Russia Threatens To Deploy Ballistic Missiles In Retaliation For US Nuclear Escalation

Tyler Durden's picture

On Tuesday we noted - with some alarm - that the US is set to deliver 20 new nuclear bombs to Germany, each of which has four times the destructive power of the one that was dropped on Hiroshima.

For his part, Hans Kristensen, Director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, said the move blurs the line between tactical and strategic nuclear weapons,” while one member of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats warned that the “new attack options against Russia” constitute “a conscious provocation of [Germany’s] Russian neighbors.”

Of course, as we’ve documented extensively of late, NATO has never really been shy when it comes to “conscious provocations” of the Russians and that goes double in the wake of Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and subsequent support for the separatist movement in eastern Ukraine.

Still, war games are one thing, but nuclear escalations are entirely another and if ever there were a time when nuclear sabre rattling could prove especially dangerous it’s now, as the US and Russia are one “accident” away from open war in Syria.

Russia’s foreign ministry immediately condemned the delivery of the bombs to Germany, as spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (who's known for amusingly accurate depictions of US foreign policy) warned that the move represents an “infringement of Articles 1 and 2 of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.”

Well sure enough, The Kremlin is now hitting back. Here’s Reuters:

Russia may deploy Iskander ballistic missiles to its enclave of Kaliningrad if the United States upgrades its nuclear weapons in Germany, the Interfax news agency cited a military source as saying on Wednesday.

"A final decision well be taken after detailed analysis of the potential threat," the agency cited the source as saying.

What's an Iskander, you ask? Well, here's a helpful description from The Moscow Times:

The Iskander missile system is one of the most deadly weapons in the Russian arsenal. First fielded in the 1990s, the Iskander is a high-precision tactical ballistic missile system optimized for use at close ranges — under 500 kilometers.

Iskander missiles are capable of being loaded with nuclear warheads.

And here's an Iskander in action courtesy of RT:

We suppose this means the Pentagon may need to speed up its efforts to modernize US plans for a battle in the Baltics.

We'll close with the following from Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov discussing the possible US shipment to Germany:

“This is yet another step and, unfortunately a very serious step toward antagonizing the tenseness on the European continent. Unfortunately, if these plans come to light, with taking into consideration [Germany’s] Bundestag’s decision and so forth, one could say that they are steadfastly heading to establishing this. Of course, this may lead to a strategic imbalance in Europe and, therefore, naturally this will make Russia take according steps and countermeasures to establish parity because, naturally, this is not a step toward boosting stability, increasing trust, or providing security in Europe."

NEVER "gonna" happen.  They would need to do it on the weekend and that is football time and nothing else for them... i don't have a clue why, but it is.  It is truly a religion to them.  They are too busy working to keep up with their neighbors...who has the bigger lawn tractor and such.  America can't possibly begin to thing life is more than the number of dollars available on their credit cards, that is just unthinkable (yet they all cry that evil banksters robbed them of x when they hit hard times).

If it didn't happen during the great socialism of America, it won't happen.  If it does happen, We more than likely will wish it didn't, because those moments are when true totalitarian governments gain power.

When it comes to Russia, listen to this video and you can skip to near the end where Professor Siefe addresses how the Reagan era used flawed math and wrongly accused Russia on nuclear testing.  US geologists and all said don't do it, but Reagan did it.  This somehow will come back again for discussion, I bet.

The rest of Charlie's video is good too, Context is Everything'..how you get duped with numbers and math, does a good job with it and ironically the talk was given at Google's NY headquarters, telling employees there how they get duped...love irony..This is also the leading video to over at my Killer Algorithms video page.

The currently deployed US Army, and also Poland itself already operate the HIMARS rocket artillery system within Poland, and it can fire rapid-reload salvos of the precision-guided ATACMS ballistic missile.

HIMARS

MGM-140 ATACMS

The distance by road from Gdansk Poland to Kaliningrad is only 167 km, and that's not even a straight line. The straight-line distance is more like ~120 km.

