Obamacare Backfires - 400,000 Immigrants Lose Benefits

Tyler Durden's picture

With tens of thousands of "lucky" Syrian immigrants due to arrive on American shores, it appears these hope-full refugeese may face life in the US is not as 'free' as they hoped. As AP reports, new government procedures have caused more than 400,000 current immigrants to lose healthcare coverage they received under Obamacare this year. The change in procedure shortens the timeframe during which foreign-born citizens can resolve eligibility issues, which has caused 423,000 people to lose their state-sponsored benefits - more than four times more than last year.

As AP reports, the number of coverage terminations could actually be higher. The 423,000 figure only represents states served by the federal health insurance market. That does not include immigrant-rich California and New York, which run their own insurance exchanges.

The Obama administration says it is following the letter of the law, and this year that means a shorter time frame for resolving immigration and citizenship issues. But advocates say the administration's system for verifying eligibility is seriously flawed, and consumers who are legally entitled to benefits are paying the price.

"Same dog, different collar," said Jane Delgado, president of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, evoking an old Spanish saying about situations that do not seem to change. "The bottom line is people got taken off health insurance when they applied in good faith."

The National Immigration Law Center says it believes the overwhelming majority of the 423,000 people whose coverage was terminated are legal U.S. residents and citizens snared in a complicated, inefficient system for checking documents.

Angel Padilla, the center's health policy analyst, said it defies common sense that that many immigrants without legal authorization to be in the country would risk alerting a federal agency by applying for taxpayer-subsidized benefits.

"Somebody who is trying to submit documents over and over ... is someone who believes they have an eligible immigration status," Padilla said. By comparison, a total of 109,000 people lost coverage because of citizenship and immigration issues during all of 2014.

President Barack Obama's health care law specifies that only citizens and legal U.S. residents are entitled to coverage through the new insurance markets that offer subsidized policies. The administration says this year the law provides just a 95-day window for resolving documentation issues that involve citizenship and immigration. There was no such clock in 2014 because it was the first year of HealthCare.gov's coverage expansion.

Last year, "we had the authority to provide consumers more flexibility — we were not taking action on the strict timeline," said Ben Wakana, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services. "In 2015, we moved to the timeline of about three months, so consumers need to act quickly to submit supporting documentation."

Does this then mean that in one swoop, the Democrats just lost 400,000 potential voters and the 'boomerang' of Syrian refugees suddenly saw their window of free healthcare opportunity shrink dramatically?

"Balancing the budget deficit so's they can manufacture more arms."

18% of the federal budget is spent on military.  Sixty eight percent (68 - over two thirds) is spent on the Free Shit Army.  If I had to pick I'd say spend the 18%.  At least I get planes, ships, and leading edge research for that.  All I get from the FSA is to be told to eff off and gimme more as they burn down cities.

Lots of damage for sure but not greater than even one 9/11: it pulled the trigger, a direct act of treason, leading to the gutting of the Bill of Rights and the destruction of Iraq based on a falsified cause.   Obama continued the plan with further unconstitutional concentration of power and war crimes in Libya, Egypt, Yemen and Syria.  So yeah, Obama is a horror but 9/11 made it possible.

So what?

Not like the Health Insurance they had did anything useful anyway.

Go to doctors/dentists and pay cash, the insurance companies pay them shit..... they would rather take cash and not deal with the paper work.

Got a tooth filled for 70$, beats having some expensive dental plan for hundreds a month, these new chinese dentists are really good to. . . . 123 cash and done. . . no bullshit, was in and out in under an hour, if the same thing was done with insurance the dentist woulda probably made only like... 20$ for a 300$ bill.

I pay for private insurance and my dentist said don't get dental insurance and just save some money every month for an emergency. Its more of that old school feeling dentist with modern technology that's affordable. Filling is around $160 and they only use the white fillings.

If I ever get kicked off my grandfathered in insurance I will be going illegal when I need to see a doctor/ER. And why is the headline saying immigrants? I am sick of trying to decode MSM headlines.

Mon, 09/14/2015 - 13:06 | 6546701 Dre4dwolf

I dont even get the need for health insurance.

If some emergency happens chances are its something like a car accident or some fatal catastrophy.

What are my odds of surviving a fatal catastrophy? and getting to use my health insurance 0_0

If I get sick and die, shit happens half these illegals get treated in the ER for free, if I cant get some Free Stitches in a country I pay taxes in then wtf am I doing paying taxes? and if anything ill pay for the stinkin stitches or crazy glue that shit shut myself.

