This post explains the liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights – the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution – and provides a scorecard on the extent of the loss of each right.
First Amendment
The 1st Amendment protects speech, religion, assembly and the press:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The Supreme Court has also interpreted the First Amendment as protecting freedom of association.
However, the government is arresting those speaking out … and violently crushing peaceful assemblies which attempt to petition the government for redress.
A federal judge found that the law allowing indefinite detention of Americans without due process has a “chilling effect” on free speech. And see this and this.
There are also enacted laws allowing the secret service to arrest anyone protesting near the president or other designated folks (that might explain incidents like this).
Mass spying by the NSA violates our freedom of association.
The threat of being labeled a terrorist for exercising our First Amendment rights certainly violates the First Amendment. The government is using laws to crush dissent, and it’s gotten so bad that even U.S. Supreme Court justices are saying that we are descending into tyranny. (And the U.S. is doing the same things that tyrannical governments have done for 5,000 years to crush dissent.)
For example, the following actions may get an American citizen living on U.S. soil labeled as a “suspected terrorist” today:
- Taking any steps to protect your privacy (and see this)
- Complaining about the taste of your tap water
- Being young (if you live near a battle zone, you are fair game; and see this)
- Reporting or doing journalism (and here and here)
- Having “strange odors” or “bright colored stains on clothes” (what if you eat mustard or ketchup?)
- Protesting anything (such as participating in the “Occupy” or “Tea Party” movements). For example, Department of Defense training manuals classify all protest as “low-level terrorism”. And see this, this, this and this
- Questioning war (even though war reduces our national security; and see this)
- Criticizing the government’s targeting of innocent civilians with drones (although killing innocent civilians with drones is one of the main things which increases terrorism. And see this)
- Stocking up on more than 7 days of food (even though all Mormons are taught to stockpile food, and most Hawaiians store up on extra food)
- (Not having a Facebook account may soon be added)
And holding the following beliefs may also be considered grounds for suspected terrorism:
- Liking the Founding Fathers
- Being a Christian
- Being “anti-nuclear”
- Being “anti-abortion”
- Being “anti-Catholic”
- Being “anti-global”

And 1st Amendment rights are especially chilled when power has become so concentrated that the same agency which spies on all Americans also decides who should be assassinated.
Despite the clear protections found in the First Amendment, the freedoms described therein are under constant assault. Increasingly, Americans are being arrested and charged with bogus “contempt of cop” charges such as “disrupting the peace” or “resisting arrest” for daring to film police officers engaged in harassment or abusive practices. Journalists are being prosecuted for reporting on whistleblowers. States are passing legislation to muzzle reporting on cruel and abusive corporate practices. Religious ministries are being fined for attempting to feed and house the homeless. Protesters are being tear-gassed, beaten, arrested and forced into “free speech zones.” And under the guise of “government speech,” the courts have reasoned that the government can discriminate freely against any First Amendment activity that takes place within a government forum.
Second Amendment
The 2nd Amendment states:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Gun control and gun rights advocates obviously have very different views about whether guns are a force for violence or for good.
But even a top liberal Constitutional law expert reluctantly admits that the right to own a gun is as important a Constitutional right as freedom of speech or religion:
Like many academics, I was happy to blissfully ignore the Second Amendment. It did not fit neatly into my socially liberal agenda.

It is hard to read the Second Amendment and not honestly conclude that the Framers intended gun ownership to be an individual right. It is true that the amendment begins with a reference to militias: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Accordingly, it is argued, this amendment protects the right of the militia to bear arms, not the individual.
Yet, if true, the Second Amendment would be effectively declared a defunct provision. The National Guard is not a true militia in the sense of the Second Amendment and, since the District and others believe governments can ban guns entirely, the Second Amendment would be read out of existence.

