Half Of Americans Think "Government Is An Immediate Threat To Liberty"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mac Slavo via SHTFPlan.com,

Government poses a threat to liberty, that much is clear.

But what may be surprising is that almost half of Americans clearly identified government as a clear and “immediate” threat, and are obviously outraged about what is going on.

Oddly, the number of angry Americans has remained consistent in poll number ever since about 2006 during George W. Bush’s second term, maintaining around 46-49% throughout Barack Obama’s entire presidency.

And yet, things continue to get worse and worse with each political cycle, and each new president.

Gallup reported that:

Almost half of Americans, 49%, say the federal government poses “an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens,” similar to what was found in previous surveys conducted over the last five years.

The remarkable finding about these attitudes is how much they reflect apparent antipathy toward the party controlling the White House, rather than being a purely fundamental or fixed philosophical attitude about government.

[…] during the Republican administration of George W. Bush, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents were consistently more likely than Republicans and Republican-leaning independents to say the federal government posed an immediate threat.

[…] during the Democratic Obama administration, the partisan gap flipped, with Republicans significantly more likely to agree.

[…]

Still, the persistent finding in recent years that half of the population views the government as an immediate threat underscores the degree to which the role and power of government remains a key issue of our time… numerous other measures show that the people give their government some of the lowest approval and trust ratings in the measures’ history.

So why does the situation between the people and government continue to deteriorate?

The complaints about government’s abuse of powers reaches across the isle, and straddles both parties in the White House, yet people tend to direct their anger only at the current president – thus falling for the ruse of blaming the puppet, and not the system.

As Americans shift blame about the state of affairs back-and-forth with every election, most miss the point about why these things are happening – someone is writing reports and creating policies that allow these things to happen. All the Congress and President do is approve them, and deflect attention towards who is running the show.

What are Americans upset about, according to polls?:

Overall, Americans who agree that the government is an immediate threat tend to respond with very general complaints echoing the theme that the federal government is too big and too powerful, and that it has too many laws. They also cite nonspecific allegations that the government violates freedoms and civil liberties, and that there is too much government in people’s private lives.

[also…]

perceptions that the government is “socialist,” that the government spends too much, that it picks winners and losers such as the wealthy or racial and ethnic minorities, that it is too involved in things it shouldn’t be and that it violates the separation of powers.

[as well as…]

freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the overuse of police and law enforcement, government surveillance of private citizens including emails and phone records, government involvement in gay marriage issues, overregulation of business, overtaxing, the healthcare law and immigration.

The vast majority of these issues happen under the mis-leadership of both parties, progressing without fail through the years.

It is time that Americans embrace their anger at government, and focus their attention past the politicians to the real problem.

Start with the bankers, follow the money, and see where it goes...

TAXES. Duh... Keep raising taxes whilst the roads look like shit and the schools seem to be getting worse and that is the nexus of all government distrust.

The Big Problem TPTB have with Americans is simple: We have all been steeped in the ideas of self-determination, trust in government, we can all rise to the top if we just work hard enough, etc. Of course, that's malarkey but very helpful to keep all those noses to all those grindstones for all those years.

The Big Problem is no one told Americans it was all for laughs. The joke is on TPTB...WE BELIEVED IT. And because we believed it, we will get more and more pissed the more and more we see it was a joke played on us.

We aren't a nation of peasants who have 400 years behind us of working for an overlord for a scrap of bread. We WERE TRAINED to believe in the lies. And when Americans find out they were lied to at this level, things will not go well for those seen to be the liars.

It's why they want all the guns. They know if they don't get their hands on them it is only a matter of time before they get to play Czar and Czarina.

Let the play begin.

It is becoming more obvious to more people, but those with any influence are still far too comfortable to take any action, especially if it might upset their own place in the system.  We have a long way to go before this changes, unless something happens to cause a sudden collapse, or some huge bombshell discovery of corruption....like definitive proof of government's involvement in 9/11 or the banks colluding to blow up the economy.  There will have to be a major spark to get the fire going.

TuPhat - It is soft slavery. Over time with this model your compelled to take more loans as inflation outstrips wages for most earners.

Yes, an improvement over hard slavery but not good enough. Now, leadership has done some things right or no way could population grow from 2B to 7B in 100 years.

However, part of the job of representative is taking heat for commonly shared problems and imperfections. It isnt to declare yourself god, loot the people and tell them to shut up or they get dungeons or executed (NDAA). Todays elite are skating on very thin ice.

I'm still amazed there are people who think rolling the dice on the battered shield of what few liberties we still possess is peachy. What you will do by calling a constitutional convention is exactly what terrorists do when they set a series of secondary bombs to go off once the original wave brings the first responders: you will make it infinitely easier to concentrate blackmail, corruption, fear, greed and sundry blunt objects on those assembled to subvert the process and deliver us over to our enemies.

You want to make a huge difference in the federal government? Quit voting in the national elections and start working like hell to make sure your state legislature understands what the 10th Amendment is for...and isn't afraid to use it.

