Caught On Tape: Donald Trump Asked About Libertarianism

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

*Note: This post originally maintained Trump was saying “be careful” to Nick Gillespie, when in reality he seems to have been talking to others walking with him in the crowd with equipment. The post has been changed to reflect this realization.

Reason’s editor in chief Nick Gillespie recently caught up with Donald Trump on the campaign trail and asked him about libertarianism. This is what ensued:

This exchange is troubling from several different angles.

First off, Trump does his typical dance in which he avoids questions he doesn’t want to answer by giving a simplistic jingoistic response.

He is clearly uncomfortable with the question. Why?

Overall, the above exchange is kind of unnecessary since it’s abundantly clear Trump is anti-liberty and anti-freedom.

Let’s recall what he said should be done with Edward Snowden. From a Washington Times story in 2013:

Edward Snowden, the man at the heart of the NSA information leaks, is nothing but a “traitor” — and America ought to recreate history in dealing with him, real estate mogul Donald Trump said on a “Fox & Friends” interview.

In other words, execute him, Mr. Trump implied.

“I think Snowden is a terrible threat, I think he’s a terrible traitor, and you know what we used to do in the good old days when we were a strong country — you know what we used to do to traitors, right?”

So, I guess that Krieger is saying that most of the other candidates would say that Snowden is a hero? Why not tell us what they all say?

And the other candidates might excoriate libertarianism? Give me a break! Who bought you off?

He was saying be careful as he negotiated a crowd with someone in his face with a microphone univited.  Really moronic to use this video to make a point about anything other that what not to do as a reporter.

Totally agree.  I'm not much of Trump fan but this story is a nothing burger.

Speaking of Libertarianism I'm still hoping Gary Johnson runs.

Come on, that dismissive, "A lot of good things, a lot of good things, I don't want to talk about it now," is pure political bullshit to which Trump supposedly stands in contrast.

The man could not come up with one quick line about the benefits of individual liberty off the top of his head? Of course he's got something else entirely on the top of his head and he hasn't explained what that is either.

Name one thing Trump has ever done for "the people".  Right, zero record of public service.  Named "Least Charitable Billionaire".  Everything he does is to stroke his big fat ego.  It's nice to think that electing Trump would be a big middle finger to the establishment, but the reality is that he's already making deals with the establishment, otherwise he would run as a third party.

Let me know when you find those people. Maybe round them up at WalMart. The reason our government's treat their people like sheep is because that is the way they behave in total. Those truly paying attention are few in deed and those are the few that can live in your world. Lenin and Stalin understood this and sought to convert or eliminate those who did not conform through tyrannical dictatorship with the belief, much like yours, that at some point "the people" could and would be able to rule themselves. Of course it all depended on the absolute commitment to the State over ALL individual prerogatives. And as we know, the experiment failed completely with the powers of the State only growing and become more oppressive to compensate for its failure....just as we are ourselves today.

Study history and see that many many people were assassinated between Lincoln and Mckinley and they were virtually ALL anarchists doing the killing. We have seen freedom progress marvelously since then. The dream of a leaderless state has been the ideological destroyer of nations forever, and every success has been replaced with something far worse.

A firm grasp of history would remind us of how many have died for this dream...that has never been sustained. But we are now exceptional as we have smart phones .

there are none so blind as those who mistakenly think someone honest counts their vote.

and of course leaderles state is the only alternative you can imagine. a tightly bound state was intended and manifest 200 years ago, but we had to fuck it up by voting for liars whose quid pro quo was "more power to me, more empty promises to you".

but no, really, just keep imagining doing the same thing will have a better result, you self important sheep-of-the-voting-flock...

And there is no one more defeated than those who believe that everything is a conspiracy against THEM. A self admission of defeat. All that is left is to burn it all to the ground, right? Perfect.

Absolutely, I thought he was caught dropping a clanger, but instead we have a guy saying he doesn't want to talk about something multiple times before getting a trifle annoyed at someone for ignoring them.

The big news I think is the bit about refugees from him, that seems out of character with his recent message about putting Americans first and just shameless pandering to the media on the issue of the day - pricisely what the other candidates do all the time, this on the other hand is a total non story.

Secondly, when Nick asks him to name one thing he likes about libertarianism, the Donald seemingly responds with “be careful.” Trump comes across like the thug he is.

When he responded with "be careful" he was obviously talking about the people that were trampling all over each other like idiots. His comments about Snowden are depressing and exclude him from being POTUS in my opinion. However, this is a rare  terrible article submitted on zerohedge.

I'm no Trump supporter, but let's get the facts right.

