Putin: Friend Or Foe In Syria?

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Patrick Buchanan via Buchanan.org,

What Vladimir Putin is up to in Syria makes far more sense than what Barack Obama and John Kerry appear to be up to in Syria.

The Russians are flying transports bringing tanks and troops to an air base near the coastal city of Latakia to create a supply chain to provide a steady flow of weapons and munitions to the Syrian army.

Syrian President Bashar Assad, an ally of Russia, has lost half his country to ISIS and the Nusra Front, a branch of al-Qaida.

Putin fears that if Assad falls, Russia’s toehold in Syria and the Mediterranean will be lost, ISIS and al-Qaida will be in Damascus, and Islamic terrorism will have achieved its greatest victory.

Is he wrong?

Winston Churchill famously said in 1939: “I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest.”

Exactly. Putin is looking out for Russian national interests.

And who do we Americans think will wind up in Damascus if Assad falls? A collapse of that regime, not out of the question, would result in a terrorist takeover, the massacre of thousands of Alawite Shiites and Syrian Christians, and the flight of millions more refugees into Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey — and thence on to Europe.

Putin wants to prevent that. Don’t we?

Why then are we spurning his offer to work with us?

Are we still so miffed that when we helped to dump over the pro-Russian regime in Kiev, Putin countered by annexing Crimea?

Get over it.

Understandably, there is going to be friction between the two greatest military powers. Yet both of us have a vital interest in avoiding war with each other and a critical interest in seeing ISIS degraded and defeated.

And if we consult those interests rather than respond to a reflexive Russophobia that passes for thought in the think tanks, we should be able to see our way clear to collaborate in Syria.

Indeed, the problem in Syria is not so much with the Russians — or Iran, Hezbollah and Assad, all of whom see the Syrian civil war correctly as a fight to the finish against Sunni jihadis.

Our problem has been that we have let our friends — the Turks, Israelis, Saudis and Gulf Arabs — convince us that no victory over ISIS can be achieved unless and until we bring down Assad.

Once we get rid of Assad, they tell us, a grand U.S.-led coalition of Arabs and Turks can form up and march in to dispatch ISIS.

This is neocon nonsense.

Those giving us this advice are the same “cakewalk war” crowd who told us how Iraq would become a democratic model for the Middle East once Saddam Hussein was overthrown and how Moammar Gadhafi’s demise would mean the rise of a pro-Western Libya.

When have these people ever been right?

What is the brutal reality in this Syrian civil war, which has cost 250,000 lives and made refugees of half the population, with 4 million having fled the country?

After four years of sectarian and ethnic slaughter, Syria will most likely never again be reconstituted along the century-old map lines of Sykes-Picot.

Partition appears inevitable.

And though Assad may survive for a time, his family’s days of ruling Syria are coming to a close.

Yet it is in America’s interest not to have Assad fall — if his fall means the demoralization and collapse of his army, leaving no strong military force standing between ISIS and Damascus.

Indeed, if Assad falls now, the beneficiary is not going to be those pro-American rebels who have defected or been routed every time they have seen combat and who are now virtually extinct.

The victors will be ISIS and the Nusra Front, which control most of Syria between the Kurds in the northeast and the Assad regime in the southwest.

Syria could swiftly become a strategic base camp and sanctuary of the Islamic State from which to pursue the battle for Baghdad, plot strikes against America and launch terror attacks across the region and around the world.

Prediction: If Assad falls and ISIS rises in Damascus, a clamor will come — and not only from the Lindsey Grahams and John McCains — to send a U.S. army to invade and drive ISIS out, while the neocons go scrounging around to find a Syrian Ahmed Chalabi in northern Virginia.

Then this nation will be convulsed in a great war debate over whether to send that U.S. army to invade Syria and destroy ISIS.

And while our Middle Eastern and European allies sit on the sidelines and cheer on the American intervention, this country will face an anti-war movement the likes of which have not been seen since Col. Lindbergh spoke for America First.

In making ISIS, not Assad, public enemy No. 1, Putin has it right.

It is we Americans who are the mystery inside an enigma now.

Really?

ISIS was made in America. Obama has a multispectrum war ongoing with Putin.  How can he be a friend in Syria?

ISIS: The jihadist movement stamped “Made in America”

For three years, the US, along with the Gulf states and Turkey, poured billions into “opposition” groups, supposedly to unnamed “moderates,” but in reality to Al Qaeda-linked Sunni groups such as al-Nusra and ISIS to spearhead a sectarian war. The US, Turkey and Jordan have operated a base in Jordan where US instructors trained dozens of ISIS members. In an article last year, the New York Times confirmed that the CIA assisted Arab governments and Turkey by airlifting weaponry to these groups in Jordan and Turkey. The Guardian reported last March that British and French instructors were also involved.

