US Senator Demands Ukraine "Walk Away" From Debt Payments To Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

Oh, the irony. A senator of the world's largest creditor nation has demanded America's allies do 'whatever it takes' to support Ukraine in breaking international law by refusing to pay back $3bn of debt owed to Russia in December. As RT reports, US Senator Chris Murphy of the Foreign Relations Committee exclaimed, "the international community should make it clear that we should take whatever steps necessary to give Ukraine the legal cover it needs to walk away from that debt... I don’t think Ukraine should be obligated to pay Russia back a dime." One can only wonder how US's creditors will feel about this perspective (maybe China and EM are already showing theirs).

In late August, a creditor committee led by Franklin Templeton (which owns about $7 billion of Ukrainian bonds) agreed a 20 percent write-off of some $18 billion worth of Eurobonds. Repayment of the remaining amount will be transferred from 2015-2023 to 2019-2027.

Russia has refused to accept Ukraine's haircut, saying it takes no part in “the so-called debt operation” and recommended that Kiev pay in full and on time to avoid “both litigation costs and penalty interest for overdue payments.”

The US has been "treating Russia with kid gloves on this question of the debt that Ukraine owes it," Murphy commented as RT notes...

The US and other countries should do everything to grant Ukraine the legal right to shrug off its $3 billion Russian debt due in December, said US Senator Chris Murphy of the Foreign Relations Committee in an interview with the Sputnik news agency.

"The international community should make it clear that we should take whatever steps necessary to give Ukraine the legal cover it needs to walk away from that debt…I don’t think Ukraine should be obligated to pay Russia back a dime," said the Connecticut senator to the agency on Thursday.

On September 30, the Senate committee will meet IMF chief Christine Lagarde to discuss Kiev's debt.

Ukraine’s government on Tuesday started restructuring public debt and suspended payments from September 23 on a number of liabilities that will be restructured. The restructuring, in particular, applies to the Russian $3 billion Eurobonds. However, the debt to Moscow was not included in the list of non-payments.

In March, the IMF approved a $17.5 billion loan to Ukraine as part of a four-year bailout plan in exchange for austerity measures. The lack of an agreement with Russia thwarts unlocking the funds.

Don't hold your breath US Taxpayers - you are about to be on the hook for more "guarantees" of a nation that we still find it hard to find any reason to be involved in.

Screwing Russia out of 3 billion USD is petty cash. I love the idea, however, since it sets the precedent for screwing the USSA fascist banksters. Creating debt out of thin air, and then acquiring assets for nothing, is great for them but bad for the 99.99%.  Lets fuck the banksters, and walk away from ALL debt.

Jubilee, bitchez!

As a side note to the diminishing fools that believe we live in a free market system, get your head out of your ass! There is no free market system, only fascistic mind control. Free yourself from the illusion that free markets exist. We live in a rigged game. If you do not know who is the patsy,  then....

Latina, The USA and UK basically "Fund Themselves", money printing and Central Bank Bond buying allow USG to issue debt to infinity. The UK is in a bit tighter spot, but still can basically print and buy their own debts. The privilige is due to Dollar Hegemony in world trade and reserve currency status, forcing other states to Earn Dollars to carry on foreign trade with.

Ukraine is in technical default to provate creditors. But State to State loans are not subject to "The Market". These are direct State to State issues. If Ukraine refuses to pay it's borrowed money back to Russia, Russia has options to act. The results will not be pretty and enrage the US Senators even more.

Urging default on loans is a very dangerous game. The Senate believes they hold a special type of world power, they are about to learn that their power no longer is unlimited.

JB, I am satirizing the imbecilic remarks of a bought and paid for senatorial whore.  Fools like him are used to put pressure on Russia to  discount its debt, as if 3 billion really matters. When morons like Murphy are rolled out to make obviously stupid suggestions, it's very clear that the situation in the rump Ukraine is far, far worse than publicly admitted.