More important, the mere reference to a purpose of the Second Amendment does not alter the fact that an individual right is created. The right of the people to keep and bear arms is stated in the same way as the right to free speech or free press. The statement of a purpose was intended to reaffirm the power of the states and the people against the central government. At the time, many feared the federal government and its national army. Gun ownership was viewed as a deterrent against abuse by the government, which would be less likely to mess with a well-armed populace.
Considering the Framers and their own traditions of hunting and self-defense, it is clear that they would have viewed such ownership as an individual right — consistent with the plain meaning of the amendment.
None of this is easy for someone raised to believe that the Second Amendment was the dividing line between the enlightenment and the dark ages of American culture. Yet, it is time to honestly reconsider this amendment and admit that … here’s the really hard part … the NRA may have been right. This does not mean that Charlton Heston is the new Rosa Parks or that no restrictions can be placed on gun ownership. But it does appear that gun ownership was made a protected right by the Framers and, while we might not celebrate it, it is time that we recognize it.
The gun control debate – including which weapons and magazines are banned – is still in flux …
Americans remain powerless to defend themselves against SWAT team raids and government agents armed to the teeth with military weapons better suited for the battlefield than for a country founded on freedom. Police shootings of unarmed citizens continue to outrage communities, while little is really being done to demilitarize law enforcement agencies. Indeed, just recently, North Dakota became the first state to legalize law enforcement use of drones armed with weapons such as tear gas, rubber bullets, beanbags, pepper spray and Tasers.
Third Amendment
The 3rd Amendment prohibits the government forcing people to house soldiers:
No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
A recent lawsuit by a Nevada family – covered by (Mother Jones, Fox News and Courthouse News – alleges violation of the Third Amendment.
Moreover, the military is arguably quartering “digital” troops within our homes.
With the police increasingly training like the military, acting like the military, and posing as military forces—complete with military weapons, assault vehicles, etc.—it is clear that we now have what the founders feared most—a standing army on American soil. Moreover, as a result of SWAT team raids (more than 80,000 a year) where police invade homes, often without warrants, and injure and even kill unarmed citizens, the barrier between public and private property has been done away with, leaving us with armed government agents who act as if they own our property.
Fourth Amendment
The 4th Amendment prevents unlawful search and seizure:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
But the government is spying on everything we do … without any real benefit or justification.
Indeed, experts say that the type of spying being carried out by the NSA and other agencies is exactly the kind of thing which King George imposed on the American colonists … which led to the Revolutionary War.
And many Constitutional experts – such as Jonathan Turley – think that the police went too far in Boston with lockdowns and involuntary door-to-door searches.
The Fourth Amendment has suffered the greatest damage in recent years and been all but eviscerated by an unwarranted expansion of police powers that include strip searches and even anal and vaginal searches of citizens, surveillance and intrusions justified in the name of fighting terrorism, as well as the outsourcing of otherwise illegal activities to private contractors. Case in point: Texas police forced a 21-year-old woman to undergo a warrantless vaginal search by the side of the road after she allegedly “rolled” through a stop sign.
The use of civil asset forfeiture schemes to swell the coffers of police forces has also continued to grow in popularity among cash-strapped states. The federal government continues to strong-arm corporations into providing it with access to Americans’ private affairs, from emails and online transactions to banking and web surfing. Coming in the wake of massive leaks about the inner workings of the NSA and the massive secretive surveillance state, it was revealed that the government threatened to fine Yahoo $250,000 every day for failing to comply with the NSA’s mass data collection program known as PRISM. Meanwhile, AT&T has enjoyed a profitable and “extraordinary, decades-long” relationship with the NSA.
The technological future appears to pose even greater threats to what’s left of our Fourth Amendment rights, with advances in biometric identification and microchip implants on the horizon making it that much easier for the government to track not only our movements and cyber activities but our very cellular beings. Barclays has already begun using a finger-scanner as a form of two-step authentication to give select customers access to their accounts. Similarly, Motorola has been developing thin “digital tattoos” that will ensure that a phone’s owner is the only person who may unlock it. Not to be overlooked are the aerial spies—surveillance drones—about to take to the skies in coming years, as well as the Drive Smart programs that will spy on you (your speed, movements, passengers, etc.) while you travel the nation’s highways and byways.
Fifth Amendment
The 5th Amendment addresses due process of law, eminent domain, double jeopardy and grand jury:
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
But the American government has shredded the 5th Amendment by subjecting us to indefinite detention and taking away our due process rights.
The government claims the right to assassinate or indefinitely detain any American citizen on U.S. citizen without any due process. And see this.
For example, American citizens are being detained in Guantanamo-like conditions in Chicago … including:
- Brutality
- Being held in secret
- Not even telling a suspect’s lawyer whether his client is being held?
As such, the government is certainly depriving people of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.
There are additional corruptions of 5th Amendment rights – such as property being taken for private purposes. And the right to remain silent is gone.
The percentage of prosecutions in which a defendant is denied a grand jury is difficult to gauge, as there is so much secrecy surrounding many terrorism trials.

