Russia Threatens To Deploy Ballistic Missiles In Retaliation For US Nuclear Escalation

Tyler Durden's picture

On Tuesday we noted - with some alarm - that the US is set to deliver 20 new nuclear bombs to Germany, each of which has four times the destructive power of the one that was dropped on Hiroshima.

For his part, Hans Kristensen, Director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, said the move blurs the line between tactical and strategic nuclear weapons,” while one member of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats warned that the “new attack options against Russia” constitute “a conscious provocation of [Germany’s] Russian neighbors.”

Of course, as we’ve documented extensively of late, NATO has never really been shy when it comes to “conscious provocations” of the Russians and that goes double in the wake of Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and subsequent support for the separatist movement in eastern Ukraine.

Still, war games are one thing, but nuclear escalations are entirely another and if ever there were a time when nuclear sabre rattling could prove especially dangerous it’s now, as the US and Russia are one “accident” away from open war in Syria.

Russia’s foreign ministry immediately condemned the delivery of the bombs to Germany, as spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (who's known for amusingly accurate depictions of US foreign policy) warned that the move represents an “infringement of Articles 1 and 2 of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.”

Well sure enough, The Kremlin is now hitting back. Here’s Reuters:

Russia may deploy Iskander ballistic missiles to its enclave of Kaliningrad if the United States upgrades its nuclear weapons in Germany, the Interfax news agency cited a military source as saying on Wednesday.

"A final decision well be taken after detailed analysis of the potential threat," the agency cited the source as saying.

What's an Iskander, you ask? Well, here's a helpful description from The Moscow Times:

The Iskander missile system is one of the most deadly weapons in the Russian arsenal. First fielded in the 1990s, the Iskander is a high-precision tactical ballistic missile system optimized for use at close ranges — under 500 kilometers.

Iskander missiles are capable of being loaded with nuclear warheads.

And here's an Iskander in action courtesy of RT:

We suppose this means the Pentagon may need to speed up its efforts to modernize US plans for a battle in the Baltics.

We'll close with the following from Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov discussing the possible US shipment to Germany:

“This is yet another step and, unfortunately a very serious step toward antagonizing the tenseness on the European continent. Unfortunately, if these plans come to light, with taking into consideration [Germany’s] Bundestag’s decision and so forth, one could say that they are steadfastly heading to establishing this. Of course, this may lead to a strategic imbalance in Europe and, therefore, naturally this will make Russia take according steps and countermeasures to establish parity because, naturally, this is not a step toward boosting stability, increasing trust, or providing security in Europe."

But Obama has a Nobel Peace Prize. He can do no wrong.  Besides, Putin is a demented "mass-murderer" per the Western free and fair press

Since the beginning of the week, the three most influential mass circulation newsmagazines of the United States, Britain, and Germany—Time, The Economist, and Der Spiegel—have published cover stories that combine wild accusations against Vladimir Putin with demands for a showdown with Russia.

The most striking and obvious characteristic of these cover stories is that they are virtually identical. The CIA has scripted them all. The stories employ the same insults and the same fabrications. They denounce Putin’s “web of lies.” The Russian president is portrayed as a “depraved” mass murderer.

Close. Some are on the diesel-electric subs they conned out of Germany.

Maybe one will end up in the hijacked Russian tanker, revealed to the world after the tanker is intercepted by the IDF. The nuke would then be taken to Israel for safe secure storage to ensure that it isn't acquired by a rogue state.

Geez, this stuff writes itself.

Tactical nukes are a different class of weapon. Smaller yield so damage can be focused on targets, used on the battlefield (rather than on cities) so already nobody cares, and easy to cover up because of all the other things blowing up and people evaporating in serious but conventional ways.

We might never see an exchange of strategic nukes, for all the reasons people point to. But we could very easily see an exchange of tactical nukes and I wonder if anyone would even know it happened until many years later.

The question then is, might a tactical strike somewhere escalate to a general strategic exchange, and I suppose the rational answer must be "don't know" but I think the practical answer is, no it would not.

With that background, I think the Russians have tactical nukes in Syria or will shortly. And might in Ukraine eventually, esp if the eastern part of that country votes for independence. This is probably behind the German gambit by the US/NATO.

Get ready. Shit might just get real 4 reelz.

Humans may choose to ignore the "dangers of cumulative nuclear fallout", but not its actual effects.

This is what happens when the reptile or primate part of the human brain takes control from the cognitive brain: The clever inventions of the latter are hijacked by the former. And then the mortal dangers exceeds the human wisdom to cope with them, in a way that is beneficial to the species and the planet.

