Monsanto Stunned - California Confirms 'Roundup' Will Be Labeled "Cancer Causing"

Submitted by Claire Bernish via TheAntiMedia.org,

California just dealt Monsanto a blow as the state’s Environmental Protection Agency will now list glyphosate - the toxic main ingredient in the U.S.’ best-selling weedkiller, Roundup - as known to cause cancer.

Under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 — usually referred to as Proposition 65, its original name — chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm are required to be listed and published by the state. Chemicals also end up on the list if found to be carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) — a branch of the World Health Organization.

In March, the IARC released a report that found glyphosate to be a “probable carcinogen.”

Besides the “convincing evidence” the herbicide can cause cancer in lab animals, the report also found:

“Case-control studies of occupational exposure in the U.S.A., Canada, and Sweden reported increased risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma that persisted after adjustments to other pesticides.”

California’s decision to place glyphosate on the toxic chemicals list is the first of its kind. As Dr. Nathan Donley of the Center for Biological Diversity said in an email to Ecowatch, “As far as I’m aware, this is the first regulatory agency within the U.S. to determine that glyphosate is a carcinogen. So this is a very big deal.”

Now that California EPA’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has filed its notice of intent to list glyphosate as a known cancer agent, the public will have until October 5th to comment. There are no restrictions on sale or use associated with the listing.

Monsanto was seemingly baffled by the decision to place cancer-causing glyphosate on the state’s list of nearly 800 toxic chemicals. Spokesperson for the massive company, Charla Lord, told Agri-Pulse that

"Glyphosate is an effective and valuable tool for farmers and other users, including many in the state of California. During the upcoming comment period, we will provide detailed scientific information to OEHHA about the safety of glyphosate and work to ensure that any potential listing will not affect glyphosate use or sales in California.”

Roundup is sprayed on crops around the world, particularly with Monsanto’s Roundup-Ready varieties — genetically engineered to tolerate large doses of the herbicide to facilitate blanket application without harming crops. Controversy has surrounded this practice for years — especially since it was found farmers increased use of Roundup, rather than lessened it, as Monsanto had claimed.

Less than a week after the WHO issued its report naming glyphosate carcinogenic, Monsanto called for a retraction — and still maintains that Roundup is safe when used as directed.

On Thursday, an appeals court in Lyon, France, upheld a 2012 ruling in favor of farmer Paul Francois, who claimed he had been chemically poisoned and suffered neurological damage after inhaling Monsanto’s weedkiller, Lasso. Not surprisingly, the agrichemical giant plans to take its appeal to the highest court in France.

It’s still too early to tell whether other states will follow California’s lead.

What a f'n scam.  Most farmers barely break even every year.  Many make as little as $200/acre.  All while Monsanto and the others collect $250/acre from the same farmer year after year in seed, fertilizer and biocide costs.  Only Monsanto is getting rich off this system.  Farmers get f'ed year after year.  And they keep coming back for more.  Wake up and learn about soil life.  Google: Food Soil Web  Youtube: Gabe Brown.

We were spraying roundup on school playgrounds during the day. The workers mixing and applying it were not wearing masks and I went straight to the dept of health and informed them. I almost got fired.

The lesson I got is that if a chemical needs to be handled with masks and gloves it's still probably safe for kids to eat. Kraft Dinner is a good example as well.

Call up your local extention office and ask what PPE you need to apply Round-up. Be prepared to get laughed at. Aside from downing the whole jug on the rocks there is pretty much no way it can harm you. Stop believing all the idiots out there.....

Glysophate began life as a boiler cleaner.

It is a chealator of metals and very good at what it does.

Glysophate kills plants by starving the plant of minerals and metals.

It kills people the same way.

Please stop spewing lies, you clearly don't know what you are talking about. Glysophate is all about enzymes. It is translocated throughout the plant where it inhibits the enzymes involved in the synthesis of the aromatic amino acids tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylananine.

As a botonist I can tell you it is by far one of the safest broad spectrum herbicides out there.

If you believe different..........You're an idiot just like the EPA in Ca.

What the hell is a botonist? Does not exist. Do you mean botanist?

Amino acids are essential building block of plants so by inhibiting the enzymes necessary to produce them one could conclude that the plant is being 'starved'. As a botanist you would know that weeds grow resistant to Glyphosate forcing farmers to use more of it, use other toxic herbicides or to manually remove the weeds. Glyphosate has shown up in human urine, human breast milk and stays longer in the environment than biotech companies claim. Apart from carcinogenic effects it also has been proven to be toxic at lower doses than previously assumed and to be an endocrine disruptor. In Argentina where the stuff is used intensely cancer rates and birth defects have gone up on the countryside.