Sixth Amendment
The 6th Amendment guarantees the right to a speedy ad public trial, by an impartial jury in the location where the crime allegedly occurred, to hear the criminal charges levied against us and to be able to confront the witnesses who have testified against us, as well as speedy criminal trials, and a public defender for those who cannot hire an attorney:
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
Subjecting people to indefinite detention or assassination obviously violates the 6th Amendment right to a speedy and public jury trial. In both cases, the defendants is “disposed of” without ever receiving any trial at all … let alone a speedy or public one. In neither case do they get a jury, a defense lawyer, or the right to call their own witnesses. And they often never even hear the charges against them.
Indefinite detentions usually don’t occur where the alleged crime occurred, but at a black site.
More and more commonly, the government prosecutes cases based upon “secret evidence” that they don’t show to the defendant … or sometimes even the judge hearing the case.
The government uses “secret evidence” to spy on Americans, prosecute leaking or terrorism charges (even against U.S. soldiers) and even assassinate people. And see this and this.
Secret witnesses are being used in some cases. And sometimes lawyers are not even allowed to read their own briefs.
Indeed, even the laws themselves are now starting to be kept secret. And it’s about to get a lot worse.
Moreover, government is “laundering” information gained through mass surveillance through other agencies, with an agreement that the agencies will “recreate” the evidence in a “parallel construction” … so they don’t have to admit that the evidence came from unconstitutional spying. A former top NSA official says that this is the opposite of following the Fourth Amendment, but is a “totalitarian process” which shows that we’re in a “police state”.
And there are two systems of justice in America … one for the big banks and other fatcats, and one for everyone else. The government made it official policy not to prosecute fraud, even though fraud is the main business model adopted by Wall Street. Indeed, the biggest financial crime in world history, the largest insider trading scandal of all time, illegal raiding of customer accounts and blatant financing of drug cartels and terrorists have all been committed recently without any real criminal prosecution or jail time.
On the other hand, government prosecutors are using the legal system to crush dissent and to silence whistleblowers.
And some of the nation’s most powerful judges have lost their independence … and are in bed with the powers-that-be.
Constitutional lawyer John Whitehead explains:
The Fifth Amendment and the Sixth Amendment work in tandem. These amendments supposedly ensure that you are innocent until proven guilty, and government authorities cannot deprive you of your life, your liberty or your property without the right to an attorney and a fair trial before a civilian judge. However, in the new suspect society in which we live, where surveillance is the norm, these fundamental principles have been upended. Certainly, if the government can arbitrarily freeze, seize or lay claim to your property (money, land or possessions) under government asset forfeiture schemes, you have no true rights. That’s the crux of a case before the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the government’s use of asset forfeiture to strip American citizens of the funds needed to hire a defense attorney of their choosing.
Seventh Amendment
The 7th Amendment guarantees trial by jury in federal court for civil cases:
In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.
But there are two systems of justice in America … one for the big banks and other fatcats, and one for everyone else. So good luck going after the powers-that-be.
And the World Justice Project – a bipartisan, independent group with honorary chairs including numerous current and former Supreme Court Justices – released a report saying that Americans have less access to justice than most wealthy countries … and many developing nations. The report finds that Americans have less access to justice than Botswanans, and that only the wealthy have the resources to protect rights using the court system:
For example, Germans sue equally whether they are rich or poor … but in America, only the wealthy have the resources to protect rights using the court system:
(And the austerity caused by the highest levels of inequality in world history – which are in turn is caused by socialist actions by our government, which have destroyed the Founding Fathers’ vision of prosperity – is causing severe budget cuts to the courts, resulting in the wheels of justice slowing down considerably.)
Federal judges have also recently decided that they can pre-judge cases before the plaintiff even has the chance to conduct discovery … and throw cases out if they don’t like plaintiff’s case.
And:
The populace has no idea of what’s in the Constitution—civic education has virtually disappeared from most school curriculums—that inevitably translates to an ignorant jury incapable of distinguishing justice and the law from their own preconceived notions and fears. However, as a growing number of citizens are coming to realize, the power of the jury to nullify the government’s actions—and thereby help balance the scales of justice—is not to be underestimated. Jury nullification reminds the government that it’s “we the people” who can and should be determining what laws are just, what activities are criminal and who can be jailed for what crimes.
Eighth Amendment
The 8th Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment:
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
Indefinite detention and assassination are obviously cruel and unusual punishment.
The widespread system of torture carried out in the last 10 years – with the help of other countries – violates the 8th Amendment. Many want to bring it back … or at least justify its past use.
While Justice Scalia disingenuously argues that torture does not constitute cruel and unusual punishment because it is meant to produce information – not punish – he’s wrong. It’s not only cruel and unusual … it is technically a form of terrorism.
And government whistleblowers are being cruelly and unusually punished with unduly harsh sentences meant to intimidate anyone else from speaking out.
A California appeals court is being asked to consider “whether years of unpredictable delays from conviction to execution” constitute cruel and unusual punishment. For instance, although 900 individuals have been sentenced to death in California since 1978, only 13 have been executed. As CBS News reports, “More prisoners have died of natural causes on death row than have perished in the death chamber.”

