Obama Promised Healthcare Premiums Would Fall $2,500 Per Family; They Have Climbed $4,865

How’s that Obamacare working out for you? That’s what I thought.
Considering that pretty much every single thing Obama promised when he was running for President turned out to be an outright lie, we shouldn’t be surprised this is also the case when it comes to his so-called “signature achievement.” Before getting into the meat of this post, let’s take a trip down memory lane and watch a video clip of Obama on the 2008 campaign trail.
As you can see, he didn’t just say it once or twice. He said it over, and over and over again. Now here’s what actually happened.
From Investors Business Daily:
Employer-based health insurance premiums climbed 4.2% this year for family plans, according to an annual Kaiser Family Foundation report. That’s up from 3% the year before.
Since 2008, average family premiums have climbed a total of $4,865.
The White House cheered the news, saying it was a sign of continued slow growth in premium costs.
“We will start,” Obama said back in 2008, “by reducing premiums by as much as $2,500 per family.”
And Obama wasn’t talking about government subsidized insurance or expanding Medicaid or anything like that. He specifically focused on employer provided health care.
For “people who already have insurance, and the employers who are providing it,” he said at one campaign event, “we will work to lower your premiums by up to $2,500 per family.”
“We screwed some folks.”

The price of healthcare (sic) in the US has been skewed by the very existence of Medicare, Medicaid, and HMOs. Abolish all three, allow for catastrophic insurance (yaknow that's what insurance is all about, not maintenance) only, and watch the price fall while the quality stays the same or improves.

No its no. America has a lot of people that don't take care of themselves. Per Capital the US provides far more medical services than the UK. Healthcare and life expendies are two different things. BTW, a lot of drugs and medical tools used in the UK were produced or designed in the US. With out the US private medical sector they would have been significantly a lot less med tech developed. The premium increases are just the first volley. When you have to use your "Insurance" you'll be blown away.
And the full effect of Obamacare hasn't even hit yet, and won't until 2017, thanks to those executive order stays of execution.
My understanding is that until 2017, health insurers have some backing by the government so it's a "can't lose" proposition.
But once the govt backing flees, the insurers will power premium hikes into hyperdrive.
Hmm, the government gets more involved in something and the expectation/promise is that the price will go down?

The purpose of ObamaCare was to get everyone paying premiums. And it did that. The actual cost of said healthcare was always in the hands of Big Pharma and that isn't going to change until the end of all time. Regarding which according to my calculations is sometime mid to late 2016.

Obamacare and the entire illegal racketeering operation that healthcare has become must either become universal health care (i.e. nationalize the pharma companies and health care systems) or we must eliminate the intermediaries (insurance companies) and go fee for service.
It is now to the point where international travel to address medical services has become a first-choice alternative. Off-shore your doctor. We did it to the entire manufacturing sector, now it's time for health care to become affordable and accessible again.
p.s. - I savor the idea of highly communicable, incurable diseases to infect all those who have ruined health care in America -- I'm looking at you, Washington D.C.
My brother-in-law took a serious look at doing this for dental implants. That didn't quite pencil out because no hospital stay is required. However, with a lot of high quality Asian air carriers offering very low fares now, even a no hospital stay was close in price.
He looked at Thailand, South Korea, Singapore and the Phillipnes. In all of these places, costs were at least 50% less than the US.
Drs operate as a monopoly. The AMA works to keep Drs unmanaged and unregulated. Ever notice that every Dr thinks differently than others; there is no specific process that they follow.
It would be very interesting to see the US if there was competition between Drs and no monopoly of Drs.
One thing that would be required would be a smarter US consumer of Drs services. For some services, you can take time to research which Dr is a good provider. But many times, you cannot choose; you are not smart enough or are incapacitated...
That requires some sort of regulation. The free market cannot solve everything....
But a monopoly almost never helps...
And dickhead god complex Drs are the cause of many more problems than they solve. It will good when the god complex luddite Drs die off and are replaced by younger Drs.

I did support some sort of national health care - but on a *voluntary* basis - basically a single payer variant where 30, 40, 50 million people might be able to sign up for affordable basic care.
In tandem with, say, letting people buy drugs from Canada, and letting insurers in State A sell in state B.
The Dems didn't want to do what made the most sense economically or pragmatically. They simply wanted to FORCE people to do things and take more of your $, and expand federal power.

