Assad Goes On Offense, Bombs ISIS "Capital", Deploys New Russian Weapons

Tyler Durden's picture

Now that Moscow has officially confirmed that Russian boots are on the ground at Latakia and that the Kremlin is actively ramping up its technical and logistical support for the Assad regime, one point we've been keen to drive home is that rebels, "freedom fighters", and marauding, black flag-waving jihadists alike will now have a much tougher time routing government forces and taking control of the country.

After all, battling Assad's depleted army (which is effectively fighting a three-front war with limited resources) is one thing, but fighting Russian special forces is entirely another, which is of course why the US is so "concerned" about the Russian presence in Syria. Put simply: if the Kremlin doesn't want Assad to fall, then Assad will probably not fall if the only challenge comes from various ragtag militias and Islamic militant groups. That calculus obviously changes if the challenge suddenly comes from a US-backed coalition consisting of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, France, Britain, Jordan, and Qatar.

It's with that in mind that we go to Reuters, who reports that the Russians may have breathed new life into Assad's forces which have reportedly begun using new weaponry and launching offensive strikes on Raqqa (the de facto ISIS capital). Here's the story:

The Syrian military has recently started using new types of air and ground weapons supplied by Russia, a Syrian military source told Reuters on Thursday, underlining growing Russian support to Damascus that is alarming the United States.

"The weapons are highly effective and very accurate, and hit targets precisely," the source said in response to a question about Russian support. "We can say they are all types of weapons, be it air or ground."

The source said the army had been trained in the use of the weapons in recent months and was now deploying them, declining to give further details other than saying they were "new types".

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said on Thursday Russia has provided new weapons and trained Syrian troops how to use them, without saying when or naming any specific systems.

He told state television the government would be prepared to go further and ask Russian forces to fight alongside its troops if needed - though he said there were no such soldiers there now.

Activists said Syrian government war planes had mounted at least 12 air strikes in Raqqa, often described as Islamic State's de facto capital. The raids started at around 11:30 a.m. and came in three separate waves that hit eight targets.

The strikes hit close to at least four Islamic State offices, including one used by its self-appointed religious police force, said an activist in Raqqa who was contacted via the internet and declined to be named for security reasons.

Islamic State imposed a curfew in two parts of the city.

What this seems to indicate is that regime forces are now set to take the fight to ISIS, which could mean that an already fluid situation is about to become even more indeterminate, so we thought this an opprtune time to remind readers that if you're having a difficult time keeping track of who's fighting who and why, you're not alone.

Take it from us, the haphazard collection of foreign forces, jihadists, rebels, mercenaries, and militants is hard enough to keep track of on its own, and the situation is further complicated by ever shifting alliances, divergent objectives, and external meddling.

Throw in the fact that the US has, at various times, trained and inserted a variety of makeshift contingents, all of which (well, with the exception of “four or five”) have been either killed or captured, or have otherwise disappeared into the desert and you have, to quote an unnamed Pentagon official who spoke to CBS last month, “a friggin’ mess.”

Complicating things further is the fact that the Russians are on the ground and building forward operating bases near Latakia and Turkish troops, if they ever get tired of chasing Kurds in the mountains of Northern Iraq, will probably find themselves operating somewhere between Kobani and Aleppo. As for US SpecOps (which the Pentagon swears are not engaged in combat despite what Gen. Lloyd Austin seemed to suggest when speaking to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Wednesday), there’s no telling where and with whom they’re fighting.

So, as the confusion and violence intensifies we present the following map from Reuters, which will hopefully be useful in helping to explain who controls what and where.

Oh but they are.

So let's see;

Russia in Syria,

China in Djibouti (and I'm a betting man, so soon Yemen too), and

Iran to the east.

So break out your "Risk" board and check out that triangle. SA is done for and Egypt can own the Suez but with China controlling the southern end of the Red sea the worlds oil supply geopolitically just took on a whole new look.

I would say the "Greater Israel Project" has hit a snag unless Israel can convince enough fucking retarded Americans to offer up more of their children to go and die for Israel's interests.

It's going to get interesting!

