Caught On Tape: Anarchy - When Chicken Prices Hit Record Highs

Tyler Durden's picture

We have all watched the dramatic and disturbing scenes from Venezuela as 'average joes' fight over the last bar of soap or sheet of toilet paper as prices soar beyond anyone's control... and said "that could never happen here." Well with stealth-flation leaking into everyday prices wherever you look (as long as 'you' are not The Fed), we may have just witnessed the awakening. With prices for chicken having hit record highs, residents of America are brawling over the last winged feast...

When this occurs...

This eventually happens...

"could never happen here"

Amusingly you can see similar scenes involving middle class housewives in Marks and Spencers over the last turkey at christmas. I'll see if I can catch one on video.

poultry is up like 2% YoY and it's all of a sudden causing panic?? whatever you say ZH. The run up over the last decade is also partially from ethanol mandates. Expect chicken prices to drop drastically in the near future. Look at pork, absolutley cratered the last year.

No it will not occur in the US, it has food production and abundance out the wazoo, and a ration system already in place, as do pretty much all Western countries.

In a currency crisis situation it could be very bad in the US. The food logistics system is an insane creation with 3 days just-in-time food supply at distribution centers. Coupled with highly processed food and food mileage averaging over 1,000 miles equating to about 20 calories energy input to 1 calorie of food on the table, the US system is about as fragile as you could get.

Got garden, got chickens bitchez?

If you think currency collapse is going to do that to food supplies you may have been reading too many gold bug articles. And you're forgetting the ace up their sleeve, each American has about 2 months of fat reserve to get them to the other side of the chicken apocalypse. Don't underestimate it. They can migrate to Mexico in that time and bog-out on chicken enchiladas.  ;-)

And you think that's going to stop the fat asses from rioting for food?? Dream on man . . . . . if they can't get their 10,000 calories of crap each day all hell is going to break loose.

It's going to be a pretty relaxed sort of chicken riot though, it'll take two weeks just to lose enough weight to walk down to the shops, and another month to become mobile enough to use basic maneuver tactics. By then everyone will be headed to Mexico or Brazil anyway.

Thought this piece I wrote fit this post ....

I took my 8 and 10 year old boys to the Young Americans Bank here in Denver to deposit money they earned for chores.  The bank is exclusively for kids 21 and younger, and according to their website is the only bank in the world that serves that purpose.  The idea is great and their objective is to “help kids be smart with their money”.  As entered the bank I noticed a couple of school buses parked in the front.  One of the things the Young Americans Bank offers is classes to teach kids the importance of money and banking.  I began to wonder about what exactly are they teaching these kids in our ZIRP and money printing economy that most of these kids have experienced for most if not all of their lives?

I am not sure this is how the conversation went, but thought it could have gone something like this …

Instructor:

Hey kids, hope you are all excited to learn about money and banking!

Kids:

Yeahhhhhh!!!

Instructor:

How many of you kids have money in a bank?

Kids:

Me, me, me, me,

Instructor:

That is great, because as some of you may know, by keeping your money in the bank you can earn interest.  Interest is extra money you get for allowing the bank to hold your money.

Johnny: (Raises Hand)

I have some money in the bank and when I saw my last bank statement the interest was only a couple of pennies and I have $100 in the bank.  It hardly seems worth it?

Instructor:

Well Johnny, that is because interest rates are really low right now, but that isn’t always the case.

Johnny:

Why are interest rates so low, don’t the banks want my money?

Instructor:

Well, the government or the Federal Reserve Bank sets the interest rates, sort of.  They are low right now, because that helps make the economy better.  You know, so that more people can have jobs.

Johnny:

My uncle Joe and aunt Sarah both lost their jobs a long time ago, so that didn’t seem to help them?

Instructor:

I am sorry Johnny, but the Fed looks at the US population as a whole, not just some people.  And actually the percentage of people not working is pretty low right now.

Johnny:

I suppose.  Just seems like a lot of people even I know aren’t working.  Some have even given up looking for a job.

Instructor:

Well actually those people aren’t counted in that percentage.

Johnny:

Huh?

Instructor:

The other reason the Federal Reserve sets interest rates is keep prices from going up or down to much.  They call this price stability.

Johnny:  (Raises Hand)

That is interesting … my parents were looking to buy a new house because I have a new baby brother and they said the prices were to high, so we can’t move.  Do they only keep prices from going up or down on some things?

Instructor:

Well, it gets a bit complicated, but they watch prices on a lot of things to determine how to set interest rates to keep prices stable.  Houses aren’t really included in what they watch.

Johnny:

What about food?  We were having friends over and when my mom was in the grocery store she said a bad word while looking at some steaks, saying these prices are crazy, then bought hotdogs.

Instructor:

Well, food isn’t something they watch either.

Johnny:

But don’t all people need a place to live and eat?  Seems like those are the two things they should be watching?

