What Bubble? 6 Castles That Are Cheaper To Rent Than An Apartment In NYC Or SF

Tyler Durden's picture

As we have noted numerous times in the past, there is a Bull market in serfdom.

America's Renter Nation has never spent more of its paycheck on rent and as Zumper notes, with rent prices in San Francisco and New York at the highest in the nation, affordability does not seem to exist in these two metropolitan areas. For some idea of the scale, there are actually castles in France and Italy that can be rented for about the same price as average apartments in these cities...

All of the castles on this list have at least five bedrooms (one has eleven), while the correspondingly priced apartments in San Francisco or New York range from a studio with a murphy bed to a four bedroom.

1. Antic Castle, Tuscany, Italy- 11 bed, 11 bath, $4,040/month

Nestled on a private hill and surrounded by trees and vineyards, this massive eleven bed castle can comfortably house up to twenty five guests. Built in the Middle Ages, this former aristocratic residence has been renovated to include modern day luxuries such as air conditioning, central heating, and satellite television. However, the 17th century stone fireplaces and beautiful terracotta floors still exude a warm, historical charm.

Along with concierge service, this apartment building also comes with a fitness center, residents lounge, and on-site laundry. Having twenty five guests may be a little tight, however.

With buying out of the question for mnost (hint - Student loans and affordability) and renting becoming increasingly unaffordable, the entire household formation "upside case" is now collapsing on itself, something we've discussed on a number of occasions. Recall the rise in "parental co-residence rates":

Note that this situation has the potential to become self-fullfilling. That is, as homeownership becomes increasingly unrealistic, demand for rentals will only increase, driving further increases in the cost of rental housing. The question then becomes this: what happens when a family that can't afford a down payment can no longer afford to pay the rent?

The irony of SF never gets old. That rental bubble is driven by what? Oh yeah, "tech jobs"... the kind of jobs which can telecommute... faggot bay is nothing but a hipster circle-jerk of bad ideas perpetuated by hype and financed by suckers. It's wallstreet for hippies.

What is insane is that all the premium paid for "tech jobs" in that part of the country is erased and then some by the high cost of living there.

Yeah I know prices can only go up so they'll get it all back when they sell. Except when the prices go down.

We rent a small castle in the adrennes for the entire family for 8 days once a year, 6 bedrooms, 2 batrooms, massive kitchen, sets us back 1200 euro's.

Nice for a little bit of time away but I'd never live there!

The closest town is 30 minutes and there only live a few old people. And the last time we went I busted my transmission on my car driving those shitty hillside roads that where build by for god knows the romans.

You can't compaire that with a appartment in New York or Frisco where everybody wants to be and where everything is 50 yards away.

Yes, MTA buses drivng by, cars honking, street merchants from Africa selling goods, more traffic enforcement agents than you can shake a stick at and high prices for food at small grocery stores. And everyone loves those sidewalks jammed with tourists looking at the NYC sites.  Not to mention how hot the city is in the summer.  Or how cold it was the last two winters.

By the way, those recently renovated apartments in Manhattan that rent for over $2,500 get away with escaping from rent stabilization by almost certainly claiming bogus super duper renovation costs (major capital improvements).  Eventually, some real estate lawyer is going to start trolling for victims of this fraud and you will see some of these rents go down and the apartments going back into rent stabilization.

1800/mo to live in a bunk bed situated in a liberal sewer? I can't think of a better definition of Hell. Sad to think my parents had a 4 story house on Union St in the 1970s and sold it saying " We've got to get out of this crazy city." Then they moved to Malibu and bought a 1/2 acre on Zuma beach with two homes and then did the same damn thing 4 years later. *Sigh*

So true.

I remember walking with my mom in Golden Gate Park when I was 5 and watching the hippys having sex. " What are those people doing Mommy?"
"They're expressing themselves sweetie." That was her response to just about everything in San Fran. Took me the longest time to figure out what that meant.

10 years ago I needed my passport fast because we had an unexpected trip to Paris and I didn't have my birth certificate. Mr volunteered to fly up to San Fran and get it for me 'cuz he really wanted to see it. He had quite an experience at the courthouse and the environs. He told me he was thankful I didn't go there by myself. I asked what happened. " Please, I want to delete that whole horrible experience from my mind."