The real problem is that the banksters paid to capture Crimea, and lost to Russia. Since then, they are steaming mad, angry that they couldn't steal what never belonged to them. For banksters, losing Crimea was a form of corruption/criminal interruptus, losing the big prize after assuming it was theirs to steal.

The Pentagon had already put out contracts for bids for specific air and naval bases, to be rebuilt to NATO standards! Now this bid contracts are meaningless. But they got so far ahead of it, they actually let out bids for the NATO take overs!

Ukraine issued a Memorandum for its bond holders, in which they appear to have grouped private and intra-goverrnmental holders. This memorandum implies that Kiev will not pay the $3 billion it owes to Russia. Russia therefore has the right to declare an immediate default of Ukraine.

https://z5h64q92x9.net/proxy_u/ru-en.en/www.e-news.su/mnenie-i-analitika...

Rusia's loan is covered by UK law, which means that it would have to place its case in London. So if any shenanigans go on, it will screw Ukraine and more importantly, London.

Edit: The $3 billion is on no real ssignificance to Russia, but the pleasure is seeing Ukraine and the UK squirm is - priceless

It would also put the IMF in the spotlight. It is already providing asistance to a country effectively at war (which is technically a no-no). If it continues when the country has defaulted then there goes IMF credibility. Another pillar of the western financial strangehold bites the dust. All for $3 billion. Genius!

Dear Mr. Murphy:

The people of the United States are famous for free iPhones and free money. Your willingness to default and/or declare bankruptcy in the blink of an eye on everything from your cars to your homes in a sham of "Democracy" is Legendary.

Your support of losers (like Mr Poroshenko), criminals, and other Banksters, including incompetent CEO's of large bankrupt American car companies and Hedge Funds is without equal and unequivovally unparalleled in the civilized world both now and also at any time in human history.

Your once beautifully functioning currently twisted and corrupted (through powerful lobbies and special interest group) political system (of which you are a part Mr. Murphy) has systematically destroyed everything good that was once American through greed, lies, deceit, apathy and general all around laziness.

Your culture is decaying around you morally and ethically.

However, in Russia, we expect to be paid back when we loan money.

We think that when you agree to do something and you put your name in writing that you agree to do so, that you have a responsibility to repay the money, with a reasonable amount of interest.

We are happy to run some classes for Americans (perhaps yourself included Mr. Murphy) on How Budgets Work and on how to keep some Honest Money In The Bank (Yes, I do realize that is an oxymoron with regard American Banks) as your current $18 trillion and rising daily deficit will never be repaid and you (through Mssrs. Bernanke and Yellen) have only succeeded in stealing money from poor American citizens for many generations to come.

Sincerely,

Vladimir Putin

If there is any hint that the NATO forces currently in Ukraine for exercies are going to take up permanent residence, then Donbass leaders have declared they will consider Minsk void and they will clear the rest of occupied Donstsk and Lugansk. The UkroNazis are making a big nuisnace of themselves in Kharkov so Kharkov oblast may be up for grabs.

The UkroNazis are also trying to block food trade between Ukraine and Crimea. They have setup roadblocks on the major roads into Crimea. The may be charging $1000 per vehicle to pass through. The big boys have found a work round, hiring barges to take their goods to Crimea, bypassing the road blockposts. The main effect is therefore falling on the many small scale local traders in the Kherson oblast. They are decidedly pissed off. It wouldn't take much to to trigger a reaction.

Finally, the UkroNazis are trying to blockade Transnistria to the west of the Odessa oblast (where the Georgia nutcase Suckassvilli has been given governship by the US). The Russians are legally established peace keepers over the Moldova / Transnistria conflict, so there are fully trained Russian troops with ~20,000 tons of weapons / munitions in place in Transnistria. Maybe Suckass and the UkroNazis will give the Russians legitimate cause to defend the peace, the way Suckass did when he decided it would be good for Georgia to attack Ossettia.

There are a more than a few levers that Russia could use against Ukraine whose economy teeters on the brink.

Russia could say, "fuck you" to the EU and the Ukraine and shut off the gas as winter sets in. This is the one I like most and wish they would do.