Ninth Amendment
The 9th Amendment provides that people have other rights, even if they aren’t specifically listed in the Constitution:
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
We can debate what our inherent rights as human beings are. I believe they include the right to a level playing field, and access to non-toxic food and water. You may disagree.
But everyone agrees that the government should not actively encourage fraud and manipulation. However, the government – through its malignant, symbiotic relation with big corporations – is interfering with our aspirations for economic freedom, safe food and water (instead of arsenic-laden, genetically engineered junk), freedom from undue health hazards such as irradiation due to government support of archaic nuclear power designs, and a level playing field (as opposed to our crony capitalist system in which the little guy has no shot due to redistribution of wealth from the middle class to the super-elite, and government support of white collar criminals).
By working hand-in-glove with giant corporations to defraud us into paying for a lower quality of life, the government is trampling our basic rights as human beings.
Tenth Amendment
The 10th Amendment provides that powers not specifically given to the Federal government are reserved to the states or individual:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
Two of the central principles of America’s Founding Fathers are:
(1) The government is created and empowered with the consent of the people
and
(2) Separation of powers
Today, most Americans believe that the government is threatening – rather than protecting – freedom. We’ve become more afraid of our government than of terrorists, and believe that the government is no longer acting with the “consent of the governed“.
And the federal government is trampling the separation of powers by stepping on the toes of the states and the people. For example, former head S&L prosecutor Bill Black – now a professor of law and economics – notes:
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the resident examiners and regional staff of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency [both] competed to weaken federal regulation and aggressively used the preemption doctrine to try to prevent state investigations of and actions against fraudulent mortgage lenders.
Indeed, the federal government is doing everything it can to stick its nose into every aspect of our lives … and act like Big Brother.
Conclusion: While a few of the liberties enshrined in the Bill of Rights still exist, the vast majority are under heavy assault.
Other Constitutional Provisions … and The Declaration of Independence
In addition to the trampling of the Bill of Rights, the government has also trashed the separation of powers enshrined in the main body of the Constitution.
The government is also engaging in activities which the Founding Fathers fought against, such as taxation without representation (here and here), cronyism, deference to central banks, etc.
As the preamble to the Declaration of Independence shows, the American government is still carrying out many of the acts the Founding Fathers found most offensive:
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. [Background here and here]
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power. [Background here, here, here, here and here]

You are right about all of this. It's frustrating not being able to do anything about it. I was at a loss when the Republicans blacked balled Ron Paul. I think he might have been our last hope to do anything meaningful to change course in the country. I think now it's all about damage control or life after the ashes.

