"Be Our Guest": Russia Warns Washington Of "Unintended Incidents" In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

On Thursday evening, we chronicled the latest in the drama that is Syria’s horrific civil war, noting that, according to an Israeli defense source, “hundreds” of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are on the ground in Syria fighting alongside the Russians to support Bashar al-Assad’s depleted forces as they battle to regain control of the country.

If true, that would answer the following question which we’ve been asking for quite some time: will Iran remain on the sidelines and allow the Houthis to be routed in Yemen and Assad deposed in Syria, or will Tehran, like Moscow, finally decide that the time for rhetoric has come to an end?

Reports of Iranian involvement come on the heels of rampant speculation about the scope of Russia’s military buildup near Latakia where US “intelligence” and a series of unnamed “Lebanese sources” claim Moscow is essentially preparing for a full-on push to rout any and all domestic opposition to the Assad regime. The question, of course, is what happens when foreign opposition to the Assad regime isn’t willing to accept the restoration of the strongman’s rule.

Predictably, there’s been no shortage of back-and-forth banter between John Kerry and Sergei Lavrov over the past several days. Here's how Lavrov characterizes the exchange:

“Kerry was also pushing the very strange idea that supporting Bashar Assad in his anti-terror fight only strengthens the positions of ISIS, because the sponsors of ISIS would pump even more arms and money into it,” Lavrov said.

“It's an absolutely upside-down logic and yet another attempt to appease those who use terrorists to fight dissenting regimes,” the Russian FM said, mentioning US attempts to cooperate with varrious extremist groups in Syria over the past few years.

“It's a colossal mistake that the US-led [anti-ISIS] coalition never considered interaction with Syria, not even information exchange,” Lavrov said. “I cannot comprehend this logic, or rather absolute lack of logic.”

“We help not only Syria, we also provide weapons to Iraq and other countries of the region that find themselves on the frontline with the terror threat. Equally for Iraq and other countries, we do so without any political preconditions,” Lavrov said.

And on Friday, Lavrov took it up a notch with a series of very serious-sounding (albeit hilariously overstated, we hope) soundbites delivered at a news conference in Russia. Here’s Reuters:

At a news conference, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia was sending equipment to help Assad fight Islamic State. Russian servicemen were in Syria, he said, primarily to help service that equipment and teach Syrian soldiers how to use it.

Russia was also conducting naval exercises in the eastern Mediterranean, he said, describing the drills as long-planned and staged in accordance with international law.

Lavrov blamed Washington for cutting off direct military-to-military communications between

Russia and NATO over the Ukraine crisis, saying such contacts were "important for the avoidance of undesired, unintended incidents".

"We are always in favor of military people talking to each other in a professional way. They understand each other very well," Lavrov said. "If, as (U.S. Secretary of State) John Kerry has said many times, the United States wants those channels frozen, then be our guest."

Yes, "be our guest", which, unless something is lost in translation there (as it was when Hillary Clinton hilariously presented Lavrov with a giant red button that was supposed to say "reset" but actually said "overcharged" in 2009) sounds quite a bit like the Kremlin telling Washington that it's just fine with Russia if the West wants to risk getting into a scenario where Russian and US jets end up in an "accidental" dog fight in the skies above Syria.

We will now anxiously await Kerry's response which will almost certainly contain the words "very" and "concerned", which would be accurate as long as he's talking about Assad's fate and not the fate of ISIS.

While European countries are being lectured about their failure to take in enough refugees, Saudi Arabia – which has taken in precisely zero migrants – has 100,000 air conditioned tents that can house over 3 million people sitting empty.

I thought about that. Like all the young smart ones leaving Greece, Puerto Rico and Ireland for better employment opportunities. The smart kids are going to bolt for countries that offer the same, without the domestic religious violence sure to come. Especially young families with kids. EU families and young professionals can leave their country as easily as the same kids are fleeing the urban centers in the US.

The 'brain drain' is going to be horrific in the EU. Maybe Hungary and the others figured this out...

I keep hearing how great Russian missile tech is... maybe we'll get a chance to find out.

It certainly hasn't stopped Israel regularly bombing the Syrian Army, the only force able (so far) to halt ISIS (and the SAS no doubt working with them)

Russia (just like the U.S.) does not export their most capable weapons systems.  They export down-graded or previous versions, in order that their own military remain a credible threat to other nations (i.e. NATO and neighboring countries).

Weapons tech development is moves and counter moves with technical advances countered by heavy doses of espionage, spying, and reverse engineering.

Israel has and has not been able to defeat Russian missile technology.  The IAF (like any good air force) refines it's tactics depending on how their operations are progressing.  During the Six Days War, the IAF was initially pretty successful agains Arab AA, but faced stiffening resistance and mounting losses as both sides sought to gain superiority over each other.  During the Yom Kippur War, Syrian AA was handing the IAF it's ass…until the IAF changed tactics.  Moves and counter moves.

Same as it ever was.

No, but when a real hot war breaks out, you wouldn't believe how fast new or evolved weapons systems can get pumped out!  It's all about priorities.  Today, most people are concerned about the economy or football season starting, or Kim's ass...  If an actual war were to break out between the NATO and Russia, they'll be pumping out F-35, Su-35, Armatas, etc. as fast as they can...unless things go nuclear.  Then all bets are off and we might be back to sharp sticks and rocks :-)

F-35 loses in a dogfight with a F-16 so probably will do the same against a 80s and 90s technology Russian fighter. The only thing the F-35 can hope for is that its stealth technology will protect it before the enemy detects it. Then it better gets out of there.

