A German Explains Why VW's "Moral Demise" Is A Burden For The Entire Nation

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted byClemens Bomsdorf via Saxo Group's TradingFloor.com,

  • Up to 11 million cars, equal to annual VW group sales, might have to be recalled
  • Volkswagen is Germany's biggest employer
  • VW is seen as the country's most important company
  • Family ownership of VWs near universal in Germany
  • The moral demise of VW is a burden for the whole country

VW Bug
Maybe the US fans that called the Beetle Bug already knew the company's future trouble.

Volkswagen’s enormous scandal, aka #dieselgate, is shaking up a whole country –Germany. That is not only because the car maker is its biggest private employer, it is more than that. Volkswagen is Germany. With the future of the company as a main player of the motor industry at risk, the German self-perception and its image as the land of correctness and perfectionist engineers are brought into question.

Successful, but humble

Until very recently VW was just like Germany: successful, but humble. Now people in Germany have to ask themselves how it can be that the success of the biggest player in its most famous industry was partly built on misusing German engineering perfectionism for cheating.

Could it be that what made many German companies become world leaders – not accepting solutions that aren’t perfect – actually worked against them?

Fearing a management that does not take a “No, under this circumstances it is impossible” as an answer, very ambitious and talented employers instead of admitting that not everything is doable, might have used their capabilities to deny they are not perfect.

A car company like a country

Hence, something might have been seriously wrong with the company’s culture. Now, up to 11 million vehicles – which equals roughly twice the January-July 2015 sales of Volkswagen Group (mainly consisting of VW) – might have to be recalled.

Does that mean there might be something seriously wrong with Germany as a whole as well? After all, the story of VW has mirrored the story of the whole country more than any other corporation’s.

It did so from its foundation during and by the Nazi regime to the recent restoration of Germany as an economic superpower. The car maker showed that Germany cannot (and of course it should not) deny its ugly past. By facing up its history honestly, the company was able to position itself as the main pillar of the European motor industry and a force to be reckoned with internationally. (As recently as the start of this year VW announced it would soon employ more than 600,000 people world-wide).

No class of its own

What VW made in the car world, Germany managed on the political and societal stage.

The company and the country are still interwoven like no others. Not only is VW the private entity employing most people in Germany and therefore extremely important for its wellbeing. The state of Lower Saxony is also its controlling shareholder. It is also therefore that it attracts attention like no other. (For a satirical approach to the history of VW's failures read this article.)

Merkel

German chancellor Angela Merkel once drove a Golf, it was sold on eBay.

How strongly even those neither working in the sector, nor living in Lower Saxony relate to VW is revealed by the term “Generation Golf”. The title of one of the most famous German non-fiction books of the last 15 years has become a synonym for those born around 1970 – just as the writer Douglas Coupland made the term “Generation X” famous.

This would never have happened had not almost everybody in Germany have somebody in the family driving a VW. It is also the classless car with lawyers, consultants, teachers, workers, students and chancellors-to-be all driving a Golf without using it to distinguish themselves or say anything about their economic status.

Having not only the economic, but also the cultural importance of VW in mind, it becomes clear why the scandal is hitting Germany so hard and why there is the fear that the image of the country and its industries as a whole might suffer.

Hold those responsible accountable not an entire nation or hiding those responsible under a  corporate name (VW) as it is merely bricks and mortar/paper.  Workers in VW ought to be able to hold their own court, do their own discovery to protect their jobs and company future.  Turn those found guilty over  to civilian courts with no golden parachutes.

VW is being made an example of in retribution for something they have done or are unwilling to do.   Nothing else.   This has nothing to do with polution and everything to do with corruption.  They met the emission requirements, just not in the way the cheating creators of these requirements intended.  Consider it analog to tax minimisation vs tax cheating.  The only difference is in how many senators you own.

Germany, no, others, will not allow the ghost of Hitler be forgotten which puts Germans in a situation of feeling eternally guilty/in debted and afraid to do anything that hints of inhumanity.  They are trapped until they release these media driven chains.  Current generations feel no responsibilty for sins of their fathers and want to move on, like many others trapped similiarly.

This epiphany reportedly came out 18 months ago. The timing of he release of this bombshell is obvious. It followed Merkel's suggestion that the west should sit down and talk to Assad and Putin. You'd care if you lived in a high smog city and your kids had respiratory problems.

Smog has a huge impact on health. When I lived in LA I had chronic, miserable, never-ending bronchitis. Moved back to No. Cal and it went away for good.

I have lived in China, so I know what smog is.  I understand what you are saying but the smog in LA is not just VW's fault and I think we have to introduce a bit of perspective here.  Living is a dangerous thing to do: we want cheap cars, we want cheap energy - how much radiation is in the waters off LA from Fukushima?  I don't know because they won't tell me but I do know that Japanese fish is now 'deemed safe' in the US, so they don't even test it anymore.  Pollution is politics: I guess it depends which side of the fence you chose.

Sun, 09/27/2015 - 17:57 | 6600111 ElectroGravitic
ElectroGravitic's picture

The smog and radiation is the fault of the misanthropic cabal which has hidden cheap, clean energy from humanity for more than 100 years. Since the price of energy is embedded in everything from food to housing, this has caused damages in excess of $600 Trillion in addition to unnecessarily polluting our biosphere. Put a price on that!

And as for socially significant organization like VW, GM etc. refusing to use this clean energy technology, is itself a crime.