Rubio gets my vote for the biggest POS in last night's debate.  Anybody got another nomination?

http://time.com/4037239/second-republican-debate-transcript-cnn/

RUBIO: Well, first of all, I have an understanding of exactly what it is Russia and Putin are doing, and it’s pretty straightforward. He wants to reposition Russia, once again, as a geopolitical force.  He himself said that the destruction of the Soviet Union — the fall of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century, and now he’s trying to reverse that.  He’s trying to destroy NATO. And this is what this is a part of. He is exploiting a vacuum that this administration has left in the Middle East.  Here’s what you’re gonna see in the next few weeks: the Russians will begin to fly — fly combat missions in that region, not just targeting ISIS, but in order to prop up Assad.

He will also, then, turn to other countries in the region and say, “America is no longer a reliable ally, Egypt. America is no longer a reliable ally, Saudi Arabia. Begin to rely on us.” What he is doing is he is trying to replace us as the single most important power broker in the Middle East, and this president is allowing it. That is what is happening in the Middle East. That’s what’s happening with Russia, and…

It's not about a bully eventually meeting a bigger bully, the true danger to the bully is coming across a bully with more heart and/or conviction. A constant state of war to increase the wealth of the MIC elites doesn't really fall into the conviction category. If Putin clears ISIS from Syria, drops the mic, and walks away, Fifteen years of fighting terrorist will suddenly seem like the folly it is. I have a feeling Isis can't last 3 weeks in any actual military onslaught.

Syria has few natural resources. They have a very modest economy and income from the big pipelines running though the country that are a major source of income for them. Some of the pipelines are Russia's and Russia is there to defend it's business interests as well as to control the farce the US and Nato countries are trying to propagate. Winter is rapidly approaching and Europe may be seriously rethinking backing the US (who has NO LNG tankers). The US and Canada are unrealistic if they think Russia is going to sit still for messing with pipelines, in Syria or the Ukraine.

If Assad went on the airwaves and said he was going to defend the lives of Christians from IS in Syria, and had video of his military actually doing it, I suppose there would be a tidal wave of support for him and for the Russians coming from the U.S... and perhaps a few of the European countries too... Then what would the anti-Assad coalition do?... Torpedo a U.S. military vessal while flying a Russian or Syrian flag?... Betcha!

Christians, Shias, Sunnis, Druze, Alawites, Kurds...all lived peacefully under Assad.  Is he a Dictator?  Probably, he is only in power because it was handed down to him from Daddy, but look at some (if not most) of the so called Democratic countries on this Earth.  U.S.  U.K. Israel, Germany, France (...and on and on.) they're hardly working for the better of their citizens, voted into power or not does NOT make them a Democratic country.  It just means they fooled a lot of people into thinking that they had their (citizens) best interests at heart, when they clearly didn't.  All these 'democratic' countries leaders soon forget, once they get into power, that they are supposed to work for the people of said country.

Rotten to the core the lot of 'em.

I can tell you that the Armenians in Syria highly support Assad. The Syrian army of mostly Muslim young men died to protect and liberate Christian villages while the US supports Turkey that opened its borders for jihadis in Turkey to attack Kessab, an Armenian town, and other Christian towns.

NATO is supplying ISIS from the Balkans through Turkey. EU journatlists reporting on this have been mysterously killed in southern Turkey.

So my final word on this is: the US can go to hell.

Defending Christians, according the the US media, would be :

Xenophobic

Racist

Sexist (cuz da xtians hate da gays)

Misogynist (cuz da xtians hate da womynz)

The only people allowed to be openly and publically defending in the US are gays, mexicans, blacks, women, and lib/progs/jews.

Straights, conservative whites, and most males just need to die to make the CNN libprog crowd happy.

So yes, Assad would depicted as the next Hitler if he dared to publically defend Christians. The US media will not tolerate defense of anything white or traditional.

That's why they hate Putin.

This is heading to Syria too: Hell on Earth: Russian Heavy Flamethrower Shocks Viewers -

Thermobaric rockets are a "fuel-air" weapon system. When fired, the rockets disperse a cloud of flammable liquid into the air around the target, and then ignite it.

The results are devastating — not only is the explosion significantly longer and the shockwave significantly hotter and stronger than a conventional warhead, but all the oxygen in the near vicinity is also consumed, creating a partial vacuum. This makes them horrifying weapons to use against infantry and entrenched personnel in bunkers and caves—exactly what the TOS-1 was designed for,” Popular Mechanics noted.