During the last major war between Syria and Israel, The Syrians lost a large percentage of their Aircrafts within a few days of war not because of opposing aircrafts but simply due to preplanned sabotage. Israel was well prepared for that war.

Syria knows there are plenty of enemies within the regime ready to sabotage. It was all easy to see during the initial days when multiple family members of Assad were all killed by bombs.

So, I would say, Aircrafts are not important, proper culture, tradition, and religious factors play a more important role.

Jewish Tradition is winning. That is all too clear. Islam has failed.

Please don't start with the lecture about Islam being misunderstood. The fact is a strong islamic exteremist group was created. Maybe even by Israel. the fact is fact.

Jewish tradition can never win, because it offers mankind nothing but subservience to a tiny racist elite.  Both Christianitty and Islam have been hijacked by Jewish infilitrators (especially the Sabbateans and Frankists who follow the false Messiah Sabbatai Zvi), but at their core they both still have universalist ethical teachings which give human beings hope.

The Saudis and their Wahhabi ideology (invented by the Sabbateans and their British agents) will destroy themseves from within.  The loving, universalist Islam of the Sufis will be there to fill the void when it is all over, as it always has throughout Islamic history

Syria is "not" having a horrific civil war. They are resisting a horrific invasion by the USA's CIA and Israel's Mossad.

Pay attention folks!

Pay attention folks??  Me thinks you are asking way too much of the dumbed down populace of the USA in particular, and the rest of the "western" countries to some degree.  When 90% of the people in the USA get most of their information from the MSM, which is controlled by six corporations, it is pretty difficult for them to do any critical thinking or independent analysis of world events.  To make things worse probably 50+% of people under the age of 30 in the USA couldn't tell you where Syria or Ukraine is even located. Unless this turns around soon the rest of the people in the USA and the west that are awake to some degree are going to get screwed.

this whole thing makes no fuggin sense to me. assad is fighting ISIS. 2 years since obama's "JV comment" on ISIS and still no "plan". russia stepping in to help assad from falling. we want assad out and i say "why"? has he ever attacked us? threatened us? if assad falls to ISIS, syria has a huge border with israel. do we expect ISIS to stop there? does obama want israel blown off the map? assad never attacked israel so would a "regime change" in syria provide any upside for israel or us for that matter or just more open land controlled by another entity (since thats worked out so well in libya, iraq)

seems to me as-tho obama is simply pissed because putin's had enough of this shit and is finally stepping in & might actually look good on the world stage if his plan to back assad actually erradicates ISIS. WTF has our "plan" in syria produced? 60 rebels who are going to fight assad & ISIS? (i think 55 of which got captured by al queda.

like my grandmother once said, we should have never gone into the middle east. we got enough of our own problems here at home. for a guy who won the nobel peace prize, seems like he's taking the world closer than its ever been to all-out war.

We want assad out and i say "why"?

It's pretty simple really.  Iran, Iraq and Syria announced plans to build a pipeline from Iran through Iraq and Syria to ship natural gas to Europe in 2011.  Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia approached Assad to get permission to build a separate pipeline to ship gas from their fields to Europe and Assad said "no way".  As soon as that happened the cries started from all western countries (i.e. the USA and their European vassals) to remove Assad from power.  The war there, and the efforts by the west to remove Assad, has always been about pipelines and natural gas but has been sold to the sheep in the west as getting rid of a dictator, which is total BS.  If the west was so concerned about getting rid of dictators why don't they go after the criminal regimes in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar??

Remember when we first heard about ISIS and saw the pictures? They were all dressed identically, with their black masks, head garments, and t-shirts with a professionally done logo in white ... all brand new!

I wonder who printed those t-shirts. Pretty impressive for a rag-tag group of rebels don't you think? I wonder if they can all fly 757's too.

Israel is the dominant military power in the region and the hawks there would like transfer the conflict to the military sphere.  ISIS is no more a threat to Israel than the PLO was.  Having a radical regime in Syria and/or other Arab countries gives Israel the excuse to pulverrize the country if they want.

You could have used a stopwatch to clock how long it took for Desert Storm to knock out the Iraqi army.

Even with all the tech, money, and time, the USA couldn't get a handle on Afghanistan, or even Iraq. Too many similarities to Vietnam. They were never suppose to "win", but to prolong the conflict as long as possible. It fails to pass a reality test to think how these desert rats can keep operating....working under the assumption that they are being "perused". It was fairly clear from the get-go that the plan was to herd them back into Syria vs. eradication.

Syria: The (Russian Air) Cavalry Is Coming

In light of the catastrophic outcome of the "western" war on Libya the Russian government declared to oppose any further such "regime change" in the Middle East. But the U.S. continues to train, arm and finance insurgents against the Syrian Arab Republic and, under the disguise of fighting the Islamic State, prepares to take down the Syrian government. Eliminating the Syrian government would likely create a radical jihadist state in Damascus and lead to massacres and mass refugee movements.
