Russia Says It May Send Troops Into Combat In Syria As A Worried Netanyahu Heads To Moscow

Tyler Durden's picture

On Thursday evening, we detailed a Reuters report which suggested that the influx of Russian technical and logistical support to Bashar al-Assad’s depleted army at Latakia might have breathed new life into the regime as it seeks to rout Islamic State and a whole host of other armed groups fighting for control of Syria. “Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said on Thursday Russia had provided new weapons and trained Syrian troops how to use them,” Reuters said, before describing what certainly sounds like an invigorated air campaign against the de facto ISIS capital at Raqqa.

Importantly, al-Moualem also indicated that Syria would be willing to make an official request for Russian combat troops “if needed.”

Now clearly, it seems likely that Russian troops have already joined the battle and indeed, when the bullets start flying, the distinction between “logistical” support and “combat” support quickly becomes blurred, but through all the sabre rattling and back-and-forth banter between Kerry and Lavrov, both sides are still keen to at least pay lip service to the unwritten rules of international diplomacy which is why before Russia can admit that its troops are actually on the ground to fight, they’ll be a charade where Syria will pretend to be raising the issue with the Kremlin for the first time at which point the Kremlin will take a few days to “consider” things. As of Friday, it appears as though that process has begun. Here’s Bloomberg:

Russia said it’s willing to consider sending troops into combat operations in Syria if President Bashar al-Assad’s government requests assistance.

While the possibility is hypothetical now, “if there is a request, it will be discussed as part of bilateral contacts,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call on Friday. “Of course it will be discussed and considered.”

The prospect of direct Russian involvement in the country’s civil war, in which more than 250,000 people have died since 2011, would mark a sharp escalation in President Vladimir Putin’s support for the embattled Assad government. The U.S. has accused Russia of increasing military aid to Syria in recent weeks by sending tanks, artillery and personnel, as well as setting up what the Pentagon says might be a forward airbase near the coastal city of Latakia. Syria also hosts Russia’s only naval facility outside the former Soviet Union at Tartus.

The possibility of troop involvement emerged before a visit to Moscow by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday for talks with Putin about Russia’s growing military involvement in Syria. Netanyahu “will present the threats posed to Israel as a result of the increased flow of advanced war material to the Syrian arena and the transfer of deadly weapons to Hezbollah and other terror organizations,” the Israeli government said in an e-mailed statement on Wednesday.

To be sure, Netanyahu’s Russian visit comes at an interesting time. In the US, the last challenge to the Iran nuclear deal was defeated in the Senate on Thursday, paving the way for the agreement’s implementation. Needless to say, Netanyahu isn’t particularly pleased with The White House’s stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions and US-Israeli relations have deteriorated markedly this year thanks in large part to the Iran deal. But the Israeli PM is also concerned that Russia’s move to reinforce Assad could have implications for Hezbollah, something Netanyahu and Putin will discuss on Monday. Here’s Reuters:

Western officials and a Russian source said last week that Russia was sending an advanced anti-aircraft missile system to Syria in support of Assad.

The Western officials said the SA-22 system would be operated by Russian troops. A U.S. official, who confirmed the information, said the system may be part of a Russian effort to bolster defences at an airfield near Latakia, an Assad stronghold.

Even if Russians operated the missiles and kept them out of the hands of the Syrian army, the arrival of such an advanced anti-aircraft system could unsettle Israel, which in the past has bombed sophisticated arms it suspected were being handed to Assad's Lebanese guerrilla allies, Hezbollah.

(Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah)

Worried about accidentally coming to blows with Russian reinforcements in Syria, Israeli officials said last week they were in contact with Moscow. But Israel also made clear it would continue its policy of stopping advanced arms reaching Hezbollah.

And let’s not forget that just one month ago, Israel hit targets inside Syria after Damascus-based Islamic Jihad lobbed rockets at a village in Northern Israel. Netanyahu claimed the militants were acting on order from an "Iranian general."

“This is another clear and blatant demonstration of Iran’s continued and unabating support and involvement in terrorist attacks against Israel and in the region in general. This attack has also occurred before the ink on the . . . nuclear agreement has even dried, and provided a clear indication of how Iran intends to continue to pursue its destabilising actions and policies as the international sanctions regime is withdrawn in the near future,” Israel's foreign ministry said at the time.

That came just four weeks after Quds commander Qassem Soleimani reportedly met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow where, according to GOP mouthpiece Fox News, the Russian and Iranian leaders discussed "a new joint military plan to strengthen Syrian President Bashar Assad, a plan that is now playing out with the insertion of Russian forces in Syria."