What our US warmongering neocons have done is stick us, the US taxpayers with paying for 40+ million people that produce absolutely nothing that the world needs.

Unless of course you want Ukrainian sunflowers, sugarbeets or grain.  40+ million people that produce shit that nobody in the EU or US wants or needs.

This means we the US taxpayers are gonna pay for this neocon folly, warmongering and regime change bullshit in the Ukraine.

And our US neocons were the aggressors in all of this bullshit.

What amazes and sickens me the most is our (US) involvement in the violent undemocratic overthrow of a sovereign nation.

Then our government and media’s lies placing the blame for the consequences of this action upon Russia and Putin.

Do they think we are that fucking stupid?

Murphy has been sued for nonpayment of his mortgage and non-payment of rent, and has also failed to pay taxes when due on several occasions.[63] In 2007, Chase Home Finance sued for foreclosure against Murphy, whose campaign initially responded by claiming that Murphy had missed "a couple of mortgage payments." Murphy claimed that he did not know he was in default until legal proceedings started. Murphy received a loan at the rate of 4.99% from Webster Bank in 2008 to consolidate his previous mortgages after being sued for foreclosure.[63] At the time of this loan, Murphy was serving on the House Financial Services Committee. In 2008, Webster Bank's political action committee made numerous donations to Murphy's campaign and in 2005 and 2006, Murphy worked for Webster as an attorney. In 2008, Murphy voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program which Webster received $400 million in 2009. Murphy's 2012 Republican opponent Linda McMahon accused him of receiving what she called "special interest loans," and called on Murphy to release his financial records. Bank officials and outside experts claim there was nothing improper about the loans made to Murphy.[63]

Russia ought to close its airspace to American commercial {and military} flights - and no more easy access to Afghanistan

The aggression, the lies, the controlled press - none of it will change, and the militarists {of whichever stripe} can not be reasoned with...

So hit America $ back - no more flights over Russian soil until the US stops helping Kiev murder its own people, while demanding Assad be removed for allegedly doing the same fucking thing.

- There are a lot of Jews from Ukraine.

- They do not like, nor trust Russia or Russian leadership.

- For all intents & purposes, they run United States foreign policy.

- What protects, expands and exploits other 'assets' to further its own goals, is the purpose.

- Bring on the Anti-Semitism canards, one & all -- I don't give a shit, and neither do a growing number who see this chicanery for what it is.

This really makes no sense. Banderist Ukrainians working with the SS massacred a lot of Jews in WW2. Why would Jews in the US want to bring neo-nazis to power in Kiev?

A Call for Concentration Camps

On the evening of June 17th prime time television viewers in Ukraine were treated to another of the neo-fascist performances that are now part of the country’s routine. Ideologist of the Ukrainian far right Dmytro Korchynskiy urged the Maidan regime to set up concentration camps for the Donbas’s and Crimea’s population and carry out a full ethnic cleansing and depopulation of the Donbas rebel regions and Crimea: “Americans are our teachers of democracy. The USA is truly the most democratic country in the world today. All democratic institutions were preserved in America during WWII, such as elections, etc. Nevertheless, several million American citizens were deported to particular concentration camps – American citizens of Japanese ethnicity. In wartime they constituted a potential threat. The USA, having preserved the high level of humanism inside its own nation, carried out a nuclear strike upon Japan. They also bombed German cities. Eighty per cent of residential buildings in Germany were destroyed by Anglo-American air raids. The doctrine implied shelling of residential areas first and foremost in order to demoralize German soldiers at the front, etc. Thus, we also should have the highest level of freedom in Ukraine. We have too little freedom. We should have more freedom. Nevertheless, in the front-line zone and occupied territories we should act in the American way; that is, if we lost territories and cannot get them back, they must be lifeless. If they cannot be ours, they ought belong to no one” (Dmytro Korchinskiy’s comments on Ukraine’s channel ‘112’, 17 June 2015 at “Na ukrainskom TV prizvali k sozdaniyu kontslagerei dlya zhitelei Donbassa,” YouTube, 17 June 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSv3fixJPc4, last accessed 19 June 2015).

