GOP Debate Post-Mortem: Trump Top, Fiorina Flourish, Carson Crumbles

Tyler Durden's picture

While Lindsay Graham was a clear winner in the undercard (like being the tallest midget?), the main event was a mosh-pit of anatagonistic self-abuse for The GOP as candidates ran rough-shod over each other and the moderators. Fiorina stood up to Trump (though not too aggressively) and Trump replied how beautiful Fiorina's face was, Paul was bowled over (by Trump), and Trump was ironically dismissed as "a great entertainer" as the debate took place in great entertainer Ronald Reagan's library. It was clear that "the rest" of the GOP field was not about to let Trump dominate... and he didn't but the night was, in one word, chaos. Trump spoke the most as expected and in most polls was voted as 'winner' with Fiorina gaining most.

CNN's Jeff Zeleny seemed to confirm social media's view that Graham was the undercard winner

Sen. Lindsey Graham had the strongest performance of any candidate in the first debate. Graham topped the talk-time...

  • Graham: 19:47
  • Santorum: 15:38
  • Jindal: 13:06
  • Pataki: 10:58

From start to finish, his one-liners delighted the crowd, his command of policy was unmatched, particularly on national security and foreign policy. He exuded substance. And he shows that experience pays. The question is whether voters want that experience. And, of course, whether he will ever be able to debate the full field.

But the bookies sum it all up... Odds to suspend/end campaign by Nov. 1

George Pataki

  • Odds pre-debate: 40%
  • Odds post-debate: 55%

Lindsey Graham

  • Odds pre-debate 42%
  • Odds post-debate 42%

Rick Santorum

  • Odds pre-debate: 34%
  • Odds post-debate: 40%

Bobby Jindal

  • Odds pre-debate: 33%
  • Odds post-debate: 40%

So Pataki is gone? Which is somewhat comical given Trump's later comment that

"Pataki wouldn't be elected dog-catcher right now"

*  *  *

The main event started with what felt like an hour of introductions then the big one hit...

The first heads-up was Fiorina vs Trump as she positioned him as a "great entertainer," which is ironic given the debate was being held in Ronald Reagan's (an entertainer) library, but declined to answer if Trump was "qualified" to put his finger on the nuclear button:

  • *FIORINA SAYS UP TO VOTERS TO DECIDE IF TRUMP IS QUALIFIED

Then Trump began...

  • *TRUMP SAYS RAND PAUL SHOULDN'T BE ON DEBATE STAGE

Which the eye surgeon swung at...

  • *PAUL SAYS TRUMP'S ATTACKS ARE WHAT HAPPENS IN `JUNIOR HIGH'

Carson came across quiet again...

Retired Neurosurgeon Ben Carson was surging in the polls coming into Wednesday night’s debate, but he has done little this evening to draw voters to his candidacy. He has had few, if any, memorable statements.

But actually spoke more than last time and managed some good points...

Bush had more of a presence that last time but his most notable moment was to Trump's negativity on his brother...

“Your brother’s administration gave us Barack Obama because the last 3 years were such a disaster.”

“It was such a disaster those last few months that Abraham Lincoln couldn’t have been elected,” Trump says at CNN’s Republican presidential debate

Bush opened back-and-forth by saying of Trump: “The lack of judgment and lack of understanding about how the world works is really dangerous”

or put another way...

But disappointed his mum...

Trump and Cruz were the most "uncivil" according to US News...

*  *  *

Donald Trump summed it all it in 7 seconds

Responding to Paul, Trump pounded him with "I never attacked him on his looks, and believe me, there’s plenty of subject matter right there.”

But Paul made some good points...

Mid way through, CNN re-ignited the Trump-Fiorina battle...

The only thing Kasich said was:

  • *KASICH SAYS TAX RATES ON CARRIED INTEREST SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED

Trump added:

  • *TRUMP ON TAXES: THE HEDGE FUND GUYS WON'T LIKE ME

For a brief moment, there was some agreement with Trump...

“We are the only ones dumb enough, stupid enough” to offer citizenship to babies born in U.S. to parents here illegally “and we take care of the baby for 85 years,” Donald Trump.

Trump says 14th amendment says birthright citizenship “is not correct and in my opinion it makes absolutely no sense”

Rand Paul says “I hate to admit it but Mr. Trump has a point here” and says there’s never been a “direct supreme court case” on children born to immigrants in the U.S. illegally

Carly Fiorina says you “cant just wave your hands and say the 14th amendment is going to go away.” “It will take an extremely arduous vote in congress” and “a long arduous process in court”

Politico offers some inisght with Trump's 7 most memorable debate lines...