The range of the rapid-firing HIMARS ATACMS missile is at least 300 km so it can already easily nail any target in Kaliningrad, including the Iskander launchers geolocated by mini UAVs, airborne standoff recon, and satellites.

The dopey Russians; firstly do not know they are total dopes, and pwned; and secondly, they never seem to know when they should keep their bloody trap shut. They can't help themselves but gloat like morons and look like idiots, in their vein attempt to be more than they really are. Now that they've openly made such a stupid threat against a NATO state, and prance about like utter morons, it just means a C-17A full of ATAMCS will be arriving shortly, and deployed all over NE Poland - for about the next 30 years or so.

To reinforce those that are already there.

Real clever bastards these Russians are.

But you misunderstand little Muppet! It's not about saying the other side is so good, it's just to show you how deluded and fucked Russia's side is, via it wasting so much energy just lying to itself about all these things. Russia is actually still a weak and unimpressive conventional force, it is also small, it is also poor. But its people have been so mind-fucked to the opposite fantasy, via chest-beating ultra-nationalism, and an endless sewer pipe of idiotic propaganda, that they don't even realize they're being encouraged to pick fights with powers that can wipe-out Russian air power and naval power, rapidly and very easily.

The West is a monster, a terrible enemy to have, it is ruthless and totally calculating, and decades ahead in development. Open your eyes, you don't want to keep tweaking something that big and that nasty, because the west has begun to take it to into its head that Russia will have to be dealt with. Where as three years ago no one gave a shit about stacking up forces against Russia. Everyone liked Russia!

Russia does not rule out future NATO membership

"Great powers don't join coalitions, they create coalitions. Russia considers itself a great power." (Photo: European Commission)

By Valentina Pop

BRUSSELS, 1. Apr 2009, 07:28

Russia does not rule out NATO membership at some point in the future, but for the moment it prefers to keep co-operation on a practical, limited level, Moscow's envoy to NATO Dmitry Rogozin told EUobserver.

"There is no such necessity at this moment, but we cannot rule out this opportunity in the future," Mr Rogozin said in a phone interview on Tuesday (31 March), one day after Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Russia should join the military alliance, if it meets the membership criteria.

"We need Russia for the resolution of European and global problems. That is why I think it would be good for Russia to join NATO," Mr Sikorski had said at an acacdemic symposium in Poland, as quoted by Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza.

The same view was echoed on Wednesday at a civil society event in Brussels called the "Shadow NATO summit," aimed at feeding the debate around the future of the military alliance.

"The problem is not that NATO extended to Russia's borders, but that it stopped there," said Gareth Evans, President of the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based advocacy group. "NATO should welcome Russia in its inner ring, provided it complies with the human rights criteria," he added, while admitting that this was not a short-term option, especially after the Georgian war.

However, Mr Evans stressed that allies should at least start to "conceptualise" Russia's potential NATO membership.

On the other hand, a British academic with the Loughborough University, stressed that such an option "had to be looked at soberly," pointing at Russia's membership of two other international organisations - the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) - where Moscow was hampering deployment of election monitors in Russia itself and in its neighbouring countries.

Russia's NATO membership has never been seen as a serious option, while Moscow maintains that it sees the alliance as a threat. NATO came about in 1949 as a US-led military alliance guaranteeing the security of the then Western European allies from any potential attacks by the Soviet Union.

Once the USSR collapsed, eastern European countries requested NATO membership and underwent major military, police and rule of law reforms before joining the alliance. Russia has fiercely opposed NATO enlargement to its neighbourhood, which it still considers under its sphere of influence.

"We don't consider it necessary to make any concessions in terms of our sovereignty and we are capable of solving all the threats in an independent way. What we are ready for is to create some temporary coalitions, but at the moment we are not happy about many things happening in NATO," Mr Rogozin said, adding that this was a reason why membership was out of the question at this point.

