I propose an amendment to the Eighth Amendment:  "Cruel and unusual punishments shall not be inflicted, except for financial crimes and government corruption”.

you can do it if you call it "atypical" punishment.

Water boarding isn't torture, so that shouldn't be cruel and certainly hasn't been unusual, so perhaps we can start that on an hourly basis.

Apllied to bankers and pols, any punishment is unusual.

I'm surprised you didn't know that already.

Actually the Catholic Church, for all its many, many..many issues - does more charity work than any other entity on Earth.

Just sayin'.

And unlike "Jewish charities" -it doesn't go to one country mostly, or go to one ethnicity or even one religion...

Catholics ARE the Church.

I think you conflate "Church" with the clerical hierarchy.

[and for the proverbial record, I am secular and agnostic but from a mixed Catholic/Protestant/Buddhist family ~ I see an awful lot of bad in the Church hierarchy, but the Jesuit conspiracy theories are absurd, and there really are a shitload of Catholic charities and college kids who volunteer... baby and bathwater, etc.]

I'm Catholic.  I have issues.  It is the whole central command thing.  Once the preservation of the institution becomes more important thant the original purpose of the institution, it is toast.  I doubt Jesus would be catholic if he were alive today.  That said, with exception of his understanding of economics and misperception that what we have is capitalism, I think the new pope is a step in the right direction.  I just wish he weren't so "preachy" about politics/economics.

"And I say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. "

"And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound, even in heaven. And whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed, even in heaven.”

Jesus never said that the institutional chuch would never be tainted by evil. Even he himself was tempted by Satan. What he did say was that the gates of Hell would not prevail against the church.

We know from history, especially the causes of the Reformation that the church is capable of corruption. Again, as our friend above says, baby and bathwater. Christ also said that the church is the body of Christ. And truly the church is the faithful people of God. Simple rules for simple people; love God and love your neighbour. Surely even atheists and agnostics can have little problem with that?

The "Church" is the one established by Christ and those who follow His words and deeds, utilizing His discernment, in thought and action. Tough to find many calling themselves "Christian" and churches fitting that description.

"Neither are doing God's work"

I'm reminded of this quote - "Capital, Authority, Clergy: The three heads of the hydra that guards the gates of this prison called Earth" - to paraphrase Ricardo Flores Magnon.

Gosh, looks like the heads of the hyrda are attacking each other! Makes me want to cry real tears, it does. Historically, when this happens, the empire in question doesn't have long to live.

The Pope has not mentioned Jesus Christ, once. Not once. Political agendas, but not Jesus Christ. He seems to be heading for a one-world religion that does not include Christ.

You're wrong there. I heard him mention Jesu Cristo several times yesterday. Not in Congress or at the UN of course, but then, if he mentioned Jesus Christ there. the media and other perpetually-offended people would have torn shreds from him, demanding that he keep "faith" out of "politics".

It's so incredible what one financial sociopath named Abraham had started. He lied, he was wealthy, and many others became rich in repeating the lies. If your grandfather was a liar and a thief, and your father was a liar and a thief, would you continue the family's business?  Looks like most did.

don't be so sure to blame it on abe. mankind has a tendency to take the truth's offered up those with deep insights, and then warp them beyond recognition. the fact that it took only about 10 centuries to pervert the teachings of one guy to basically be peaceful into bloody crusades should be proof enough of mankind's propensity in this regard.