1. First words: “I’m Donald Trump. I wrote the art of the deal. I say not in a braggadocious way. I’ve made billions and billions of dollars.”

2. Asked to respond to Carly Fiorina: “First of all, Rand Paul shouldn’t even be on this stage. He’s number 11.”

3. On himself: “Believe me. My temperament is very good, very calm.”

4. On Paul: “I never attacked him on his looks, and believe me there’s plenty of subject matter right there.”

5. On George Pataki: “He wouldn’t be elected dog-catcher right now.”

6. On his multiple bankruptcies: “People are very, very, impressed with what I’ve done. The business people.”

7. A left-handed compliment to Jeb Bush: “More energy tonight. I like that.”

Trump and Bush managed the handshake that Trump and Carson didn't...

And here is CNN's protracted way of adding to ad revenues... POTUS nicknames...

*  *  *

As expected, Trump spoke most... more than Paul, Walker, & Huckabee combined

Quite different allocations that last time...

*  *  *

Polls suggested trump was the clear winner...

But the big surge by Fiorina and plunge for Carson was most notable.

As CNN notes, the second Republican debate was supposed to be the one where candidates like Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and other would-be frontrunners ganged up on Trump.

But Trump's greatest antagonist on Wednesday night was Carly Fiorina. Fiorina, who got into the main event at the 11th hour, was aggressive and concise in taking on Trump.

She countered his attacks against her business acumen, challenged his remarks about her appearance, and demonstrated her knowledge of foreign policy -- a slight against Trump's inability to cite specifics in a recent Meet The Press interview.

No one on stage Wednesday night showed as much passion, nor demonstrated as much poise, as Fiorina -- which could yield major results among Republicans who don't support Donald Trump.

And as Google Politics shows, search interest in Fiorina and Trump soared...

We are all winners though...

*  *  *

Finally, this excellent tweet summed up the circus perfectly...

Didn't watch, but, based on commentary and what you guys are saying, it seems like CNN has magnificently accomplished its major purpose-- which was to elevate Hillary in reverse by making every one of the possible alternatives seem unpalatable to Joe and Jane Sixpack. That was their intent and it appears that they have succeeded in planting the false meme without much intellectual realization.

Lindsay Graham the winner? Really?

Who's dumb enough to buy that piece of goods mouldering on the shelf?

U always have interesting comments.

But I seemed to just get comments that support the Neo-Con, and for Propaganda for strengthening the MIC.

- I just got small part of the debate and didn't know who was answering
- But all will support aggressive Republican Global War on Terror as I understood, but found statement by Rubio to be totally MIC Industry Talking Point, He has no idea how to implement what he has said, there is little substance to his Military Perspective, not to pick him out, but this is typical of all politicians in a Campaign.

- Yeah, we are the USA, we are a superpower, we must police the world, we must not give up strength like military personnel... except when the lobby is strong and they say give up personnel & we will lobby for US Strength in the next Election cycle as we always do, and our conservative institutions always win the lobby for war and a stronger military, every time, that is the strategy, cut military personnel in time that will predict or need higher personnel, in this way we increase MIC contractors... and then as Republicans work the narrative of weak military for advantage... like the bombings in Italy in the 1970s or the killing of police in Italy in the 1970s, or the kidnapping of important people in Italy in the 1970s. (NATO operations to influence Politics and it appears to be True in the USA regarding the 911 Attacks)

Don't watch BBC Video on TimeTravels on Operation Gladio.

I'm sure it has no bearing on US Politics... surely. Secret Armies in Europe, NATO, US CIA, what a story.

But since US press doesn't publish this kind of news, well the US Presidential Race won't mention the scandal which does actually ask what influence the CIA had. And proved the CIA had influence.

More often than not, I find that it is necessary to integrate foreign sources into the quest for the truth about domestic issues.

That goes for every country everywhere. They are ALL beholden to their internal masters but have some leeway when covering certain issues abroad.

If it matters to the boss, though, the lid comes down on everybody.

I watched the debates for one reason: To see if any of the candidates would even mention if any of them had a plan as to how they where going to deal with the massive $19 trillion debt. As I suspected, none did. I have known for some time now that the repukelican party is {as STP would say} Dead and bloated. What a joke. Bring on Bernie. Forward Soviet! the USSA is all lubed up, and ready for the big dick in their ass that is socialism. There is no credible alternative after what I just saw.

