Without Government, Who Would Force A Men's Barbershop To Cut Women's Hair?
Submitted by Ryan McMaken via The Mises Institute,
A barbershop that is set up specifically to serve men, must now pay $750 dollars after a Pennsylvania state investigation into "discriminatory" practices on the part of the barbershop owners.
The owner, John Interval, was fined $750 after he declined to cut a woman's hair. According to Interval:
"I didn’t really consider it so much a discrimination thing as – it’s a barbershop... for guys. You know, I’m not opposed to doing women’s hair...just not in this shop. I don’t even have [the equipment] to do women’s hair." Interval said.
The potential customer, who was forced to endure the hardship of finding an establishment that cuts women's hair, filed a complaint with the state, and following a taxpayer-funded investigation and interview period with the barbershop owners, the state levied a fine against the shop.
The shop will pay the fine, of course, because to refuse to pay would likely bring armed government agents to the establishment to serve further warrants and additional methods of state coercion including fines, lawsuits, and possible imprisonment and/or impoverishment for the owner.
An alternative to this, of course, would be to allow shop owners to dispose of their own private property as they see fit. In the United States however, a business agreement (i.e., a verbal or written contract) does not require the consent of both parties. Instead, state and federal governments employ armies of government agents to force private individuals to enter into contracts where only one party has consented to participate.
Thus, in this manner, the government carries out its essential role in mandating hair cuts (or cake baking, or wedding photography) under threat of fines and other penalties.

This is what happens when an entity is in debt up past their eyeballs. Will dream up creative ways to bring in new revenue. These state guys/gals get 5 stars. Look for more and more and more and more of this until the system is reset.
Couple million more of these fines and they will fix I-81 through Scranton.
lol. Made myself laugh on that one.
pods
They should have given her a man's cut. End of story..
nothing a flat-top couldn't fix.
I would suggest simply doing a poor job, not something horrible and obvious, but then, I would be hard pressed to be able to choose between a five hundered dollar cut and a five dollar one given todays styles. Like high dollar jeans with holes in them, things ain't what the ought to be.
This guy is not very bright. There was an easy way of dealing with this one. First, calmly explain that your place of business is a barbershop that cuts mens hair, no offense, just "we aren't qualified to cut your hair". The woman will think you're mansplaining (it's in the dictionary if you're unfamiliar with the word) and demand her hair be cut. You try once again to reason with her (knowing that is futile, but doing so anyway). She continues to demand justice and a haircut. You absolutely BUTCHER the womans hair all while apologizing and explaining you do not cut womens hair. When she throws an absolute fit in front of all your customers you tell her the haircut is free and apologize over and over again. When she leaves, you and the other fellas all have a good chuckle. Why is that so hard?!
Yeah that way she sues you for malicious intent over the bad hair cut. And then $750 would be chump change for what she and her slimy lawyer would demand as restitution.
I have five witnesses that saw me explain over and over again that I do not know how to cut womens' hair prior to the first snip. She insisted your honor.
And in the real world we all dream of you'd win. But here in Bizzaro world, tahdah, you'd get shit on.
See this is the point you stand up and be a man. Refuse to pay.
Course then they'll come for you with guns and riot gear.
I will just take a wild guess and say if you actually need a license to cut hair, that license involves being able to cut both genders' hair. Now with the 100's of other genders that license is probably void. But who knows maybe you need to get reeducated on cutting peoples' hair who think they are attack choppers. I kept asking myself, today, to wake up from this nightmare.
You would still get sued.
I can smell your asshole as you bend over.
One $12 flat top coming right up.
LOL!
...or a 5 year old boy haircut - a Jerry Seinfeld special.
"Give me liberty or give me...well, I was going to say death, but that seems like a little much. How 'bout, 'Give me liberty or don't give me liberty - whatever, I'm fine with either one.'"
-Most Americans
Give me Liberty or give me a haircut! We've all taken a haircut we don';t want
Give me liberty or give me living death.