Instructor:

Can we please move on …  so as I was saying, you can earn interest on your money by keeping it in the bank.  So the more you have in the bank the more you earn in interest.  So after you have worked and earned money for a long time, you can retire!

Johnny: (Raises Hand)

My grandpa is retired and had to move in with us, because he doesn’t have enough money.

Instructor:

Well Johnny, I am sorry about that as well, but there may be a lot of reasons for that

Johnny:

He said he worked hard all his life and saved his money, but now that interest rates are so low and the price of housing and food are high, he just can’t make ends meet.  Something about getting punished for doing the right thing while others borrow and live high on the hog.

Instructor:

Hmmm.. maybe your grandpa should borrow?

Johnny:

He tried that but they wanted to charge him too much interest.  But I thought interest rates were low?

Instructor:

Let’s move on.  There are other places you can put your money to make more than just interest.  You can also invest in the stock market.  The stock market is comprised of hundreds of companies and when you buy their stock, you own a part of that company.  So, when the company makes money, you make money!

Johnny:  (Raises Hand)

That is right!  My mom’s cousin Vinnie started a company called FleeceBox and their stock price went really high and now he is rich!  He drives a Ferrari!

Class:

Oooohhhhh!

Johnny:

So, I guess his company makes a ton of money.

Instructor:

Well, I know FleeceBox stock and they actually don’t make any money yet.

Johnny:

So then why is their stock so high?

Instructor:

Because people think they will make lots of money.

Johnny:

Oh, I guess that makes sense?

Instructor:

We got a bit off track and this is all a bit complicated for 3rd graders.  But when you all go to college your economics professors can teach you all about money and how it works!  Who knows, some of you may even go to Harvard and learn from Noble Prize winning economists who know everything!

Johnny:

My parents said I probably won’t be able to go to college because it costs too much.  Does the government include college when looking at prices?

I presently live in Idaho and don't seem to miss the Diversity at all.  I wonder what is wrong with me? Anyhow it is good to know that Obama is flooding Idaho with Somalians and Syrians. This is the last place with out the Diversity so desperately needed in ALL of America. All hail Obama, he is fixing Idaho's Diveristy problem. Yeah.

As anyone who keeps chickens, albeit a handful, can tell you there was an out break of bird flu in the last year.  For a small flock you watch them, and separate the sick into their own coop Then  support/treat the sick with diet or medicine as needed.

But commercial poultry farms are too crowded for that.  Huge flocks siply were put down.

That's why chicken prices are high right now.

Scarcity, due to flock kill-off.

Population should recover in a few months or a year...unless there's another outbreak.  That have been several the last ten or so years...

I'm generally on board with most things I come across on this site and see full well as everybody else here how so many things are being artificially "pumped" and the ensuing inflation is killing all the little people, but I take issue in this particular case as I know for a fact that chicken prices are not what's killing us.  The chart they're using to illustrate price inflation for a ready-to-cook chicken is of the Georgia Dock, s specific market representing very small birds, typically with an average liveweight of 3.5 pounds or less.  The industry has shifted well away from these lighter birds and produces mostly much bigger ones.  Because the supply of lighter-weight birds has shrunk so much over the years, you see the sharp escalation in the price series, but those smaller-weight birds make up a much smaller share of the total now.  When you look at chicken prices encompassing a broader array of sizes, you don't see near the kind of inflation like you find in the Georgia Dock.

Yeah man. This is click bait and I love you ZH ladies,  I mean dudes... or errr who acquired ZH again a couple years ago?

Anyways, Sams Club chicken breast $2.00 per pound. Sams PREPARED rotisserie 3 lb chicken which is awsome if $5. Publix is good for buy one get one free and roaming around to the deli for a couple free tenders or other nibles. For that you can always go to Edison Mall in the Food Court and get other free samples. Then buy a $6 side of meat for a treat. Call me cheap but you would never see me paying $15 a lb for grass fed beef like some.

It is bad out there and people have a lot of legitimate complaints but ya this article sucked. And by the way that fight was here in Ft. Myers. I live here. Blacks get welfare and sell all the grass. They live cheap but some I know (because father in-law is a self-admitted slum lord) make more than I do between welfare and selling dope. Not all of them though, there are a lot of poor blacks here that try to make an honest living. But tonight the Mayor was considering calling the national guard because of crime.

And to think, I was arguing with my father in law to bringing his lil princess up North in the mountains where it is calm and very safe like he thought it was something out of the Deliverance or something when average net worth is twice this area. Father in law is dude who pays $15 a lb for grass-fed and his woman shops at Whole Foods.

I would be dead before I spent $75k on eats. I just wash my vegetables and eat a lot of ground turkey or chicken breast. To each there own I guess. Other than that I do like the man. My ranting here about my in-laws is about as lame as the article, don't you think?
