Pope Francis Addresses Congress - Live Feed

Tyler Durden's picture

Francis will be the first pope ever to address Congress, and as NY Times reports, a milestone in the journey of the Catholic Church in the United States. Mr. Boehner, a proud Catholic, has invited three popes over 20 years to come to Capitol Hill, with this being his first success. The papal address to the Republican-controlled Congress may make some squirm as Francis isn’t shy about tackling controversial topics or upending conventional orthodoxies about Catholics and politics — a prospect that makes U.S. conservatives especially nervous, given Francis’ insistence on raising concerns about issues such as economic justice, climate change and immigration.

As The NY Times reports, not that long ago, the prospect of the head of the Catholic Church making such a speech would have been unthinkable. Catholics in politics were a source of suspicion and a subject of slander for generations. Even as John F. Kennedy became the first Catholic elected president, he felt compelled to defend his faith by asserting that he would not take orders from the pope.

Today, the pendulum has swung drastically. The Congress that Francis will address on Thursday includes 138 House members who are Catholic and 26 senators, or nearly 31 percent, compared with 22 percent of the overall adult population. Not only are both House leaders Catholic, so is Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., who serves as president of the Senate.

As The Huffington Post notes, the papal address to the Republican-controlled Congress is likely to be one of the most closely watched talks during the pope’s weeklong visit to Washington, New York and Philadelphia this fall, especially since the presidential campaign season will be growing more intense.

Francis isn’t shy about tackling controversial topics or upending conventional orthodoxies about Catholics and politics — a prospect that makes U.S. conservatives especially nervous, given Francis’ insistence on raising concerns about issues such as economic justice, climate change and immigration.

“The pope will come humbly but will talk clearly,” Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, a top adviser to Francis, told an audience at Georgetown University.

And Francis isn’t likely to change his tune, Maradiaga said as he previewed some of the pope’s likely themes. Among the points that Maradiaga expects Francis to make in September:

Welcome immigrants:

Maradiaga reiterated that Francis would have liked to enter the U.S. by crossing the border with Mexico to make a point about welcoming immigrants, not building walls to keep them out. He said that while time did not allow for a border stopover, the pontiff was certain to raise the issue on Capitol Hill.

“Even here, the desert cannot be a tomb or a cemetery,” he said, referring to the migrants who often die trying to cross into Arizona or Texas.

Battle economic inequality:

“Capitalism is not a god. It is not a divinity. It is not a system that is perfect and does not need any modification,” he said during a luncheon meeting. “This system is fostering tremendous inequalities.”

A just economy means strong families:

Maradiaga indicated that promoting an economy that helps the struggling middle class and the poor in particular will also be key to the pope’s message of support for the family:

“The (free) market economy is not complete. We need a social market economy. This is the big contribution of the Catholic faith to the system — to try to have this social component that will bring more justice to the system,” he said. “It is not fair that a system that is producing so much richness could walk side by side with so much poverty.”

Protect the environment:

Francis is going to publish a major teaching document on the environment ahead of his U.S. visit, and observers expect the encyclical to accept the reality of climate change and mankind’s role in it, and to call for action to address the dangers:

“Do not expect statistics or numbers or theories” in the encyclical, Maradiaga said. “He will go directly to the responsibility of all the baptized, especially with creation. Because all of us have responsibility.

“I am clear. We cannot continue playing with creation and contaminating” the Earth, Maradiaga said. The pope seems to agree with him and will raise the issue in September — much to the consternation of many conservatives who have been trying to blunt the document’s impact even before it is published.

Fight partisanship:

“For many Catholics, first is the political party, then is the church,” Maradiaga said.

“I see this in some attitudes of citizens who are first Republicans or Democrats. Then comes Catholicism. This is a big problem. Because we have to put everything in order. God is first, then all other human institutions.”

Promote dialogue, not ideology:

“One of the conditions for a true dialogue is to have peace in your soul, peace in your personality, to be persons of peace. But when you are in the trenches, trying to defend ideologies, you’re not capable of a true dialogue,” Maradiaga said.

“Even the congresspeople can listen to other voices, to counsels, to advisers. It’s a human attitude that we have to develop. The one who receives advice commits less errors and is not mistaken. The one who does not like to listen to advice will have a lot of trouble. So I think the Congress will receive very well the advice (of the pope) — even if there are some things that will not be comfortable.”

That's right American Catholics, give up your country, your rights, and your prosperity (what is left of all that, anyway) because the pope tells you too. What a bunch of lemmings. This robed baby touched will be the downfall of you all if you don't wake up. Even if you are religious and catholic, you should tell this guy to stick to matters of faith. But, unfortunately telling others how to love their lives for the benefit of the elite is what religion has done since the beginning of time, so why would today's Catholics be any smarter.

Grown men and women listening to a man who pretends to know things he does not.  If one were to replace the pope with Charles Manson, one could see how incredibly offensive it is to have a "spiritual leader" address our leaders.

4 great religeous truths:
1.  Muslims do not recognize Jews as God's chosen people.
2.  Jews do not recognize Jesus as the messiah.
3.  Protestants do not recognize the pope as the leader of the christian world.
4.  Baptists do not recognize each other in Hooters and liquor stores.

Right there with you.  Grew up in the south, married into a strong Catholic family.  Before we got married we had to go see the priest to talk about different "relationship" issues, life planning, etc. to get his sign off so we could be married in the church.  I remember telling my fiance (now wife of 20+ years) this is kind of absurd, asking a guy for relationship advice when he is "celibate" and supposedly has had no relationship since he was a kid.  We had already discussed everything he wanted to talk to us about, kids, finances, debt, spirituality, and I only had to fake the more esoteric parts.  He ticked the box, inlaws were happy, wife was happy, we tied the knot.  Happy wife, mostly happy life.