People need to realize the freedom of association and private property rights extend to businesses. Does that mean if a business didn't want to serve whites, they could do that? Well, actually...yes. That's Constitutional. Is it the right thing to do? No but we can stop giving a business money if we don't agree with their policies. We can also use freedom of speech to alert others as to what you didn't like about the building. But using the force of govt to force your will is not freedom. An individual using a group of individuals or govt to force an individual to lose their rights is TYRANNY. If this barbershop didn't want to serve women, it's constitutional. I hope more people continue to stand up to this. If the woman had come in wanting a man's haircut and they still didn't want to serve her, that's up to the business. This is like the baker who didn't want to make the homosexual wedding cake. Since businesses are our private property because we start them with our own capitol, then we should be able to have freedom of association. If something violates our First Amendment religious rights, it is constitutional to oppose making the sale that is morally repugnant to us. Forcing a business to serve whomever the govt forces the business owner to serve is like a govt telling a person to accept people into their private home that the govt must force them to take in. It's about private property rights. Force is not freedom. People need to learn as much as they can about their rights so they can fight back. This is our fight. Let not our children and grandchildren say we didn't care.
Sorry, but your reasoning fails. As a white guy who grew up in the segregated South, I well remember the 'colored' water fountains, rest rooms, and that black folk could be discriminated in just about any way a white business owner felt like. Blacks often could not find a hotel room or a restaurant when traveling. If you are going to open your doors to the public, then you must serve the public. Certainly, you can have things like dress codes, but restrictions have to be applied equally. As noted above, there are many ways to discourage certain clientele, but you need to be smart about it.
Oh, and a public business is NOTHING like a private home.
So the only way to have a just and moral society is through the force of government?
Are we going to acknowledge the blowback from using force to impose a morality?
If society does not reflect its people but the elite choosing to run it, is it really moral?
Our government had the choice of pursuing higher moral goals through education and good example and instead picked their most favorite method...the force of law.
Please give me some examples of "a just and moral" society. Or, even one.
Just and moral society. That's a hoot, and to answer the question, yes, the only way for black people in America to throw off the yokes of slavery, and attain a semblance of the rights every citizen is entitled to, is/was by the actions of government. Like it or not, it is true.
I am not talking about morality, anyway. I am talking about the rule of law and individual rights. Your rights end where mine begin, and vice versa.
Government doesn't want to allow you to decide things...Nazis didn't think for themselves...they followed orders!
Stop using NAZI in a derogative way. NAZIs have dome many good things. Great American general & patriot George Patton said so.
Send her to a hair SALOON!
https://youtu.be/XuRozv0IXDQ
Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope!!!! I would not cut the woman's hair under any penalty. I would close up shop and open up under a new name. If I was forced to actually do it, I would force my scissors into her neck while I was cutting just to watch her bleed slowley.
Sweeney is that you?
Maybe installing a urinal in the open hair-cutting area will qualify it as a mens bathroom into which no woman may legally enter?
Depends how said woman identifies, though.

Only way to satisfactorily resolve this problem is to nationalize the barber industry.
You mean socialize.
Methinks the Horseman might start up an Uber barber shop franchise.
And then refuse to cut women's hair.
Funny, I was just about to sue Tampax cause they still don't sell men's tampons.
Go into Victoria's secret and ask where the men's section is.
Demand they sell you men's underwear.
"Men's section" - that's such a gender stereotyping patriarchal slur, you misogynistic pig!
Thank you, luckily I believe you have the right to your opinion, sorry you don't have the same respect.
Wow!
I can't believe that actually went over your head. Sorry if you are having such a tough day.
I got the sarc. Was giving an example of how to talk to trolls. Not that I think your a troll, alot of your posts are hilarious.
I'd only do it if I could trim the lower head too...
Obviously, a flash-mob of males need to go into every woman's hairdresser in Pennsylvania and demand to have their hair cut.
Shit, it is too expansive.
The .gov overreach is outrageous as usual.
However, I think the barber shop handled this wrong. You want to force me to provide a service by which I apply my training, skills, and experience on you? SURE, I'll give you a haircut you'll never forget!
Same with baking a cake. I'll be very happy to bake you a cake, with no extra charge for those special sauces you just love.