I'm not sure why people are so afraid to say they don't believe the government's story on 911. It is incontrovertible logic that the story is false. I can prove it in a few simple steps.

  1. The government impaneled a hand-picked commission to investigate 911.
  2. The government's hand picked commission has said they were not allowed to follow the investigation wherever it took them but were instead routinely stonewalled.
  3. When you are not allowed to investigate something, you know two things:
    1. You do not have the final truth about what you are investigating.
    2. Someone does not want you to have the final truth.

With these simple steps, it can be shown, no matter what the actual facts are, what the government said is a lie. Ergo, there is no conspiracy theory slur that can be maintained when one says there is an ongoing government cover-up and their narrative is a lie.

Case closed.

"I'm not sure why people are so afraid to say they don't believe the government's story on 911."

Cognitive dissonance.

By any sane criteria, 9/11 was a very major act of terrorism in the United States. Everything has changed since 9/11.

If john doe were to discover that this event was carried out by criminals at the highest levels inside government involving foreign powers, and was then covered up by their own government, it would bring the house down. The status quo would be untenable. Meaning that if the government can carry out such a massive act of terrorism against its own people, what other huge lies and cover-ups is it perpetrating?

This frightens people which is why they avoid wanting to know the truth. "Fear of the unknown" takes control.

You can apply the same mental process to very many other situations in life. People will accept lies because it's less painful than knowing the truth.

I don't believe for a minute that rebellious sentiments are brewing, only that a huge number of people haven't found a petty, superficial replacement for the current emperor's failed hope/change platitudes.  The major driver behind the discontent has more to do with the popularity of cop-abuse stories and videos or school system regulations that create stupid disciplinary outcomes.  Most people are still ardent believers in the cult of .gov, they just don't like the sentiments associated with some .gov behavior.

A small percentage of the population gets it and they are labeled as the enemy.

They'll have to outrun the DSS/CPS if they don't want to be 'the slow one that gets eaten by the bear' if  you  know what I mean.

It's called Excess Scoring of US consumers, new executive order called "Behavioral Science Insights" says the government knows what's best.  I had to laugh at some journalist over at Forbes expanding on this.  The White House said they figure out new wording and time for emails send to those who have education loans...well crap, companies have been doing this and changing things for years, but now..now she called it taking advantage of "Behavioral Science Insights"..what a crock, this is not science as she perceived.

In the real clinical world there is behavioral Science, but when geek crack numbers, that's what it is.  In the data world, we have habits, trending, and number crunches, not flipping Behavioral Insights Science.  Seriously, the Executive Order gave cart blanch for all the banks and companies to harvest and sell your data as long as the government gets some of it...what they used to create this executive order that creates excess scoring on US consumers for profit.  The media spreads this crap as well as I pointed out with the Forbes article.

I travelled for months hrough the US in the late sixties and marvelled at how slim and fit the women were and how efficiently everything worked, from car repairs to distribution of products.  All that collapsed after 9/11 to men with guns and cameras defending buildings against imaginary attacks. Fear is a wonderful weapon to wield to wave over the gullible. The women, since Big Pharma and Big Agro have taken over have turned into cows.

You know what the greatest threat to liberty is in America today?  Manspreading.  ~50% of the population is male, and men manspread...EVERYWHERE.  You just can't take up as much space as you like because you think you got to keep your gonads at some specific temperature to ensure that your gametes are viable.  Sure reproduction is a naturalistic imperative, but your manspreading is destroying trust is all public spaces.  The nation doesn't need your sweaty smelly thighs angled out like you are a water molecule.  Manspreading isn't a micro-agression.  No No No, it is a MACRO-Agression.  We need to demand safe spaces, where manspreading is both banned and instantly punishable.  Safe spaces where we can be free from the hetero-normative paternalistic scourge of manspreading.  Trigger warnings just won't cut it.  Once you have been exposed to manspreading, which is an absolute OUTRAGE, the offense is done.  There needs to be a law!  Maybe we could hire some of the poor unemployed in this great nation to scour America's public spaces for manspreading and just cut it off before it becomes the horrible public nuisance that it festers into when unchecked.  Maybe they could be armed with electricly charged wands to get those legs to snap shut, and then issue a fine based on what the angle of the manspread was.  Any manspread angle over 90 and the fine should at least double.

Yeah, male privilege is everywhere.  Men should always sit down on a toilet to pee, and for God's sake, tuck your cock and stuff your balls when you travel in public.

In my area, there apparently isnt enough .gov tyranny, b/c people insist on living in HOAs where some retiree gets his jollies out of cruising around with a 30-min hourglass, literally timing people whose garage door is open.  31 minutes?  $100 citation.  Doesnt matter if you are working on your car at the time, doesnt matter if it's Saturday.  You leave your damn garage door open more than 30 minutes, you get fined.  The take-away here is that the people WANT the tyranny.  Time for a purge where we (once again) separate the exceptional from everyone else.

When you are free to spend your money as you choose, your freedom is proportional to your wealth.

No money, no freedom.