"Great powers don't join coalitions, they create coalitions. Russia considers itself a great power," the Russian ambassador stressed.

He said Russia wanted to be NATO's "partner," provided the alliance took into account Moscow's "interest" - a catchphrase alluding to NATO enlargement to its neighbouring Ukraine and Georgia, which it fiercely opposes.

Mr Rogozin strongly criticised NATO's solidarity with Georgia during and after Russia's invasion of its territory following Tbilisi's attack on South Ossetia.

"We are extremely frustrated and astonished by NATO's actions in August-September last year, when our soldiers were killed and instead of support, we only saw the hypocrisy of their policy. NATO turned out to be the only organisation that sided fully with the aggressor," he said.

"For the moment, we don't see any real change in the organisation, we only see the organisation getting ready for the wars of past Europe," Mr Rogozin concluded.
NATO's new concept to involve Russia

NATO leaders on Saturday are set to give a green light to the drafting of a new security concept, as the alliance celebrates 60 years of existence. Its current strategic concept dates back to 1999 and does not include new threats such as terrorism, cyberattacks or energy security.

NATO's relationship with Russia, now resumed after the Georgian war, is set to be developed in concrete areas of co-operation, a senior US official told journalists in Brussels on Monday, ahead of the NATO summit.

The new administration in Washington has pledged to "hit the reset button" with Russia, as it needs to cooperate with Moscow in order to achieve progress in difficult dossiers such as Afghanistan and Iran.

Mr Rogozin said the NATO-Russia council (NRC) was so far "a body where scholastic discussions were held."

The same view was shared on Monday by the US official. "The problem with the NRC so far was that it didn't focus on content. There was a lot of structure, but no content. We want now to structure cooperation more practically, in areas where you can achieve results, instead of insisting on things that won't happen," the US official said.

The Russian envoy said that in order for the NRC to work properly, NATO had to "take part in the discussion not from a bloc approach, but in our national capacities, not in the form of 26+1 but in the form of 27 members of the NATO-Russia council."

See! The West loves Russians!

But it's all bullshit.

I think people like you were surprised that the Lebanese resistance could blow up Israeli tanks because Israel has, like, the best shit.

Cheaper, more reliable, and simpler Russian anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic tech mean that the United States can not do whatever it wants in Ukraine or Syria or elsewhere.

Rather than debate someone who doesn't know very much about the topic such as yourself, I merely averred that in the case of massive eschange of conventional fire - any superiority essentially just ups the nuclear ante, so getting into it is lose-lose, debates by know-nothing nationalist schoolgirls aside.

Of course, it's odd that I have some duty to lecture anyone you think isn't following the correct, neoconservative/Zionist narrative.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=narcissistic+asshole

Someone who is so incredibly self absorbed that they are blinded by their general assholeness towards others. No one likes him but everyone is friends with him. All the ladies love him even though he is incapable of expressing emotion because well... he's an asshole. Only of the male gender. Girl 1: Wow isn't Ben so beautiful

Girl 2: Ya until you realize he's a narcissistic asshole

Well, ya see, the thing is, I normally don't have to carry the load in that direction as the pootie trolls and numerous pootie sycophants are all over attacking the west, already. So I tend to just peruse passively and correct their excesses and inaccuracies. Never been a one for collective action or narratives though, so I generally let them rabbit-on. If they just start talking lies and shit though, I call them on it, no need for that, reality is enough.

You see, I don't so much as care for the critique of sides, as to eliminate the dementors and liars, who seek to damage the minds of people to polarize them, with lies and propaganda. I'm really just not going to stand for that crap. From Putin, or Putin's trolls, or from Obama, or from western lie agencies, or its media.

That's what I concern myself with. So don't expect it to be what you concern yourself with - it won't be.

Whereas, going back the other way, to combat the RT crap and other Russian 'sources', I do have to take a much more active and aggressive stance, to push past the bullshitters, deniers and pootie trolls. Who are the dementors of people's minds - btw.

You can see the asymmetry involved, I'm sure.

