Watch The Latest Russian War Preparations In Syria: Satellite Imagery Update

Tyler Durden's picture

Over the course of the last several weeks, Europe’s worsening migrant crisis and Russia’s stepped up military support for Bashar al-Assad’s forces at Latakia have conspired to wake the entire world up to Syria’s protracted civil war.

The interesting thing about Russia’s involvement is the extent to which Moscow’s approach to the conflict differs from The Kremlin’s handling of the crisis in Ukraine.

Whereas Putin has steadfastly refused to admit the scope of Russia’s support for the separatists at Donetsk, he’s made no secret of Moscow’s intentions in Syria.

Note the extent to which that assessment differs from Washington’s official line. While the US insists (loudly) that it cannot discern what Russia’s intentions in Syria are, The Kremlin has been remarkably (and uncharacteristically) clear. Put simply, Russia intends to bolster the army of its ally Bashar al-Assad against any and all anti-regime elements operating inside Syria and because some of those anti-regime elements happen to be extremists, Russia is effectively waging a war on terror by default. No mystery there.

However, because the US needs to buy time to figure out the best way to navigate an impossibly complex situation whereby Washington will either need to join its two fiercest foreign policy critics (Russia and Iran) in destroying Syrian rebels that in some cases were trained and supported by the Pentagon or else stand aside as the Russians do in a matter of months what the US air force has failed to achieve over the course of more than a year, The White House pretends to be completely confused about Putin’s intentions. This charade has piqued the public’s interest in Russia’s “mysterious” military buildup.

Having said all of that, one should of course approach any and all "evidence" of Russia's maneuvers with an appropriate amount of skepticism because, as we noted earlier this month, things like satellite images purporting to show just what Russia is doing and where in Syria "are the modern equivalent of Colin Powell's vial of WMDs presented to the United Nations in 2003 to justify the war with Iraq."

It's with all of the above in mind that we present the latest images that allegedly show the extent to which Russia is preparing for war from Bashar al-Assad's seaside stronghold.

 Thanks for the comment.

I see Russia playing the situation 2 ways.

1: Putin wants higher commodity prices, and he's going to be thorn in the side of NATO.

2: Putin wants higher commodity prices, and want's to tie things up quickly, so he can prove to China, that Russia really wants to price Russian oil in yuan, and start a fully functioning SWIFT alternative.

You see a lot of things Yen.  I want higher commodity prices too so I can dump a shitpile of silver back into the market.  I would never sell it all of course but I should have sold more at 49.50 minus the premium but that was bank because I was in early.  Lately I have just been sitting here twiddling my thumbs and waiting.  I have turned my attention to numismatics but it is hard for me to not buy bullion silver when I see it for the right price.  That is the problem though, you don't see silver anywhere near spot.

I have a collection of rare PM Russian coins that I have been collecting for about 15 years.  No Russian alive today has ever seen the coins I have and they never will again.  I have the documentation to back it up and every Russian guest I have shown the coins to is bedazzled because they didn't know that such coins even existed.  Thanks soviet.  Well, NOW they know.:-)  I love the priceless look on their faces.  I am not in it for the money per se but a guy has to make a couple of bucks here and there if he can.

My big issue is the that I can't seem to even get coins out of Russia very easily because of all the bullshit going on with trade restrictions.  I am lucky that I even have one set of the new cupro-nickel Crimea coins that Russia minted.  I wanted to buy at least a hundred sets.  OH NO YOU WON'T.  That is not how it works though.  I don't know why Russia didn't make them out of gold or at least silver either.  What is with the copper nickel bullshit?

I will be honest with you Yen and I think you know already, not that many Russians outside of Moscow really like Putin much or any politician.  If Moscow keeps it up they will eventually become as crooked as Merica and England are now.  The exchange rate on the dollar/ruble has hurt many Russians and for no good reason.  Russians can't buy PM's very easily and I have watched this for over a decade now in dismay.

This is bullshit.  I can't even send Banzai7 a silver bullion medallion(no denomination) because it is over 100 HK dollars in value.  It seems to be every country who makes up bullshit laws.  That is fucking ridiculous.

