It appears the secret to Trump's surprising success in the polls is actually simple - "know your audience." Given that, as we noted previously, Americans have never been dumber; whether by design or accident, Trump speaks at a fifth grade level - using short sentences and simple words.
Cruz, he of the Tea Party appeal and Harvard Law degree, clocked in at a more sophisticated 10th-grade reading level equivalent. The rest of the field can be found clustered around the seventh-grade level, roughly the same as some President George W. Bush speeches and even several by President Barack Obama.

Yes, I was stunned to see Carly's war threats, including sending Americans back into combat in Iraq, receiving loud applause while only a single person clapped after Rand Paul said he saw no national security interests threatened by the Syrian civil war. I would have thought that by now anybody paying attention would see the futility of further Middle East military adventures.

The Republican Party has been made up of several different "parties" for years, and Trump is merely exploiting the dominant sub party, The Stupid People Party (GW Bush was the previous standard bearer, and Ted thought he was gonna win this "lo info" Tea Party group by default this year, before Trump emerged). The other two main sub-parties, the Fundy Christian Party (Huckabee, Walker, Fiorina???) and the actual Conservative Party (Bush, the brother, Kasich, Fatso, etc. who used to be called Country Club party). Paul's attempt at adding a fourth Party within the Party ("Libertarian") isn't getting much traction.
Thanks to years of "dumb baiting," and co-opting of various other moron sub groups, the nominal Republican Party is now over 30 percent Stupid People Party, which has given Trump his huge leg up. The Country Club group, which runs the national Party machinery, usually puts the fix in to eliminate the Stupid People Party candidates before they can get too far (running the Doles and McCain's of the world) but this year the Stupid favorite is threatening to get beyond the money people's control.
It will be interesting to see if the Country Club group can put the cork back in the bottle and install another Bush, without hopelessly alienating the Stupid People Party, AND the Fundy Christains.
We may see a third party run by Trump yet.