So not like you're going to see a Krakatoa out of me, I go after people like you, avid polarized ones, and trolls, with the unwelcome facts of their positions and claims, more than anything else.

Get me now? I'll keep this little explanation handy, in case you need it explained to you again, at a later date.

haha ... right 'n wrong thinking, huh? ... I'm not interested in that, I'm interested in human beings maximizing what they can be, now and in every generation to come ... and it ain't going to necessarily be all that pretty ... be nice if it were, but we have one shot at maximizing our potential, and hand-wringing and wasting our capacity on conflict, and attacking each other is really not going to be it for us.

it is quite evident mass global polarization and degradation of human minds is our greatest vulnerability in this age of digital propaganda bullshit peddlers. Other people can do whatever they want, that's their business.

And dude, the 'dark day' came a very long time ago, the tide comes in, the tide goes out.

This is it. Adapt and cope, make the most of the possible, or don't, whatever, no one is going to give a stuff if you fail to adapt. And I guarantee you, no one is ever going to give a fuck a bout what you think, right now, even though you admire it so much.  I don't.  Adaptation for us is currently much more mental than physical. This is evolution, and it takes no prisoners, has not preference, life with favor the most adaptable and flexible and the least impaired, let alone the self-impaired. And that's if it all goes well.

So I'm more interested in more people moving past that bullshit addiction stage and its polarization.

Which you are well and truly still weighted down by, as that's what polarized thinking is, and produces. Clear up your own mess, or don't, it's not my problem, I really don't care how you take it, or reject it.

But I am going to hammer your preferred bullshit structures with facts and evidences, and you most likely are going to hate me for it.  I'm OK with that.  ;-)

And ... I'm going to seem really unbalanced to you, as I kick the shit into the dust, and that's just inevitable, and I don't care about your approval rating, or interest, or lack thereof.  :D

There's no crusade(s) here to win in life, especially a bloody political crusade for fuck's-sake. If you live to 70, and live it well, or don't, you still get a bonus grave to be proud of - well done, enjoy!

As for being derailed from developing into the humans we are, that's my enemy, in whatever form it comes, and I do not have another enemy, as there is no other enemy for human beings, but the fictions we invent, that do us harm and impair us.

The rest is just a bunch of illusions of fools, and the most fun in life is to kick the shit out of illusions and fools.  :D

Right? ... wrong? ... so cute ... the world does not actually operate in polarized opposite terms like those, that's a part of the mental ball and chain you yank around with you.  ;-)

Why the fuck would we want to put nuclear weapons in Germany?

And why the fuck would Germany LET us?

What is the need? How does this make anyone, especially the Germans, any safer? Russia isn't going to be "first-striking" Germany anytime soon. Or likely EVER.

All it does is escalate tensions. So once again, the Europeans allow themselves to be used by the US to poke the bear...

Umm, Germany, you DO know that Russia is right on your border, correct? By the time you verify the facts and get those codes right the Russians would be rolling tanks into Berlin with thousands of boots on the ground. America isn't going to nuke them in response, not when they know they'll get hit right back just as hard or harder...there will be months, if not years, of handwringing and shrill 'negotiations' with Putin while you Krauts practice your Cyrillic.

Find out meaning of words you use. You obviously don't have any clue.

Military occupation is effective provisional control of a certain ruling power over a territory which is not under the formal sovereignty of that entity, without the volition of the actual sovereign.[1][2][3][4] Military occupation is distinguished from annexation by its intended temporary nature (i.e. no claim for permanent sovereignty), by its military nature, and by citizenship rights of the controlling power not being conferred upon the subjugated population.[2][5][6][7]

You keep trying ever so hard to paint Russia as the aggressor in Ukraine - to do so you, like the NY Times, must pretend there was no us-backed coup of a legal, sitting president, and must pretend there was no neo-nazi/ultra nationalist presence at Maidan and in Odessa when those people were burned to death [or shot trying to escape]... on the other hand if anyone notes the strange role of Israeli dual citizens/Jewish oligarchs, or the fact that the PM, President, and head of Parliament are of Jewish or largely Jewish extraction in a country where Jews are less than 1/2 of 1% of the population...............

why then, you'd cry "anti-Semite" but you still have to explain why this is if this was a Ukrainian" revolt.