And these fools think we are crazy?

Heroin.  Same thing as SE Asia.  Dr. Jim Willie says that heroin money keeps the money center banks afloat and the money is laundered through them.

How much is that business worth?  My guess is $500 billion in profits a year.

I'm pretty sure cost isn't an issue Blankone.

It's more about the ease with which Russia can ingress and egress into the Syrian debacle.

My local contractor is likely the owner of said land, and has some sort of local guarantee, that he won't be shelled into submission, from long range artillery.

You'ld make an interesting game of chess.

No cost, no real investment means easy to abandon (not long term).

In all the photo's I did not even see them starting to build covered hangers for those expensive aircraft.  If you are gonna stay you should build a real house if in such a hot enviroment.  I would think, but I have no experience with maintaining planes and what effect hot sun and dust can do to performance jets.

If they start bulding out in northern Syria, that will send a message.  Not required for planes but a benefit for troops and helicopters.

LOL @ U2 - no one photoshops hangars for photoshopped planes because then you can't see them ;-)

Perhaps these are Russian special stealth planes that cast no shadows with a south-east sun, even though the low clumps of bushes east of the runway have shadows (see photo#2).

No.

Gog and Magog have nothing at all to do with the real world - apart from the idiotic, nonsensical belief many millions of people have that words written 2500 years ago "foretold" x, y,, and z.

It takes a kind of idiot savant cunning to be so stupid, yet so clever when it comes to jamming the round peg of reality into the square peg of gibberish penned by some xenophobic Bronze age priests.

Before insulting others while attempting to sound smart, you might want to do a little research first instead of relying on a tired old joke.  But why ruin the Neo Nazi narrative right?

The Bronze Age ended in the ANE at 1200 BCE.  The earliest books of the Hebrew Bible weren't penned until much later, probably around 900 BCE at the very earliest, putting them solidly in the IRON AGE.

You fucking Neo Nazi scumbags are intelectual peasants parading as savants.  Crawl back into that shithole you came from and do us all a favor.  Or better yet, take the warning labels off your household chemicals, get yourself a shot glass, and throw a 1 man party.

Meanwhile: Chinese Navy sets off for Syria -

According to the Russian Senator Igor Morozov, Beijing has taken decision to take part in combating IS and sent its vessels to the Syrian coast.

Igor Morozov, member of the Russian Federation Committee on International Affairs claimed about the beginning of the military operation by China against the IS terrorists. "It is known, that China has joined our military operation in Syria, the Chinese cruiser has already entered the Mediterranean, aircraft carrier follows it," Morozov said.

According to him, Iran may soon join the operation carried out by Russia against the IS terrorists, via Hezbollah. Thus, the Russian coalition in the region gains ground, and most reasonable step of the US would be to join it. Although the stance of Moscow and Washington on the ways of settlement of the Syrian conflict differs, nonetheless, low efficiency of the US coalition acts against terrorists is obvious. Islamists have just strengthened their positions.

As Leonid Krutakov told Pravda.Ru in an interview, the most serious conflict is currently taking place namely between China and the US. Moscow may support any party, the expert believes, and that is what will change the world order for many years.

So Obama Wants Talks with Putin on Syria?

TND Guest Contributor:  Finian Cunningham

After more than a year of demonising Russia as a threat to world peace, all of a sudden the United States changes tack and wants to hold talks with Moscow over Syria. US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin are set to hold talks in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting. The leaders will meet on Monday, 28 September, authorities from both the countries have confirmed. What a change from Obama’s churlish tantrums towards the Russian president!

NYU Professor of Russian Studes Stephen F. Cohen explained on the John Batchelor radio program that U.S. policiy makers are clueless, and what might be going on is a follows.

Russia has had a long standing (50 years) military relationship with Syria, and is committed to defending its interests.  The Assad regime represents Russia's interest.

Russia has a problem of Islamic terrorism in Russia.  There are terrorist bombings in Moscow, not to mention past problems in Chechnya and Georgia.