THE END TIMES AND THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS
BIBLE NONSENSE NUMBER 1
I decided to begin this book with what appears to be the most pressing matter for most Christians - the end times and the Second Coming of Jesus. Almost every Bible believing Christian expects this event could happen at any moment. For all of my years as a ‘born again’ Christian - this subject was a major part of the Christian teaching cycle. If you ask a Christian today ‘when do you believe Jesus will come again?’ the answer will no doubt be ‘Jesus could come again at any time – no one knows when that time will be – only God knows but we believe it will be soon!’
The problem is that so called ‘believers’ have been expecting Jesus to return again since a very few days or years after his alleged resurrection. I am now amazed that there has ever been any controversy concerning this issue, as according to the Bible, Jesus made it very clear that he would return within the lifetime of those who were living at the time!
Here are the words of Jesus according to the gospels of Matthew, Luke and Mark – He was telling those standing there that he would return in their lifetime!
Matthew 16:28
Verily I say unto you, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the son of man coming in his kingdom.
Luke 9:27
But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Kingdom of God
Mark 9:1
And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdon of God come with power.
Clearly in all the above verses Jesus was talking to the people standing there, he was not prophesying for future generations, as Christians are usually taught. In the next verse he told his disciples they would not finish preaching in the towns of Israel before he returned. Again he was not speaking to future generations.
Matthew 10:23
But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
Then in Matthew 24:2
Jesus had been preaching to a large crowd and his disciples inside the Temple and as he left with his disciples he made this alarming remark about the Temple:
See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
They then walked together to the Mount of Olives where Jesus sat down and the disciples gathered around him. Obviously they were shocked that Jesus had said that there would be a time when the Temple would be completely destroyed!
His disciples began to ask questions:

And as he sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, take heed that no man deceive you, For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Jesus then began a detailed account of the events that would take place and warned them about false prophets who would come and claim they were Christ. He then listed a series of events which would happen before his return.
Matthew 24:6-28
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then they shall deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And the gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day: For then shall be the great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you lo, here is Christ, or there; believe not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; inasmuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
Jesus was speaking directly to those of the time, especially those in Judea, where he was at that time. He relentlessly referred to them throughout the entire discourse and gave no indication he was prophesying to a future generation some 2,000+ years ahead.

Mark and Luke also reported the words of Jesus and that he was speaking directly to those who were listening to him at that time;

It has been suggested by some Christian commentators that the original Greek word for ‘generation’ genea should be translated as ‘race’ or ‘age’ but the word genea is used in many places in the Bible clearly meaning ‘generation’ eg: Matthew 11:16 – Luke 7:31 whereas the Greek word for ‘race’ genos meaning ‘race’ is used also in many places eg: Acts 7:19 & 17:28 – Galatians 1:14 – Philippians 3:5
Why are Christians still expecting Jesus to return again at any moment – now some 2,000 years after he allegedly spoke those words? Was he simply playing games? - Was he lying to those who were ‘standing there?’
In an attempt to explain what Jesus meant by the above verses, Christian preterists*1 as early as the 17thcentury believed that all the end-times prophesies including the second coming of Jesus in the New Testament were fulfilled when the Romans attacked and destroyed Jerusalem including the Temple in 70CE. They suggest that Jesus’ predictions were all fulfilled and therefore he did not fail. According to their hypothesis all that Jesus prophesied happened right on schedule.
Then we have the words of others also to consider:
The Apostles and writers of the New Testament believed Jesus was returning in their lifetime.
Paul was declaring to the believers in Philippi that: – The Lord is at hand - Surely he was encouraging them to believe that the return of Jesus was imminent.
He was writing to the Christians living at the time at Philippi, Not to us!

Paul, believed to be the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews, wrote these words to the Hebrews concerning - these last days

And then in Chapter 10 Paul wrote: For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. If Paul thought Jesus was returning at some time 2,000+ years in the future, surely he would not have said: – and will not tarry!

