I live just a few miles from a country that apparently has 7100 nukes, so, no, as a Canadian I really don't like that. Nuclear weapons should be legislated out of existence, for all nations. WTF are a handful of nuclear nations running around saying 'do as I say, not as I do'?
Some of the less knowledgeable may think that th US invented the bomb. Wrong. US, Canada and Britain developed the bomb. One country had the foresight not to pursue such silliness after the war. But despite all those nuclear weapons etc, the west is still woefully behind in the nuclear technology arena since we can't make the leap to closed-loop reactors that don't create any hazardous waste. Think Fukushima. Then think about all those used fuel rods. Exactly. Closed-loop reactors are just way to sensible for the west to consider... better leave that smart stuff to the Russians and Chinese... it's way beyond our best and brightest.

IMHO, nuclear power is a by-product of weapons production and not the invesrse.
LFTRs are what should be being perfected instead of continuing to build dangerous unstable high radiation and high waste generating facilities without ever planning for or costing in decommission costs, arguing over waste disposal, fuel rod pool safety and the morality of using depleated uranium tipped shells in undeclared combat zones.

To your point, I think it's impossible to legislate nukes away. Look at the recent testing Russia did in the last couple years despite international laws. No one will trust anyone else to relinquish theirs, so it doesn't really matter what we think would be best.