You also have to leave out how Kiev's putsch regime immediately began killing its own people for doing what the neo-nazis at Maidan did - occupying buildings and the like.

The point isn't that Putin is all sweetness and light - it's that as a troll, you are dishonest.

Were you honest, you'd understand that the people of Ukraine are the victims of the US/NATO IMF agenda to encircle and weaken Russia while stealing everything that is not nailed down.

  1. “Why are Donetsk and Luhansk ‘Novorossiya,’ but when a passenger jet crashes in its territory, it is instantly transformed into Ukraine?”
  2. “Mercenary activity is a crime in Russia. Why don’t ‘the militia men’–who come from Russia and are paid for combat–not fall under this provision of the law?”
  3. “How can one explain the fact” that Moscow has brought criminal charges [exclusively] against Russian citizens who are fighting for Ukraine but not against Russians who are fighting in Ukraine against the Ukrainian government?
  4. Do you consider the use by the [Russian] ‘militias’ of civilians as human shields something deserving of respect?
  5. “The war is costing Ukraine several million dollars a day. It is logical to assume that it isn’t costing its opponent any less. Do you really think that Russia isn’t giving the so-called Novorossiya military and financial help?”
  6. “Why is it that everywhere where the so-called militias ‘liberate,’ there is war? … Why are the so-called [Ukrainian] ‘punitive operations’ only where there are ‘militias’?”
  7. “Why must Ukraine hand over to [Russian] band formations territories that legally belong to it? If the Ukrainian military doesn’t want to do this, does that make them punitive detachments?”
  8. Given the number of times Vladimir Putin has changed his story on Crimea, “is it possible to believe him now when he asserts that there are no Russian forces in the Donbas? If so, then why?”
  9. How would you react if some American said–as Igor “Strelkov” Girkin has–that without their invasion, nothing much would have occurred?
  10. The Russian defense ministry has promised to provide five million rubles to the families of soldiers who “have died at the Ukrainian border. Are you not interested in why [the details of their deaths] are being hidden from you?”
  11. Given that Moscow forcefully disperses opposition meetings and imprisons its participants on made-up charges, how do you think Vladimir Putin would react if some group seized administration buildings and proclaimed the creation of its own statehood on Russian territory? Would Putin take measures or perhaps sit down with the terrorists “to negotiate” as he demands that Kyiv do?
  12. “Why does every Ukrainian patriot, who wears Ukrainian symbols, sings the Ukrainian hymn, supports the unity of his country and speaks against separatism automatically become a Banderite and fascist? Under what article of the [Russian Federation] criminal code?”
  13. Are all pieces of evidence of the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine–eventhose offered by Russian soldiers themselves–forgeries produced in the West?
  14. “Comrade Putin frequently has declared that Russia is not a side in the conflict and that he personally respects and supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine. If that is really so, then why hasn’t Russia closed the border from its side so that volunteers (and not only they) from the Russian Federation do not have the opportunity to cross it in order to fight against the territorial integrity of Ukraine?”
  15. The Russian government last August explained the appearance of Russian troops in Ukraine by saying that they had crossed the border by mistake. “Do you really believe this? What would be your reaction if NATO soldiers ‘accidentally became confused’ somewhere near Vladivostok?”
  16. “Why has Russia not once condemned the ‘Novorossiya’ militants and not once called on them to lay down their arms first? At the same time, officials of the Russian Federation have frequently called on Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms and leave the Ukrainian Donbas to the bandits. Why all [Russian] federal media gives positive coverage to only one side?”
  17. How do you explain the fact that the forces of the ‘DNR’ and ‘LNR,’ hard-pressed as they were last August, suddenly “opened a new front in the direction of Mariupol and seized Novoazovsk? Who did this in fact: the forces of ‘the militias,’ whom the Ukrainian army had successfully contained or Russian soldiers without uniform markings who supposedly weren’t there?”
  18. Why does Belarus, a state aligned so “close to Russia, support the territorial integrity of Ukraine and not agree with Putin’s imperialist plans? Why does Lukashenka, Putin’s ally in the Customs Union believe that there is no fascism as a mass phenomenon in Ukraine and say that it is necessary to destroy the militants fighting against Ukraine?”
  19. Do you believe Russian officials when they say that the 12 Pskov paratroopersdid not die fighting in Ukraine but rather “by chance” died from heart attacks, suicides and accidents all at the same time?
  20. “What are the ‘Novorossiya’ militants fighting for and what is the use of what they are doing?”