I would like to know what the so-called 'Grown-ups' and people with financial, physical and civic courage are doing about it. I may be limited to remaining in the cyber world, but you are not and are free to take action. Are you ZH people taking action, or merely hoping that others will?

"...The question then is, might a tactical strike somewhere escalate to a general strategic exchange, and I suppose the rational answer must be "don't know" but I think the practical answer is, no it would not..."

Russia, U.S. and China have been over this many times, Cougar. Any use of atomic weapons will be treated exactly alike and responded to with atomic weapons. That's why the U.S. pretty much dropped development of tactical nukes. Using a 5kt weapon in the middle of nowhere is still going to start WWIII, guaranteed. That's especially true since Russia has very few (the Soviets stopped their program) and China supposedly never started. They even rejected the U.S. term 'tactical' and said they didnt' care how big/small, nukes were nukes, period. Germany's B61's W-80 dial-a-yield warheads can go down to 5 kt, but drop one on, say - Donbass - and Russia will let the Topols, Iskanders and Buluvas fly. That agreement was part of the non-proliferation talks way back when. 'Tactical nuke' and 'Neutron bomb' were big in Soviet times for protecting the Fulda Gap. Today, they're useless and expensive toys, and the warheads count towards your inventory. Each country would rather have a useful 350kt warhead in their inventory than a 1.5kt backpack nuke (presuming they declared both - but that would presume governments are honest).

That's how it's suppose to work by mutual understanding in theory. It apparently has worked so far. Your opinion may be more valid considering the general IQ of our government. You and I might not choose to use one, but I could see Pedophile Petraeus trying to use one.

"...But we could very easily see an exchange of tactical nukes and I wonder if anyone would even know it happened until many years later..."

The Consolidated Test Ban Treaty Organization has monitoring stations all across the globe. They can pick evidence of the smallest of nuclear explosions. Someone may try a small nuke and deny it was used (cough... Israel... cough) but the CTBTO will be able to trace the plume all the way across the globe. The only way to 'fool' the CTBTO is to set off so many nukes in sequence that the monitoring stations can't figure out which one was which. But then, nobody will be left to care. You might be able to avoid detection with a deep-earth penetrating nuke, but that's about it. Again, all theoretical - so your opinion is probably valid.

"...With that background, I think the Russians have tactical nukes in Syria or will shortly..."

Last anyone heard, Russia has no operational plans for using tactical nukes until AFTER WW III starts. Keep in mind they have a Typhoon-class sub just off the coast of Syria with 20 MIRV'd Buluvas, so they certainly have the ability to nuke anything there with ease. Russia (just like the U.S.) has plenty of conventional stuff to blow shit up. I can't think of anything ISIS would have that would call for a tactical nuke. A gigantic ISIS Toyota Hilux rally would be a juicy target, but Russia has plenty of iron for that.

I honestly think the next false flag will be Israel claiming Hezbollah or Iran nuked them. Remember when Israel was supposedly testing dirty bomb effects in their desert? Some speculated that it was in preparation for blowing a small nuke out there in conjunction with a massive explosion in some Israeli city. They would claim to have been nuked by whomever and there would be CTBTO 'proof', justifying an in-kind Israeli response. Which would be a phone call to the U.S. congress with the message: "Get to work you little bitches..."

I agree Russia has been building out it's strategic weapons, Max. I was referring to their tactical nuke development. They probably have leftovers from the cold war stashed away like artillery shells or maybe a few Tochka-U warheads, but they were never big fans of the concept. The Soviets philosophy was; "The bigger crater, the better." It was the U.S. chickenhawks that fantasized they could get away with 'limited' nuclear war. Nobody else on earth agreed.

As far at the sub off the Syrian coast, you're right: Debka is bullshit. On the other hand, I can't imagine Russia ever NOT having a nuke sub somewhere in the Medeterranian at all times. Not that it matters - a Russian sub in the Indian Ocean or North Atlantic simple means another seven minutes of ballistic flight time before impact.

And the Israeli scare-mongering about Russian invading Syria must have had some effect. Bibi wasn't executed the second he set foot on Russian soil, and Kerry pissed his pants and started blubbering about 'negotiations' with Russia. Unfortunately for our Israeli friends, the entire 'Russian Invasion' event backfired. Most of the world (besides ZATO) is cheering Russian involvement for taking out the trash in Syria. Who would count on the U.S. anymore? 75 freshly-trained and armed 'moderat rebels' for Division 30 defected to al Nusra within hours of leaving their U.S./Brit-run Turkish training camp.