I thought Fiorina did fine until her closing speech, which sounded like she plagiarized it from a Boy Scout Handbook. If she had given advance notice I might have stood and saluted the screen while playing God Bless America on my DVR.

It might play better on the day before the elections over a year from now. But, maybe she’s thinking she’ll never make it that far, so why not put it out there while she’s got a chance.

After a great deal of soul searching, I have decided to join the race. As the anchor baby child of a poor polish lesbian couple who came to America with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the 4.5 million dollars they were awarded in a civil action lawsuit against the DPRK, I know what it is like to come from humble beginnings. Having amassed a small fortune selling Kirby vaccuum cleaners and putting myself through high school I started my career in politics as a senior congressional custodian. I later became an avid golfer and political commentator best known for yelling at Rush while listening to his show on my morning commute. My message is simple "I'm going to make America great again, I'll make your sex lives so amazing and your children will be respecful once again. I'm going to get the best people to do the best job of making us the best and things will be better. Unicorns & dragons WILL be real! Taxes will be abolished and knobs will be polished and people are gonna love us!" I will not accept any money or support or votes from anyone! America!

If these bleeding liberal a holes want them here so bad, lets start docking all government employees pay check, healthcare benefits and retirement contributions to pay for what it's costing us out of pocket and jobs.

I'm done paying for government employees, government kick backs, planned chop shop, UN, IMF, foreign bribes, corporate welfare and Illegal Aliens. Enough is enough.

Now I do Have a suggestion to get this country's small business back on track.

Trump should come out with a plan to give a tax break for a period of 5 years to anyone who invest in small business as a partner in that business. Something similar to crowd funding, but with a smaller one time fee .5 - 1%. I Might be willing to let the city or county tax authority run it and collect the fee, but not the feds or state. The more competition in government the better.

I have a plan already to go. All I need is for the government to either do something like this or die.

In the midst of all my bitching, you might have noticed that I never complain about politicians. I leave that to others. And there's no shortage of volunteers; everyone complains about politicians. Everyone says they suck.

But where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky; they don't pass through a membrane from a separate reality. They come from American homes, American families, American schools, American churches, and American businesses. And they're elected by American voters. This is what our system produces, folks. This is the best we can do. Let's face it, we have very little to work with. Garbage in, garbage out.

Ignorant citizens elect ignorant leaders, it's as simple as that. And term limits don't help. All you do is get a new bunch of ignorant leaders.
So maybe it's not the politicians who suck; maybe it's something else. Like the public. That would be a nice realistic campaign slogan for somebody: "The public sucks. Elect me." Put the blame where it belongs: on the people.

Because if everything is really the fault of politicians, where are all the bright, honest, intelligent Americans who are ready to step in and replace them? Where are these people hiding? The truth is, we don't have people like that. Everyone's at the mall, scratching his balls and buying sneakers with lights in them. And complaining about the politicians.

For myself, I have solved this political dilemma in a very direct way. On Election Day, I stay home. Two reasons: first of all, voting is meaningless; this country was bought and paid for a long time ago. That empty shit they shuffle around and repackage every four years doesn't mean a thing.
Second, I don't vote, because I firmly believe that if you vote, you have no right to complain. I know some people like to twist that around and say, "If you don't vote, you have no right to complain." But where's the logic in that? Think it through: If you vote, and you elect dishonest, incompetent politicians, and you screw things up, then you're responsible for what they've done. You voted them in. You caused the problem. You have no right to complain.

I, on the other hand, who did not vote—who, in fact, did not even leave the house on Election Day—am in no way responsible for what these politicians have done and have every right to complain about the mess you created. Which I had nothing to do with. Why can't people see that?
Now, I realize last year you folks had another one of those really swell presidential elections you treasure so much. That was nice. I'm sure you had a good time, and I'm sure that everyone's life has now improved. But I'm happy to say that on Election Day I stayed home. And I did essentially what you did. The only difference is when I got finished masturbating I had something to show for it.

Representative democracy is the problem because politians are self-serving, corrupt liars.  Politians should be administrators ensuring existing laws are being complied with, and develop changes and ideas to address problems.  Final decisions should be approved by the people by a vote/referendum.  Nothing will change until there is a Direct Democracy.

Power seekers have an inverse morality. The worse things get, the more chances to exercise power. That's what makes the next generation of office holders so dangerous.

Though I don't vote, Trump would be my choice for next president, only for the entertainment value. Fiorina could turn out of be his running mate if she holds up.

I am more likely to be killed on a Chicago tollway than by  a "terrorist."

I am more likely to be taxed to death than paid any serious attention to by a politician.