Other ISIS members were trained near Incirlik Air Base near Adana, Turkey, where US forces are based. After completing their training, they went to Syria and later Iraq

This is the very same shit as if I stockpile some food and water as per FEMA suggestions (Go to their website) I'm doing my patriotic duty, but if I do my patriotic duty the NSA/DoJ/Whothefukever, says I'm a prepper and as a prepper, I'm a terrorist

Apart from the (Now proven as false flag) chemical incidents, I still fail to see precisely what Assad ahs done to deserve such treatment. Other than "It's neocon policy"?

Americans seem to be in complete denial about the refugee problem in Europe, and even Europeans don't really see the cause of the problem because the European MSM are just propoganda machines. This is entirely a US-created problem. Go home and fix your own problems, which are indeed very substantial.

Bull.

Learn to use the language to communicate reality instead of false narratives.

The Debt-Money Monopolist controlled Vichy government doesn't represent me as an American. They **hate** Americans more than they hate anyone else.

Proclaiming that I support their criminal policies is a lie - and stop lying about me and millions of others.

"America" doesn't exist, people exist and the average person has no say in their Debt-Money Monopoly financed government's decisions.

All he has to do is shut down Debt-Money Monopolist supply lines and ISIS is toast.

It isn't like these 50,000 fighters are working 9-5 in munitions and arms plants.

The Debt-Money Monopolist calculus has to be whether the average Westerner is so disengaged with reality that they can actively defend ISIS / al Qaeda supply lines they've been running for years.

How many CIA / MI5 transport planes have to be shot down supplying ISIS before their is a PR nightmare?  I know, they would lie and claim Russia was aggressive.  But are the American people THAT stupid and out of touch?

It is a close call.

The USA is no enigma nor mystery. It is a 100% corrupted country in the pockets of the wealthiest elites in the world (The Tribe). It is the tool of the Zionists of Israel. If you ever wonder why The Tribe has been persecuted for millenia and expelled from pretty much every country in Europe at one time or another, there is your answer. They are parasites that crave power and wealth and will never shy away from spilling other peoples blood to get it.

As if it is not confusing enough already:

Israel, for some strange reason seems to think foaming at the mouth Sunni terrorists who behead entire villages are less of a threat than a Shiite arc of stable nations stretching from Iran through Iraq and into Syria. Maybe they're right. Could it be that a shadowy Nazi conspiracy to build nuclear weapons a la Rapallo in proxy states for Germany is what is really behind the whole push to destroy the Shiite Alliance?

So maybe the Zionists think, "OK, we need to focus on one threat at a time. Nuclear capable nation states are a bigger threat than murderous Toyota truck drivers in black pajamas." B theut of course, they would be wrong. Because those same Takfiri/Salfist terrorists hate Isarel more than they hate Shiites and Christians the are currently beheading and raping (maybe in that order). If there is a shadowy Nazi conspiracy, the Nazis will simply work with the new bosses the same as the old bosses, and the nuclear threat wil only get worse, not better.  Iran, if it had a nuke, would use it as a deterrent, to balance Israeli nukes; but a radical Wahabist would use it as an offensive weapon in an attack against the Zionist Entity. That being the case, Israel will have no choice, if ISIS wins, but to preemptively nuke entire nations.

It's just another reason Israel is on a dead end road, heading straight for its own nuclear Sampson Option at breakneck speed.

Well, Churchill's mom, was a Jew from Brooklyn, NY. That detail of his biography would be a revelation for many I reckon -- so that puff was an "enigma" himself.

Russian "riddle" is not any different, in principle, from that of any other country occupied by ZOG, i.e. the local goyim population is oppressed by chosenites. The only difference is that Russia has been a battlefield of competing chosenite clans for years.

Israel has discovered huge natural gas fields off its coast.

But they need to pipe it to Europe.

Qatar and other Middle East countries also need to pipe their natural gas to Europe.

The United States does not want Germany to ally itself with Russia because they could challange the US sphere of influence.

But Russia has a practical monopoly of natural gas to Europe.

Russia is the master of Syria and will not permit Assad to allow a natural gas pipeline through Syria to Europe.

Solution: Overthrow Assad. That's why the US is at war in Syria.

