wage career. The more valuable you are to society the more money you should earn because you worked hard to get to that position. Careers like burger-flipping are low skill level jobs. Minimum wage hurts everyone in the end. Businesses are forced to compensate either through layoffs, automation replacement, or price hikes. What are you going to do when a business lays off 50 people because of government wage controls? Pass new regulations limiting the number of layoffs a business can do? Eventually the business and its owner also suffers anway because now there is less disposable income to be spent in the entire economy.

Why would anyone want to remain a burger flipper, or have we lost all ambition to improve ourselves at this point?

You know with every "dollar" the POLS and union elites get they get a nice chunk in higher taxes and union "dues", right?  Or is all that pious "profit taking"?  And the worker gets what, about .60 cents maybe while the employer paid what, probably a $1.30 or so with the added payroll taxes and such?  How exactly can getting that "raise" not cause the prices to go up and the cost of capital used to replace those least productive workers to go down (the automation)?  This isn't even complicated stuff...you just don't want to consider it at all.

If you want workers to have more money in their pocket, why not push to lower taxes on them instead.  Why don't you call for price controls in their energy and food and housing costs instead?  Wouldn't it seem to result in the same desired outcome?  Or does fixing the minimum price of labor work while fixing the maximum price of goods does not?  Neither do of course because of the way economics has to work.

And just stop with the guessing on how horrible our existence would be "without unions".  You can't differentiate the union movement from a century ago to the one that exists WITHIN the corporatist system today huh?  No difference at all to you?  Nothing?  Get that weak shit outahere!
