This Is The Satellite Image That Supposedly Proves The Presence Of Russian "Troops And Aircraft" In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

In a day of diplomatic snafus by the Pentagon, which first admitted it had spec ops forces in Syria (remember when it was just "advisors" and the Obama administration was blaming Russia for escalating the conflict by daring to join the fight against ISIS and sending its own troops in Damascus) then promptly retracted, using the old "there was no Freudian slip" explanation, the US promptly needed another diversion to cast the blame back in Putin's court.

Which brings us to our post from Monday in which "anonymous" US officials told Reuters that "Russia has positioned about a half dozen tanks at a Syrian airfield where it has been steadily building up defenses" with Reuters adding that "one of the U.S. officials said seven Russian T-90 tanks were seen at the airfield near Latakia, a stronghold of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The two U.S. officials said Russia had also positioned artillery there" adding that "the two U.S. officials said Russia had also positioned artillery, which they said appeared."

Our request was simple: "We can only hope the "anonymous" US officials will soon provide photographic evidence of their claims."

Today, we got this "evidence" when Foreign Policy magazine released a satellite image which, according to the author Jeffrey Lewis "Leaves No Doubt That Russia Is Throwing Troops and Aircraft Into Syria."

On Sept. 4, the New York Times published an article suggesting that Russia had shipped prefabricated housing and a transportable air traffic control station to an airfield near Latakia. It was a great scoop, but I was pretty baffled that the New York Times didn’t bother to purchase a satellite image of the facility. Had they done so, they would have realized that they buried the lede.

The satellite image shows far more than prefabricated housing and an air traffic control station. It shows extensive construction of what appears to be a military canton at Bassel al-Assad International Airport (named for Bashar’s elder brother, who died in a car accident in 1994). This canton appears designed to support Russian combat air operations from the base and may serve as a logistical hub for Russian combat forces.

The scale of the construction goes even further. A large area of ground has been cleared in many different parts of the air base. There are pallets and crates everywhere. Trucks are visible driving into the site. The image drives home the implication of all those flights and shipments heading to Syria: Russia is substantially expanding its involvement.

Is there "no doubt" as the author claims this is happening? We leave it to readers to decide. One thing that is certain is that earlier today it was the US which first admitted it had spec ops in Syria in what could be the most inconvenient Freudian slip in recent "proxy war" history, and then was promptly forced to retract it.

As for Russian forces "undoubtedly" throwing troops into Syria, well - decide for yourself. Here is FP's before and after satellite image "evidence." It's important because images such as these are the modern equivalent of Colin Powell's vial of WMDs presented to the United Nations in 2003 to justify the war with Iraq.

How can one NOT be struck by the hypocrisy of Israel or the U.S. calling any other power out for having licit or illicit bases in another country?!  My God... can you imagine the tome of satellite photographs that must exist showing the latter's fingerprints?

This is the usual MSM spew as directed by ZATO. Bibi is all butt-hurt that Assad took out one of his F-16s a few weeks ago - censored in the MSM of course.

Israel lost an F-16 to a Syrian S-300 near the end of August. It was defending al Nusra that were attacking something in Quneitra. The Israelis are desperate to annex more land inside Syria and need their al Nusra rats to take over Quneitra. The Israelis pretty much want to steal all the UNDOF-guarded buffer zone from Syria and declare a new buffer zone even further inside Syria so they can finally attack Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon with their aircraft WITHOUT worrying about Syrian air defense.

On the map, you'll see Mt. Hermon. The highest spot near there is Jabal ash Shaykh, the northern tip of the UNDOF zone, which Israel figures it owns. Like the Golan, Israel will not be happy without owning everything that might be used to resist their aggression. Syrian air defense sites on ash Shaykh would be problematic for them, and they want their own missile bases there to attack Damascus. They also need to invade Southern Lebanon and ethnically cleanse the Shebaa Farms and attack Hezbollah, but they can't do that without controlling the mountains.

The Israeli airstrike earlier this week was further up in Beqaa Valley. This is a place of extreme historic significance to Israel. They were able to take out Syria's entire Soviet-era air defense network there in 1982. Israel has basically uses the same strategy today - take out all the SAM sites on the Syrian side of the Golan, then take out all Syrian SAM sites around Damascus and in the Beqaa Valley. They're trying to do that last part now, but then Russia showed up to spoil the party.

Israel was able to use al Nusra for the Syrian Golan SAM sites, but they're starting to lose those. Al Nusra just isn't as reliable as they thought. Israel has been trying to use al Nusra in Quneitra and Shebba Farms, but they keep getting their ass kicked by Hezbollah and the SAA. The recent loss of al Zabadani means their al Nusra/FSA Beqaa valley conquest is not going well either. In other words, their 'defeat the Syrian air defense network' has hit a wall.

