In Major Humiliation For Obama, Iran Sends Soldiers To Support Russian Troops In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

When Zero Hedge first reported ten days ago that Russian troops, in their bid to support the Assad regime in its ongoing confrontation with various ISIS, Al Nusra, and other US-supported groups in what has become the proxy war of 2015 (one which even comes with thousands of refugees for dramatic media impact) had been quietly massing in Syria and have set up a forward operating base near Damascus, there were those who were openly skeptical.

Then, just a few hours ago, Bloomberg finally confirmed that "top officials were scheduled to meet at the National Security Council Deputies Committee level to discuss how to respond to the growing buildup of Russian military equipment and personnel in Latakia" and that Russia is "set to start flying combat missions from a new air base inside Syria."

So yes, for whatever reason (and the reason as we explained is clear: natural gas pipelines) Russia is making not only its increasing support for Assad known, but also that it is in Syria and that any further US-funded and supported incursions by ISIS or whatever is the media scapegoat terrorist organization du jour, will not be tolerated.

To be sure, none of this is in any way a surprise to the US - just as the US is using ISIS as a pretext to invade or pressure any mid-east nation it desires "in order to hold the jihadist terrorist scourge", so Russia is now using ISIS as a comparable excuse to intervene. After all, if ISIS is the friend of humanity, then surely Russian aid will be welcome. That it is not, had made it abundantly clear that not only is ISIS just a convenient diversion, but the reasons for a Syrian invasion and deposition of Assad, are purely political and entirely in the realm of real-politik. Also, Russia's return to Syria in greater numbers is no surprise to anyone in the Pentagon - this was merely the long-awaited escalation of the foreplay that started when ISIS mysteriously emerged on the scene just over a year ago.

But in the latest twist in what we have been warning for months has the makings of the biggest proxy shooting war in years, one that will come as a major humiliation to the Obama administration, today we find out that none other than America's most recent diplomatic sweetheart in the Gulf region, Iran, has deployed ground soldiers into Syria in the past few days in cooperation with Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

This answers our question from earlier this week:

So as the coalition drives towards Sana'a - which the Saudi-owned al-Hayat newspaper says will be "liberated" after a "decisive battle" in Marib - and as Turkey, the US, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Qatar mull options for the final push to oust Assad in Syria, the only remaining question is whether Iran will remain on the sidelines and allow the Houthis to be routed and Assad deposed, or whether, like Moscow, Tehran finally decides that the time for rheotric has come to an end.

And on that note, we'll close with the following from AP: "Iran's foreign minister on Monday criticized demands for the resignation of Syrian President Bashar Assad, saying such calls have prolonged the Arab country's civil war. Mohammad Javad Zarif went so far as to say that those who have in the past years demanded Assad's ouster "are responsible for the bloodshed in Syria."

And so, Iran appears to have picked its side, and knowing that it has Obama wrapped around its finger as part of Obama's huge "diplomatic coup" of restoring relations with Iran as part of the Nuclear Deal (since any backtracking would further embarrass the US president) and can pivot in any direction in the Syrian conflict, it has decided to side with Russia and Syria.

According to Ynet, a further said that the increased military involvement in Syria was "due to Assad's crisis and under Russian-Iranian cooperation as a result of a meeting between Soleimani with Russian President Vladimir Putin."

Where things get even more complicated, is that while Israel would do everything it can to turn public opinion against Iran, especially if it is now involved in the Syrian debacle, Israel still has cordial relations with Russia: "We have dialogue with Russia and we aren't in the  middle of the Cold War," said the source. "We have open channels with the Russians."

So what does Iran joining the conflict really mean?  "It's hard to forecast whether Russia's presence will decide the fate of Syria, but it will lengthen the fighting and bloodletting for at least another year because ISIS won't give up," said the source.

In other words, unless even more foreign powers intervene, you know "to stop ISIS" by focusing all their firepower on attacking or defending Assad, the Syria conflict will drag on indefinitely with an unknown outcome. Which in turn begs the question: how long will Israel keep out of the war, and if it decides to join whether it be using one of the more traditional, false flag methods to enflame public opinion against Iran. Who will be collateral damage then.

