FBI Recovers Personal Emails Allegedly Deleted From Hillary Clinton's Personal Server
When Hillary's email scandal first broke, the Democrat frontrunner for president explained that roughly half of the 60,000 emails that had been housed on her private server were screened by her and deleted as they contained personal information such as "planning for Chelsea’s wedding, yoga routines and condolence messages." Her staff then turned over paper copies of the remaining work-related emails to the State Department for processing and archiving, with some 8000 emails posted for public consumption. But a problem emerged in March when the State Department determined that dozens of the e-mails contained classified information.
It is this discovery, as well as questions about how and why these classified emails were housed on a private server, that prompted FBI the launch an inquiry into what the "personal" emails may have contained.
Today, as Bloomberg reports, the FBI has recovered the personal and work-related e-mails from the private computer server used by Hillary Clinton during her time as secretary of state, and which had allegedly been wiped clea. The FBI obtained Clinton’s server from the Colorado-based company managing it.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s success at salvaging personal e-mails that Clinton said had been deleted raises the possibility that the Democratic presidential candidate’s correspondence eventually could become public. The disclosure of such e-mails would likely fan the controversy over Clinton’s use of a private e-mail system for official business.
Outside computer specialists have said the FBI has the technical capability to recover deleted e-mails. The exact number of personal e-mails recovered by the FBI could not be learned.
Bloomberg's source adds that once the e-mails have been extracted, a group of agents has been separating personal correspondence and passing along work-related messages to agents leading the investigation.
Clinton’s attorney, David Kendall, did not respond to phone calls or e-mails seeking comment. Nick Merrill, a spokesman, said, “We’ve cooperated to date and will continue to do so, including answering any questions about this that anyone including the public may have.”
The discovery adds more clouds to Hillary's campaign who has seen her standing in the polls slide since the email scandal broke, particularly in regards to questions about her trustworthiness. The problem becomes one of timing and when the FBI will reveal the findings of its probe. According to Bloomberg the bureau’s probe is expected to last at least several more months. That timeline would push any final determination closer to the Democratic presidential primary calendar, which kicks off Feb. 1 with the Iowa caucuses. Any new, unapalatable revelations - implicitly ones which will layer on incremental lies by the former Secretary of State - will only make her already shaky campaign even more tenuous.
It also digs up issues that were supposedly already buried. As a reminder, when asked if and how she had wiped her supposedly secure server, Hillary responded "What, like with a cloth or something?"
In retrospect, the discovery that the FBI was able to recover the deleted emails casts even more doubt on her campaign's claim that the server had been secure and had been wiped clean, the implication being that if the FBI could access it, so could any modestly computer literate third-party. Computer experts are already panning today's news:

So yes, they work hard to *create* versions of that deleted emails to repair her damaged image by showing that just some inoffensive girly type of stuff moved from that plate over the wire.

Actually they are just dragging out the investigation to get a feel for the other candidates. If one of her opponents (R or D) gathers momentum and appears likely to win she will be found guilty in this scandal. If, however, all her opposition remain weak and she looks slated to win, this whole investigation will be wrapped up with no wrongdoing. Can't have the new boss pissed off at you from the start, or she'll pull away the funding teat. A couple more months and it will be clear.

I know I'm leaning on an open door but this entire saga is fishy. An average high shool student could recover deleted files from a hard drive unless the space occupied by those files was overwritten with zeros. All that happens when a file is deleted is that it's flag is deleted from the file allocation table (or the equivalent in NTFS, OSX or Linux). the file contents remain intact until overwritten. Simple recovery software will simply reinstate the flag in the FAT and presto, the file is back again. Emails within a .pst or .ost file are a little more tricky but in relative terms still fairly simple. Is she really that stupid/arrogant?

Maybe some of her staff got so fed up with her that they decided to overlook some basic technicality in doing their work and hoped that one day the world would be able to see her for what she is; this may well be karma at work.

Good forensics software will recover through a 0/1/0/0 drive wipe sequence.
FBI as of 2011 could recover data 7 wipes deep. And last I heard they could do it 14 wipes 'deep'
How to make sure the FBI never recovers it.
Physical destruction of the drive. Keep a dummy server on standby.
Her drives were heavily encrypted. FBI sent them over to NSA, 2 months later, poof unencrypted.
I don't much believe they can in general recover once sectors are overwritten just a time or two, especially if the sectors had already been overwritten ten or twenty times before the emails were ever written.
Maybe if you take a virgin drive, write something, then overwrite it a couple of times, forensics can find little slivers or ghosts that survive, in some cases, if they're lucky, a sector here or there, plus or minus ECC.
But of course there's no reason to trust it anyway, take it out, torch it, and spread the ashes, just as H. P. Lovecraft used to recommend with his horrors.

Not that they don't have those emails SOMEWHERE...just that they aren't able to FIND them as easily as one would think. And never certain they have them ALL.

I would argue they (thought) they did know how to delete data, completely, off a hard drive. Based on current known and public DoD secure erasure procedures.
I would like to know more about what equipment and procedure the FBI used to recover the data. I think that's a bigger story. That would tell you your data is now not secure no matter what accepted secure erase methodology you employ.
Which is why I have ALL hard drives, server and PC, go through a shredder. They come to me, I take the drives out to the truck, and I get to watch them get eaten in bad-ass shredder. I think it could handle all the politicos in DC as well, with enough appetite left over for all the bankers...
Yes, that would do it. But why didn't she (her team) do it? The insinuation of a cover-up would be the same, whether she physical destroyed the drives or wiped the drives. The excuse would have been the drive or drives had failed and following good security procedures, her team physically shredded the drives. That would actually make more sense than wiping the drives.
If she (and her team) team are that incompetent, how was she able to even do her job as Secretary of State and God forbid, if elected POTUS.
I think there is more at play here and details will probably never be delivered to the American public.

Many ways to deal with hard drives to insure the data is gone. Email transits many servers during it's lifetime though. The NSA could have simply produced a nice hard drive with all the email in a nice little indexed directory. Perhaps that is what the FBI "recovered"?

Hardrives are pretty damned cheap and easy to replace these days. If they really wanted to destroy evidence why not just take out the drive, smash it with a hammer then burn it?

For the record: write 1's over 0's >10 times (DBAN), then pulverize to DoD spec, then mix it in with n or greater drives you bought on eBay and pulverized then have a confetti party in a boat. (Where n is the number of drives you have). If law enforcement ever accuses you of knowingly destroying evidence point at Hillary and the IRS.