My employer health went from $0 in 2008 to $1800 and they want to double it this coming year.
Went from a $10 co-pay to see the Doc to whatever the office visit is,,, usually around $100-150. They take it off your now $1300 deductible,,, increasing to a yet undetermined amount this year.
Like car insurance,,, home insurance,,, medicare,,, ACA,,, anytime the government steps in to "save us" prices double on a yearly basis,,, treble if they make it mandatory.

I pay 93 Euros a month to health care insurer, with a 370 Euro annual deductible. for unlimited care.
Example. Wife last year had a week in the hospital. in private room with internet, phone and TV by bed and meals to order.
plus medications. Cost? I don't know, we never saw the bill, only the bill from health care saying we had to pay the 370 Euro deductible.

We pay less than 800 USD per year for our insurance - for two 60+ year olds
There is no deductible but the lines can be very long to setup appointments with specialists.
Also - if you need a surgery you need to find someone to contribute blood on your behalf.
Price includes prescriptions - if they have them.
Even going to a private specialist is very afforadable. Just had my deviated septum and turbinates fixed up. Surgery, anesthesia everything came to less than 900 USD.

Just got my bill for the year two weeks ago. 18% increase. Same plan I've been on for 12 years (grandfathered). Everyone I know that's had to get an actual healthcare exchange planned has been slammed even harder. I pulled out the bills from the past 10 years, and it's 500% higher today than in was in late 2005.

Yeah, I've heard stories from people who have had to deal with the European system, as well as the Canadian system. And I've talked with people who were visiting here to get actual care in a timeframe of less than a year. No thank you.
There is nothing wrong with the US system that couldn't be fixed by making the government and the lawyers more afraid of the citizens and doctors than the citizens and doctors are of them. I've had approximately 5 times as many tests and scans and whatever as I've needed over the last 5 or 10 years. Why? Because I needed a couple of things, and the docs are scared spitless of getting sued because they didn't test for something.
Some form of loser-pays is the biggest single thing that could help. Unsurprisingly, that was never even considered in the big Ocare fight. Because the lawyers had Obama and all those dems who voted for it in their pocket.
And someone remind me again of why my employer and I can't shop around for insurance policies in states other than where we physically live?

UK national insurance premiums are cheap and I don't care if Bob Cratchit's young son Tim-Tim, uses the service disproportionately. Better him than me, or any of my children, family, close friends, or loved ones and that's the attitude of most Brits. The health system is there if you need it, but apart from hypochondriacs we all pray we never have to use it.

My sister moved to the UK for some inexplicable reason and lives near London. For years she was having debilitating pain during her menstrual cycle. She went repeatedly to the UK government "healthcare service", which consisted of v-e-r-y l-o-n-g waits, NO diagnostic testing, no definitive diagnosis and of course no cure.
After listening to her crying in pain and despair for the Nth time, I told her to pack a bag, that I was coming to the UK to take her, bound and gagged if necessary, back to the USA, where I was ABSOLUTELY certain, having worked in medical research, that the doctors in the USA would at least perform whatever test was necessary to definitively diagnose the problem and then hopefully provide a cure.
Under this threat, she finally swallowed her pride, relented and agreed to accept my money to go to a private clinic. She was diagnosed IMMEDIATELY with endomitriosis, had a successful surgery, and has had zero problems since.
I used to live in Europe and traveled all around Europe for my businesses and have some really painful horror stories of my own to tell about the European socialist "healthcare" systems, which are mostly just WAITING for and PAYING for but not actually getting the healthcare that you need.
In the USA I can get ANYTHING that I want or need, including the best doctors and the most advanced diagnostics and treatments QUICKLY. I will take that over any socialist homogenized mediocrity and rationing.
That doesn't mean the U.S. has the best health insurance system.
Let the government offer a reasonably priced catastrophic plan with a variety of deductibles ($3500, $5000, $7500, $10000 etc.) Beyond that leave it to the market - a variety of plans and services.