One thing is certain: with the GOP unable to block the Iran nuclear deal in the Senate, should it emerge and be confirmed, that Iran is indeed present, then Obama will be faced with the biggest diplomatic headache in his administration's history, namely the explanation of why he is scrambling to restore diplomatic connections with a regime that couldn't even wait for the Iran deal to be formally passed before it turned its back on its newest "best friend" in the Oval Cabinet, and promptly side with the KGB agent who over the past two years has emerged as the biggest US enemy in three decades.

Furthermore, it also means that now Russia suddenly has the media leverage in its hands: a few "leaked" photos of Iran troops to the press and the phones in the US Department of State will explode.

But the most important news is that, as we warned previously, with every incremental party entering the Syria conflict, the probability of a non-violent outcome becomes increasingly negligible. And now that Iran is involved, it means that both Israel and Saudi Arabia will be dragged in, whether they like it or not.

Obama doesn't feel anything like humiliation over this.  He's off in a fantasy world where someday, far in the future, everyone will call him the greatest president in history.  He's resigned to the fact that his genius may not be recognized in his own time, but will be eventually.

In other words, a completely self-absorbed narcissist spiraling the down the drain of delusion and insanity where every failure is merely confirmation he'll be proven right in the long run.

For the missing reference to all the other US presidents none of whom a) refrained from waging war to the maximum extent possible at his time and b) even tried do do anything to change the DNA of the US which drives this cursed nation into constant aggression against the rest of the planet.

Apart from that, there is nothing to criticize with the above psychogram of the current toilet No.1.

I wonder if everybody wants to look at this too simplistically. A regime can be both 'friend' and 'enemy' simultaneously depending on shifting context. We all know the "Nuclear Threat" is pretty much bullshit, because if it was a real concern, attention would have shifted to Israel decades ago.  Iran is 'friend' to the extent that it can bring new energy to market and has valuable infrastructure and strategic geography.  Iran can be called 'enemy' or at least 'different' in the tribal, territorial, regional and religious sense (Shia Islam), in the government sense (pesky nationalist insubordination), and most importantly, by having its own central bank outside the petrodollar franchise. There are other considerations, including petty elite rivalries.

I've worked in an organization run by control freaks. The more you manipulate, the more you corrupt, and the greater imbalances become, leading to increasingly conflicted and band-aid decisionmaking. "ISIS" is the epitome of policy corruption, because proxy war eliminates accountability. Without accountability, there is no trust. Without trust, all that's left is pathological lies and war and capital misallocation. You have hundreds of thousands of people whose job depends on the existence of some kind of enemy. Where none could be found, one had to be invented.  It's the geostrategic equivalent of "global warming."

IMO the best thing that could happen right now would be to take power away from the people who advocate perpetuation of the "ISIS" scam. Never mind all the individual national bogeymen: "ISIS" undermines all international law. It is totally unaccountable. By implication, its sponsors can be considered Rogue States. If big war is to be avoided, priority should be to stop the project currently known as "ISIS."

It's interesting how there is little talk in mainstream media about the reasons for the current much-hyped refugee crisis. Angry displaced persons are fertile ground for new "ISIS" recruits. Amerika is on the verge of economic collapse. How long will it be before "ISIS" manifests in some kind of activity within the United States?  I don't think any military officer in good conscience would advocate manipulation of the American people in such an underhanded fashion, and yet that is the logical next step. Stop "ISIS."

So the bright idea of the neocons to dump masses of refugees (along with a few ISIS members) on to Europe, Fuck-the-EU style is already having blowback. The European states are having to defend their borders and have little to spare. This of course excludes France and the UK who are perfect Zionist stooges.

The European states are NOT defending their borders. If they were, there would not be any of these "refugees" there.

The problem can be solved quickly and easily.
1) Intercept the vessels enroute to Europe and force them to return to their port of origin.
2) Off load the vessel.
3) Confiscate the vessel and tow it back to EU
4) Scrap the vessel.
5) Find out who is financing these vessels and kill them..
...
For additional measure could also arrest and
jail the crew, but that is minor.
...
..Also find out who is ordering the Navies not to intercept these vessels. Hang them in a public square for treason.