Ladies want to use the men's bathroom? How about a nice circular facial spa with a free mint?
So the Mises Institute has moved on from the minimum wage issue to the hair-cutting issue.
Wake me when Mises chooses to cover WS corruption and Banksters selling the country down the drain, while we get a steady diet of Minimum wage articles and ones like this....
Wake you up? You mean 25 years ago when they were the only ones holding conferences on the fed and Wall Street corruption?
Glad they got that solved and went on to the larger issues.
Why don't you wander over to the Mises site and start reading all the said articles, fucktard? See you in 8 years, when you've finished.
I still go to a barber for a haircut. As a yute in the 70s I remember my barber at the time telling the long haired freaky people to go somewhere else for a haircut.
Mrs. pods cuts mine. I do remember Vito as a kid though. He had a spin when he changed sides.
He also tended to rub his nuts on you during the cut.
<shudder>

"The owner, John Interval, was fined $750. Then 30 minutes later, fined 750$. Then 30 minutes later, fined 750$. Then 30 minutes later, 750$".
See what I did there?
4:20, bro!
Politicans no longer represent the people; they represent Big Corporations and special interest groups. That's why I will vote for Trump. I have no idea what he will do as president but it cannot be worse then Hitlery or another Bush.
I am not that sure about Trump. He is too sleazy POS.
Don't you people have something more important to get outraged about? Don't tell me this is an important symbol, blah blah blah...
"Don't you people have something more important to get outraged about?"
Don't you?
He should've sat her down in the chair and then gone after her mop with the clippers and a #2 guard for the neckline and over the ears, blended up to a #3 guard for the top, then maybe some product in her freshly cut hair to spike it up and make her look nice and masculine. The entire time he was cutting her hair, he could've talked to her about sports, hunting, fishing, or any other guy stuff.....maybe even ripped a couple farts and said the burrito he had for lunch was biting back.
You want equality? There you go, twat.
People need to start getting creative in their fight against this shit.
Mises institute likes to pursue narrative that “all government bad.”
The headline tells the story:
Without Government, Who Would Force A Men's Barbershop To Cut Women's Hair?
A more rational question would be, “How far has government stepped outside of its role?”
This question then forces people to define government’s role.
To my mind, the answer is as small as possible, down low as possible (state and county), and only in the places where it belongs.
By any measure, government belongs in inelastic markets, as gov’t is most efficient producer there.
My opinion also, is that for private credit money has buried rents as part of its structure, making it a slavery system.
Gold and metal money has worked in a few places in the past, but it requires taxing it out of the supply (a head tax or census tax was used in past). This then implies government – making a circular argument.
Venice initially allowed metal and bank ledger money to be equal, and hence all gold was to be deposited in the state bank. Venice ledger money was NOT CREDIT, it was stored wealth donated by the rich from previous generations.
When a person left Venice they were allowed to take their gold with them. If Venice lost gold to other economies, it was always recalled by exporting surplus goods.
Hanseatic league would take gold out of circulation by census taxes, or also by re-denominating their money. They would make an old coin illegal, and then recast new ones. As gold likes to hide and be stored (making it deflationary), this was a way of forcing it out and into circulation, so metal could fulfill role as exchange medium.
Hanseatic League got taken down by Italian actions via credit banking issuance. And yes, it was not Jews running these credit operations and taking rents – this time – it was Italians.
(I’ve been accused of hammering Jewry a little too hard – so here is a notable exception.)
The role of government is to enforce the will of the Ruling Class. Always has been, always will be. It is doing the job it was designed for.
Government is evil, and it can never be fixed.
The role of govt is to extort, kidnap, and kill. It's a protection racket, indistinguishable from the Mafia. So yes, "all government bad" [sic]
By any measure, government belongs in inelastic markets, as gov’t is most efficient producer there.
My opinion also, is that for private credit money has buried rents as part of its structure, making it a slavery system.
