VW CEO Winterkorn Steps Down Despite Being "Unaware Of Any Wrongdoing"

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite saying that press reports of the CEO leaving were "utterly ridiculous", he just did...

  • *VW CEO WINTERKORN STEPPING DOWN OVER WIDENING DIESEL SCANDAL
  • *VW'S WINTERKORN SAYS UNAWARE OF ANY WRONGDOING ON MY PART
  • *VOLKSWAGEN BOARD SEES FURTHER PERSONNEL CHANGES IN NEXT DAYS
  • *VOLKSWAGEN BOARD SAYS ALL INVOLVED IN CHEAT TO FACE CONSEQUENCE

One can only wonder what his "retirement" package will be.

Full Statement by Prof. Dr. Winterkorn

"I am shocked by the events of the past few days. Above all, I am stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group. As CEO I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines and have therefore requested the Supervisory Board to agree on terminating my function as CEO of the Volkswagen Group. I am doing this in the interests of the company even though I am not aware of any wrongdoing on my part.

Volkswagen needs a fresh start - also in terms of personnel. I am clearing the way for this fresh start with my resignation.

I have always been driven by my desire to serve this company, especially our customers and employees. Volkswagen has been, is and will always be my life.

The process of clarification and transparency must continue. This is the only way to win back trust. I am convinced that the Volkswagen Group and its team will overcome this grave crisis."

As a reminder, here is why Volkswagen, Germany's biggest company and the largest automaker, is important:

  • German automobile manufacturers produced almost 13 million vehicles in 2013 – equivalent to more than 17 percent of total global production.  Twenty-one of the world’s 100 top automotive suppliers are German companies.
  • The automotive industry is the largest industry sector in Germany. In 2014, the auto sector listed a turnover of EUR 384 billion, around 20 percent of total German industry revenue. Source: VDA 2015
  • The auto industry is the largest industrial sector in Germany, contributing about 2.7% to gross domestic product.
  • Some 20% of Germany's exports are made up of vehicles and parts.
  • Germany is Europe’s number one automotive market; accounting for over 30 percent of all passenger cars manufactured (5.6 million) and almost 20 percent of all new car registrations (3.04 million). Source: ACEA 2015
  • Germany is home to 43 automobile assembly and engine production plants with a capacity of over one third of total automobile production in Europe. Source: ACEA 2015
  • One in every five cars worldwide carries a German brand. Source: VDA 2015
  • In 2014, automotive industry R&D expenditure reached EUR 17.6 billion, equivalent to one third of Germany’s total R&D expenditure. Source: VDA 2015
  • 21 of the world’s top 100 automotive suppliers are German companies. Source: PWC 2013
  • Around 77 percent of cars produced in Germany in 2014 were ultimately destined for international markets – a new record. Source: VDA 2015
  • R&D personnel within the German automobile industry reached a level of just over 93,000 in 2014. Around 775,000 are employed in the industry as a whole. Source: VDA 2015
  • The Volkswagen group accounts for roughly one in 10 vehicles sold globally.
  • Most German auto sales came from the Volkswagen group, which reported just over 202 billion euros in revenue in 2014.
  • Roughly 70% of Volkswagen vehicles are sold outside German borders.
  • Volkswagen employs nearly 600,000 people around the world, and more than a third of the 775,000 people who work in the auto industry in Germany.

Meanwhile, back in the best democracy money can buy, where failure is rewarded with bailouts and where criminal death cover-ups cost less than $1 billion to settle, Mary Barra is still running GM.

LOL!  I know, all these greenies were on NPR last night wringing their hands about the emissions.

If I had one and it was getting 45 MPG or more and reliable I wouldn't care either!

It's not as if the diesel pick ups and semi's aren't ten times worse.

And the gasoline cars and trucks just as bad with less MPG.

DUH!

Well if all these rules for the children werent co-opted by corporate interests to create monopolies we could do something sane for a change. ICE engines suck from an enviromental perspective. Trying to start stop combustion 18000 times a minute (3000 rpm 6 cyl.) and be clean at the same time is fucking stupid. I can kick the shit out of any ICE diesel/gas setup with hundred year old tech. Ever heard of a Stanley steamer?