..problem solved.

if you think Obama is losing you are the one being delusional. Here are some facts for you:

removed presedents:

So far USA has removed Kadaffi, Saddam, Mubarak, the Ukraian president, Hugo Chavez. Rouseff from Brazil is her way out. Not bad at all. In fact pretty damn good.  5 down, 2 left to go. Putin will be gone by 2018. Medvedev will be easy to get to.

countries USA has conquered:

USA has taken over Iraq, Afganistan, almost off of Syria, Lybia, almost all of Ukraine and almost ALL of ex-Soviet satelites. Not bad at all. What has Russia conquered? Russia has lost. No wonder Russia is beligerent.

NATO now has bases right next to Russia's borders. What bases does Russia have OUSIDE of Russia? Syria and Crimea. Russia has lost heavily again.

USA is now buddy buddy with Cuba, removing yet another Russian satelite.

The corporate military-industrail complex has made literally trillions of dollars. They are ALL happy now.

Things are going very well for USA. Assad is on his way out. 2 years, tops. Russia is knee deep in east Ukraine throwing millions to support the rebels and wasting millions it doesnt have to suport Assad.

Europe is divecifyng from Russia's gas and soon, they wont need thatuch of it anyway. The Turkish stream will NEVER be build. CHina cannot afford to buy much or Russia's gas.

USA has been ableto conquire aost all of he Middle East and soon it will go after the Tajik, Kirgyz, Kazaks and \western China in that order.

Rememeber, USA has a unique advantige: it can print as much dollrs as it needs to support its military adventures. NOBODY else can do that.

So overall, things are going pretty god for USA an rather badly for both Russia and China.  If I was Putin I'd would be damn worried right now.

if you gonna vote me down, give me facts as to why I am wrong/were I am wrong in my facts. I am waiting.

Look up how well the American oil companies have done in Iraq since our "victory" there.  Wouldn't you expect them to get the lions share of the spoils if the victory was ours?

As much as some may hate the Obama administration, it actually deserves a lot of credit, and here's why. It's been long known that the Saudi's are not a friend of the US. They were really more of a partner that they had to deal with due to their status as a major energy producer and the US being a major energy consumer. The government knows of high level Saudi involvement in 9/11 and the financing other Sunni terrorist organizations, yet they go to great lengths to cover it up. Why has this changed? Shale oil produced in the US. The US will no longer be reliant on the Saudi's oil, hence the pivot towards Iran. With the US becoming more energy independent, there seems to be a desire for some in the US government to slowly disengage from the ME and let the main players in the region figure things out on there own. The only reason to have been there in the first place was because of oil. The Iranians will be a major player on the geopolitical stage in the ME with the Europeans lifting sanctions, regardless of what the US did, therefore the US had no choice but to do a deal with Iran. They will also be a necessary counterweight to Israel (not really a friend either) and the other Sunni Arab governements. Think about it, who are the main terrorists organizations in the world? Sunni muslims organizations financed the our so called allies. The main Shia organization, Hezbollah, has no interest in fighting against the US and is financed by Iran. Were the Iranians killing US troops in Iraq? Absolutely. Was the US in Iran killing Iranians? Absolutely. There are covert wars going on all over the world. There's a lot that goes on that doesn't make the mainstream news, hence the word covert. Some of this information is out there for anyone who is willing to look for it and digest that information with an objective mind. I could go on and on, but you get the point...

The US is toothless, with a foreign policy that reeks of desperation.

So do I hate him?  No.  A dummy is a dummy.  About the worst thing in the world you can have is a dummy run a state in retreat, much like an accountant running a business in decline.  It will be purged from within without any regard for the public.

Well to be honest I think this whole Iran deal was a ruse from the get go, it will be used by the next administration as an excuse to bomb the shite out of them when Iran is "caught" developing material or the material used in the dirty bomb that is let loose in some metro area is "traced back to Iran".

In reality Iran just signed onto their own death warrant in that deal, consider who they made the deal with, that's all you need to know.

There is something very phony about it.  Iran is one of now 3(?) countries w/o central banks?  The others are Syria and N Korea.

I think there are a LOT of big business deals that multinationals will do with Iran.  So it almost always comes down to $$$$.

Also are the Saudis oil fields dying?  Iran and Iraq have huge oil reserves.  Maybe both are in the top 4 not counting Canada and Venezuela oil sands.   Pure liquid oil?  My guess is Russia, Iran and Iraq while the Saudi fields are dying rapidly.

I think this is why there was a pivot. Dr. Jim Willie predicted this pivot a year ago.

