Ron Paul: Congress Is 'Fiddling' While The Economy Burns

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Ron Paul via The Ron Paul Institute for Peace & Prosperity,

Reports that the official unemployment rate has fallen to 5.1 percent may appear to vindicate the policies of easy money, corporate bailouts, and increased government spending. However, even the mainstream media has acknowledged that the official numbers understate the true unemployment rate. This is because the government’s unemployment figures do not include the 94 million Americans who have given up looking for work or who have settled for part-time employment. John Williams of Shadow Government Statistics estimates the real unemployment rate is between 23 and 24 percent.

Disappointingly, but not surprisingly, few in Washington, DC acknowledge that America’s economic future is endangered by excessive spending, borrowing, taxing, and inflating. Instead, Congress continues to waste taxpayer money on futile attempts to run the economy, run our lives, and run the world.

For example, Congress spent the majority of last week trying to void the Iranian nuclear agreement. This effort was spearheaded by those who think the US should waste trillions of dollars on another no-win Middle East war. Congressional war hawks ignore how America’s hyper-interventionist foreign policy feeds the growing rebellion against the dollar’s world reserve currency status. Of course, the main reason many are seeking an alternative to the dollar is their concern that, unless Congress stops creating — and the Federal Reserve stops monetizing — massive deficits, the US will experience a Greek-like economic crisis.

Despite the clear need to reduce federal spending, many Republicans are trying to cut a deal with the Democrats to increase spending. These alleged conservatives are willing to lift the “sequestration” limits on welfare spending if President Obama and congressional democrats support lifting the “sequestration” limits on warfare spending. Even sequestration's miniscule, and largely phony, cuts are unbearable for the military-industrial complex and the rest of the special interests that control our government.

The only positive step toward addressing our economic crisis that the Senate may take this year is finally holding a roll call vote on the Audit the Fed legislation. Even if the audit legislation lacks sufficient support to overcome an expected presidential veto, just having a Senate vote will be a major step forward.

Passage of the Audit the Fed bill would finally allow the American people to know the full truth about the Fed’s operations, including its deals with foreign central banks and Wall Street firms. Revealing the full truth about the Fed will likely increase the number of Americans demanding that Congress end the Fed's monetary monopoly. This suspicion is confirmed by the hysterical attacks on and outright lies about the audit legislation spread by the Fed and its apologists.

Every day, the American people see evidence that, despite the phony statistics and propaganda emanating from Washington, high unemployment and rising inflation plague the economy. Economic anxiety has led many Americans to support an avowed socialist’s presidential campaign. Perhaps more disturbingly, many other Americans are supporting the campaign of an authoritarian crony capitalist. If there is a major economic collapse, many more Americans — perhaps even a majority — will embrace authoritarianism. An economic crisis could also lead to mob violence and widespread civil unrest, which will be used to justify new police state measures and crackdowns on civil liberties.

Unless the people demand an end to the warfare state, the welfare state, and fiat money, our economy will continue to deteriorate until we are faced with a major crisis. This crisis can only be avoided by rejecting the warfare state, the welfare state, and fiat money. Those of us who know the truth must redouble our efforts to spread the ideas of liberty.

It's funny he mentions the Iran thing when his son is actively opposing it. Ron needs to teach his son a thing or two. While I highly doubt anything done by Obama and Kerry isn't without it's flaws, anything that prevents another wasteful war that kills thousands more Americans, puts us another few trillion in debt, and results in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of mostly innocent people in Iran is a good thing. Anyone still listening to the same fuckheads who lied us into Iraq trying to get us into a shooting war with Iran needs their head examined.

Why do people find it so hard to believe that the good cop/bad cop routine also exists in politics? Not to say that what Ron says is wrong; it isn't. He just doesn't go far enough in explaining what is really going on with the global currency BS. The link above describes what I think is going on very well.

Carpenter1, no one in his right mind believes Trump is anything else than a clown. For the voters, he is only a way of showing discontent with the Republicans corruption and hypocrisy.
Even a Mickey Mouse GOP candidacy would have achieved the same results.

Amen. Ron Paul is a mason, lots of picks online of him giving the masonic handshake. His wife and kids are listed as masonic members, and although they've hidden his membership well, does anyone believe a guy's wife and kids would be masons while he's not?

I agree 100%. After Ron left congress, there was no one else. Rand has been a huge fucking disappointment. There are many, like Andrew napolitano, who know both of them and say that rand is in agreement with his father on nearly everything, but then you hear him talk and only 1 of two things is possible- rand is just shamelessly pandering to the republican base because he wants to be president so bad he will lie about his beliefs, or those people are wrong about rand being like his father and he is just another garden variety republican.

AIN'T it the TRUTH!

Funny how when lots of other people get blamed, Congress seems to escape its fair share of responsibility.

Things won't change ... until Americans get serious about sending honest people to Washington C.

I Love This Man!     Several years ago, while on the Campaign trail, he made an appearance at my Alma Mater.   I arrived a little late and found myself in the "overflow" room where the sound was supposed to be piped in. A few bits came through but the sound system was screwed up and we basically heard nothing. After finishing his main speech in the Silver Eagle Suite, staffers brought our plight to his attention. He made time in his busy schedule to come through a side door into a small, hastily cordoned off area and deliver an abbreviated version of this speech. He spoke for about fifteen minutes, almost bringing tears to my eyes just knowing how unlikely his remedies were to be implemented in our country.

He was, Hands Down, The Most Inspirational Speaker I Have Ever Seen in My Life!

One of the biggest lies told about the US system of government is that the three branches are co-equal. They are not.

Congress can fire anybody and everybody they want-- including themselves if that be their desire.

No other branch holds that ultimate threat in its quiver.

They have the power to change things if they so desire, simply by getting rid of people in the judiciary and executive branch that do not see things their way.

The replacements (and survivors) would quickly adopt a different attitude.

They are the most culpable, not the least culpable, branch of government since all of the designated powers of the republic ultimately rest in their hands.

There is no way the fed will ever be audited because the it'll collapse the house of cards.  We'd see all the secret illegal accounts given to everyone the fed and gov need to bribe and blackmail.  I wouldn't be surprised if representatives actually have individual accounts with millions/billions in them, tax-free, untraceable, in multiple currencies, and maybe even PMs.

.Gov gave itself the authority to borrow against all property in the US.  They've probably rehypothecated the national park system to various tyrannical regimes around the world for stupid, short-term political favors.  Mineral rights are likely squandered, too, and the quantity of fiat is far higher than reports indicate.  The fed is probably the broker of all the shady shit that .gov desparately wants to keep out of the limelight.

Think of the worst possible scenario imaginable, multiply it times ten, and it's almost close to how bad it is.

God bless Ron Paul. The way I see it, we missed our last opportunity at redemption when he lost the last presidential race. Ron's article is overly optimistic. The economy WILL collapse, we WILL get an increased police state, reduced civil liberties and an authoritarian government. Any hope that "the people" will wake up at the last minute and choose freedom is absurd, they're sheep. That battle was lost years ago. All you can do now is prepare yourself and your own family as best you can. We're about to enter a house of horrors that George Orwell could not have imagined in his worst nightmare.