Churchill deliberately starved 4 million Indians during World War II accounting for more than 90% of the casualties of the British Empire during that war:

How Sir Winston Churchill Starved 4 Million Indians

Madhusree Mukerjee’s book [Churchill’s Secret War: The British Empire and the Ravaging of India during World War II, New York, Basic Books, 2010] is not a denunciation of British rule of India, but a meticulous chronicling of the role of the British Raj in furthering a famine in Bengal, and suppressing the fact that this deliberate holocaust took 4 million lives. British historians, including Sir Winston Churchill in his five-volume memoir, glossed over this rather ‘irrelevant incident.’

British torture in Kenya during the Mau Mau revolt in the 1950s:

Interrogation under torture was widespread. Many of the men were anally raped, using knives, broken bottles, rifle barrels, snakes and scorpions. A favourite technique was to hold a man upside down, his head in a bucket of water, while sand was rammed into his rectum with a stick. Women were gang-raped by the guards. People were mauled by dogs and electrocuted. The British devised a special tool which they used for first crushing and then ripping off testicles. They used pliers to mutilate women's breasts. They cut off inmates' ears and fingers and gouged out their eyes. They dragged people behind Land Rovers until their bodies disintegrated. Men were rolled up in barbed wire and kicked around the compound.

When the Malaysian plane was shot down in the Ukraine it fell into rebel territory friendly to the Russians yet the black box made it's way to the west and the contents were not publicly revealed.  Indeed.  Whose side are the Russians on?  "Modern Russian weapons" in Syria.  This sounds like a great pretext for massive MIC expenditures.  Orwell had it right.

It actually fell into Ukraine - not Russia - so Putin could not get the black box without opening up claims of Russian tampering. Putin let the West have the black box knowing that it would never be released - but also knowing that because it shows that Western Ukraine did it - that the issue would die down. Why? Because if the West did not let it die down, they would have to release that evidence.

I doubt that it's in Russian national interest that Russian elite:

1.) sell out Russian land to China (after those 3 generation that territory will be de facto rules by Chinese)

2.) steal away Russian tax payers money with corrupt government deals: again & again and spend that on luxury life style: again and again and again (while people in Russia suffer drastic decline and fight in line for free potato and apple).

3.) attacks opposition so they are not able to take part in normal democratic elections

4.) censored internet

5.) decreases human rights in Russia and  brainwashes and manipulates with Russians using controlled main stream media

List goes on and on. So I doubt Russian elite is doing anything in nation interests. Rather their own interest and nothing more.

"decreases human rights in Russia and brainwashes and manipulates with Russians using controlled main stream media"

no, human rights in Russia actually improved a lot as compared to Russia under Yeltsin, where there were almost no human rights and Russians were dying of hunger or freezing.

as for the media in Russia, if you checked out the facts, you would know that a great majority of media in Russia are actually controlled by the West, they support anglo-zionist ideas and are extremely anti-Putin. There are only very few state-controlled media in Russia. Besides, any Russian can also watch BBC and CNN, which are quite freely broadcasting in Russia.

This issue of freedom of speech in Russia always gets me. Why do so many Westeners believe their own propaganda without checking out the facts? But, I have to admit, I was also stunned, when I first visited Russia. I could not comprehend, why so many pro-Western (and anti-Putin) media are allowed to work in Russia. Well, probably because Putin in reality is no dictator and does not want to become one??? Probably, because he trusts the wisdom of his people and allows them to make their own decisions?

Decent article, but, as usual, suffering from conventional thinking and a fundamentally-textbookish underlying assumption.  The people who rule the USA are not serving the interests of the American people, nor even the interests of the American Empire.  They have their own agenda, which could even include the downfall of America and its replacement by another puppet regime.  Yes, to risk nuclear war over Syria, to arrogantly assume that they have a right to say that Assad must go because they want a pipeline or because the fascist government of Israel wants to fragment and weaken each and every Arab state, is not only bad strategy--it is treason.

But that is not the question for them.  For them, there is only one question:  Does toppling Assad, or bailing in and out banks, or killing their own collaborators in Maidan, enrich and empower them even more, while enslaving us, their enemies?

So here is a prediction of my own, far nearer the mark than Buchanan's: Our Invisible Government--and their puppets in DC--will never collaborate with the Russians in Syria.  They will push the Russians to the limit.  The Russians must by now draw a line in the sand, to protect vital national interests.  If our rulers think they can personally survive and thrive after a nuclear war, then nuclear war we shall have.  If they think they cannot thrive after a nuclear war, then they will back off for now and wait for the day they can prevail.

Why would he never work again? He does not work in the USA, he can say what he wants:-) Besides, Putin himself have made some interesting remarks in the recent years, like for example that: "85% of the first government of the Soviet Union were Jews" in his speech to Jews, while opening a Jewish museum. It made quite a stir, because these were things that had been a taboo in Russia until that moment.