In what looks like a rather conveniently timed announcement ahead of Netanyahu's trip to Russia, the Treasury said on Thursday that any Iranian bank receiving sanctions relief as part of the Iran nuclear deal would have sanctions re-imposed in the event they support Hezbollah or the Quds.

(Soleimani who, according to a CIA officer who spoke to The New Yorker in 2013, is "the most powerful operative in the Middle East today")

So this is the backdrop for Netanyahu's visit to the Kremlin and, as mentioned above, it's complicated by the fact that the Prime Minister is now at odds with the US over Washington's handling of the Iran Nuclear Deal. At the end of the day, one is certainly left to believe that Israel's "worries about accidentally coming to blows with Russian reinforcements in Syria" will quickly evaporate should Netanyahu get confirmation that the Quds are indeed on the ground as some reports have recently suggested and if it becomes clear that weapons are being funneled to Hezbollah, well, then all bets will officially be off.

What do you mean 'your country'? A country/nation is an idea, and that idea dies when the people lose faith in the institutions of the governing regime. 'Iraq' died when Saddam was overthrown and replaced with a shit show. 'Syria' died when the revolution happened and failed. What you have now is Assad and company fighting over control of land, not of a nation. The people of ISIL are birthing a new idea, which may or may not be still born.

The people fleeing this have nothing to fight for, they've already killed their gods and seek to kill more in Europe.

These 'refugees' have not a single great person among them. No spirit whatsoever. They are simply a stampeding herd, a vacuum in motion.

And nature abhors a vacuum.

They will do nothing but rally the spirit of Europe against them.

They will all be slaughtered in a genocide the likes the contemporary world has never seen...

I will happily conceed that Germany knew the Soviets had far more resources and land mass- after all the oil fields were a hell of a lot more important than Lebensraum.

But to say Germany knew that Russia had more (fighting) men in the West, armor (contemporary), and aircraft (contemporary or not) beggars the imagination.

Sorry Volkdav, I disagree. The fact is, we should hope that Russia's military is healthy, and able to mount a good offensive.  Otherwise, we are much closer to a nuclear accident born of desperation if they are cornered.  It is one thing when a super power pushes around weak little nations like Iraq or Syria.  It is quite another story when both sides has the ability to destroy the other in a matter of minutes.

Seriously, dude?  What would you expect Russia's objectives to be in Syria?  Pacification....that is funny.  You spend a lot of time in the Peace Corp?

Anyone who thinks that Isis can't be set back on their heels in short order is seriously delusional.  With half way decent intelligence, command & control centers can be identified and taken out - long distance.  Any fighting force massed large enough to be a serious threat can be dispersed - long distance.  With proper defenses, any of the Syrian or Russian military bases can be easily defended against these forces.

Going a little deeper, electronic surveillance should quickly identify logistical support lines and methods of moving financial transactions.  Also, the money is coming from somewhere - shut it down.  Identify the oil fields under their control and liberate them, or at least stop any and all transit in and out.

These are just a few reasons that we know The U.S. is not serious about destroying Isis.  Not serious at all.

Gee, if your goal is annihilation, why send troops at all?  Just send WMDs of some kind.  Russia certainly has 'em.

You only send boots on the ground to hold hostile territory.

Actually, the point is that the Russian army will focus on the objective at hand and take care of it without worrying much about winning hearts and minds.  They won't be trying to make Syria safe for democracy. Terminating the enemy will be the objective....period.  When you fight to win, it makes a huge difference.

I wouldn't expect many ground troops from them, either, but with air & artillery support, both offensive and defensive, along with some Russian special forces beefing up the Syrian troops and supporting the Kurds, ISIS will suddenly find life very unpleasant.  Bring a few Iranian Quds forces into the mix, and ISIS will likely be in full retreat towards Iraq very quickly....but, Oops!  The Quds Forces are operating in Iraq, too.  Does the Iraq govt want Isis headquartered in Iraq?  If not, maybe they will invite Russia to help them with their problems, too.

We have the refuge crisis mixed in with the Ukraine pipeline situation, the Greeks, and the coming winter in Europe; the situation with Syria, Turkey, and Iran in the ME; and the clown show in America as we head into the election season; China falling apart economically as they busily build up their military; Brazil leading the collapse of the emerging market miracle around the world; and an out of control FED.

Man, I don't know what to pay attention to more, but I know I will need plenty of popcorn over the next several months because there will be lots of entertainment.

But I doubt they will commit enough forces to roll ISIS back into Iraq.

Ok, let's think about that for a second. What IS the Russian mission statement?