Mother Russia needs to make your head explode.

If the neocon cunts in AmeriKa who can't stop making war and fucking with people and sucking Netanyahu's dick don't like something, then we should all be 100% behind it, because there is ample evidence that these people are evil garbage worthy of decapitation.

If you support a neocon position at this point, you are on the payroll or are one of them.

My point is a simple one. International relations are rarely impacted by the philosophies and organisational structure of regimes.

It's more about treaties, resources and trade.

No-one cares if you are Muslim, Christian, Democrat, Communist, Monarch, Nazi or otherwise.

The game of kings is about serving your interests. If it's in your interest to have international relations with Nazis then you have international relations with Nazis.

Germany is too important a country to lock out, no matter what they do.

Sorry I had to explain this, I thought this was common knowledge.

Let's review the facts.

About 5 or 6 weeks ago the Russians complained that the US/NATO was testing a nuclear weapon. An examination of the facts revealed that the test was of a new gravity bomb capable of containing a nuclear weapon.

Obviously the bomb must have fallen downwards when dropped from a bomber.

Today, 5 or 6 weeks after that test, the US/NATO has traded out those old nuclear gravity bombs which were already deployed in Europe for the latest model.

This is just a case of the US/NATO putting

Why the Rise of Fascism is Again the Issue

"Since 1945, more than a third of the membership of the United Nations – 69 countries – have suffered some or all of the following at the hands of America’s modern fascism. They have been invaded, their governments overthrown, their popular movements suppressed, their elections subverted, their people bombed and their economies stripped of all protection, their societies subjected to a crippling siege known as “sanctions”. The British historian Mark Curtis estimates the death toll in the millions. In every case, a big lie was deployed.

“Tonight, for the first time since 9/11, our combat mission in Afghanistan is over.” These were opening words of Obama’s 2015 State of the Union address. In fact, some 10,000 troops and 20,000 military contractors (mercenaries) remain in Afghanistan on indefinite assignment. “The longest war in American history is coming to a responsible conclusion,” said Obama. In fact, more civilians were killed in Afghanistan in 2014 than in any year since the UN took records. The majority have been killed — civilians and soldiers — during Obama’s time as president.

The tragedy of Afghanistan rivals the epic crime in Indochina. In his lauded and much quoted book, The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geostrategic Imperatives, Zbigniew Brzezinski, the godfather of US policies from Afghanistan to the present day, writes that if America is to control Eurasia and dominate the world, it cannot sustain a popular democracy, because “the pursuit of power is not a goal that commands popular passion . . . Democracy is inimical to imperial mobilisation.” He is right. As WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden have revealed, a surveillance and police state is usurping democracy. In 1976, Brzezinski, then President Carter’s National Security Advisor, demonstrated his point by dealing a death blow to Afghanistan’s first and only democracy. Who knows this vital history?"

of course, Crimea's parliament voted to leave Ukraine {formally - to put it to a popular vote} AFTER it became clear that the US/NATO puppet government was quite hostile to the Russian minority and that the idea was clearly to bring NATO up to Russia's borders where, of course, they would bring in more nukes and missiles for "defense" while any rejoinder by Russia on its own soil would be "aggression"