Jewish Bolsheviks killed a lot of Ukrainians first.

The zealously guarded image of Jews as perpetual Eternal Sacred Victim requires whitewashing their role in the anti-christian massacres of the Bolsheviks, and for that matter the anti-Greek and anti-Roman massacres all over the Mediterranean

By the way, there were probably more Jews in Alexandria in the century before Christ than in Jerusalem. Jews always lived outside Palestine and other people always lived in side it.

But Zionism claims Jews have exclusive right to live where remote ancestors did 2000 years ago....... but also the right to live fat and happy anywhere they please in the civilized West - a west civilized because of Greece and Rome and more or less *despite* Judaism, which was always too Supremacist and xenophobic and prone to intellectual sophistry to lay the foundations for a broader secular/intellectual cultural ethos.

The Donbas will eventaully secede and who can blame them. Ukraine is falling apart and the US taxpayers will be left holding the bag.

Actually Ukraine is already dead:  http://thetruthspeaker.co/2015/04/19/10-reasons-ukraine-is-dead/

@US Senator Chris Murphy

Too right ... and the British should have been given the ability to cancel the lease-lend debt through US policy during the second world war. Well how about giving Greece the ability to walk away from their debt then , just to keep it equal because they can't afford it neither.

***********************************************************

So lets join up these dots though, cripple Russia, weaken Russia in helping Assad fight ISIS, so is this senator no more than an ISIS sympathiser? Then @Ukraine, you borrowed the money, incurred the debt AND NOW YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY. There is a whole load of other nations around the world that would like to do this but are trying to honour their debts.

It's funny how everyone worries about the post-collapse toilet paper...will it be available? Can I barter it? Will it be yellow?...lol!

I just came up with an idea for you all. Post-collapse, there will be plenty of scrap paper of all kinds...cardboards and packaging, newspapers and other printed crap, etc. If you grind it up and soak it, you can create a sort of oatmeal type mush.

That is paper! All you do is spread a very thin layer on an old window screen and let it dry thoroughly. Then peel it off in a sheet or pieces. Sure it's rough and unattractive. But you're wiping your ass with it, get real. Put some lotion on it if your little hienie is so tender.

Anyway, I just thought of that. It seemed like a good idea, so I thought I'd throw it out there, since the subject came up...

The U.S. Elite Run a Ukrainian Genocide While American Public Are Ignorant of It

http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2014/07/u-s-elite-run-ukrainian-genocide-...

On Wednesday, July 2nd, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko resumed unlimited war against the residents of southeastern Ukraine, whom he calls “terrorists” for their wanting not to be killed by his troops. European leaders (especially Merkel of Germany, Hollande of France, and Putin of Russia) urged him not to resume his bombing campaign against the southeast, but the U.S. (specifically President Obama) supports the bombings, and that’s enough for Poroshenko; so, he did it. As the U.S. State Department said, “he has a right to defend his country.” Reuters reports that Poroshenko gave as his reason for the resumption, “to rid Ukraine of ‘parasites’.”  Adolf Hitler had given the same reason for ethnically cleansing his country.

Dear Mr. Murphy:

The people of the United States are famous for free iPhones and free money. Your willingness to default and/or declare bankruptcy in the blink of an eye on everything from your cars to your homes in a sham of "Democracy" is Legendary.

Your support of losers, criminals, and other Banksters, including incompetent CEO's of large bankrupt American car companies and Hedge Funds is without equal and unequivovally unparalleled  in the civilized world both now and also at any time in human history.

Your corrupt political system (of which you are a part Mr. Murphy) has systematically destroyed everything good that was once American through lies, deceit, apathy and general all around laziness.

Murphy) on How Budgets Work and on how to keep some Honest Money In The Bank as your current $18 trillion and rising daily deficit will never be repaid and you (through Mssrs. Bernanke and Yellen) have only succeeded in stealing money from poor American citizens for many generations to come.

Sincerely,

Vladimir Putin