British and American bankers and businessmen have been on the ground since before Obama's State Dept. started negotiations.

WHO do you think pushed to get a deal before the election that might put the Republicans back in control of the State Dept.?  They want to settle up with Obama's cronies and the moderate Republicans NOW so that they don't have to pay even more to the next Administration.

Hedgie and IB money is already being passed under and across tables: business is ongoing.

They just need legal cover so they are paying up to get the 'regulators' to stand down in DC.

What's vague? Its shaping up as the disunited-US against everybody else. So no World War and the US just fades externally, while internally all hell breaks loose as the Imperial tax provided by the GRC evaporates. Why do you think they are moving this ship, very publicly, into the Eastern Med.? To me, its to make a clearer connection between Russian Military in Syria and their nuclear back up, should anybody in the Western-Axis want to target them.

Iran policy in Iraq and Syria was a total failure.

In any war one must act decisively instead of endless and protractive activities. Wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan are good examples. The same is true for Russia with their wars in Ukraine and Syria.

The present flood of illegals to EU opens huge opportunities for Russia. This "refuge" flood is nothing less but a war when foreign armies invade their territory. This is not any different from when European colonists invaded the American continent. Unfortunately for EU, their people don't understand what is going on and are betrayed by their governments. The consequences will not be much different from what happened to Native Americans.

ISIS can't face the Syrian Army, it is just that the West has so many Islamic armies, Syria is spread so very thin. Count them, over five western armed funded and trained Islamic armies are attacking Syria. ISIS is the least capable, they are mostly faggots from London, Manchester and Tripoli.

"If the ISIS mercenaries have to face real soldiers,"

The renegade US sponsored ISIS has never faced real soldiers.  Had they ever come eyeball to eyeball with US troops, they would have been vulture bait since.

Their strategy is using the brain-washed foreign idiots to drive truck bombs into the enemies defensive positions, one after another.  Then they unleashed their fresh maniacal murderers at whoever is left which is probably next to no one.  Any Iraqi or Syrian troops who survived the truck bombs would have high-tailed it before ISIS forces.

They like to promote the propaganda that they do not fear death.

That is because most of the time, they never met a bullet coming their way.

I will admit tho, they are absolutely fearless against UNARMED men, women and children.

Influential Pro-Israel Group Suffers Stinging Political Defeat

Continue reading the main storyShare This Page

WASHINGTON — Officials at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee knew the odds were against them in the fight to block President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran from surviving a congressional vote. But the influential pro-Israel group threw itself into a nearly $30 million advertising and lobbying effort to kill the accord anyway.

On Thursday, the committee, known as Aipac, was handed a stinging defeat. After Mr. Obama mustered enough Democratic backing in the Senate to halt a vote on a resolution of disapproval against the deal, a group known for its political clout saw its power and reputation in Washington diminished.

“They failed — they couldn’t even get a vote,” said Clifford Kupchan, an Iran expert and the chairman of the Eurasia Group, a consulting firm, who noted that Aipac had gone “all in” and tried everything to stop the deal. “It’s among the biggest setbacks for Aipac in recent memory.”

The loss has raised difficult questions about the future of Aipac, a group formed in 1951 just a few years after the birth of Israel. Aipac has long drawn its political potency from its reservoirs of loyalty among members of both parties, but that bipartisan veneer all but vanished in recent weeks as the debate over the Iran deal became increasingly bitter.

Iran, the big prize, is in play.

The SCO alliance seeks to gain Iran as its southwestern flank and, through Iran, gain domination over the Gulf's energy resources.  And the Anglo Imperium is belatedly seeking to woo Tehran back into some sort of partnership, or at least limit Iran's cooperation with the Russia-China Axis.  It will be interesting to see if the Persians cut a deal with one side or the other, or seek to maintain a strategic, non-alligned position.

Should be a fascinating decade ahead, assuming most of us live to see the end of it.

August, I agree with everything you said, except that, like the author, you fail to notice that Iran made it's partnering decisions a long time ago. Fine, some not-brain-dead parts of the US government are finally trying to woo Iran and turn off the animosity. They've had a similar epiphany about Cuba. In both cases, its too late.

The only reason Iran is not in the SCO, etc. already is that the zino-opposition realizes, in an ironic way, that its best to boil the zino-frog slowly.