For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
Paul also wrote to the Church at Thessalonica expecting the Lord to return in their lifetime: we which are alive

And again – that the day of Christ is at hand
2 Thessalonians 2:1-2

The Apostle Peter believed he was living in the last days as he wrote an Epistle to Christians living in his time - In these last times - and again - But the end of all things is at hand.
1 Peter 1:20
Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
Another excuse offered by Christians is that time as far as God is concerned can mean that a day could be a thousand years.

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as [they were] from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgement and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day [is] with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therin shall be burned up.
Peter was warning the Christians about ‘scoffers’ who would question why Jesus had not returned so far and gave them this line to use as their excuse. We should also remember that he had already told them that Jesus was virtually about to arrive. The idea that a thousand years could represent one day could not possibly suggest that this was a short time – remember these people living 2,000 years ago believed the world was only 4,000 years old at that time. Additionally, if we are to assume that in God’s time 1 x 24 hour day = 1,000 years - to which passages of scripture do these criteria apply? Should we therefore assume that the nine hours of Jesus’ crucifixion were really 375 years? Were God’s six days for the creation actually a metaphor for 6,000 years? Jesus actually confirmed that a day (or daytime) is 12 hours:
John 11:9
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world
James wrote to the Twelve Tribes of Israel encouraging them to be patient and wait for the coming of the Lord. He was not giving these instructions to us who are living 2,000+ years later. - Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.
James 1:1
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
James 5:6-9
Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
Surely, on the evidence of the writers of the New Testament, it should be obvious to everyone that Jesus said he would return in the lifetime of those who were with him at the time! His disciples all believed that Jesus would return SOON and before they had died. I believe we should therefore conclude that there is absolutely no justification for Christians to apply his promise to return to a future generation some 2,000 or more years later.
So – was Jesus playing games with his followers or deliberately deceiving them? I am convinced that if the words of Jesus as reported in the Bible were true, then he said those things sincerely believing them to be true and that he absolutely believed that he was the ‘Son of God’ and would return to earth in glory at some future date but within the lifetime of those who were with him at the time.
This brings me to the conclusion that he was simply just one of hundreds of similar so-called prophets who were also convinced or deluded in thinking they were the Son of God, God, Messiah, angel, guru, divine being or whatever.
Why do present-day Christians still believe that the second coming of Jesus and that the end of the world will take place sometime soon? At no time did Jesus say or suggest that these events would happen at any time other than within the lives of the generation who were living on the earth at that time.
The answer may be found within the words Jesus is supposed to have said according to:
Matthew 24:15-16
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place,(whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
These words again were directed entirely at the people of that generation and in particular those living in Judea. Later, as Christians discovered that Jesus did not return during the lifetime of that generation, rather than admit that Jesus was in fact a false prophet they looked for other explanations.
Possibly, they thought, Jesus had left them with an escape route should he fail to turn up at that time as he had said. Maybe, they surmised that Daniel’s prophecy was for some future time long after Jesus had been crucified and after that generation had all died? This then provided those early Christians the means to explain and to continue with the faith rather than admit that they had been deceived.
The Apostle John wrote a ‘prophesy’ to the seven churches in Asia – this manuscript being known as Revelation – it is also the last book in the New Testament. Here again, those early Christians may have seen that John’s prophecy also provided some suggestion that the return of Jesus and the end time events could be sometime in the future. BUT– how long in the future? 2,000+ years?
I will not bore you with a commentary on the entire book of Revelation or attempt to explain it as there are numerous and varied explanations or theories available in books and websites. Basically, there are four interpretations of the Revelation - (1) Historicist, which sees in Revelation a broad view of history (2) Preterist, in which Revelation mostly refers to the events of the apostolic era (1st century); (3) Futurist, which holds that Revelation describes future events; and (4) Idealist or Symbolic, which holds that Revelation does not refer to actual people or events, but is an allergory of the spiritual path and the ongoing struggle between good and evil.
As you can see – you can take your pick and explain the Revelation according to your personal views or pre-conceived beliefs or previously indoctrinated thoughts and opinions about the book.
Other notable critics of Revelation include: Thomas Jefferson*2 who omitted it, along with most of the Biblical canon, from the ‘Jefferson Bible’ and wrote that at one time he considered it: as merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherences of our own nightly dreams.
The Nineteenth-century agnostic Robert G.Ingersoll*3 called Revelation - the insanest of all books. Friedrich Engels claimed that the Book of Revelation was primarily a political and anti-Roman work, while, George Bernard Shaw described it as - a peculiar record of the visions of a drug addict.
Martin Luther*4 changed his perspective on Revelation over time. In the preface to the German translation of Revelation that he composed in 1522, he said that he did not consider the book prophetic or apostolic, since Christ is neither taught nor known in it. But in the completely new preface he composed in 1530, he reversed his position and concluded that Christ was central to the book. He concluded; As we see here in this book, that through and beyond all plagues, beasts, and evil angels, Christ is nonetheless with the saints and wins the final victory.
Perhaps the best explanation of the book of Revelation and other so-called prophecies or revelations is that they are most likely to be the result of hallucinations, imaginations, so-called visions or night visions or at best a series of dreams or nightmares! Unfortunately they are readily accepted by believers to be genuine prophecies of the events of the end times, especially as there is a clear link between the prophecies of Daniel Chapter Seven and Matthew Chapter Twenty Four and the book of Revelation. The three accounts all include similar descriptions of the time of tribulation, the appearance of the ‘Beast’ – the Anti Christ - and finally the return of Jesus or the son of man. Other parts of the Revelation are borrowed from Old Testament Prophets Isaiah, Ezekiel and Ezra
The Book of Revelation, that last book in the New Testament, includes a vivid and terrifying account of the final conflict between God and the beast during the time of tribulation. Most Christians believe they will escape this as they will be ‘raptured’ – taken up to meet Jesus in the sky prior to the time of desolation. Finally Jesus and his angels and Christians will return to earth for him to reign as the ‘King of Kings and Lord of Lords!’ But was it in fact simply a message of a warning and reassurance for the seven churches of Asia? If so, then again this Revelation is not for some remote future period of time.