Destroy all invaders, or push them back? When I fight ants or roaches, my goal is not to encourage them to go somewhere else. Granted, were my neighbor breeding roaches, with the intent of making me move to live somewhere else, I could see a scenario where I try to send them back to where they came from. Problem is, they could come back, and no one wants to live next to roaches.

Will they use the U.S. Cattle Herding strategy to send them back to Iraq for America and Turkey to deal with, or the tried and true Russian solution of "smash with boot"?

I said taking Iraq was easy, holding it wasn't.  Did we lose people?  Of course.  But we did it in a matter of weeks.  Iraq wasn't as easy as Grenada, but it was pretty easy for a country/military its size.  The vast majority of Sadaam's army didn't fight.  They took off their uniforms and hid.  The vast majority of US casualties came during the years long occupation.

You wanna count the dead?  See below.  The Major combat phase was over by 1 May 2003, and the US had lost less than 150 soldiers by then.  If you're gonna pull the "not counting the unreported" BS, then you crap can any number out your ass.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Iraq_War#/media/File:Ira...

The other thing is that our build up for Iraq was massive, over a period of months.  I kind of doubt Russia has the capability to project even a fraction of that sized force.  And, unlike the Iraqi army, ISIS is composed of true believers.  They may lose, but they will fight.

Fri, 09/18/2015 - 13:02 | 6565828 11b40
11b40's picture

If they bunch up, they will be dead quickly.

If they lose command & control centers, which they will, they will lose fighters, too, especially if the pay checks stop coming, which they will.  If Russia goes after them, and cuts off the head, most of their 'true believers' may not stay so true.  After all, we have seen most of them switch sides already.

If Iran gets involved, ISIS is mashed from both sides, and my guess is they would quickly try to regroup in Iraq.  A semi-coordinated effort by Syrian, Iranian, & Kurd forces on the ground with Russian air & artillery support would be a delight to watch.

They are bunched up and are doing ok.

They are not losing command centers.

They are getting paid.

They have plenty of insurgents and are getting more.

If Iran gets too involved or makes real ground force attack that will trigger NATO and they will get missiles and bombs raining down on them.

Russia is not giving air or artillery support to anyone in these fights and never has.

Until Putin actually fires upon the enemy then he is nothing but hot air and you can keep making excuses by claiming his retreat is a great chess move.

Iraq1, Iraq2, Serbia, EUkraine, Libya, Syria and others.

You really are a 'blankone'.

First, I guess you missed the "if" factor, as in "if" Russia gets seriously involved in military operations.  Then, they WILL lose command & control centers and senior leaders.  When supply chains get wrecked, everything changes and hungry, poorly supplied troops who are getting their ass beat lose morale quickly.

Russia will be operating at the request of Syria.  Syria is not a member of NATO.  Iran is not a member of NATO. Russia is not a member of NATO.  Who has said a word about involving Turkey....unless Turkey invades Syria or Syria's airspace.  NATO has zero to do with this in any legal sense.

Second, I guess you were asleep 2 years ago when 'Syria 1' went down, and the red line was crossed.  Look up what happened then if you don't know.

Third, as far as your little list of what I guess you see as great military accomplishment, what did Russia have to do with Iraq 1 & 2?  Libya?  Serbia was at a time when Russia was dazed & confuse.  A re-do might look much different today, and if you think Russia is somehow a big loser in Ukraine, what would winning look like?  They annexed some very valuable real estate, and will probably get more.  Regardless, they are very friendly with the more valuable East Ukraine, and the Western part of the country has become a pathetic basket case of hate, division, poverty, and a drain on the ZATO countries who shit their own bed there as the fucked up their gas supplies.

To me your little list looks like a list of shame.  Like someone said earlier, I am sorry for what America has become.

If this If that, Putin is gonna this time, Putin is gonna now, This is the red line no this is the red line.

IF the west and their proxies surrender it is all over.  But history of these wars shows otherwise.  Same as your IF's.  There is no connection to Russia's actual actions in the past.  None.

Take a look for yourself at what has happened in Syria.  Must of Syria is destroyed, the population forced out to make the land free for conquest.  Have you not paid attention?

All of those countries were important allies of Russia.  All were abandoned.  Some even suffered having Russia vote FOR santions or no fly zones against them in the UN.  Others suffered when Russia gave it's consent by refusing to vote against santions or bombs being dropped on them.  E Ukraine, you mean the noble fighters of EUke who were twice positioned to destroy a trapped large portion of the WUke army but suffered through Putin forcing them to agree to a cease fire and allowing the trapped army to safely withdraw, only to attack again.