"Private credit money" isn't a problem so long as the government are not forcing people to use it to pay tax. In other words - there's no reason why people in a free market shouldn't use whatever they want for money: phyzz PMs, interest-bearing debt coupons, PM derivatives, you name it. It's no problem as long as individuals can refuse to take it for payment, or at the exchange rate of their choosing.
Gold and metal money has worked in a few places in the past, but it requires taxing it out of the supply (a head tax or census tax was used in past). This then implies government – making a circular argument.
WTF does "requires taxing it out of the supply" mean? The government taxes land/transactions/income/head/census whatever, then just spends it back into the economy when it buys goods and services. There's no issue there.
We don't need governments hoarding gold and then recasting it as a way to promote economic activity. That just incentivizes people to buy investment goods instead of depositing their money in banks... similar to ZIRP now.
Communists don't expect quality.
Give the bull queers a crew cut.
If they don't like it, tell them you're an unemployed dentist.
My barber only accepts new customers after an interview and only by appointment. Another barber in the same establishment only cuts women's hair and refused to cut mine when my barber was out sick.
The point is, this barber would have to spend a lot of time and money to defend his position. The law should state that the plaintiff pays all costs and legal expenses of the defendant if they lose the case. This would stop a lot of these frivoulous law suits.
Pre service questionnaires are going to become rampant. It is the only way a business owner can defend himself. Price lists are going to come down and be replaced by individual quotations. The net result is going to be even more restrictive to those looking for gay wedding cakes or other nonsense. Anything not in a box, with a fixed price, is going to require more paperwork and special price quotations.
a prenup for a haircut? are you a lawyer?
fucking silly..
But reminds me of the best barber shop in san diego.. all asian chicks.. they would give you a complimentary shoulder rub(while saying shit like "ooh big muscle").. after the cut.. they look you in the eyes and say.. iny tang els sur.
i was always too chicken shit/cheap to check out the upgrade menu.. they cut good hair too..
no doubt.. the feds would fuck that place to given the chance.
Yes, I know the mantra that both parties are the same. In many ways they are. However, this kind of shit ONLY happens with Democrats.
What woman in her right mind would want a man who does not cut women's hair for a living give her a hair cut? NONE. It was someone looking to make a point. Next time he should cut it and the woman will get the haircut she deserves.
I wonder if the owner can counter-sue the state for forced usage of property under eminent domain or any other such laws on the books of Penn that might entitle the owner to compensation when the state assumes control over an asset. Their premises, equipment, and expertise were effectively seized without compensation, and in fact fined against it. Seems like that would be a good way to go. They wouldn't even have to address the "discrimination" part of the matter again. Simply that, the state, effectively seized their property and forced a particular function against the owner's wishes.
To be more precise, how does this differ from forcing a landowner to sell their property for public accommodation of a new highway? The effects are precisely the same. So if the state is requiring it, the state should pay for it.
At some point, people are just going to stop complying because they don't care anymore. That's when Rome falls.
Exactly. It's pretty much getting to where even the government can't keep track of all of its own rules -- well, there ARE three different layers of government, and some of the rules don't match, and most bureaucrats only know the specifics of about three laws that they're in charge of enforcing. But funding is tight. As there's less and less money, there will be less enforcement of arcane provisions, because you know something? The BUREAUCRATS don't really care, either. And the cops certainly don't. So Norquist still has the right idea: starve the Beast. Cut off the funds, and no matter what's written on the books, they can't do anything about it.
I would have shaved their heads or given them mowhawks and said "Oops, I told you I wasn't any good at cutting women's hair"
In my state - in the 1970s - it was against the law for women to cut men's hair. The woman that was cutting my hair went to court to be able to continue doing so.
That was probably some obsolete morality law from the 19th century meant to prevent barbershops being used as a front for prostitution.
Until recently, my guy (Turkish) had an Iranian woman cutting hair. Nobody seemed to mind. Guess there's nothing about that in the Q'aran.
Personally, I don't like women cutting my hair. They're too fussy, take too long and always try to make you look like James Dean. (good luck with that)
But what about gender "other" ... what about them?
Remember, the only ones who are allowed to define and enforce boundaries are the ones who say that any existing boundaries are unfair.