*A full salvo of the system’s 24 rockets will make a rectangle 200 meters by 400 meters – a bit more than eight city blocks – hell on earth for anyone caught inside.”

Putin really is a very pragmatic leader and I am still amazed how intelligent most of his actions are. You can for example look at his treatment of Jews in Russia and you will know what I mean. A lesser intelligent man could have been tempted to start persecuting Jews (like Hitler did). But Putin simply put them on a tight leash, while showering them with support and gifs. The famous Russian method of "honey and a whip".

When Vladimir Putin offers you a gift — you accept it.

That’s according to Berel Lazar, Russia’s chief rabbi, who said he had to accept Putin’s offer to move a contested Jewish library to a new Jewish museum in Moscow controlled by Chabad in Russia.

The Schneerson Library, a collection amassed by the early rabbinic leaders of the Chabad Hasidic movement, has been at the center of a decades-long legal battle between Chabad’s American leadership and the Russian government.

Putin’s decision to entrust the library to Chabad in Russia pitted the Hasidic movement’s representatives in New York against its brethren in Moscow, sparking a testy war of words earlier this year. But Lazar said he had no choice.

The president didn’t ask us, he just told us” to accept the books, said Lazar, who is himself a Chabad rabbi. “Saying no to the Russian president, in general, is not something done in Russia.”

Lazar also criticized America’s belief that legal and political pressure could force Russia to change. He said that Americans failed to understand Russian culture, society or the Russian soul. Pressuring Russia will never succeed. I think the American negative criticism against Russia is really because they don’t understand the soul of the Russian people,” he added.

Thanks to his ties to the Kremlin, Lazar is sometimes called “Putin’s rabbi” — and this has helped Chabad’s Russian branch eclipse all the Jewish groups vying to reshape the country’s community of 250,000 Jews. Now Lazar heads a vast network that comprises dozens of employees and plentiful volunteers working in hundreds of Jewish institutions: schools, synagogues, community centers and kosher shops. To the criticism of his “obedience and support of Kremlin,“ Lazar answered that: “Challenging the government is not the Jewish way.“

During the celebration of the opening of the above-mentioned Jewish Museum, Putin had a warm speech to the Jews saying that they are welcome in Russia and they will be treated fairly, however, he managed to include a somewhat shocking remark that “85 percent of the members of the first Soviet government were Jews.“ This assessment of the composition of the National People's Commissars is the first such statement made by a head of state. Neither in the USSR nor later such data was disclosed. These facts were treated, at best, silently, and often, for some unknown reason, were regarded as rabid anti-Semitism. Vladimir Putin has made quite a bold move that in addition to other labels generously placed on him by the opposition may add a label of a reactionary and Jew-hater. On the other hand, his support of the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center has quite noble reasons, and was long-awaited by the Jewish community of Russia.
The Russian President concluded his speech in a rather unusual way, saying that Russia is passing the (contested) books to the Russian Jewish community with a smile.

As far as I can see Iran is a far more relatively enlightened and far less extreme and vile a country than Saudi Arabia. Neither is a bowl of petunias though, but decades of war and threats, and centuries of polarization will do that. And frankly the behavior of Israel is generally a lot more repulsive than that of Iran, on almost every level. And in fact, the behaviors of the Leaders of Saudi Arabia, GCC and Israel make Assad look comparatively highly desirable. If the West was serious about riding the ME of the worst of vile scum leaders they would be eliminating the leaders of allied ME states, and particularly Israel's.  ;-)

Lets get to it.  Another BS article by ABC Media/Zerohedge it appears.

All the stories about Russia building it's own airbase in Latakia seem to have qualifiers that they got this info from US intelligence.  Here is a story with a different point of view due to Russian sources.

http://sputniknews.com/politics/20150915/1027025693/russia-syria-base-pe...

6 Tanks?  Where?  Commanded by russian or sold to Syria?

Russia may help Syria build a base or expand a base but at this time Russia is not bulding an such base.

Boots on the Ground.  Would the ZH like to clairify that?  Are we talking construction advisors, tactical advisors sitting in an office and training (or possibly directing) Syrian forces?  Boots, does that mean 2?

