14 Year Old Texan, Ahmed Mohammed, Arrested For Home-Made Clock Because "It Looks Like A Bomb"

Tyler Durden's picture

A perfect storm of Islamophobia and technophobia (as Wired.com's Marcus Wohlsen so eloquently put it) has erupted in Texas where high-school freshman Ahmed Mohamed was arrested Monday after bringing a homemade digital clock to MacArthur High. A teacher at the Irving school exclaimed "it looks like a bomb,"  resulting in a call to police. By mid-afternoon, police were leading the boy out of school in handcuffs and taking him to juvenile detention on suspicion of making a "hoax bomb." As Mike Krieger sums up so perfectly, America is a deeply fallen nation.

In his own words...

As Liberty Blitzkrieg's Mike Krieger details,

Police detained a 14-year-old Muslim boy after a teacher at his North Texas high school decided that a homemade clock he proudly brought to class looked like a bomb, according to school and police officials.

The family of Ahmed Mohamed said the boy was suspended for three days from MacArthur High School in the Dallas suburb of Irving after taking the clock to class on Monday.

The boy makes his own radios, repairs his own go-kart and on Sunday spent about 20 minutes before bedtime assembling a clock using a circuit board, power supply wired to a digital display and other items, The Dallas Morning News reported.

– From the ABC News article: Muslim Boy, 14, Detained for Making Clock Mistaken for Bomb

America is a deeply fallen nation. I don’t know how obvious it has to become before people come to grips and start to do something about it.

We haven’t decayed into this tepid abyss of immorality and decadence because of illegal immigrants, no matter what a two-bit demagogue preaching to desperate hordes infected with what Huxley referred to as herd-poisoning tells you. It’s entirely own our fault. We’ve allowed criminals and professional crony capitalists take to total control of the reins of power, and rather than fight against them, we aspire to become them. We have allowed them to scare us into submission by exploiting the tragic events of 9/11 to consolidate the world’s wealth into an increasingly small number of hands. Immigrants didn’t do this. We did, or at the very least, we allowed it to happen.

I harbor nostalgia for the days when Americans were merely ridiculed as being obese, McDonalds eating slobs ignorant of world affairs. We aren’t viewed with this combination of amusement and endearment any longer. Rather, the world now shudders with a mixture of disgust and horror in contemplation of what we have become. A decadent, clownish, wealth obsessed, corrupt, aggressive, war-mongering multitude of brainwashed imperial subjects. Worse yet, it’s not just ignorance anymore. There appears to be a idolization of anti-intellectualism running rampant, something on full display as of late with the ascendence of Donald Trump as a uniquely American strongman-savior. Not only is this stupid, it’s pathetic and dangerous.

America used to celebrate its eccentrics. The strange, creative, iconoclasts who, when allowed to, will generally change society for the better. In modern America, we put them in handcuffs. To illustrate this point, here’s an excerpt from my 2013 post, Remembering Internet Prodigy and Activist Aaron Swartz (1986-2013): Your Life is an Inspiration:

Despite this horrible tragedy, based on the outpouring of disgust even from the mainstream media, I am optimistic that Aaron’s death might actually represent a turning point.  An event that can shake people out of their normalcy bias and force them to accept the sad reality they have been loath to admit.  That our criminal “justice” system has been completely and totally co-opted by a ruthless, greedy and immoral oligarch class that seems hell bent on throwing the American public into a neo-feudal nightmare of debt slavery and ignorance.

Aaron was a treasure and a gift to the species and only a very sick and dying culture would have led to his premature end.  We must look at ourselves in the mirror, accept this reality and change it immediately.

Unfortunately, not much has changed in these two and a half years. Our populace remains as fearful, paranoid and slavish as ever. More destitute, more desperate and more confused than ever before. Feverishly searching for a weak group to blame, and self-satisfied with their slobbering support for a casino billionaire who has provided an easy target. This is the culture that attacked and killed Aaron Swartz, and it is the culture that led to the arrest of a brilliant 14-year-old boy for building a homemade clock.

From ABC News:

The school district said in a statement that Ahmed was detained by police. Irving police spokesman James McLellan told the Morning News that police are determining whether to file a charge of making a hoax bomb.

This is so typical of the U.S. power structure. Rather than admitting fault for traumatizing a little boy for being particularly smart, they regroup in order to charge him with an invented crime.

So what’s the lesson here learned by Ahmed? That inventiveness and eccentricity are not only unappreciated in America, but that exhibiting such traits is dangerous. In contrast, when members of the so-called “elite” commit systemic theft and embark upon countless unnecessary and devastating wars abroad, they are rewarded with unimaginable wealth. This is the incentive structure in modern America, and is precisely  why the country has morphed into little more than a neo-feudal imperial Banana Republic.

