No, they are not better than GM. VW has a horrendous reputation when it comes to quality. You buy a VW or Audi if you want endless problems that are impossible to fix.

Ive got a 1993 Audi 100 CS with 237,000 miles on it that starts right up and runs like a charm.  Did I mention it gets about 38 MPG?  Range is about 550 miles as it has a big tank.  I keep it because I want to teach the kids to drive a stick shift, almost impossible to get a fun car in 'Murrika today

I would never buy a car from the Government Motors assassins

My old boss had a VW, can't remember the model, his ignition key switch got to where is would sometimes not work. The dealership said they would have to replace the hole dash assembly. Was going to cost about half of what the car was worth to fix. I suggested he do what Seinfeld did with his stinky BMW.

I do about 30,000 miles a year here in Blighty, and the car I see broken down most often is BMW, then VW. Could just be because there are so many, though.

My 2005 Jetta TDI 5 MT has 205k on the clock. It's had two minor unplanned maintenance events (breakdowns) in 10 years.

The original clutch finally started slipping at 204k. It's averaged 43MPG over it's entire life, including towing a popup camper.

I also owned until about 2 weeks ago (PTL)  a 2006 Beetle TDI DSG. Total POS.

The difference: the wagon was made in Germany, the Beetle in Mexico.

Even though the engines are identical, everything else is different. The suspension was made in MX as well.

The interior on this <100k mile car is falling apart. The suspension is garbage.  The transmission is a timebomb waiting to detonate and when it does the car will be scrap metal (minus the engine), because that incredibly sophisticated DSG trans costs more to fix than the car is worth, north of $5k.

So if you're considering buying a VW, make goddamn sure it's got 3 pedals, and make sure it's built in Germany, not Mexico. Also avoid the gasoline powered models.

The quality difference between the mexican and German VWs is so stark as to be almost unbelievable.

I 've been working on, restoring, and racing cars since I was knee high to grasshopper.

These are my observations about the quality and reliability of VWs. They are not all created equally.

why rub salt in the wound of the driver/owner?   they are doubtless aware that they were duped, and quite unhappy about it, no need to punish them more.  VW almost certainly alienated the specific demographic that they were most wholeheartedly trying to embrace -- the clean-diesel greenies.

what is it that the marketing folks used to say?  something about 10x time harder & more expensive to win back an alienated customer than to fetch a new one....?

(disclosure -- bought my wife a cute little jetta tdi diesel 2 years ago...great car, peppy (manual trans version), great mileage, fun to drive.  appealed to her greenie instincts.  now she hates it and is ashamed to drive it to work, but the only alternative is my huge gas-hog off-road 4WD that i use for hiking access....   we're right in there with the other gullible muppets on this one.)

I was thinking of buying a BMW, Audi, or VW car at a reduced price also.  Really the pollutants this car is putting out is far far less than those of the 70's.  See Eric Peters article on unobtainable and ever higher pollution limits as justification for continued EPA Existance.

Years ago a friend was charged by the EPA for "polluting" a river becasue the groundwater he was dumping into the river exceeded EPA standards for copper.    However it was the naturally occuring water which contained too much copper, which also meant the EPA should be charging everyone who flushes a toilet, becasue that water also contrains too much copper....

Seriously doubt if there is particulate RADIUM in your water - probably it's

RADON (Rn) - a colorless, odorless gas produced by decay of naturally-occuring radioactive mineral radium in granite.

Both drastically increase lung cancer chances.

No, you are wrong.A VW owner got just what was promised on the sticker; it was the EPA who got ripped off, and they're pissed. Weed isn't strong enough to create that kind of delusion.

That kind of fucked up thinking comes from a bottle of whiskey, a line of coke, or a shot of meth.  Or maybe a handful of Oxycontin.

People like to say "what's he smoking" when somebody says or does something stupid. But the ironic thing is that cannabis just isn't that strong.

Our perfectly safe and legal alternatives, like booze and pills, are, and create and support they type of delusional mindsets seen on both coasts. I guess benzos and SSRIs also contribute.

Weed will do just enough to make you say 'fuck it'. But it won't cause delusions like those other drugs.

That's why it's illegal. It doesn't work well enough to make you swallow propaganda. In fact it makes you question things, rather than blindly accept.

Maybe I need more flouride, estrogen, GMOs, soy, and anti depressants so these liberal arguments will start to make sense.

Because no matter how much weed I smoke, I just can't get there from here.

I've been around vw diesels and they sure smell and look clean running. No smoke, no odors. Can't say the same for some of the diesel pickups running about. Is this another mountain from a molehill kind of thing?

Something odd has been going on here for years now. Back in the early eighties most small car and truck manufacturers (including VW) were selling diesels here. Seemingly overnight they all went away. Then about ten years ago we started seeing small diesels again. VW had a awesome v-10 diesel that was a beast. Suddenly dealers were calling their customers and trying to buy them all back. Now they are non-existent. Meanwhile Europe and the rest of the world have been up to their eyeballs in diesels. I have asked dealers about diesels in jeeps as it would seem the ideal engine for a wrangler, and they have told me that they are available in Europe, just not here. SO what is the deal? Why is it that our progressive savants have been dragging us by our hair to match Europe in virtually every way...except diesels.....they just ain't clean enough for us. Given the still relatively few diesel passenger cars on the road here, it is hard to imagine they constitute much of a "threat".

