If car guy Eric Peters is right (and I'm not saying that he is), then the VW "scandal" is something else altogether:

None of the VW cars now in the crosshairs are unreliable, dangerous or shoddily built. They were simply programmed to give their owners best-case fuel economy and performance. Software embedded within each vehicle’s computer – which monitors and controls the operation of the engine – would furtively adjust those parameters slightly to sneak by emissions tests when the vehicle was plugged in for testing. But once out on the road, the calibrations would revert to optimal – for mileage and performance.

Now, the hysterical media accounts of the above make it seem that the alteration via code of the vehicles’ exhaust emissions was anything but slight. Shrill cries of up to “40 times” the “allowable maximum” echo across the land.

Well, true.

But, misleading.

Because not defined – put in context.

What is the “allowable maximum”?

It is a very small number.

Less than 1 percent of the total volume of the car’s exhaust. We are talking fractions of percentages here. Which is why talk of “40 times” is so misleading and, frankly, deliberately dishonest.

40,000 people die long agonizing pulmonary constriction deaths from air pollution and the VW CEO gets very rich. Minor indeed.

I'm not talking about whatever golden parachute Winterkorn gets; I'm just wondering whether Eric Peters is right about the percentage of total exhaust emissions that VW has been caught cheating on.  If he's right, then this could be a witch hunt of cataclysmic proportions, not just for VW and its suppliers but for the German economy and beyond.

My big question is when it comes time to RENEW the license plates on these cars, which includes the annual or biannual smog inspection, WILL THESE CARS PASS OR WILL THEY BE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD?

IN either case, THEN WHAT?

The government didn't even catch them. An Independant tester blew the whistle.
Now I thinking, he could have went to VW and asked for a consulting fee. But that might me construed as criminal.

Now I'm thinking he may be entitled to a percentage of the fine.

Either way, the EPA was clearly outgunned by the German enginneers. Which is probably not saying much.

Germany made the mistake of being too friendly with Russia and did not want to go along with the ZATO psychopaths.   So your biggest car company gets attacked - just like Toyota for not unionizing US plants or BNP for helping Russia sell off their worthless US Treasury bonds.

VW-Audis are still pretty crappy but they did not kill 147 people like GM-Obama-UAW Motors with defective ignitions.

There's no EU. There are open borders and a common currency and of course a massive amount of bureaucracy. Europe with its sovereign nations will inevitably join a Russo/Sino alliance and ultimately pacify the Middle East. Only Europeans can deliver real freedom to the Middle East in form of a European style Renaissance and Reformation.

The muslims are behind the eight ball because they've been stripped bare of their best and brightest thinkers, philosphers and interpreters of the Koran. It's been an ongoing process for decades now.

Humanity.

In general I would remain skeptical of schemes having born out only misery and death for the supposed beneficiaries of collectivist 'success'.

Lets just say that 'science' suggest central planning has only one end, and that that end is cataclysmic for individual human persons?

Society is 'run' on a 'script'...at least in theory. And largely in practice as well.

Some 'shows' are better than others.

This current one isn't very good. Not good at all. Very bad.

Turn it off?

If I had a Diesel VW, and I was asked to bring it in for a recall, unless the EPA would prevent my car from passing inspection I probably wouldn't bother, since the Recall will probably lower the millage of my car.

If given the choice between fuel economy and performance or cleaner emissions, well, cleaner emissions be damned, the fuck I care, no one buys a Diesel Automobile for cleaner emissions, you buy a diesel automobile so you can.... burn diesel fuel.

And as far as the U.S. Govt deceiving the public, well thats what governments do , governments are a business, and the business is operating a Tax Farm For Profit, they quite frankly dont care who they are deceiving as long as tax revenue comes in and the million dollar golf outings continue.

The EPA'S "crack down" on Volkswagen has little to do with protecting the environment, and everything to do with charging VW some fines/milking them.

As far as I am concerned, VW was doing consumers a favor by providing them with better fuel economy and a way to subvert government emissions tests.

Diesel VWs are a drop in the bucket compared to Diesel burning tankers and freighters circling around the globe. Not to mention the massive fleet of military equipment that's idling all around the world for no apparent reason just to keep pretending there's a reason to have this military.

If you're happy with the mileage and the performance of your VW - DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES!

Absolutely! In my view, what VW did was morally equivalent to "cheating on their taxes." Fuck the govenment.

The size of the fine tells me that this has more to do with keeping diesels out of the USSA, possibly because they compete with electric cars and threaten GM.

The EPA'S "crack down" on Volkswagen has little to do with protecting the environment, and everything to do with charging VW some fines/milking them.

It also gives lie to the EPAs stated mission of improving fuel efficiency.

I stopped taking my Toyota for inspection over ten years ago. Over that time, I was stopped six times for speeding. Only three cops noticed the sticker. One warned me to get the car inspected and two ticketed me. The fines cost about seventy dollars each. The reason I did it was because the cost of repairs to bring the car up to emission standards was substantially more than the cost of the two tickets.

I have a new car now, an Audi. I don't plan on getting my cars inspected ever again. BTW, I'm thrilled with the S5 I bought. Now I'm even more proud to be an Audi owner. Time will tell how reliable it is.

Seems to me that VW met the letter of the law. The vechicle must pass the emissions test. It says nothing about emmisions while the vechicle is actually on the road.

Anyone asked how many other atuo manufactures are stepping up to admiting the same thing? Kudos to VW for being smart.

They have too much chassis flex. Lamborghini is geat show car.

The front subfame has always been weak. Too much torsional flex.

Ferrari has classic unbridled heritage. I owned my first Ferrari ( 1980 308 GTSi)

That car was like riding around on a wash-board. Really rigid. I had to cover it at night, in the underground parking structure. It was red with tan Connolly leather.

Man the valve train clater from that small block (blueprinted) Italian V-8 was music to my ears.

A. Volkswagen tweaking the parameters to "game" the EPA's pollution testing of it's diesel engines in 10,000 cars? Or,

B. East Anglia University Climate Research Unit MAKING UP parameters to put into computer climate models relied on by the UN IPPC to create completely bogus historical "hockey stick" temperature graphs to justify TRILLIONS of dollars in global carbon taxes?