For a little more, here’s some coverage from the New York Times:

A high school student in Texas whose hobby was inventing thought he had a unique idea for a project: to build his own clock.

But the effort landed him in handcuffs and juvenile detention, accused of making a hoax bomb.

When Ahmed Mohamed, 14, brought the clock to MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., on Monday, an engineering teacher suggested that he not show the invention to other teachers. But it beeped during an English class, prompting Ahmed to show his English teacher what it was, according to an account in The Dallas Morning News.

In a video posted on the newspaper’s website, Ahmed described how he was taken from school by the police. “They took me to a room filled with five officers,” he said. “They interrogated me, and searched through my stuff and took my tablet and my invention.”

He said he was fingerprinted, and mug shots were taken at a juvenile detention center. He was released when his parents came to retrieve him.

“It made me feel like a criminal,” he said. He was suspended for three days.

“It could reasonably be mistaken as a device if left in a bathroom or under a car. The concern was, what was this thing built for? Do we take him into custody?”

Read this line again and again and again until you get it. “The concern was, what was this thing built for?”

Perhaps it was built out of curiosity and passion, or perhaps it was just the spontaneous product of a creative and brilliant mind. So what? Why does it have to be built for a specific purpose? Instead of celebrating such a bright young boy, we criminalize him. It’s a symptom of a very sick and twisted society.

In his classic novel 1984, George Orwell wrote:

If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face — forever.”

He was wrong. It actually, it looks like this.

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.05.19 AM

Ahmed’s arrest occurred in Texas. A state so proud of it’s small government stance, yet bizarrely ground zero for a multitude of statist practices.

Unfucking believable. When I was a schoolboy I made an alarm clock from a kit (Heath). I guess I would be considered a terrorist today-- not a kid wanting to learn how electonics worked.

Even with an incompetent lawyer, Ahmed woud stand to make a serious about of ching off the mentally impaired School Board and cops.

Hopefully, he'll get a good enough lawyer that his entire college tuition is paid for and he has plenty left over for hookers and blow on every Spring Break.

I assume it was to make the comments look a little more intelligent instead of the proverbial "First" you occasionally see.

Never seen one of my posts removed, though.

Back to the story...

I guess all those Estes rockets and chemistry sets I used to play with as a kid would get me waterboarded today.

I used to take Dad's cigar tubes and make incindiary rockets with them by inserting match heads, black powder and gas soaked cotton balls inside.  The rocket engine would light off the concoction.  Best viewed at night.  I once lit the highway median on fire too with one of the cigar rockets.

Islam is about fascist political control cloaked by a thick layer of pseudo-spiritual BS.

The word “Islam” translates in English to “submit or surrender”

The megalomaniacs called mullahs and ayatollahs want to regulate every aspect of daily life to consolidate their power, for self-gratification and to insulate themselves from the dysfunction their policies create.

Hmm.. sounds like the model Washington DC is using.

Don't be suprised what happens next. it's all fairly predictable. That said, i like the kid. He's learned one of the hard lessons in life - Behavior is predictable. Anyone with a teenager has seen one of these. It looks comical, not threatening. Unless your a f'king elf terrorist. Actually, the little project boxes you buy for home hobby electronics look a lot more damn suspicious.

If Ahmed was smart, he would have used the pink Hello Kitty version and then said he preferred not to identify with either gender and the cops forced him to use a male-only bathroom - that would have been worth at least another $100,000 on his lawsuit from those neanderthals.

"The next next step: Thinking"

From Carl Sagan:

“I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...

The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance”

Wed, 09/16/2015 - 16:27 | 6557281 ajax
ajax's picture

And again from Carl Sagan:

“An extraterrestrial being, newly arrived on Earth - scrutinizing what we mainly present to our children in television, radio, movies, newspapers, magazines, the comics, and many books - might easily conclude that we are intent on teaching them murder, rape, cruelty, superstition, credulity, and consumerism. We keep at it, and through constant repetition many of them finally get it. What kind of society could we create if, instead, we drummed into them science and a sense of hope?”

One thing that jumped out at me, from teh article:

"an engineering teacher suggested that he not show the invention to other teachers".

Ok so the engineer/science guy recognized the device as harmless and didn't call the cops.

But, wait for it...
"but it beeped during an English class, prompting Ahmed to show his English teacher what it was"

I don't see a crime here. The only victim is the boy. And the dumball english teacher is to blame for all of it.

See something say something.

It's a failure of the whole system.  So the teacher was unsure and perhaps a bit alarmed, but I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and opine that she wasn't the one who called in the cops.  The principal did.