The difference between a tactical nuke and a strategic nuke is the difference between a carpenter's hammer and a sledge hammer.

How do you tell the difference between a 1-kiloton and a 1-megaton missile installation? -- You can't.

An intercontinental ballistic missile from North Dakota gives Russia 10 to 15 minutes to decide to retaliate. A short-range but 1-megaton ballistic missile from Germany gives Russia 1 minute to decide. Thus the chance of an accidental all-out retaliatory strike is at least 100 times greater.

Then we all fry.

"...An intercontinental ballistic missile from North Dakota gives Russia 10 to 15 minutes to decide to retaliate..."

You're confusing time-to-impact with time-to-decide. Neither the U.S. nor Russia will wait more than a couple of minutes to retaliate if they think they're under attack. If Russia sees a launch in North Dakota, there is ZERO reason for them to think one of our subs isn't also launching (or getting ready to launch) on Moscow from the Mediterranean. Time-of-flight about four minutes. Same for hundreds of other targets in Russia, China and the U.S.

I know it seems that way....but rest assured, it's not 'America' in the sense of the country as a whole, which has lost its mind. Rather, it's a hellspawned maggot-ridden gaggle of vile blood-sucking narcissistic sociopathic vermin parasites sprinkled throughout the world (yes, even in China and Russia), and their slavishly ambitious minions in parliamentary bodies across the globe (such as the US Con-gress) who have lost their minds in their demonic quest for ultimate power. These moves and counter-moves on the global chess-board are merely actions taken towards fulfilling that ghastly agenda.

As I've posted in prior related-stories, I'm pretty sure Magic Barry, Angie, Pooty-Poot, Xi, and the rest of the gang are all working for the same boss(es). Oh sure, they probably don't like each other much, but they're marching to the same endgame.

Yup.

I never understood until recently why Wall Street bankers both paid for and celibrated the Bolshevik revolution. You would think that they would have supported the Tsar against the evil scourge known as communism that deprives (almost) everyone of both their property and rights.

If Nicholas the Second had just allowed them to install a privately owned Central Bank like America did his descendants would probably be alive today...

you are correct. And this is exactly the reason, why no one is allowed to know, who and where Putin's children are. If you need proofs that Putin stands against NWO, this is one of them. No NWO puppet needs to hide their families! Very few people also know that there have already been 8 assassination attempts on Putin (that I know of). I remember an interview with Putin about it (the assassination atempts) and he concluded: "Let them be afraid of us!"

Unfortunately, he did not say who "THEM" are. But I think most of us here on Zerohedge can guess.

If you listen to Putin's speeches, it's easy to hear that he's just about the only leader of a developed country left in the world who uses pure logic.  He just makes sense 'all the time'.  Our leaders have their heads so far up their asses, spewing shit and lies that they are sickening.  The most important fact to keep in mind is that western leaders are ALL taking their marching orders from the global banking cartel... the true war mongers.  Putin does not have that anvil strapped around his neck.  Therefore... he can use his own good brain, and the result is that 'pure logic and common sense' is all he knows.

Do you mean the USA or Russia?  Seeing Russia today vs. when i was there in the 80's (pre-collapse) then looking at the USA today over the same time frame, it seems that a complete reversal of wealth has taken place.  The USA shows signs of decay in every corner and Russia looks more like the USA.  The USA is a beast with a mortal injury (debt and hubris combined) that doesn't yet know it is going to die, but is very angry that it was injured and attacks anything that moves into its field of vision.  Even our so called "friends" wouldn't mind seeing the USA fall flat.  We are the classic bully from high school, no friends except the one small kid that needs his protection (UK? Israel?) but can not truly help in a fight within the big boy club.

The people will survive and some thrive, but the USA... I have a few doubts.

To be fair, Russia's probably had missiles in Kaliningrad for a while. Definitely, since last year at least. That being said, I can't blame them..

Europe should grow some balls and stop listening to Washington. UK won't do it, but Germany has potential. Unfortunately, Germans have been conditioned so well after WW2, that they are afraid to oppose America, or alas they be deemed Nazi again.

Europe doesn't need America for defense, but it does need trade with Russia. Germany should lead united Europe in the emancipation from US influence, and usher a new age of cooperation with Russia.

American hegemony and dollar supremacy definitely deserve a notable recognition in history books. But they have run their course. It's time America let go and accept that its "exceptionality" was simply due to circumstance in the 20th century. Stop brainwashing your citizens into believing a lie, and start treating other countries with respect.