Nettanyahu is heading to Moscow next week to threaten Putin. We'll see how well that goes. The current MSM spew is suppose to demonize Russia vis Syria and bolster Israel's psychopathic plans in the eyes of the public. So far, it's been a colossal failure. Everyone hates Israel and everyone likes Russia (except ZATO - and they're starting to come around).

Bibi's threats to nuke the Middle East always let him get whatever he wanted from the U.S. in the past. I would kill to be a fly on the wall of the Nettanyahu-Putin meeting. Bibi goes into a long rant about Hezbollah and Iran, threatening to nuke them both. Putin (bored - trying to remain awake) looks at his watch and says "Are we done here yet, you fucking psychopath? Nuke whomever you want. Russia will attend to her interests however we see fit." Leaving a sputtering, red-faced Nettanyahu demanding promises for Israel's protection as Putin walks out the door - laughing.

wait, wait....Bib's strategy of stirring up trouble in Ukraine, didn't 'force' Russia to slink away from the ME, tail between legs?   Do you think Bib's going to threaten to double down?  "We can make your life even MOAR difficult?"  I don't think Mother Merkel is thrilled with the Saudis sending jihadis to fight on Europe's border.  Afghan...Chechen...not her problem. But Ungvar?! This is getting out of hand. Not to mention her little brothers - Serbia, Croatia being overun with refugees.   And Bibs really can't deliver BHO, right?  Because he's insulted him one too many times, showboating before Congress.  Americans want out of the ME, not in further.  America First...make like Switzerland and protect our own.... And Congress knows it.  Lindsay Graham can't muster 1% support.  Who falls first, BIbs or Putin?  I think Bibs is highly replaceable.  A miscalulation this big has to have him really sweating. He's going to Russia to save his own job.

This reads like a George Washington piece.

People really need to wake up.

The U.S. has absolutely exquisite space-based observation capabilities far beyond the laughable descriptions in Hollywood movies.

When an area of interest is selected somewhere on the Earth's surface, you can bet your ass the U.S. knows, in detail, what is there.

The specifics of these systems are some of our nation's most closely held secrets.  If you want to know more, go to work for the National

Reconnaissance Office.  The best stuff is rarely seen by the general public. It is most certainly not given to weak-ass rags like the liberal Foreign Policy Mag.

Get a copy of "Deep Black"

[quote]Simply the definitive book on US intelligence-gathering from air-vehicles, space-borne platforms and sub-surface systems. Burroughs work is thorough and informative. Though now dated by more than a decade's worth of technological improvements, the basics of intelligence and counter-intelligence systems are well-covered here. The sections on aircraft (RC-135, U-2, TR-1, A-12, SR-71) and satellites are simply fascinating.
It's a shame this book is out-of-print. It would be nice to see a limited production run, perhaps a new edition. Mr. Burroughs, how about "Deep Black 2, The Next Generation"?

This is just *one* of the 796 bases, you will see it is full of combat aircraft that are ready to launch:

think you got your cause & effect backwards there - putin took snowden in to give us the finger b/c relations were already heading south.  it probably didn't help but on the ledger of us/russian tensions he's a rounding error.  putin is FAR from a "good guy" but I'm not sure how much (if any) more of a "bad guy" he is than us anymore.

& while assad is most definitely a bad guy there are worse outcomes for the situation in syria than for the russians to go in & drop an anvil on the civil war even if that means he stays in power.

+1000.  Could not agree more.  I sat on a cross-country flight with a military doctor that was serving in Afghanistan.  After a couple of drinks he opened up about how horrible the situation is.  He said that the Russians were absolutely merciless in Afghanistan and for the good of the world the US should have let the Russians finish the job.  Watch 'Charlie Wilsons War' after hearing that...fuck Charlie Wilson.

So absurd! Russian Times has published pictures and openly spoken of Russian troops on Syrian soil. At least Russia has a legitimate interest in the pipelines that they operate that run through Syria. Guess the US wants them to give to the Chinese, like they did for oil for which lots of people paid the ultimate prices. (In that war that "would pay for itself" remember?) Europe may want to rethink NATO as winter is coming.

Are you refering to the few russian "troops" that have been there on a small base since before the fighting started?

RT completely debunked the BS story started by the Israeli medi that Russia was sending a force into Syria.  Jets, heavy weapons, and a full expeditionary force.  RT took that BS story apart and showed it was false.

Around Sept 3 the Tylers also parroted the Israeli media storyline that this huge force was going to be there in just days.   So, where is it?

Indeed.

You can know automatically the images are fake.  It says so in the title:  satellite.   The word "satellite" is double speak code. A "satellite image" is fake or at best, a misrepresentation of some sort. No need to even look to know that.

People often ask why the Russians have not released "satellite images" of the MH17 shot down over Ukraine.  The reason is because there are none. Oh, the Russians have images but they are not "satellite" images. Westerners have been brain-fucked by NASA Hollyweird to expect and to demand picture-perfect bird's eye "satellite" images.  It is part of the hurdles of modern information wars.