During the FDR Administration (Franklin Delano Roosevelt, he gave us the New Deal, which has been steadily dismantled by Carter, Reagan, the two Bushes, the Clintons and Obama) the question of ownership, or more specifically, the concentration of ownership, arose and President Roosevelt pushed the US Congress to investigate it, and thus was TNEC, or the Temporary National Economic Committee*, born.
The outcome of the TNEC investigation was that seventeen Wall Street firms essentially owned and controlled the majority of corporations in America (this would have been in the 1940s).
President Roosevelt’s last action in office, shortly before his death, was to give the go-ahead to the Department of Justice to file a lawsuit against the “Wall Street 17” --- United States vs. Morgan et al.**
This lawsuit alleged a criminal conspiracy dating back to 1914, the year the 1913 legislation was enacted concerning the establishment of the Federal Reserve System and the financial structure of foundations.***
Unfortunately, this lawsuit was quashed during the Eisenhower Administration, and no further interest was shown until the arrival into the White House of John F. Kennedy. Four major investment firms are the majority shareholders in the majority of major corporations in North America and Europe. Congressman Wright Patman, chairman of the House Banking and Currency Committee, proved in 1967 Hearings that 14 Rockefeller foundations held assets of more than $1 billion in Standard Oil stock. Not only did they pay no tax on this stock, but it gave them permanent control over the family owned firm. Rival financiers could not buy control of Standard Oil because its stock was insulated by foundation ownership. As Patman pointed out, the fact that the Rockefellers escaped paying huge sums in taxes gave them an unsurpassed market advantage over other firms which had to pay normal rates of taxation. The agitation for increased "corporate taxation" adds to Rockefeller's advantage. Patman said, "The Foundations are the best investments the Rockefeller family could have made."
A family member, Senator Nelson Aldrich, shepherded the General Education Board charter through Congress. The Rockefeller Foundation charter proved more difficult. It was a flagrant effort to evade government decrees against the Standard Oil monopoly, but was finally pushed through in 1913 by Sen. Robert F. Wagner of N.Y., setting aside $50 million in Standard Oil of New Jersey stock for "charitable work". The Rockefeller Foundation charter was signed on May 22, 1913.
