Joke aside, it looks like most 'Muricans are not just contradicting each others on the topic, but also have problems to grasp that Democracy and Republic are synonyms, although don't have identical meanings.
Republic is used to officially describe a country's political system and its Latin translation means nothing more than "public domain" (Monarchy is the other prevalent form present today, see also Oligarchy), while Democracy as a term is used in a more colloquial sense (its antonym is Autocracy, though also Plutocracy, Tyranny, Despotism belong to the same family).
One has to consider that what Ben had on his mind while uttering his immortal sentence to the curious maid, is that it takes constant vigilance of those that constitute and have the rights to decide on all matters concerning "the public domain". For otherwise it's easy to lose your Republic if you allow foreign entities to: 1. unconstitutionally creep in into Govt. and 2. de facto transforming your Republic into an Oligarchy/Plutarchy by a soft coup behind the scenes...

There's also the matter of governing documents. In a pure democracy, all political power (sovereignty) is vested in the majority. A republic typically has a governing document. Our governing document enumerates some rights, this depriving even a super majority of some of their sovereignty to protect the public.
The real question of democracy vs republic is "What is it that the populist majority wants, that they don't already have?" Or, more bluntly stated: "Why can't they use the extant political processes to deprive citizens of their rights?"

Hit the nail on the head there. <sarcoff> A better question would be 'in which way does the sovereignty constituent prevent concentration of power in the hands of a few that leads to loss of individual rights & freedoms in a Republic versus Democracy?' The answer is the same for both Republics and Democracies (gasp, they're one and the same) - separation of powers and rule of law under the watchful eye of a vigilant citizenry, because power corrupts and has a tendency to be concentrated.

Look - I know it hurts to have our cherished myths crushed, but the American revolution wasn't so much about "liberty" as a bunch of rich Protestants who didn't want to pay their taxes - taxes largely about paying for the costs of the French and Indian wars - which were to "protect" the colonies {from the indigenous people}.
What really happened is the British tactics slowly won over more of the average American - but support for actual independence and revolution was *never*more than half {although around 20% only were hardcore loyalists - lots of fence-sitters}

The Revolutionary War was every bit as much of a civil war as, well the Civil War. If anything, there was a better chance for brother to be pitted against brother, because unlike the actual Civil War, your side in the conflict didn't depend on what part of the country you lived in. With the Loyalist and Patriot factions, a single street was fully equipped to have a civil war all its own.
It was like WWE's Royal Rumble, except with less genital outlines on the outfits.
In fact, there were not two but three sides: about a third of Americans fought for independence, another third opted for the king's side, and the remaining third didn't give a rat's ass as long as they survived with all appendages intact. Although recent research has revised the figures slightly in favor of the Patriots, that still leaves them in the minority. Yes, Patriots were a minority in America.
Incidentally, these power dynamics also tear down the traditional "Americans were the good guys, save for a few rotten apples" view of the Patriot/Loyalist relationship. I was born and an living in russia and want to say that putin is a fucking thug with no appreciation for anything or anybody besides his gang clan. He might sing nice, but if your judge him by his actions you will find an evil and ignorant kgb officer.
There is no law or justice in the contry. Anyone can easily loose freedom or property if it's in the interest of certain groups. That is the main reason why after 15 years of putin's rein and a long period of very favorable comodity prices the country failed to create any form or high tech industry and why it struggles that badly in the current comodity downturn.