Now if I got cancer? or some other terminal disease.... well shit happens....

Honestly the list of possible diseases that could afflict me that require expensive procedures are minimal and dont scare me a whole lot.

What could possibly happen?

cancer?

broken leg?

chipped tooth?

cut that needs stitches?

car accident?

big fucking deal.

If I get cancer ill smoke a shit ton of weed and take my chances cutting down sugar intake.

If I break a leg, shit it wouldn't be the first time a human set their own broken leg and tied a splint to it.

Chipped tooth? 200$ big woop 200$ doesnt even buy toast anymore.

Stitches? meet crazy glue and bandaids

car accident? fuck man im more upset about the car than the scrapes and bruises.... and chances are the guy who hit me proly doesnt have insurance anyway why should I lol?

I hate seeing good people suffer needlessly. So, don't do this to yourself. If you get break a leg, need stiches, car accident, go to the hospital and get your treatment.  (I agree about the cancer part though, I would not go for treatment either)

When they send you the bill, tell them to fuck themselves. They will ask again, then you tell them to fuck themselves again.

If it's a small bill, it will get written off, and not even effect your credit score, and if it does effect the score, under the new rules of credit calculation the impact is minimul

If it's a big bill, after the 3rd or 4th time you tell them to fuck themselves, they will start to sweat it and offer you a sweethard deal for pennies on the dollar before they send it to collections.  Take it or not depends on if you need a credit score or not.

I know this from experience, I went through this a few times. Once just recently with my mom, who is supposed to have "full health care" being old, and paying for medi-gap or some other such bullshit, but yet there were still hundreads of dollars of expenses somehow. They wrote it off.

It helps a lot if you live in a state like Florida where even if they force you into bankrupcy somehow, they can't take your house or other shit.

It's an interesting concern you have, and it gets to the heart of why the ACA doesn't actually fix anything at all.  My benefit is awful and my premiums are much higher (and my insurance is through my employer).  These last 2 years have been the first time in my life where I have seriously considered actually NOT getting insurance when I could easily afford it.  Why?

Because the problem remains the same.  If I get injured and get hit with a $20,000 hospital bill, I'm not fucking paying it.  Simple as that.  They can kiss my ass.  Come back with reasonable charges for services rendered and I will.  We didn't address runaway costs and now they're even worse.  60% "Catastrophic" coverage for a 22 year old living alone is bullshit.

Once again, if I were 22, I wouldn't bother paying upwards of $200 a month to get "coverage" that could still leave me with a 5 digit bill if I actually got hurt.  Charge me $10,000 or $10,000,000, it doesn't matter.  I'm not paying it.

So... what did ACA fix?  From what I understand it helps the chronically ill... that's a good thing, but at the cost of forcing young people (who don't NEED insurance) to pay for it, all the while creating a captive customer base for insurance companies who merely dropped coverage and increased premiums to stay wildly profitable.  The only difference is now they have the government footing a large part of the bill and shaking down people that don't participate for money.

It reminds me of the early criminal genius of Pablo Escobar.  In Medellin when he was coming up, he would steal cars.  After a while he would charge protection money to NOT steal your car, and if you didn't pay up, he took it.  He successfully cornered both sides of the market, much like what the ACA does to us.

Mon, 09/14/2015 - 17:34 | 6548229 Freddie

It did not fix anything and was never designed to fix anything.  the HMO's like United Healthcare wrote it.

It is a sop of tens of billions for healthcare, it is designed to take money from the middle class and get them to pay for the healthcare of the poor and illegal aliens period.

Spot on. 12 years work in trauma hospitals, let me give you a recap of one night last week.

12:00am 16 year old pregant female from El Salvador, chest pain. No one in her family speaks English. 4 hours and probably $20k in charges later, they leave AMA. because she feels better now.

0300 am  81 year old female from Zimbabwe, crashes on me. We bring her back, she goes to ICU, three days later I am talking to her son, through a translator of course, and he demands "heroic efforts" at lifesaving, even though she is 81, morbidly obese, hypertension, blah blah blah, all of the usual. Obviously he knows all of his rights. I have been told that for all of the immigrants from every country that there are welcoming committees of their countrymen, that advise them on how to sign up for welfare, housing vouchers, their rights for medical care, legal rights, etc.

0500 54 yr old white male, his father tells me he just got out of the hospital two weeks previously for heroin addiction. He also dies in the ER, but is brought back. Of course, he was practically expired when they brought him in. When I finally quit a week later, both of these patients were still on life support in the hospital, at a total of god know how much cost. Multiply that by the thousands that I am PERSONALLY and anecdotally aware of, and you have your healthcare crisis in  microcosm.