It's a good thing there is no inflation. Maybe Janet can fix that with some more QE.

By the way, those are good prices for New York apartments and don't include the huge broker fee. One-bedrooms are in the upper 3000 to low 4000 range.

In New England people are fucking insane. Case in point:

http://u.zillow.com/p3rWiC

It's a fucking shitty ranch house 30 miles west of Boston in a suburb that looks like an average West Virginia redneck town.

$3200 a month asking rent

Look, we polished the floors and put in stainless steel appliances. The house should sell for $175k tops. $3200 a month can buy you one hell of a nice house. Who would pay that kind of money to rent a place like that?

Rents for shit one bedroom apartments in towns that look like Deliverance are $1500 a month. The world has collectively lost its damn mind.

Wow!  I'm suprised at that kind of value for a property in Middlesex county.  If you want crappy housing but with higher property values, go over to Westford and try to purchase a house there.  As I recall the price of a starter home is around 500k and the higher end homes are up to over a million now.  Oh the people of New England are spending all of their disposable income on their houses.  Why?  Because it's massachusetts!  They are the greatest state in Amerika!  The Irish (and the other groups) are so conceited, that nothing in the South can come close.  Except for the Louisiana culture but that's another story.  Oh and what you get for your money in MA, you can get a way better quality of life in any other part of the country.

American houses are built out of garbage and are falling apart within 10 years.  That's what happenns when you pay Mexicans $3 an hour to nail random shit together and call it a house.  European houses are built out of stone and rock solid.  You just rennovate the insides when you feel the need.  Even the roof lasts 50+ years because it is clay tiles not paper with glue and sand on it like shitty American houses.

Thu, 09/10/2015 - 20:46 | 6533885 Yen Cross

The build quality in American homes does suck Willy. I agree with you 100%

If you pay the builder to do things right,[ materials and labor] look to pay 50-75% more for the structure.

I look at a house like a Nuke Plant. If one screw is missing, or one beam isn't plumb, it's a shack.

Those small brick and mortar European homes are meant to last.

Especially since the '08 crisis. The builders got top-notch tradesmen @ half the cost and expected them to perform for the same rate as they did before. Sometimes you got lucky, sometimes you won't.

One of my checks when we bought our house in 2001 was to check the cabinetry. I despise particle board. Since our basement was unfinished we could get a good view of the construction. Why people fall for these McMansions with vaulted ceiling garbage is beyond me. Someone is laughing all the way to the bank.

The problem is that it's a 17 year old house. We live in a consumer society now it is assumed you want to replace stuff every few years to stay current so the stuff they build them with it isn't made to last. A 1700s house built for a wealthy owner back then and then rennovated with the best stuff will be much better. Even as late as the 1950s homes in the USA were built with materials that could be refinished, refurbished, etc. But today? Only if you're spending the big money and know what to get. A house built in the 1990s is going to need lots of stuff replaced. It was meant to be replaced.

Not just wealthy owners. We live in a very modest farmhouse that dates from mid-1700s and it's a simply built place but holy hell did they build things to last back then. The joists of the roof are a foot square on the cross section and redwood all the way, the walls are 18 inches of sandstone block and when we moved in we refinished the kitchen walls with insulated board so had to knock off the existing hard plaster. It had horsehair in it & the builder reckoned it might be from the original finish, just tarted up here and there over the years. I dread to think what the old builders would think of the glorified shacks that get flung up today.

Any VAT (value added tax) with those Euro. rental fees? Not that that would tilt the comparison by much. Just askin'.

Who in their right mind would want to live in tranquility and splendor in a Uruppean castle when they can "live" inside the bloated belly of a dying frenzied beast instead?

"what happens when a family that can't afford a down payment can no longer afford to pay the rent?'

Things go back to how they were 100 years ago or more: multiple families sharing houses, several people living entirely out of a single room. Why are people so certain they're immune to falling standards of living? Being used to having nice things like lots of space, unshared bathrooms and a separate kitchen is not the same as being entitled to them.