I was an entrepreneur, I VOLUNTARILY SHOPPED FOR AND PURCHASED private individual health insurance IN THE FREE MARKET and I paid the premiums entirely myself, which I was happy to do because I had the plan that offered the maximum coverage of services and the lowest deductibles and out-of-pocket maximum. This is what the envy-motivated democrats refer to as a "cadillac plan", so they could NOT tolerate the existence of any such plan, regardless of me paying for it entirely myself.
After the passage of obamacare, the changes IMPOSED UPON ME COERCIVELY BY THE GOVERNMENT:
1. Reduction of services covered, eg advanced testing.
2. TRIPLED my deductible
3. DOUBLED my out-of-pocket maximum
4. INCREASED my premium by about 30%
5. forced the insurance company to drop my "cadillac plan" and forced me to choose a new plan with much less coverage and much higher costs
BUT in fairness to the parasite scum democrat party politicians, now:
1. I can get my non-existent children covered
2. I can get my non-existent tits, vagina and uterus covered

My wife and daughter paid 9 grand a year for their premiums and have a $7,500 deductible before anything kicks in. I was out of town and she felt very sick and went to the emergency room late at night. She had a yeast infection and flu, but after 90 minutes of testing (fuckers even gave her an MRI) we were out $5,000 out of pocket. I had my own insurance self-employed- was paying $600 a month with a $7500 deductible. I finally had to cancel. No insurance. Went to see my doctor this week and he says I may have suffered a minor heart attack and I'm waiting on lab results. He laid out all kinds of expensive tests I would need - stress tests, etc. Results of lab tests come Monday. Can't wait to see what he says then. I have a better plan -a rigid regimen of increased alcohol consumption. Thank you Obama - and Republican crooks who are also bought and sold and would not offer a viable alternative plan. Thing is -- before Obamacare it was still NOT a FREE MARKET in Health Insurance. It was still a highly regulated market, but there were at least more choices.
Now "the market" can only offer basically ONE PLAN, with minor modifications. If you do a comparison of what is offered, you will find that if you actuallly need to use the insurance for something "catastrophic" (the purpose of insurance), they all cost you about the same over the course of each year, with some differences for limited networks (not is ones best interest).
Can you imagine how much less people would pay if we operated with only catastrophic (true insurance) plans, and people paid cash for non-catastrophic services? I would even be okay with a competitve slew of "supplemental" plans (i.e. plan above and beyond "catastrophic" coverage) for those who wanted them.
The only meddling the government should be doing - perhaps beyond offering catastrophic coverage for everyone - is requiring plans be laid out in "plain english."

I agree that government is far from perfect.
I agree that the cost of some things goes up because of governement - when it shouldn't.
However, some of the increase in prices reflect the true cost of something - that only a body representing the society can enforce. Pollution is a good example. Harmful foods and products are another. As an individual, I can't make intelligent choices regarding these things, in part because all players will likely conceal the truth and most players are likely to be "bad" players.
Society and governance are complex. Government isn't all bad, nor all good. And how good or bad it is fluctuates.

In 2014 the Netherlands has maintained its number one position at the top of the annual Euro health consumer index (EHCI), which compares healthcare systems in Europe, scoring 898 of a maximum 1,000 points. The most common used ranking of European healthcare systems, the Euro health consumer index, is annually produced by the independent Swedish organization Health Consumer Powerhouse. The Netherlands has been in the top three countries in each report published since 2005. On 48 indicators such as patient rights and information, accessibility, prevention and outcomes, the Netherlands secured its top position among 37 European countries for the fifth year in a row. The Netherlands was ranked first in a study comparing the health care systems of the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany and New Zealand.[1][2]
Ever since a major reform of the health care system in 2006, the Dutch system received more points in the Index each year. According to the HCP (Health Consumer Powerhouse), the Netherlands has 'a chaos system', meaning patients have a great degree of freedom from where to buy their health insurance, to where they get their healthcare service. I mentioned this to a liberal friend who replied that Obama never promised that. He promised that the rates would increase $2,500 less than they would have had we not passed the affordable care act. It took great restraint to not laugh in his face.
By the way, my family's medical insurance premium increased by $3,000 per year for less coverage than we had before. But I'm grateful the government has gotten involved in health insurance because gosh, now it's so much better than before... /s