The proper thing to do was to ask the kid what it was and ask him to open the box.  They could have waited in the next room if they were really that paranoid.  If they couldn't tell that it wasn't a bomb themselves, they should have called in the engineering teacher.  Or maybe just asked the kid to explain it to them...  reeeeaaalll slooooowww.

By the way, had I been on that school board, there would have been an emergency meeting that night to remove the principal from his position due to gross incompetence, an immediate apology would have gone out to the boy and his parents, and the English teacher would have been the one that got the three-day suspension.

Obviously you were taught in American public 'schools'.

Re-read the article slowly. It might take one or more times for you.. See the thinking flaws in the reaction of the moron-teachers ?

If you don't see those flaws, who knows - you may even have an 'Education' degree. In that case, youre likely a lost cause.

I agree. Once the police were called in, there is no going back. All hell breaks loose with protocal. The kid said he showed it to the teacher. Unless he opened it, and showed him what was inside (not mentioned in the video), I myself would not want to open the suitcase if the kid was radical nutjob. The kid has some questionable behavior here, putting a digital clock on the side of a metal case .. uhm.

Another thing, the article assumes he was questioned because he is Muslim. That's kind of a racist leap of logic on the article's part in itself.

Yep.  The world's smallest bomb.  Look at the size of the lock in comparison to the rest of the box.  If anything, it looks more like a pencil box.

But don't let that deter you from snorting condescendingly at the kid.  Blaming the victim is pretty much how we roll anymore.

I disagree with 'it looks like a bomb'.

From the pictures I have seen, I think that any reasonably inteeligent person can see that it is nothing more than a few LED with a circuit board and batteries. i.e. It has no explosive material or parts. While I can maybe forgive or understand no one at the school not knowing what they were looking at with the way things are today (30 or 40 years ago most men would have recognized and understood what they were looking at, today I think we would be lucky f most men could identify the battery, circuitboard/IC and LED parts and knew what they did), I can not believe that the police did not know what it was.

Who said the kid is a genius ? (I don't know if he is one or not). I built the same kind of electronics projects as a kid when his age. So did a lot of other boys. Kids are naturally creative & curious, before 'school' destroys that. - - Youre missing the point.
The real subject is the paranoid police state mentality that turns Amerika into one big prison. And, how stupid and ignorant are many of those running 'schools' today. If someone took the electronic alarm clock that wakes them each morning out of its enclosure, & showed it to them, - theyd probabably have a heart attack. " It looks like a bomb ! "

In Amerika we're probably on a list for even discussing this subject.

Mark Passio said it well - " Government is a religion, it is a way of thinking. "

People think 'government' is a Thing. It is not.

You can't show someone 'the government' because its just a word, a concept, a way of thinking. You can only show someone a guy wearing an 'official' uniform or some office building occupied by a lot of people paid 'government' checks, etc. All of them believe the illusion that 'government' is a real Thing. And, many of the taxpayers (extortion victims) are under that same illusion. Ultimately, it comes down to the belief in false 'authority'. It comes down to wanting a substitute 'Mommy' and 'Daddy' figure to take care of people and 'protect' people. ( Why would people pay so much attention to the election debates - except that they hope for a new Mommy/Daddy figure to save them ? )

You have the right to do whatever does not harm or interfere with the natural rights of others. You can have your own preferences, and you can advocate for them all you want. You do not have the right to impose those on others. Pretty simple. And you can see, - that most written 'laws' are pure bullshit.

Most people believe in the religion of false 'authority' which includes a belief that 'government' is a real thing. Is it any surprise that government employees (teachers, principal, cops) would act so stupidly ? And those living in that community believe in the illusion also.

People run from real Freedom as fast as they can. They can't handle real Freedom or the Truth. And maybe they'd blow up the planet before giving up their illusions.

We'll see.

My friend did this in junior high school decades back, except he actually put something on it which looked like it could be dynamite, unlike this kid's clock.  The teacher saw it, borrowed it and put it on the desk of another teacher she was friends with to tease her.  She called the principal thinking it was a bomb and he looked at it and laughed.  No police were involved and my friend got to stay after school for being an idiot.  Life was simpler then.

In some other state this may not have happend; if the boy had been white, this may not have happened; if the boy had not been a Muslim, this may not have happened.  Only by a Texan, where the inventor was dark skinned, Muslim-American, would this have become a national/international story!

in those days there were so few Mohammadeans here, 80% of the population had never heard of Islam

and now that they're here, even perfectly innocent behavior requires a bomb squad just in case

When I was 13 my best friend made a real fake bomb out of clay and wires and brought it to school to scare everyone. It looked real. I think he got a detention and had to stay after school for an hour.