Putin's exact daring words: "I thought about something just now: The decision to nationalize this library was made by the first Soviet government, whose composition was 85 percent Jewish. The politicians on the predominantly Jewish Soviet government were guided by false ideological considerations and supported the arrest and repression of Jews, Russian Orthodox Christians, Muslims and members of other faiths. Thankfully, those ideological goggles and faulty ideological perceptions collapsed. And today, we are essentially returning these books to the Jewish community with a happy smile.”

The only hidden riddle inside this mystery has one dirty name that unravels the Gordian knot : GHAWAR OIL.

And the enigma is the ongoing US neo-con/ Wahhabi Saud alliance initiated by "Dear Henry", reinforced by GWB; as for the mystery its the CIA/Sunni plays to destroy Syrac and its people back to the Stone ages; just like the previous US neo-con riddle of Al Qaeda creation in Taliban land of Afghan.

Its happening before our eyes and all Western countries are party to it since 9/11 Saudi led infliction justified burning up the world in "war on terror", as the enigmatic excuse for raping the oil nations of ME who didn't play ball with Uncle Sam's imperial dictat.

Putin, who is no democrat, is not party to this criminal scam although he is party to others which PALE in comparison to Pax Americana's world rampage since the CIA became FRONT PAGE in 1953 (Mossadegh's Iran).

Why the US did not change tack after fall of Berlin Wall and revert to world democracy that respects the aspirations of Emerging Nations is the true mystery to which there is only one answer : American Hubris!

CAN ANYONE ANSWER THIS???

If the Qatari pipeline is really the underlying reason for this proxy war, then why won't the Gulf states bypass Syria?

There's TWO other options:

1. GULF - Saudi Arabia - Iraq - Turkey - Bulgaria - EUROPE

2. GULF - Saudi Arabia - Egypt - Greece(by sea) - EUROPE

I'm not saying that TPTB would let Assad go anyways, but they certainly can get their pipeline through other means. Also what about the fact that Qatar now does LNG(liquified nat gas) which can be shipped by sea to Europe. Im not aware of the exact quantities which can go through ship vs pipeline, but sounds to me like it's not just the pipeline in play! I think it's just general proxy war against Russia's last real ally and only real port in the Meditteranean. Thoughts?

Gas pipelines are a secondary priority to MIC spending.

Sun, 09/20/2015 - 11:51 | 6571352 WhyWait

Stif, I agree completely.  The pipeline issue is real but scondary, and those claiming that's what Middle East politics are about are engaging in reductionism, like those who say it's all about peak oil, it's all about the Jews or it's all about war profits.

Ultimately I too would reduce it to one central issue: the power and profits of the AngloAmerican Empire ant its billionaire owners, facing a profound financial and economic crisis compounded by internal rot, and the imperative to expand and take total control or die, in a world where the main remaining bit of space into which they can expand (and perhaps gain another few good years) is publicly owned property.

The billionaire class's search for public property to sieze and digest shows up everywhere, from fights over mineral rights in Yellostone Park and privatizing the public schools to onership of municipal waterworks, but by far the largest chunks of public property - and the largest concentration of state power not fully controlled by the Masters of the Universe - still lie in the Former Soviet Union, Iran and China.

Fifty years ago, Yugolsavia, Albania, most of Eastern Europe, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Egypt, South Yemen and Algeria also belonged to the block of public-property-rich nations not controlled - or not fully controlled - by the Empire.  The people of some of these states or former states are still able to put up some resistance, but among all of those, the only real holdout where the resistance to the Empire still holds state power is Syria.

Most of these were multi-ethnic, multi-cultural states.  The key tools of the Empire for rendering and subduing them have been military threats, corruption, pseudo-revolutions motivated by Hollywood propaganda, but most crucially ethnic and nationalist conflicts - sometimes ancient fault lines revived, sometimes (as with the Russian/Ukrainian conflict) purely fabricated.

Ironically, the first big losers in the Empire's war of conquest - roughly between 1949 and 1980 - were the many ancient communities of Jews who had been living peacefully throughout the Moslem world for 1000 years.  Now it is the turn of the many ancient communities of Christians to be sacrificed on the Empire's alter.

The Empire and its apologists may weep crocodile tears, but there is no room for sentiment in their battle to expand into the Earth's last remaining spaces, digest its remaining resources and crush all remaining resistance. As most ZH readers understand, in the end the Empire will die anyway. The ultimate issue is this: will it take the rest of us with it into oblivion?  Our survival - and the human enterprise - will be reborn not from its ashes, but from our resistance. That rebirth is a process, one which is ongoing now, even as we seem to be losing ground.