Back around Sept 2 and 3 the Tylers posted their own articles that Russia was air lifting a full expeditionary force into Syria complete with heavy weapons and large numbers of fighter jets and it would happen in just days.  Turned out to be a lie.

Some are claiming Russia has given S300 missiles to Syria which was used to down an Israeli jet.  A jet may have been knocked down but there is no evidence of any S300 systems in Syrian hands.  NONE.  And until there is you know there is no real support for Syria by Putin.  Putin is scared to death that the Syrians might use such a system to end the air attack by Israel, Turkey, Jordan and NATO.

And there is this report of S300; http://www.globalresearch.ca/syria-shoots-down-israeli-warplane-f-16-bom...

Seems to me the Israelis have stopped bombing Syria since August 21, I would suggest that it isn't Putin whom is scared.

An Israeli plane may have shot down but it was not by S300's.  Everyone wants to think Syria has them but if they were there the western msm would be given satelite photo's of this.  The western media is trying to claim there are a few tanks (on behalf of the military) so you know if there were S 300's they would be screaming. Especially if an Israeli plane was shot down with one.  The plane appears to have been take down with Syria's normal systems and that is an embarrasment to Israel and the western media does not want ot report it as it makes Assad seem more powerful (without Russia).

Even the article says the helicopters were downed by shoulder fired systems.  Which I can believe.

If Putin actaully supported Assad he would have delivered the S 300 system several years ago.  It would be a game changer.  But he did not and there is no evidence he has done so recently.  It is more likely that Putin had a fit that an Israeli plane was shot down as this may motivate them to increase the pressure for the west to finish off Syria sooner and with force.   That direct movement by the west/NATO would exclude the role for russia in post Assad Syria that Putin has been trying to negotiate with the insurgent leaders.

According to this anti-zion propaganda "direct movement by the west" looks to be withering.

Are they "activists" or "terrorists"? I am so confused now.

Has anyone received the new edition off the Newspeak Dictionary?

I haven't gotten mine yet.

I got mine last week.

They've decided to combine terrorist and activist as a phrase now.

They're going with "terrible actors", which is kinda truthy in the case of ISIS.

If they were activists, NPR would be running special features on them complete with academcians endorsing their views and telling the listeners how much better the world will be if we would just obey the activists.

This happened yesterday morning on 'all things considered'. A 16 year old San Francisco based  gay Asian 'immigration activist' was interviewed for his amazing insights into immigration and how Americans, Trump in particular, are so racist and backward because we don't want to take every 3rd world refugee into America.

Because in progworld, underdeveloped teenaged brains (with little ability to understand consequences) should be telling adults what to think.

America FUCk YEAH!

NPR! FUCK YEAH!

Syria was peaceful until the US NGOs encouraged the rebellion back in 2011 which they had been planning for 5 years or more according to this article from 2007

If this works then not only stays Assad in power, he can then purge the country of IS and other folk opposing him. Iraq will then come under the influence of both Russia and Iran. That means that US policy in the ME has failed. But it is a long way till there. Expect more supplying of weapons to the rebels, more bloodshed and more refugees.

We can only hope that once Assad cleans out the vipers in his country, he'll do the same in Iraq and then finally, Saudi Arabia.

"Now that Moscow has officially confirmed that Russian boots are on the ground at Latakia and that the Kremlin is actively ramping up its technical and logistical support for the Assad regime..."

Moscow has confirmed nothing of the sort. Quite the opposite, they are fervently and officially denying having anything to do with Latakia.
As for the Kremlin "ramping up" anything, Putin has said he was only carrying on with the same military help to Syria he's extended over the last years.

The 'Murikans are seeing things and getting their panties in a knot over nothing, as usual.
Meanwhile, the only more or less level-headed guy of that whole God-awful bunch of retards, Kerry, is holding talks with Lavrov. (I wonder if he is level-headed because he speaks with Lavrov on a regular basis instead of imagining things, as opposed to Think-tankistan neocons who never step out of their Beltway offices and snort coke all day).

Describing Kerry as level-headed is a misnomer. He's another mindless idiot. The reason he's regularly talking to Lavrov is an attempt to prevent the ground/air conflict which looms between the two major powers escalating out of control.

I think the pink area on the map also indicates the migration route across Syria, heading for Germany.

Once they get all the pesky Syrians out of the way they can start laying pipe.