I still think getting advice from someone who has not lived in the real world, had a relationship, etc. is ludicrous. Getting it from someone who is a Jesuit from South America is even worse.

<<I wonder if the Pope will quote this scripture:>>

Pope did make some quotations, but none of them were scripture. Guess the Bible isn't that relevant when a Christian leader can quote political leaders instead.

I don't even know the Bible, but I've read some of it over the years. And after that speech and the enthusiasm which received it, a scripture did come into my mind, so I went and looked it up:

<<11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. 16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.>>

Bolded bits are the phrases I thought of, that made me look it up. I believe it's supposed to describe the False Prophet; I was thinking that the first beast is the zionist bankster regime, and the second beast is whatever this Pope is announcing, that will heal all the wounds the first beast inflicted and make the system whole again. (Maybe Agenda 2030 spooked me too much, but the speech sounded to me like he was announcing something, being purposely vague, and the people listening sure seemed to like it, no questions asked.)

It's from Revelations 13. Pope took office on 13/03/2013. Just one of those silly coincidences, but it didn't make me feel a lot better.

The current Pope shares the views of much of the south and central american region from which he hails.

'Liberation Theology'.

Essentially it is communism with a cross.

Look what wonders this idea has done for the region over the last century.

Look at the trail of murders, disappeared, and other atrocities and crimes against humanity its advocates have committed.

This is the path the Catholic Church chose in order to broaden its appeal.

Of what moral value is a religion that intentionally gets in bed with murderers and thieves?

Of what philosophical value is a religion that intentionally adopts a philosophical base 180 degrees at odds with that of its founder?

From 'Do unto other as you'd have them do unto you', we get to 'make others do for you what you'd have them do, in the name of others'.

I was mighty unimpressed with his constant tying of Lincoln to "liberty". Whatever else the man stood for, it wasn't that. Either the Pope's American scholarship isn't up to snuff, or he is really into the idea of big central governments. Guess which option is the correct answer.

Heaps of Hope 'n' Change, peppered throughout the speech. Many times I heard echoes of Barky in the campaigns of both '08 and '12. In a word cloud "hope" and "forward" would dominate. I'll bet he's next years Nobel Peace Prize winner. (You heard it here first.)

It would have been nice to get a few specifics along with our marching orders, but being general and vague is probably strategic when you're advertising for popular support of a New World Empire. Prolly would have disturbed the regular rhythm of the applause if he'd got too detailed anyway.

Those Congress criminals were up and down like a terlet seat on a fair day. I wondered a couple of times if they understood the ramifications of what they were applauding. Maybe they're all just getting in practice for our new supranational masters.

The personal demeanour and humility of the man make him easy to like. But these grand ambitions are setting off very loud alarms thru all my spider senses, and that speech today turned their volume up to 11.

“Capitalism is not a god. It is not a divinity. It is not a system that is perfect and does not need any modification,” he said during a luncheon meeting. “This system is fostering tremendous inequalities.”

It's not capitalism.  So how about he address the real problem.

Will he comment on the sanctity of marriage, and how it is 1 man, 1 woman only?

"Families". Niiiiiice and vague. Specifics to follow... you'll hear about those from various local agencies of your friendly supranational government, once it decides what the term includes. Don't worry, it'll be written down for you at some point. But you should get on board and ride the wave right now, because everyone knows that families are a good thing, as you can tell from the thunderous applause.

In 2012 El Papa said that the Falklands are Argentine and that the British had usurped the islands (the official Agentine government spin).  He got that one wrong: https://www.academia.edu/10490336/Argentinas_Illegitimate_Sovereignty_Claims

But he's human.

Full disclosure: I am a Catholic.

I think that this Pope is a heretic because in his encyclical Evangelii Gaudium Francis stated that the covenant with the Jews was still valid.

Our Lord Jesus Christ told the Jews of his day: “If you do not believe that I am He [the Messiah], you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24) Elsewhere He said to the Jews, “You search the Scripture because in them you think you have life everlasting. And it is they that bear witness to Me, yet you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.” (John 5:39-40)

Saint John, faithful to Our Lord’s teaching, says likewise, “Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ. He is Antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.” (1 John 2: 22). Modern day Jews deny Jesus is the Christ, and live their lives as if Jesus does not exist.

If the pope had anything to say to that wicked body of fraudsters, he should have warned against the evils of aborting innocent babies, and selling their body parts.  The pope should have chastised the court for making so-called homosexual "marriage" a "right".

Instead he talked about sustainability, and equality and social justice. What bible is he reading?

At the time of Vatican II, the Catholic Church was captured by moderninsts and freemasons.  Homosexuals were promoted into high places, and the seminaries were filled with rotten teachers. (Read the book "Goodbye, Good Men".) As a result, homosexual pederasts were given control of many parishes and dioceses.  The great scandal of pederasty went on for the entirety of the reign of modernist John Paul II, and he did nothing to stop it. For this JP II was declared a saint?  In contrast the true Saint, Pope Pius V said that priests who were guilty of this crime should be handed over to secular authorities to be EXECUTED.  Pope St Pius V was authentically Catholic.  Today Francis did not condemn the killing of the innocent, but preached against the killing of those who were rightfully condemned for their own crimes.

Conclusion: Global Warming is a hoax. The pope is still a heretic. What you heard today is NOT the authentic Catholic faith.
