China's Man-Made Military Island Outposts, The Dramatic Before And After Photos

Tyler Durden's picture

There’s been no shortage of coverage both in these pages and elsewhere of China’s unprecedented land reclamation efforts in the Spratlys.

While China isn’t the first country to create new territory in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, the scope of Beijing’s development (some 3,000 acres) sets it apart and the construction of air strips and ports (not to mention the alleged stationing of artillery) has some of Washington’s regional allies especially concerned.

The prospect of China declaring a no-fly zone over its new islands and the idea that the PLA may attempt to curtail the movement of the US navy in and around the Spratly archipelago has only served to exacerbate the situation and now, Fiery Cross Reef has become something of a symbol for China’s maritime ambitions.

While we’ve presented plenty of images depicting China’s progress in turning reefs into sovereign territory, we’ve yet to show the before/after contrast and so, without further ado, here are the images which show the extent to which Beijing is literally redrawing maritime boundaries in disputed waters.

Big fucking deal. Murican Younighted States vaporized more land than that in the South Pacific during the fourties, fifties, and sixties atomic bomb tests to build all them there islands ten times over.

Unlike the US, which just sailed up to islands that were already big enough and told the local populations that they'd been conquered and were now property of the USA. e.g. Hawaii

I cant believe they didnt have enough ruining their own country. Now they have to take the life of some of the most beautiful reefs the world got to offer. In addition I guess they will make the entire area quite inaccessable.

Pretty Cool.

Similar Parental Situation, and even born in the same Location.  Since he's a General Engineering Major (we all Minor in it), he was probably a Recruited Athlete.

Went NFO (aka, the "N"o "F"uture "O"utside the Navy), P-3s (Semper Per Diem - rcving Per Diem while on Deployment, since they ride planes ), pretty much the "Slacker" end of the Navy.

Yes, they hunt Subs; but they can only stay aloft for so many HOURS until they have to land on a large airfield with Hotels, Restaurants, Bars, and Local Amenities.

No offense; but the running theme is, that many a "recruited athlete" who made it through Annapolis by choosing the "Remedial" Majors like, General Engineering, Physical Science, and Oceanography; and end up making a 20-30Year Career in the Navy since they have "No Future Outside" (they don't - for the most part - get drafted into Pro Sports (and shouldn't - I don't mind extented Reserve Obligations when we're not at War), nor are they recruited for their shear talent).  The exceptions are for the case where their Leadership Acumen matches up with the Industry/Company requirements.

Though we boast a Physically Fit (many a HS/College Level+ Potential) and very well rounded Student Body(Brigade), a P3 NFO with a General Engineering Major who Fenced fits the "Slacker Profile among the Alumni.

One of my schoolmates (similar situation, his Late Father was an Army O-6), did a similar Career Path post-Annapolis.  P-3s in Hawaii for most of his Career.

Knowing what I know now; and considering how much Tech goes into Fleet Units, I'd make a Hard Deck at (the old school) SAT Math 600+ for Applicants, then remove Remedial and "Bull" (Hum/SS) Majors.  No lowering the Bar for Minorities and Women.

That's not a popular decision; but the Academies are to prep up future Military Officers - they're not for the Sports Industry.  I don't care if the Academy loses Football Games to Regional Schools.  Considering the Caliber/Intellect Required of Graduates (and the Jobs they hold), they're better off joining up with the Ivy League.

I'm surprised to see a P-3 Type as a Full Admiral, let alone as COMPACFLT and CDRUSPACOM (Who changed these Acronyms, anyway?).  Figure they'd have a Fighter Jet Jockey / RIO,  or an Attack Jet B/N / Pilot representing those roles from the Aviation Community.

Good for him.  Are there any more JPNese American Flag Officers? Probably not.   Don't think they are more than a few - maybe a dozen - O-6s.

A tsunami wave is a displacement earth on the bottom of an ocean that sets in motion a displacement of an equal volume of water, as measured by change in height of the ocean (wave height) times length of the displacement in the earth (wavelength).

Tsunami waves are usually of the order of a hundred miles long but the displacment of the underlying rock is only a foot or two.   This long shallow wave that is only 1 to 2 feet tall won't interact with the tiny atolls (which are much smaller than the wavelength of the tsunami and therefore 'bend around them' just as radio waves bend around buildings.   Assuming the Chinese have designed the atolls to surviving storm conditions, they will easily survive tsunami waves.

When the tsunami wave approaches a long shallow coastline, it will interact with the coastline, so that the wavelength becomes reduced by compression from the rising ocean bottom.   This causes the height of the tsunami wave to build up inversely as the wavelength decreases, so that a wave height of 20 to 40 feet can be reached.

"PLA may attempt to curtail the movement of the US navy in and around the Spratly archipelago has only served to exacerbate the situation" ?!?!?

Let the Americans go where they will or you will have started a war by denying them such?

Damn those antagonistic defenders. How dare they defend their waters. The feud with Japan is an artifice to shield the fact that the US has threatened Japan not to join the AIIB. And they thought the BRICS was a problem. No comparison.

If China can't play nice, the US will crush Japan and send China into a tailspin.

You don't seem to understand the concept of 'water' vs. that of 'land'. International waters start 12 miles away from land. An island cannot be surrounded by international waters unless nobody claims it. Japan is also claiming some of these islands. So nobody gets them? Buy a map.

So its pretty much an aircraft carrier that can't move.

I dont understand why they didnt just save themselves the money and build like 10 super aircraft carriers.

If given the choice between giant immobile rock or a fleet of new battleships, destroyers, aircraft carriers, its a no brainer for me... an armed mobile nuclear platform is far superior to a rock that cant move and will have the shit bombed out of it in any major conflict.

If a war started these islands would be wiped out in hours.

In a war, the aircraft carriers will have a lifespan of 20 minutes. All on the bottom with their planes crew, guns, missiles, etc. An aircraft carrier is an obsolete relic from another era.

Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, India, Pakistan, all have ahd these unstoppable antishipping missiles for a long time. They can be mounted on battleships, cargo ships, fishing boats, airplanes, land, or submarines. China has recently developed new ones that drop in from space at 5X the speed of sound.

An aircraft carrier is like an old, fat white guy walking in the hood on a hot Saturday night.

Aircraft carriers cannot attach any legal claim to the seabed they float over.

http://www.pcacases.com/web/view/7

Building the bases is probably the most expensive legal defense in history (against a Philipine argument that will be made during the arbitration).  If the Chinese continue to boycott the proceedings or lose, it makes enforcement of any award problematic (see Nicaragua v. United States).  In the meantime the rule of the game is you snooze, you lose (see Cambodia v. Thailand).  If you ever have to write an opinion that can be summarized as "if you want to protect your legal claim and case, you need to up the body count and kill some people ASAP" - you'll realize just how fucking insane the system is...