The list may be one of shame for one side but it is definently a list of failure and abandonment by Russia.

The Russians have skin in the game in exactly 2 places - Syria because of their strategic base at Tartus, and Ukraine for the same strategic military base situation, plus, Ukraine is filled with native Russians and the have a major interest there.

Russia wisely avoids foreign entanglements.  Maybe they studied America's Founding Father's.  Too bad our leaders don't bother to do the same.

Just watch what happens over the next 4-6 weeks.

Putin doesn't need to "take" Syria. He only needs to protect Russia's sea port and prevent the US from taking it. Keeping Assad alive gives him legitimacy to do this, so that's on the list as well.

Conquer and pacify the country? No need. From the Russian perspective, Syria, like the Ukraine, can be warzones for the next thousand years.

He's playing defence, not offence. He's Russian, not American or Israeli, remember.

Well, yes, to Zionists, I guess they are like all the rest of us non-jews..... sub-human goyim to be used as chattel.  Thanks for confirming this attitude for us all to see.

Below is a quote from “Ovadia,” the beloved head of the Council of Torah Sages and the leading Sephardi “adjudicator” (which is what the Jerusalem Post called him)

“Goyim were born only to serve us. Without that, they have no place in the world – only to serve the People of Israel,” he said in his weekly Saturday night sermon on the laws regarding the actions non-Jews are permitted to perform on Shabbat.

According to Yosef, the lives of non-Jews in Israel are safeguarded by divinity, to prevent losses to Jews.

“In Israel, death has no dominion over them... With gentiles, it will be like any person – they need to die, but [God] will give them longevity. Why? Imagine that one’s donkey would die, they’d lose their money.

This is his servant... That’s why he gets a long life, to work well for this Jew,” Yosef said."

http://www.newrepublic.com/blog/the-spine/78490/goyim-were-born-only-ser...

Is it any wonder that jews have found themselves hated, despised, and driven from one country after another throughout history as citizens become aware of the parasites in their midst?  Most of the world has no use for fanatics in any religion.  So long as they are dispersed and kept in small communities, they can't cause too much of a problem for the rest of us.  What we have spawned in the ME, with the insertion of a "jewish" state in the middle of the muslim world is nothing less than a threat to the survival of mankind.  There will be no peace with this open sore spreading the infection of 'my god' vs 'your god' throughout the entire region.

My prayer today is simple - Oh Lord, spare me from these sick and twisted little people of all "religions", who somehow think they are chosen by you to kill and maim in your name.  These pathetic simpletons, who believe you are so weak that you need them to act on your behalf to steal for for their benefit in your name.  Amen.

Russia can liquidate Israel from within its own borders. There is no need to move the assets closer.

I am willing to bet that the reason for Russian combat troops is more as a shield than anything else.
France wants to start bombing Syria. I believe that so does UK and US.
Not likely to happen if by doing so they will risk hitting Russian military.
Assad has no power to retaliate against Paris or London, but Putin could turn them into a pile of rubble....and that is without nuclear weapons.

It has been reported that Russia does not view the EU and US as reliable trade partners nor honorable. This might be their "fuck you, you are done ruling the world" moment.

But as they won't survive as some Monolithic Society.

At least that's what the jews in the West say about our countries.

Time for Putin to invade Israel

Putin is too smart for that. Isn't he? Well maybe not.

Netanyahoo will be visiting America after his trip to Russia. I wonder what messages he will be carrying.

They are breeding out the only race of people who have challenged their mission.  If this certain race were to discard JUDEO-xtianity and utilize it's more atavistic integral capabilities then jooz would be kicked out of nations, as they have been dozens of time before.  The only mistake was letting them back in.

Studying the Eldar Futhark is much more productive then studying the biased history of foreign spiritual fairytales.

Both Putin and Bibi have nothing to lose and everything to gain from this meeting. At least the two heads of state are talking, unlike our kenyan president and the whole flock of GOP candidates except Trump.

Let's not forget about the New Silk Road from China to the Mediterranean.

We should also keep in mind the pipelines through Ukraine and Turkey.

US drilling oil in Golan (used to be Syria.)

Biden selling gas in Ukraine.

Gas off coast of Gaza.

US is holding Japan captive as a way to crash Chinese economy... if neccessary. Desperate last chance threat.

Everybody is going all in. This can't end well.

Oh yeah, and nukes in Poland.

France and Germany dumping the US, bowing to Putin, they know the score...

America’s “coalition” may well be splitting apart. With Turkey opening the floodgates into Europe and their carpet bombing of Kurds both inside Turkey and in Iraq and Syria, Germany, Russia and France are now looking to Assad.