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/148416-are-steam-cars-poised-for-an-epic-comeback

They arent coming back. Anything simple and robust will be fought by the auto industry. Even though it can reduce pollution by huge amounts. Steam is also 3x more efficient than ICE. 70 mpg in your old longbed pickup on gas. Easy peasy convert to steam power.

https://youtu.be/LJq2Hc_mXFI

Why they wont come back.

1. They last forever.

2. They are simple. (small companies could compete)

3. They eliminate the complexity pushing profits down. Turbine = 1 moving part in engine. Not hundreds.

4. They work with anything that burns. Wood propane nat gas bankers whatever.

5. They burn so much cleaner. (Less costly and simpler emission controls)

You think GM  wants to make cars that last a long time and cost half as much? Hell no they dont and thanks to all these rules they dont have too.

Look up from your chained feet. Regulations dont solve pollution problems. They guarantee them.

Yes, I have and will never forget standing at an intersection in Tiawan in the early '90's when the red light changed to green.  Each road was about 5 or 6 lanes wide, and when the vehicles started to move, this huge cloud of dirty gray exhaust rose above the traffic and just lingered there until the light changed again.

That was just one of the very early signals I got that told me I did not want to live in that part of the world.

If we fire CEOs everytime a mistake is made, they will always be running scared and never take any risks at all.  At this point its hard to get the best people to take these jobs because of the inevitable firing for some stupid thing one over zealous underling did.  When mistakes are made you want the people who are there to fix them.  They  are responsible and shloud be held accountable instead of pulling the golden rip-cord.  Besides that's how these guys will get good at their jobs: fixing problems.  You bring in a new knucklehead, and it takes 2 years for him/her to figure out the basics. Is this just a way of rendering private enterprise totally ineffective so government can take it over?

Dr. Porsche was actually a sneaky bastard. Hitler tapped him to make a super tank and Porsches (electric) design caught fire at the working review. Several times....This resulted in Hitler using another company/design.  Later when crazy Hitler wanted to build a tank so big and (economically) stupid he had trouble getting somebody to do it. Sooooo back to Dr. Porsche he went. Dr. Porsche did it too. It was huge and it hauled ass pretty good. Drove like a dream they say.... Unfortunately it was so big it couldnt cross any bridges and the war was all but over anyway.

For those who dont know Dr. Porsche was an electical genius. He built his first car (electric) around the age of 22 in like 1898. It was entered in a major competion and cleaned house on the first try. The next closest car was 18 minutes behind. Years later his electic/diesel tanks catch fire. Sure they did!

This is New World Order law; government against the people.

That a company can be permanently crippled or an entire people’s well-being destroyed on the basis of an emissions “scandal” is reprehensible.

It reminds me of John D. MacDonald’s concern over narcotics laws in his 1967 Travis McGee mystery, Dress Her in Indigo.  “It is too tough. It slams too many doors. It effectively destroys the kid’s life. It is too harsh a penalty for a little faddist experimentation.”
He wrote:

“The tragic flaw in the narcotics laws [is] that possession of marijuana is a felony. Regardless of whether it is as harmless as some believe, or as evil and vicious as other believe, savage and uncompromising law is bad law… imposing a penalty barbaric and cruel…

“Let’s say a kid in Florida, a college kid eighteen years old, is picked up with a couple of joints on him. He is convicted of possession, which is an automatic felony, and given a suspended sentence. What has he lost? The judge who imposes sentence knows the kid has lost the right to vote, the right to own a gun, the right to run for public office. He can never become a doctor, a dentist, C.P.A., engineer, lawyer, architect, realtor, osteopath, physical therapist, private detective pharmacist, school teacher, barber, funeral director, masseur, or stock broker. He can never get any job where he as to be bonded or licensed. He can’t work for the city, county, or federal governments. He can’t get into West Point, Annapolis, or the Air Force Academy. He can enlist in the military, but will be denied his choice of service, and probably be assigned to a labor battalion.”

It is better to risk a small present evil than to pursue a present good that will be followed by a great evil to come (Bastiat paraphrased).

VW don't make Engine Management Systems. They buy them in from Bosch. Why is no-one asking Bosch some serious questions? Why is the Bosch CEO not on that stage shoulder to shoulder with the VW CEO? Could it be that Bosch have done that for all their customers? Could it be that they are up against the same physics as everyone else on the planet and therefore if we look close enough we will find that all ECU manufacturers do this?