Russia wants to fight ISIS in Syria.  Russia wants to fight ISIS anywhere.

If Obama wasn't such a dumb bell, he would realize that HE wants to fight ISIS too.

Putin likely wants to have a meeting with Obama so he can explain to Obama that the U.S. and Russia are on the same side in fighting ISIS and it would help matters if Obama would just back off and shut his big mouth about Assad and Russian bases in Syria.

Answer.

Yes, it is the right time of day.  Why would you want shadows cast in your surveillance photos??

Think about it clearly:  If you had to take photographs, what time would be best?  Noon hour.

<<I recall seeing shadows in other satellite photos.>>

No, you do not recall seeing "satellite" photos.  You just thought you were. Rather, you saw surveillance photos.  Slightly different but in the theater of war, it matters.  Whoever controls the air space, controls the narrative by virtue of being able to monopolize photographic propaganda.

I'm afraid I have to question the idea that the photos were taken (around noon) or at any other time of day so as to minimize shadows.  Damascus is located at Latitude 33(deg)33'36'' North (of the equator).  The photos presumably were taken at around the Fall Equinox - hence the sun at noon is only directly overhead if you are located on the equatorial line.  At noon Damascus time the sun would be located to the south (offset 33degrees), casting shadows near due north.  In fact at no time of day would the Syrian sun at this time of year -not- cause shadows to be cast.  I don’t see such shadows (not even with the IL-76).

Site features???? What kind of jingoism is that??

You are just afraid to say buildings.  Well, duh! Of course buildings will have visible --- i.e. LONGER --- shadows than a plane will.  Duh.

So, what is your point???  You say the photos are fake.

OK.  So, they are fake.  How about your handlers put a call into Google Earth asking:  "So?  Can we get some photos??  What the hell are your "satellites" doing up there anyways???"

It does not matter whether they are real or fake.  Until the shills show the world "real" photos, whoever controls the airspace will control the narrative.

Israel has been supporting Al Qaeda offshoots and very probably ISIS - in addition to the terrorism they've done themselves in the past, and otherwise engaged in or sponsored in Lebanon, Egypt and Iran.

Fuck Israel.

So, in the Empire of Three Cities theory, London is the banking center, the Vatican is the spiritual center and DC is the military center.  Looks like the empire is either dying or trying to do some type of merger and acquisition with the BRICS this week.

Not too many people are Catholic anymore, so I guess that's why they're plastering it all over the news that he is healing children and millions are showing up to his mass.  It's a dog and pony show to impress the BRICS that the Three City Empire still has power over the people.  I wonder if he'll be giving the mass in Spanish.

assad to outlast erdogan?

the ussa backed gulin 'islamic movement madrasses [disorderly conduct?] fomented in central asia would create havoc in chechen jihadist growing rebel-terrorist army.

putin could help erdogan or throw him to the wolves as the ussa is already going to do to erdogan [tier iii expulsion now tier i for immediatetermination?], after turkeys iran/gold transfer helping said counry with imperial sanctions disobedience[?] defied their master...[!]

Ps.  (*not to forget erdogan slaughtering kurds and ussa/cia turning over ocalan with the british airforce outing the ussa/turkey genocide looking the other way. all orchestrated by fucking berger/ albright/ clinton & bootlicker tenet!)

why has the cia/fbi harbored mr. gulin and his multi-billion dollar gulin'madrassas' movement in the heart of ussa?

Exactly.  The attack on Kobani was preceded by a line of armoured vehicles half a mile long on the open road.  Could have been wiped out by drones and air attacks yet not a vehicle was hit on the way.

Let's hope you're right.  When the Chechen jihadis began to overstep the mark and launch attacks inside Russia Putin ordered the armed forces to take them out, no holds barred, totally wiping out the head-choppers.  Not nice but the likes of ISIS cannot be reasoned with.

See the lush green around coastal Syria?  See the mountains that divide it from the desert?

Thats the chunk of land Assad /Russia will keep.  ISIS can pound sand in the rest of Syria.