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 16:09 | 6603387 Anopheles
Anopheles's picture

What happened?  The standards for diesel fuel in the rest of the world increased to be much cleaner.  The US didn't change.   So the high performance diesels they were selling in Europe really wouldn't run here on our crappy fuel.

There was also the GM fiasco in the 80's with their converted car engines that self destructed after a year.   That put people off diesels.

Now, the US has increased the quality of diesel fuel to match Euro and international standards, but at the same time, they increased pollution controls on diesels FAR above anywhere else in the world.  So the same problem exists, that Euro diesels can't easily be sold in the US .

Mon, 09/28/2015 - 16:38 | 6603609 Oldwood
Oldwood's picture

But why? There is always a reason. This is too stupid to be stupidity. After years of running high sulfur diesel, they changed the standards (as I understood it) to make euro diesels viable here. As soon as they did that, they raised the standards so we still can't buy them? I can't believe it is just US manufactures trying to block them given there are no true AMERICAN manufacturers left. Or is it just simple progressive hating on oil, coal, nukes and anything else that might provide cheap and abundant energy? The electric light bulb changed the world as we could suddenly work all day AND all night which changed our productive output hugely. Now that they want to reverse all of that, maybe simply putting us back into darkness is their ultimate solution.

You're thinking of N20, NOx has a half life of a couple of days in the atmosphere and tends to cool the atmosphere.

The problem with NOx is on contact with water it turns into nitrous and then nitric acid. Not only does nitric acid eat metal, it also eats things like lungs, which have a moist mucous layer.

It's difficult to process in a car because it's already oxidised, you have to un-oxidise it (react it with something) to make it harmless. The only things you've got coming down the exhaust pipe are already oxidised, or unburned fuel. So the normal way to deal with NOx is either to pump more fuel through, thereby reducing the economy, or on bigger diesels to spray urea into the exhaust, meaning you've got another consumable to deal with.

This reminds me of an experience I had in San Francisco years ago. My buddy was commissioned to paint a mural on the side of a building for a Harry Potter style children's book that was set to be released. He asked me if I wanted to help him paint, so we drove up there and got to work on the project. He uses spray paint as a medium for most of his stuff, and while I was helping him fill a few spots in, this baby boomer aged liberal walked up and started berating us for destroying the environment with toxic chemicals and he was going to call the cops to have us arrested for spray painting the side of a building. Ten minutes later, the cops roll up on bikes and say "hey guys, we got a call about some kids vandalising the side of a building. Nevermind it, carry on with your painting, it's looking pretty cool." The frustrated little cunt comes walking back over after the cops leave and starts shouting various profanities at us while shaking his fist. I told him to have a nice day. He scurried over to his BMW M3, got in it and sped away.

While I must sadly agree, I will also assert that we, the non-brown shirts, will have plenty of what is required to resist their tyranny.

It starts with testosterone and goes from there.

if you have low T, start googling.

No need for roids or pills. Just a change in diet and lifestyle.

Chicks dig testosterone, that's why fags and lesbians hate manly men and make it damn near impossible for a man to get testosterone. But if a man wants to cut off his dick and take some estrogen, why the med industry will be right there helping every step of the way.

Why do they hate us?

Because they are incapable of action and fear those who are.

Men will be needed to restore order once the feminists/gays/libs lose their grip on power. The only thing propping up these milquetoasts is their government. It steps aside, and order gets restored.

Bank on it.

Dear Asshat, You probably own a Leaf, which means you're slower than most in the brain department so let me lay it out for you: That "Zero Emission" badge is complete bullshit. Every time you plug that piece of shit in, you suck energy from the grid.  That energy is generated by power plants across the country.  Some are nuclear, some are hydro, some are natural gas, but most are oil and coal powered.  And at the end of the day, all of them have emissions (or waste products) and most of them are WAY worse than anything that might dribble out of any car's tailpipe. And for the record, most power generating facilities are located in or near poor neighborhoods. And to make matters worse, poor people can typically live without buying gasoline.  They walk or ride bikes or take the bus.  But they can't live without electricity to power their air conditioning, heating, refridgeration...etc.  And now, thanks to you and all your electric car cult members, the demand for electricity will increase, which will drive the price up for everyone. Which will - of course hurt poor people the worst. So in effect, you and the rest of the "guilt-trippers" are going to make it harder for poor people to breathe, eat, stay warm, stay cool, stay clean, and in general - stay healthy. You're killing poor people - by the dozens - slowly and painfully. And you're too stupid to realize it. Which is so perfect it scares me.