Banks  that have to buy and sell, and make it somewhat public.

Leftovers of the Mortgage problems and other failures are claimed as assets and are not sold.

As assets , they are leveraged for 0 s and 1 s and put into other assets.

Partially agree. Like most people, my now deceased boss (one hell of a man!, may he rest in peace), bought a Golf GTI diesel for the fuel economy. The man had a massive classic car collection but drove that Golf GTI daily. If he would have worried about almost imperceptible differences in NOx, he would have bought a hybrid or a Tesla. Instead he happily drove that GTI. Most who care about Globull warming or pollution (and in major cities it makes sense) would buy a hybrid not a GTI.

In my case, I drive an 02 Ford F150. I live in the American SW so pollution is not a concern in this area. Not enough cars per square mile to be a factor.

Ok - so let me spell out in clear terms how to solve the VW problem.

1..... Re-test all the cars with a change in the computer controll system in place ... detune the vehicles so that under no circumstance can the engine ever rev over 4,000 RPM.   (then give the upgrade free on the internet)

2..... Install a water fuel cell as standard ... this will boost power and reduce emisions.   (Currently the American government is suppressing the technology.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOGAkRkCWfA

3......Install a particle collector in the exhauste as prescribed by Dyson ... to remove and particulates ... feed these back into the inlet for reburning. Or use this device  -  GEET generator 0:54 min into vid- :-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtuwIMysSMo

4......Put 20% vegetable oil in every full tank of Diesel ----- you will have more than enough BHB at 4,000 RPM to do over 120 mph with a 1.9 turbo diesel enging from VW.

5..... Hire a the mad Physicist from the UK called John Blacker and he will show you how they all work.

Notice VW is not saying much about this. One might expect the VW PR team would be more on top of this?

If we are going to be kicking around automotive ECUs. I have a few good questions that I would love getting straight answers to.

Fuck all the car giants and the regulators they rode in on.

Fuck that shit! Run straight pipes out the fucking hood. Maybe all that polution will coat some of the aluminum oxide and cause it to fall in the water supply before you breath it and get alzheimer's.

Agreed, the entire world is falling for the narrative that VW is bad because it flouted the EPA regs. I take the opposing view; the EPA regs are impossible to achieve and VW should be lauded for delivering cars with superior overall economy to it's customers.

close the EPA along with all the other obsolete alphabet .gov agencies that only remain in existence to be used as weapons against freedom.

German "superiority" is a history of failures on a massive scale.  WW-I, WW-II, the Hindenberg, Volkswagen, to name only a few.

Perhaps if they had not insisted in murdering or driving off their best scientists and smartest citizens they might have done better.

Not at all my dear.  I'm just older than you with a longer memory.  History goes back farther than last week or even last year but, even so, there are plenty of recent examples. Their cars aren't all that good, none of them, and rapidly lose market value after a very few years because they start to fail and are almost impossible to repair.

Come on with the bullshit, Zerohedge.  What fucking moral demise?  Let's be clear about something, VW lied about some shit pertianing to emissions on EPA standards.  So let's revisit - VW gets around nanny state bullshit regulations forced down their throat by an unConstitutional alphabet soup agency filled with a bunch of useless bureaucrats, and somehow VW did something morally egregious?

Not ONE car where this "atrocity" occurred had any defects, none were unsafe, none had operaitonal deficiencies - so where is the crime?  If you're not gonna buy a VW car over this then you are a true fucking retard.  The outrage should be over the EPA, the EPA's very existence, and their I guess we could say obvious desire to scare more investment and jobs out of the country, as if the rest of the fucking government wasn't already doing a bang up job on that.

More and more articles meant for Huffington Post are winding up on ZH, can't wait for you guys to roll out another class warfare piece to appease your newly found FSA readership.  Open ass, remove head ZH.

Impossible rules beget cheating. Asinine, unrealistic environmental regulations must be circumvented by companies that wish to stay in business. I'm sure there is, right now, a veritable tidal wave of rule-skirting occurring on multiple fronts throughout the entire corporate world. Communism was well-known for this sort of thing. Everybody cheated. Everybody fudged their numbers because the system was unworkable, but they had to at least create the appearance that the stupid rules were being followed.

A wise leader is someone who knows not to make rules that cannot be followed. Law and order is good; discipline is good; high standards are good, yes--but at the right times, in the right places, for the right reasons, and to the right degrees. It requires great prudence and experience to know what the right course is, and our present leaders have none.

Should be careful who you get in bed with.

And if you do get in, don't be surprised to be screwed.

With friends like US, who needs enemies.

Throughout history Germans have always been very good at tactics and execution.

But their strategy and choice of allies has been devastating to say the least.

Berlin fell 3 times into the hands of Russians, just because of that poor choice of strategic partners.

And with their current choice - it is either 4th fall or nuclear ashes.

Honesty in Germany is the product of "the state is so strong, I will probably get found out if I e.g. don’t pay taxes,  don't insure my car"  and/or "my neighbours are so nosy and selfish that they will betray any wrong doing"   rather than "I am inherently honest and trustworthy".

This fits into the history piece by Snyder -   national stereotypes break down once people are outside the state frameworks they are used to behaving in.  You may even find that people from anarchic states have a better inner moral code of honour than those who have been brought up in nanny states where law breaking is always punished, so you never really find out how people would behave if you just started trusting them.