So scientists at the EPA and WHO and other institutions are idiots then?

Roger that.  The product is observed by the plant it is applied to, is dispersed throughout including roots, and any root in the ground penetrating other roots, as roots do, if water or nutrients are in short supply, the 2nd kill is underway.  If the geniuses in charge can create a robot to serve burgers, they can surely create a robot to pull weeds.  The bees and birds, worms, insects could use a break from this chemical which when smells like death.

Let's be fair - California labels EVERYTHING as cancer causing - cars, wires, extension cords, houses, toys, paint, etc. Anyone who actually does come down with cancer in California could list 42 separate 'causes'. About the only thing California does not label as cancer causing is marijuana, meth, and other drugs.

Once Monsanto pays off the politicians, tweaks the recipe for Roundup, and labels it 'green' - you can use as much of the new improved Roundup as you want - at least until it kills you!

There is nothing but internet memes to suggest that this chemical causes cancer. Especially in the way that humans are exposed to it.  If this gains ground and goes national, we have all lost. Science means nothing in the face of Facebook posts.  We might as well kiss our vaccinations goodbye.

You are wrong.

A new study found that long-term exposure to tiny amounts of Roundup, thousands of times lower than what is permitted in U.S. drinking water, may lead to serious problems in the liver and kidneys.

"It was previously known that glyphosate consumption in water above authorized limits may provoke kidney failure and reproductive difficulties. The results of the study presented here indicate that consumption of far lower levels of a GBH formulation, at admissible glyphosate-equivalent concentrations, are associated with wide-scale alterations of the liver and kidney transcriptome that correlate with the observed signs of hepatic and kidney anatomorphological and biochemical pathological changes in these organs. In addition, as the dose of Roundup we investigated is environmentally relevant in terms of human, domesticated animals and wildlife, levels of exposure, our results potentially have significant health implications for animal and human populations. Furthermore, data also suggests that new studies incorporating testing principles from endocrinology and developmental epigenetics, in particular to evaluate the endocrine disruptive capability of GBH/glyphosate, should be performed to investigate potential consequences of low dose exposure during early life as well as in adults."

Monsanto has a large group of internet trolls that will post disinformation almost immediately in any Roundup/glyphosphate discussion.

The comments indicate that many are aware of these trolls.

I believe it is evil and wrong.

On a social level I believe Monsanto should be held accountable for disinformation posted on their behalf.

The glyphospahte discussion has an analogy in the tobacco battles fought years ago on the negative effects of smoking.  The tobacco companies lost big time and faced large social penalties, so should Monsanto with glyphosphate.

Ditto that...lab results are routinely goal-seeked.  Glyphosate ag products are now widely availble in 41% concentration knockoffs of the Roundup brand, with the Monsanto patent having expired back in 2000. My favorite low-cost knockoff is the HDX 41% brand from Home Depot.

Yall just need to man up and build up a tolerance for Monsanto products. Think of the money you will save buying non-organic! Seriously, does anyone verify organic labeling is really organic? I would bet a large portion of organic labels are just a markup + a lable.

EPA banning glyphosate in CA? Hahaha! Without water, crops & weeds won't grow anyway. Problem solved! The arrogance & stupidity of FEDGOV bureaucrats is exceeded only by their shameless corruption & pandering.

Here's a flash for Militant Enviromentalists: The earth does not care about you. The earth does not know that you are alive. The earth will not change an inch after you are dead. The earth will be doing just fine long after you have died, been killed, or have starved to death. If no one cares enough to bury your body, insects & animals will consume your carcass.

The systems of the earth are ruthlessly effecient & absolutely implacable. For as long as t-i-m-e is referred to as "today" the earth-system (including the Sun and other cosmic influences) will continue to process man-made chemicals, plastic bags, landfill garbage et cetera--eventually reducing all that flotsam & jetsam to the small atomic dust they were before the trembling hand of man manipulated those elements & raw materials into useful tools & compounds.

If you believe that you are having a significant impact on the systems of the earth, you are mistaken. You need the earth more--much, much more--than the earth will ever need you. The earth does not love you. The earth does not care if you love it. Environmentalism is a lucrative racket for crooked lawyers & bureaucrats.

The impact of which you speak is measured in terms of a human lifespan--a miniscule standard compared to the billions of years that planet earth has existed. In this present world, human greed exploitation & waste is no doubt an inconvenience & discomfiture to many. But where the earth is concerned it's one more item in a long, long line of evolving circumstances. Like the wise men said, "This too shall pass." Good luck.