The new boundaries are so that people can feel "safe" from such "violence" as an unkind word, or exclusion for any traditional reason, or freedom of association and related disassociation, or even the self-realization that they are a narcissistic weirdo with a chip on the shoulder.
My barber kicked a woman out of his shop in Texas. Why? He didn't give a reason to her. But he told me "my license is for men. I can't cut women's hair. I'll be fined and lose my license." There's a difference between a barber and a cosmetologist.
The Social Justice Warriors(SJW's) need to be stopped, by force if necessary. Nothing is free from their guerilla activism. God help you if you own a business or run a club. The SJW's are tearing down everything, and what will be left in its place is more dystopian than I can fathom.
I would have given her the Bull Dyke special.
I think the barber took the wrong approach, he could have really enjoyed fucking up her head, and collect the fee for doing so.
He missed an opportunity for mysogyny. These small business people are really missing out, cake bakers, photographers, now barbers.
They need to ask themselves, "what would Sun Tzu do" [tm if applicable]
A number 3, 2 on the sides and back.
What more could you need?
he thought he was the man in the situation, and he wasn't going to do something he didn't feel comfortable with. probably a nice guy, so the man hating bitch fucked him.
All publicity is good publicity.
Since the US Open prize money is the same for women and men, how come the women matches only play 3 sets. Double fucking standard.
3 sets is too much. 3 games would be too much. You can't watch a female match with the audio on because every time they hit the ball they grunt like they are dying from terminal constipation. Sharapova is the worst.
You didn't build that barber shop!
We have Reverse Sharia Law now. Women get what they want or the police state intervenes. It really is a potential death sentence just dealing with women now.
As I see it this guy was damned if he cut her hair and damed if he did not cut it. If the barber does not cut her hair the customer goes to the State EOC regulatory authority and reports him for discrimination. If he whips out a bowl and gives her a Moe Howard special (Moe Howard is Moe of the Three Stooges which used to come on television before the current PC regime took over and decided the Stooges and all Looney Tunes cartoons were bad for kids and should be done away with) then she would hire a contingency lawyer, the ACLU or both, to sue the barber for the price of the bad haircut and $5mm for the emotional distress that the haircut caused her to experience. Since the customer is a card carrying member of the Obama Free Shit Army she has nothing to lose since the taxpayers are footing the bill for her food, her home and her cell phone. In the interim the barber which has been in business for 30 plus years is now being harassed by the LBGT community, Feminist Nazis and the State regulators and labeled as a man that discriminates against women (surprised that they have not set up some sort of offender registry for this yet). What the Obama Free Shit Army complaintant fails to realize is the barber pays business tax as well as income tax which pays for the free shit that the woman is receiving from the government. Now that she has forced him out of business there will not be as many people to pay for her to get free shit any longer. Why no one in the community government told her that she was a moron is unkown...probably afraid of lawyers.
Just saw what town this was in...a suburb or Pittsburgh, PA. Pittsburgh the festering boil on the backside of humanity where the denizens all believe that socialism is the ultimate Nirvana. She pobably looks like a guy already. The majority of the women in Pittsburgh are tattooed, morbidly obese and have trouble using helping verbs and conjunctions when attempting to speak English. They need to nuke the place and start over. Most DEFINITELY an FSA member since about 90% of the population in and around Pittsburgh is on the dole.
What would Caitland do ?
Star in a Kabuki performance?
This is not discrimination. I can see from the video he thoroughly specialize on mens cuts and is clearly very good at it. Its a different technique and requirements than womens hair would require. Maybe he dont even have good enough skill for womens cut if he did not practice enough on those. I have seen such specialized barbers in europe. There are also shops specializing on womens clothes only, is that discrimination? This is getting silly.
What about a woman who wants a man's cut? Should a barbershop cut it if her hair is short like a mans?
Tough question but I would say that even short hair women style is still different from men. Besides, if barber specialize on mans cut and accept only short hair women additionally, other women would consider it discrimination. Only some women can get a cut and others not? That also doesnt seem right, so its probably for the better to make general gender exclusion.