This is no different than the government looking the other way for years while mortgage companies were loaning on fictional values, and then suddenly the light comes on that this is all wrong, and then just as suddenly they discover that this sudden bout of truthiness is killing the housing industry, they revert back to the mean. Meanwhile lots of banks are shut and sucked up by "more friendly" banks at discount prices and guaranteed base valuations...all becoming too big to fail. Watch as VW is beat soundly about the ears and then when it is discovered that it is killing Germany's economy, they will come back with some new bailout that suddenly enriches the same old donors again. Meanwhile VW become another step closer to be a nationalized company...for the good of the people of course. Corporations can't be trusted like "elected officials" and those sacrificing their lives to public service in government.

And why does Russia need all these foreign partners, anyhow? China? Germany? Various puppet regimes on the border?

Thanks to the evil jewish-bolsheviks who industrialized and educated Russia, who built an army strong enough to stand off the Wehrmacht (with a little help from its friends), and gave it a primo space program and serious nuclear capability, one has to wonder what has changed since they've been kicked into the ash heap of history.

Why does Russia need external expertise now, when it used to be able to stand on its own?

they did not industralize russia!

in fact they killed 20-30 million of the population before stalins death +they killed 7-9million ukrainians + 4million muslims

the idea of communism was to create slavery and force people to work for FREE and let them work MORE

you talk about education, but education in russia (except of physics and math) was "censored"

people had to marry and work for 20 years to receive a car - in comparison to the west, there was no industrialization

alcohol was used as a drug for masses, whole population was put on alcohol

in soviet union people became retard, because stupid, unsuccessful man married stupid, unsuccessful woman and had up to 6 stupid children on average

there was a deficit on everything - bribes and corruption bacame a tradition

so why are you lying tarabel? why do you want to present murderes as heros?  are you a pro-massmurder and pro-criminal yourself?

Calm yourself, Senor NNNNNNNN.

First off, yes they did industrialize Russia. Sorry but those are the facts. Those Germans who campaigned in Russia both in 1917 and 1941 were utterly amazed at the transformation. So far as military production went, the USSR produced more than Nazi Germany, often by a large margin. Post-USSR, the country has largely rust-belted itself into manufacturing oblivion except for a small segment of State-sponsored military enterprises.

Second, yes, they murdered a lot of their own people in the process of industrialization and collectivization and general opposition-crushing, and kept on going.

Third, yes, they taught everyone to read and write-- the better to swallow their propaganda -- but it is nevertheless the truth. Lots of polytechnic graduates who were taught to be educated scientific and industrial functionaries. When I was young, I was told that this was a drawback to their educational system since it didn't create people who were able to independently reason. Now that I've seen the same system working on US college students, I see that they are also not taught to independently reason-- with the additional drawback that they have no useful skills to contribute either.  Even worse than the Bolsheviks and brought to us by the same ideological soulmates.

The soul-crushing aspects of the system are well understood by myself as well as you, but you have to understand that I am speaking with a Russian who blames the Jewish-Bolshevik Communists for being a plague on the country (which they were) but would like to take credit for the legacy items bequeathed to Russia afterwards, such as its nuclear might and space program, as if the Bolshies had nothing to do with these things.

You cannot separate the good from the bad. Life under the Czars was no bowl of cherries either. The Bolsheviks changed things and could have been of great benefit to the country if they evolved into a softer Swedish-style tyranny and not maintained the pointless state of siege and bankrupted it in an attempt to rival the United States.

For one of the best of all portraits of late-Soviet life, I refer you to P J O' Rourke's hysterical essay "Ship of Fools" about a river cruise up the Volga in company with a bunch of loony leftists sponsored by "The Nation" magazine. I think that is found in "Holidays in Hell" but may have come from "Republican Party Reptile" which features a picture of Eisenhower wearing a Mohawk on the cover. For the end of the communist dream, nothing beats the various "Return of the Death of Communism" series of essays that comprise the first part of "Give War A Chance."

Anyhow, check out PJ, no matter what you think of me. Prepare to laugh yourself to tears.

Glad to see that you got the batteries replaced in your synthetic outrage module. It's working perfectly now.

Am I a Jew? Surprise, no.

Have I lived and worked with Jews at various times in life? Sure.

Here is the bottom line about them all:

They work hard, save their money, and take care of their own-- always.

They do not feel beholden to others and why should they?

You certainly do not feel beholden to them, so what do they owe you in return?

Why should they have to be nice to you when you do not feel obligated to be nice to them?

You go your way and they go theirs. Seems fair to me. Invisible hand. Law of the Jungle. Way of the World. You name it. You just don't like playing on the losing team.

But what burns in your breast the most is the idea that they have tricked you and robbed you in some way and now have brainwashed your fellow whiteys into being guilt-ridden idiots that further the secret Israeli plan to enslave you.

Seems like you should have some small degree of admiration for a group of people so hated and yet so clever as to foist off this great scheme on people who dislike them so much. They sound like smart people bound by centuries of tradition (which they have not abandoned) that has served them well.

Your beef should not be with the Jews but with the white people you champion who have abandoned their own traditions in favor of some chimerical bullshit that has left them as intellectually defenseless targets for techniques of elementary manipulation. But then that is the way of the world, indeed. The smart and the clever take advantage of the stupid. Never gonna change.

Seriously, check out P J O' Rourke. You are smart enough to appreciate his brand of humor if you are willing to give it a shot. Give War A Chance, baby.