If there’s no democracy, it’s not a country. It’s a banana state. On February 22nd, 2014, Euromaidan kicked out not only a democratically-elected president, but a democratically-elected government. It waited three months before holding elections for a new president, 8 months before parliamentary. By that time, all too late, the extremist element had already taken a stake way beyond electoral control – neo-Nazi party Svoboda, despite scoring less than 5% in the parliamentary elections, still vocally sit in Ukraine’s parliament, regularly send fighters to the front. Leader of neo-Nazi terrorist group Pravy Sektor Dmitry Yarosh, left, who polled less than 1% in the presidential election, on Interpol’s wanted list, is now an official aide to to the Ukrainian military.

Sorry, moron, but the major opposition party in Russia is the Communist Party. The US Neo-Liberal stooges that the west regards as the opposition managed to get 2% of the vote of one single seat in the recent election. The Russian have seen the western values these stooges support and have expressed their contemprt for them.

Interestingly, Navalny called for a mass demonstration after the election. The turnout was massive - about 5,000 individuals, at least 10 of which were accounted for by the presence of John 'The Blimp' Tefft and his bodyguard.

http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/31565-the-new-york-times-orwellian-vi...

par for the course for the Times, of course

Get your Israel/Palestine coverage from the Times?

You shouldn't.

http://ifamericansknew.org/media/meet-nyt.html

"Yousef Munayyer, Executive Director of The Jerusalem Fund, explains how it typically works: Israel can “fire into Gaza without accountability, provoke a reaction and then claim self-defense.” See here for his explanation of the methodology.

I have written about previous cases in which Israel breaks the cease-fire with bombings, shootings, or territorial incursions, and then uses the retaliation from Gaza as a justification to launch a deeper bombing campaign here and here.

Israel violates the cease-fires more often, bombs Gaza more times than Gaza rockets Israel, and kills more Palestinians than Palestinians kill Israelis. But these findings are not what is striking. What is striking about this is that almost everybody believes the opposite of the reality"

http://antiwar.com/blog/2014/02/06/the-truth-about-cease-fire-violations...

"So how have these cease-fire dynamics been covered? We’ve tracked New York Times coverage of the cease-fire during this period. The New York Times is representative of the mainstream and extremely important for shaping public discourse on events and thus an important window into broader mainstream coverage. The Times also has multiple reporters covering these events including a bureau in Jerusalem and a correspondent in Gaza. Finally, we simply can’t track everything so the Times, with its easily searchable history, is an effective example to use.

Of the nearly 120 Israeli cease-fire violations during this period the New York Times reported on 17 of them. Additionally, most of these stories (eleven) came either during the first week of the cease-fire, when the issue was still fresh in readers’ minds, or since the escalation on December 20th. That means for the bulk of this period, during which Israel committed 87 cease-fire violations and causing some 91 Palestinian casualties over nearly a one year period there were only six stories on the topic. This represents a systematic failure to cover Israeli cease-fire violations.

Making matters worse is the way events are covered in the rare instances they are covered. In most cases, Israeli actions are described as a response to Palestinian actions. So while most Israeli cease-fire violations are not covered at all, those that are are explained as justified retaliation. Thus the reader is completely misled about the dynamics of fire, why the cease-fire is threatened and exactly what is going on in and around Gaza.

The biggest challenge to the cease-fire agreement is persistent Israeli violation and the lack of any accountability for them. The politics of the Gaza Strip are complex. Israel says it wants Hamas to control projectile fire from other factions and yet it persistently violates the truce putting Hamas in a position of having to defend Israel’s violations. By targeting groups other than Hamas and by expecting Hamas to crack down on their responses, Israel is playing a dangerous and deadly game of divide and conquer in Gaza that will likely lead to the unraveling of the cease-fire. Once again, Israel has proven security is not its aim, subjugation is."