I am more likely to read a storefront sign in Spanish in my suburb than in English.

I am more likely to understand why all our government programs are underfunded and we need to import illegal  immigrants to do menial jobs because we have slaughtered 50 million in the womb,   mostly black,  since 1973.  I will let all you financial wizards do the math on that as the 1974 murdered  could be grandparents by now.

I am more likely to be hit by lightening than to believe that anyone on that stage has any interest in ridding us of the government megalopoly our nation has become.  Like  a snake eating its tail.

I D R M C.  I don't recognize my country.  Want a leader?  14 percent flat tax.  Consumption.  Boom.  No sales tax for local governments,  currently 8.25 where I live.  Your 11 dollar Burger King lunch is now  almost 12 dollars.  It adds up.

All government jobs to be paid market rate for same professions in private sector.  Retirement to be at 67 just like the private sector.  If age limitations come into effect,  I E   secret service,  military,, some exceptions.

Corporate taxes,  no loopholes, 14%.  You think you don't pay for corportate taxes when you purchase their finished product or service?

It has to start locally people.  No one on that stage has all the right answers.  The true powers that be can't be seen.  Ask JFK.

Sound money?  End the Fed?  Not in our lifetime but you can take back your local governments,  school boards etc.

WE have a school district striking here locally.  Reason for strike?  3% annually for raises is not enough.  They want 4%.  Where does that money come from?   Anyone here getting 4 percent raises the next three years.  Pensions and golden insurance coverage until you die after you leave work?  Didn't think so.

Every where we look is F ed up.  We could fix this.  It would take all of us.  Everyone reading this has different skills.  Everyone reading this knows what is Bullshit when we see it or you wouldn't spend your time and energy caring aobut what we see all around us.  There are few countries on earth with the natural resources,  the people ,  the energy and the potential to be great.  How to you measure greatness?  It may be different than how I measure greatness but I do know this.  We have to work.  We have to demand more from our government.  It is our responsibility to affect change.

Before all the red arrows,  I was campaign manager for a friend who ran for city council.  Pro business,  less gov regs.  city of 110 K.  Not Mayberry.  We are still outnumbered of a council of 7 by a 4 to 3 count but we are working on it.

We have to take the government back.  I work 6 days a week.  I have no time to run for office but I did what I could.  We can all do more.  Look around.  Conditions won't change themselves and we didnt get here in a day.  We can fix this.  Do your part.  of the people,  BY  the people,  and FOR the people.  Maybe two people on that stage are FOR the people.

You're part of the problem. The system isn't broken, so quit trying to fix it. The system is evil, and all the shit we bitch about are features, not flaws. You wanna do something? Stop contributing. Stop feeding the beast. You're working 6 days a week? What the fuck... quit your job. Don't give those bastards one more second of your labor. Get to know your kids while they're still young.

There's no point in trying to fix a system that is custom designed to enslave us. I doubt like hell we can destroy it. The single best thing we can do is hand it divorce papers.

Funny let's play "spot the zionist looters"

Who supports criminal invasion and fighting wars for foreign property acquisition gratis?

To me Fiorina came across as a warmongering idiot, especially when she mentioned building new planes & ships for the military to have the strongest military in the world, the strongest military in the world is a liability if your country is bankrupt and full of hostile and illegal aliens.

Our military is a tool for citizen immigration liability and national debt, not security.

I like Fiorina and Carson.  I find the whole fascination with Trimp to be similar to the psychological enjoyment of being able to say (nearly) anything you one want at any time - kinda like reasons people like Howard Stern or the overriding atmosphere here in ZH. It has its benefits but most know its allowable in certain circles.  And maybe his anti-PC fans feel the need to widen rhis circle - but will it work on the world stage?

Trumps popularity is evidence the silly season is still in effect.  Unfortunately, the silly season never ended when Obama was running.

How cool Obama was suppose to be.  And what a disaster he has been.

The cast of candidates look they were hired by a committee of oligarchs in exchange for political favors downstream. The diversity is too broad to be an accident. That's why I'm not convinced Trump is not serious about wanting to be president.

If my suspicions are correct, Bush and Clinton will be the party nominees with Hillary the next president.

To 2handsam and I am part of the problem. "Quite your job , spend time getting to know your kids." I have worked and paid taxes for 46 years. I have 5 grandkids and one on the way. I know my kids just fine. They know themselves just fine too!
It is my grandkids that need to live with the consequences. So unless you have something to say other than fuck them all and quit paying I would say if you have a roof over your head you are paying taxes too.
Quit working! Yup ! That'll fix it all I am sure
