Yep, I'm seriously considering it. I register in a state with no emissions testing, though the winters are harsh for diesel. The only problem is they will issue a software patch and after a while no one will think that my TDI will be one of the pre software update ones. But then again I will :-)

Here's what you do for maximum effect. Take a stock TDI, then purchase a performance 'chip' (reflashed ECU -- 50 state legal), then start driving around known hipster areas, and roll coal.

Yes, an incredibly strange article. I've spent plenty of time in the woods, and generally speaking it is cooler in the woods than in open areas, especially cities. Or more accurately, there is a delay in warming and cooling as the trees essentially act like a shelter, and this sheltering also acts towards less temperature extremes. If the trees are releasing heat then it'd be interesting to know when, because I don't see it.
It seems the issue is this idea that trees are absorbing extra carbon, like the oceans, and once it is released there will be additional warming - the rest of the article is basically an absurd solution to this hypothesis. The solution, if the hypothesis is true, is quite the opposite: people and industries need to stop producing to infinity if there is to be less pollution, and trees need to be planted along historical lines and not for immediate cultivation.
It's as if they're unloading the problems of pollution onto trees. Perhaps the chemicals mix with tree chemicals to make a worse substance, but it's really only nature that can restore itself and filter out the pollution. Scientific meddling while adding more pollution won't do a damn thing.

absolutely true. the fucktards at the epa calculate emissions per gallon burned, rather than per mile traveled. this compels diesel engine manufacturers to de- tune the engines to run far below their maximum efficiency. phsyics dictates that the hotter the combustion reaction, the more complete the energy transfer from fuel to propulsion will be. unfortuantely this means more NOx is created as a by-product of these high temperature reactions. to solve this problem, most car makers force the cars to 'eat their farts' recycling de-oxygented exhaust gas into the intake manifold, paradoxiaclly decreasing reaction temperature (even though it uses hot exhaust gas to do so). they also retard timing of fuel injections to send more of the energy out of the exhaust instead of a big hot bang pushing back on the piston. One must also consider that the modifications producing less efficient reactions also increae wear on the engine, and the old cummins million mile clubs will not be in the future. new fixes rely more on squirting urea into the exhaust, and allow greater efficenty of reactions with addendant NOx production, cured more simply by an exhaust treatment. alot smarter, and will likely be the fix VW adds just like mercedes, ford, and even cummins this year have turned to.

My TDI gets 52 mpg. If the EPA was measuring pollution per passenger mile they would not be on VW's case. They do measure parts per million of NOX which somehow makes a great big road hog look good. The EPA wants to end good fuel efficiency to reduce NOX a problem in cities but not out on the open road where people like me drive.
The problem is not ignorance in Portland. The problem is a government agency that spreads ignorance, like, well, pollution.

I can travel well over 500 miles without stopping for a few more gallons of fuel and that's a mathematical fact. Do this math for me - What is the value of an electric car when the batteries have reached the end of their useful life and replacement cost is more than the resale value of the vehicle?

Hey, Einstein, electricity is not a source of energy. Energy is required to generate electricity. Nevertheless, an electric car allows you to use ANY source of energy to create the electricity to run it, which makes electric vehicles much more flexible and reliable than any vehicle that can only run on a single source of energy.
I just test rode a Zero Motorcyle. It's totally electric and a great ride. Still has problems with recharging time if you want to take a long trip. But it's gonna be great within 50 miles of home.

I have worked as a winter test driver for VW in Alaska and always admired the way former VW CEO Ferdinand Peich ran the show. As an aside the power struggle between Porsche and Audi has taken a turn for the worse for Audi as the new VW CEO is a Porsche man. That could put a hitch in my giddyup as Porsche doesn't send their stuff up here for winter testing and dodging moose and caribou in an RS7 at -40C is one of the simple pleasures of my life.
VW's are some of the worst engineered cars in the world. The cup holders are too small to hold US cups! They put the cup holder under the dash so you have to tip your soda to get it to fit in the holder. The upholstery falls apart after 1 year. The crazy treatment on the plastic parts comes off and gets sticky after 2 years. The boxter engine has a plastic splash guard that comes off when you rub it on a curb. After that every puddle you go across sets all the sensors screwy.

I owned a 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg 1.8T. There is a reason they only cover it for 2 years/24k miles! I has so many problems with that turd, I sold it within 1 year of ownership. Heated seats short circuited and shocked my ass, litteraly! Window rolled down and ka-thunk fell inside the door... 80 mile trip in Colorado to nearest dealer in 10 degree weather. Wastegate on turbo failed. Tail light on one side failed monthly. Rubber covered plastic rubbed off and looked like crap, the spark plug wires failed and left me stranded in Seattle. And this list goes on! All in 1 year of ownership. NEVER BUY A VW.
The only upside to the car was it hauled ass for a 4 banger and got decent mileage when it wasn't floored. Other than that it sucked a bag of monkey cocks.
I bought an Audi A6 new in 2000. A $44K sticker car back then (like $80K in 2015 dollars). Brakes failed early...recall. Multiple problems with crankcase ventilation and turbos. Electronic problems. I was afraid to take it any more thana 3 hours from home the nearest Audi dealership.
Then, after 75K miles of babying it (still on the original brake pads), the transmission completely failed, as in ate itself up. At one time we had 3 Audis. Now my wife has a TDI JSW, and I have a Hyundai and a used Toyota 4runner.

As far as the jet engine... The USA did that first, used them on the railroads...i think Vanderbilt "bilt" the first jet engine or something like that. I didn't learn how to read until after i got my digreye so my history is a bit vague, as is my memory.