This wasn't a Q&A, he's walking through a crowd and doesn't want to get into a discussion about anything.  He says there are "a lot of good things" about libertarianism.  Then you can hear his security behind him say "watch out for that tripod", and then Trump says "be careful" - it wasn't a threat to the reporter.

It diminishes your argument when you stretch for something inflamatory. There's plenty of ammo if you want to disparage Trump, you don't have to make it up.

So you want government to control prices? I can see the upside in that. For the cronies. Me? I'll just have to pay more. And business will have less incentive to get more efficient.

If people are too stupid to protect themselves then there could be a case for protectionism. If we want to burn it to the ground by buying cheap foreign goods that we can only pay for with more debt, so be it. But at least quit blaming business which is ultimately only giving us what we ask for.

Go to Best Buy and DEMAND that they provide an American made TV for your purchase. If enough ask for it I promise you that they will provide it.

While I don't generally support government intervention in much of anything, but their constitutional mandates grant them this power far beyond the vast majority of the liberties they assume. Protectionist tariffs do not set prices, they simply add tariff to those imports that are priced below competitive American prices.

From the late 1800's to early in the 1900's, our government was almost completely funded by these protectionist tariffs and we had no business or payroll taxes. Today we tax our business at the highest rate in the world and tax every part of our productive assets AND labor, while foreign companies import without any of these costs. Further, these same foreign countries place HEAVY tariffs on our exports, plus China requires companies who import into China to make their patented technologies available. We are fucked so many ways that it is almost incalculable.

Trump is correct. We have been completely fucked over by this and we need someone to do a better job, as THAT IS THEIR JOB, to protect American citizens from foreign interests.

China is manipulating its currency?

Well, it's not like the US would do something like that, is it?

Are we really going to pretend that the only reason China is kicking our ass in world trade is currency manipulation? Sure, maybe relative to Korea or other low cost exporters, but America? Do we really care if it comes from China or someplace else, as long as they extend credit for our purchases. America can't compete...period.

THE ONLY THING IMPORTANT IS AN OPEN LINE OF CREDIT.

Greece didn't give a shit if they were competitive or not as long as Germany kept loaning them money to buy German production. Greece still sees their answer in credit, not competitiveness.

America is past worrying about cost. You can buy a new pickup for $60k and get it for no down, 0% interest and a 84 month loan. Who cares what it costs or where it came from?

The problem I have with Trump is his remedy for China... He wants to raise tarrifs on Chinese imports!! becuase China is manipulating its currency lower (until recently). My question to Donald would be "So you believe a weak currency is benificial to the economy?"

Shit like this Snowden thing, trying to make a third world country pay to build a multi billion dollar fence, the way he talks about women, like Carly.  I am not her fan, but man, don't judge a person's quality on appearance.

I suspect a good many people calling Trump a thug or whatever the perjoritive noun de-jour happens to be are really just frightened little childern afraid that their freebies will be taken from them.  The thought of actually being expected to work and become responsible for their sordid little lives is uncomfortable to say the least.  Better in their warped view to have mommy Clinton or daddy Bernie to give them what they want by taking it from someone else.   They've had almost eight years of the magic half breed doing it for them and I suppose that addiction is hard to break.  Tough shit.  Time, actually long past time, for the adults to reassume control.

Snowden is a traitor and is pulling off a snow job on the American people. He should be executed as a traitor along with the rest of his buddies at the CIA. I doubt that was what Trump meant though.

Edit: All you downvoters: you believe 911 was an inside job, covered up with the complicity of the media, yet you swallow the Snowden story, covered ad naseum by same media? I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding of the function of the media in society. Where was the coverage of the other NSA whistleblowers? Where is the current coverage of the reluctant CDC whistleblower? Just had a statement read by Rep. Posey before congress about how he and his colleagues brought trash bags into the lab to destroy data/evidence. Where is the media that loved to cover Snowjob on this one? Haven't even heard about it? What is the reluctant whistleblower's name even? You don't even know because of the media blackout? Yet Snowden is the real deal? Puuuuuleaze people.

Second edit:

FOOLS-

Trump isnt even a real candidate.  He is just someone that the MSM is using to get the ball rolling, and to get the other candidates to start spending their campaign warchests on advertising. Come on! THINK!

Further, the poster that said that politicians don't even matter, is correct.  They are 4th in the widely accepted hierarchy of US Power proffered by William Domhoff. 1) Corporations 2) Elite University Faculty and think tanks 3) Non-Profits (who BTW are simply tools of the Corporations in the large sense) and 4) politicians.

Who Rules America- by Domhoff- Univ of Southern Cal. at Santa Cruz,  widely considered the foremost scholar of power in the US as per the Sociology and Political Science professors since C. Wright Mills of the 40-50's.