Out of 50 patients I used to see during any given week, maybe 10 have any insurance other than Medicaid, most none at all.

I never knew how many drug addicts and alcoholics there were until I started working in the medical field. Wow, that was an eye opener, especially as none of them ever have to pay for anything. Just call the ambulance, into the ER, and it is all on the taxpayers dime. You think the frequent flyers dont know this? I would hazard a guess that chest pain is the most common complaint seen in ER's. One of my patients clued me in as to why: They will ALWAYS admit you to the hospital with a full workup, i.e. CT's, Nuc med stresses, EKG. A full med workup, for free.

 Aint America wonderful?

I knew 6 or 7 years ago that healthcare was going into the crapper. you work with this stuff all day every day, and you see that NOBODY can afford to pay for these patients health care, it is too extreme. I would hazard a guess that easily 80% of medical care is spent on maybe 10% of the population, and many of the prexisting conditions are caused by smoking, morbid obesity, GSW, drug and alcohol addiction.

IMHO, the difference between now and 30 years ago is that many of these people that have chronic conditions would have died much younger, medicine can keep these people alive another 5-10-15 years, but at an extreme cost.

There is only a certain amount of cash/medical care that can be appropriated by indigents before the system crashes, in  my experience that point is fast approaching.

A complete and total fabrication.  Bath House did everything he could to inflate the numbers under the ACA when it was first rolled out.  Seriously, I worked in health care with local DHHR's and when the ACA first rolled out these agencies were instructed only to take client statements as to citizenship and income and suspended the rule that clients must provide verifications.  Then after the "amazing" numbers were announced, (and Obama memes were all over the internet of him "toasting" the success of the ACA  putting the programs critics "in their place")and the reality of massive fraud seemed certain, word came down from on high that local DHHR's must go back to verifying income, alien status etc.

Bullshit.  They know from being here illegally for years or decades that nothing will be done.  Why worry about alerting the federales when the worst that will happen is they release you to come back for a hearing that everyone knows you wont show up to.  And actually being deported?  Please.  They got the anchor baby so they aint ever gonna get sent back.

And how is buying a SSN to use for employment, that is in use by multiple people not alerting a federal agency?  Because last I heard the IRS does not share this info with the immigratrion people "trying" to find illegal aliens.  Talk aboiut a target rich environment.  "hey Joe, we got the same SSN in use in five different states.  Here's the workplace addresses.  Go check it out and see if any of these are actually the person they claim to be."  Bingo.  done.  I hate this BS about them being afriad to alert the authorities.  Then why the fuck are they all getting drivers licenses now?

"it defies common sense that that many immigrants without legal authorization to be in the country would risk alerting a federal agency by applying for taxpayer-subsidized benefits."

Ah, yes.  But as anyone who works with indigent populations knows, "common sense" is decidedly UN-common among those who are unwilling or unable to support themselves.  There's usually a REASON why they're unemployed.  Stupidity is a common one.  So is dishonesty.  And mental illness, including a lack of "reality testing", is up there.

So please.  Talk about "common sense" to the girls taking SNAP payments from two different states and using their cards back-to-back in the same store.  Or to the ones who file for child support payments when HE has court-ordered custody. PLEASE.  Until someone invents a genuine "smart pill", we will always have people trying to milk the system so STUPIDLY that it defies belief.

Another problem with immigrants is that many of them really, honestly, don't understand that they aren't eligible merely by virtue of showing up.  They've been fed propaganda (deliberately put out by the U.S.!) that says American streets are paved with gold, and nobody goes hungry or gets hurt or ill without being cared for by the state.  Many, even, are from countries where "asylum-seekers" are automatically paid a government stipend for sitting on their cans waiting for a court hearing to see if they actually ARE asylum-seekers.  The U.S. has fewer social benefits than any other developed nation; immigrants from Nigeria expect better as their natural rights, and work-study students from Sweden and Germany go home in a huff after six months.  So a lot of these people probably AREN'T eligible, but think that they ought to be.  And they can spend an hour of the intake worker's time haranging them in broken English about how wrong it is that they aren't being treated like royalty.  I've been the one on the other end of that conversation.

Obamacare was NEVER about helping poor people with no money.  To the government, they are a sinkhole for money.  Obamacare only has to make the impression that it's working, which it's not.  Obamacare is more about fleecing what's left of the middle class for additional revenue.