I don't know what part the governments of Russia and China will play in the years ahead, but so far, corrupt as they may be, they seem to be driven by their circumstances to stand on the side of humanity. I was appalled when they let Libya go, but am certainly grateful that they are standing by Syria.

I used to be in the Putin cheer squad too- he's certainly a lot more palatable than the weak, effeminate, muslim bathhouse barry or inbred, retarded hick Dubya. But yet it is evident that Putin is in the NWO camp with the rest of them- he regularly meets with his BFF/ handler Kissinger, and just look at the terrible false flag FSB apartment bombings that helped vault him to power. And as Russians have told me, he's radically changed Russian society in the last few years with neo-liberal-style new laws- although at least he won't accept the rainbow flag being raised over the Kremlin.

Now it seems that TPTB want to take America and Europe down a few pegs, and the rest of the world is cheering about it giving America's horrible imperialism and hypocrisy over the last couple of decades, but it's still all part of the script. The bush-beating of welfare-seeking jihadi's into Europe is almost complete. and Putin's making a monkey out of Obama on the world stage, even as Russia's (and China's) own economy is driven to the wall. A Fed rate rise to destroy the US economy should help complete the picture, and we will all be ready for the Zio dream where Israel is the only Super-power and the other nations of the world are fragmented, easily manageable substates, with the UN as world government.

Great post until the last sentence

Israel will not be  Superpower.

The world will hate Israel and all nations will come against it.

Thanks for helping with that.

Which means you really don't have a clue who the real enemy is.

Maybe, it wouldn't be the first time the elites have dumped their kin as misdirection. But why then do most of the worlds oligarchs hold Israeli passports?

Buchanan must have read my post yesterday. Russia is in Syria to save it's last bastion in the Mid east.

In the case of the US, its most dangerous enemy is within its own borders and it has been that way since 1913.  102 years of deadly toxicity eating away at its constitution, its morals, its integrity, its truthfulness, its credibility, its common sense and on and on.  It is a lying international gangster state now, with blood of millions of its murdered and maimed victims from Dresden to Hiroshima and all points in between.  It is peopled by a puny race of ignorant, propagandized "it doesn't affect me" types who year after year applaud and crack wise at the spectacle of having all their rights eviscerated.  ITheir main desire is for moar entertainment and moar political soap opera to giggle at.

It's fun to see the Russians roll out their hardware .... impressive stuff .... but, have you looked at a map of Syria .... Assad is in deep doo doo .... I love to see Islamists killed .... by each other or by others .... but, Putins timing smacks of desperation !

I agree with Putin seeing the desperation of Assad's position - which is why he is sending help. But in terms of deep do-do, the roles can quickly be reversed. It only takes a couple helicopter gunships to clear large swathes of desert. The key thing to watch for is whether Assad actually does more than throw missiles at ISIS/rebels. If he starts to re-take oilfields, airfields, and towns then you know the Russians are serious.

I am pretty sure he is looking for a big foot hold.

I would like to see Assad stay for the sake of various ethnic groups that would be wiped out if he leaves.

But Assad has also played both sides

He has assisted Iran for many years in hosting a safe place for terrorists to hang out.

So what goes around comes around

I really enjoy listening to Kerry and the rest of the stooges calling for a quick end to the Civil War in Syria. Of course - the 'end' in their minds has to be that Assad loses...

Well, I went to work in Amaan today, APCs with M60s and special troops with M16s are all over the workplace. These guys in the APCs have on full armor.

Hmmm, is something up?

This whole damn area is a powder keg.

Hopefully, Vlad will do what the Amerikaners don't do, and that's chop off Daesh heads for a change. If this escalates, the Russians will rip thru these fuckers like shit thru a goose.

When are the American people going to stop sleep walking through life? We ought to be thanking God Putin is leading Russia. He is so much wiser and strategic in his views than our bunch in DC. Israel, through its American think tank, PNAC, led us into the Middle East. Anyone who doesn't understand this is clueless. We must purge our government of the 5th column Israel Firsters. It is the only way we survive.

In making ISIS, not Assad, public enemy No. 1, Putin has it right. It is we Americans who are the mystery inside an enigma now.

ISIS is obviously a USA CIA and Israel Mossad creation. Take that proper perception and view information accordingly.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Putin is basically sayin' to the west - you've had your chance - and you've made a mess of things. Let Russia give it a try.

And the Neocons are scared to death because if anyone's gonna die in the Middle East - it's gonna be by our bombs and not Russia's!

I don't agree with intervention unless a nation has actually attacked you. But very few countries follow that principle of non-aggression so it's moot.