My 4 year old cuts her own hair... I offered to cut hers like mine and she burst into tears... I wonder if they're related.
This is screwed. I asked my hairdresser once if he did eyebrows, he told me no, he was not good at it. I used his female friend who was. This is normal business. He keeps me as a client because he had my best interests at heart.
We should have no say in this guy's business unless he is hurting someone. Only then do we sue or arrest him.
Meanwhile, these rules get made to remedy some wrong (discrimination) and this ruling fails even on that front.
This is not the spirit intended by this law, it is harassment. She is pressing this to harass him. If I ask you for a service and you think you will not do it well, I should use my good judgement and move on. End of it.
I dropped my son off at Sportscuts to get a haircut. I asked them if they had anyone who did women because I needed my bangs trimmed and I was there. They had one person who had worked on women at a shop in the past but they were not comfortable giving me a haircut because that is not what their shop does. I was cool with that, went on my way, came back and got my son in 20 minutes. If they are uneasy, they will do a bad job. No way was I going to press the point.
What's the problem?
Hillary always goes to the barber's for her bull-dyke buzz-cut (and armpit braiding)
Don't let her assortment of wigs fool you - that's just playing nicey-nice for the campaign.
Fucking piece of shit left wingers will not be happy until Curves is filled with creepy guys who go there to stare at asses.
You think women won't get their hair cut because of this? Idiocy. Opportunitists, male or female, will always fill a hole. No need for any sort of intervention whatsoever but it's how middlemen justify their existence.
This cunt needs to be bitch slapped
This bitch needs to be cunt slapped.
Next tax scheme after gender equality fine aem, laws. If you own a dog and it barks it is suing you and the state can fine you $1,500.
When I had my full blown Mullet going, the only person I trusted to take care of the 'Kentucky Waterfall', was a pretty hot MILF, who worked at a beauty salon. She was a barrel racer too and had quite the rack. So it was nice to lay back and get my hair shampoo'd in the sink, with warm water, while all that woman, was hanging over my mug. Plus, the hotties at the manicure desks were all lined up as well, but this place did cater to both sexes and nobody had a problem with it.
Caveat, I did get turned down twice, by other salons. I walked into one and it was solid 'Sisters'. Whoops! Backed out graciously... Second time, the women were reluctant to even deal with me, so I left, no hard feelings.
Okay. I assume then that I can make a choice as to whether I want to use the men's room or the lady's room.
Let's have at it Gents. No more "discrimination". Just remember to put the seat back down.
Let's be honest men. With what she is packing in her leather panties that 3 triangular inches that all women pack already rules the world. Argue all you want. Once read somewhere something about the face that launched a thousand ships or some such , However guys remember this while you are in search for a long term deerhuntress ! Beauty is only skin deep but ugly's to the bone, beauty slowly fades away but ugly holds its own.
Always keep one eye on your bobber. I won't rant on state of the nation.
I just had to pay 550 dollars for a city permit to install an 1900 dollar patio door. I am currently very unhappy so I will guard my mouth. Good night alll.
Who cares, just cut their hair. Business is business. They certaily won't come back if you give them an accidental bowl cut.
I only see one problem.
Two women walk in together or a few minutes apart.
They start talking.
POSTAL POSTAL POSTAL
Where's my fucking filleting knife?
Once we are all "equal" we will not need "rights". The remaining, meager true natural rights will be bred out of the herd.
"Rights" are not there to correct the "wrongs" that the herd has suffered. More so to make the herd into a single type of animal.
For the sake of equality? For the sake of subjugation. However, A = A, A does not = B.
2 + 2 = 4, not 5.
Equality is for equals.
When women do stupid shit like this, give them a case of chin nuts, with DEEZ NUTS!
Vote Deez Nuts 2016!
Now people have a precedent (in Pennsylvania's law):
Men should go to women hairdressers and ask to cut their hair there, go to women-only places and ask to get the services or goods sold there.

Come on, PA male residents, do you want accept to be discriminate against by these misandrist women?
or would you do something for yourself and your self respect.
