Caught On Tape: Dramatic Footage Of Russia's First Airstrikes In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

As we reported earlier this morning, at the “request” (whatever that means in the context of Russian politics) of Vladimir Putin, Russian lawmakers have approved airstrikes in Syria and unlike the rather deliberate pace of Washington’s efforts to rout ISIS, Moscow doesn’t appear to be wasting any time.

As CNN reports, Russia has conducted its first strikes near Homs after effectively warning the US to stay out of the sky.

Russia has conducted its first airstrike in Syria, near the city of Homs, a senior U.S. official told CNN on Wednesday .

The Russians told the United States that it should not fly U.S. warplanes in Syria, but gave no geographical information about where Russia planned to strike. The senior official said U.S. missions are continuing as normal.

Yes, the “US missions are continuing as normal”, which means no one is doing much of anything and some CIA-trained proxy fighters are being pick-up-truck-jacked somewhere by al-Qaeda.

In any event, here are the visuals which purport to show Russia’s first strikes on anti-regime targets:

And a few still shots:

*  *  *

As a side note, Homs is not generally identified as being an ISIS stronghold, although the group did reportedly seize Al-Qaryatain in August:

And the Pentagon is already out trying to stir up the controversy (again via CNN):

But a senior U.S. administration official told CNN's Elise Labott the Russian airstrike near the city of Homs "has no strategic purpose" in terms of combating ISIS, which "shows they are not there to go after ISIL." ISIL is another acronym for ISIS.

Iran's policy a failure? Not so...

Iran has been providing big time logistical support to Assad for a while now, and Hezbullah, their allies, saved Assad's ass two or three years ago when he was on the ropes. Remember when everyone expected Assad to fold within weeks back then? It was a constant drumbeat from the MSM and State Department.

Exactamundo. to the MIC, an airstrike that uses up a half a dozen JDAMs is a success. Where the JDAMs land is irrelevant to the bottom line, except if they actually miss, so much the better because they get up use up six more trying again (rinse and repeat).

Too bad. That opportunity is gone forever and Russia (and China) can see the naked perfidity of the Zionist Nazis who through the 9/11 coup have now taken over the West.

The Russians and Chinese are onto the Zionist end-game.

Putin has told the US to get its aircraft the fuck out of Dodge to ensure they do not continue their precise bombing of precisly the wrong targets.

Truth of the matter is, the REAL airstrikes have been going on all along by the Syrian Arab Airforce. Since the Russian advisors have started working with them, providing satellite images and training / equipping of better armaments on planes has taken place - ALL Islamist factions have seen devastating airstrikes.

I see no mention here of the many sorties the SAAF did a few days ago on, as Zerohedge calls it, the "defacto capital of ISIS Ar-Raqqa." The SAAF blew the AIDS out of a training camp / marshalling area. This runs counter to the conspiracy theory that Assad either helped create or turns a blind eye to ISIS to focus on killing "moderate" rebels, women and children.

Seems to me the *real* test of the effectiveness of these strikes is whether or not the Russians have on the ground observers who are calling in the airstrikes. If they are using forward observers (and they have the Syrian, Iranian, Hezbullah, and their own Spetznaz resources that could do this), calling in precision strikes on high value targets using GLOSNAS or laser targetting rather than just striking buildings and infrastructure, the effectiveness of the airstrikes will mount up quickly. There are only so many really well trained Xe/SA/Mossad/SAS mercenaries after all...

Yep, mainly because the country that spends $200 billion actually wants to take the fight to the enemy and destroy them.  Not keep them limping along until 'regime change' comes about.  Adding yet another layer of fun, who would run the new regime?  Those four or five moderates or the ISIS victors?  Wouldn't a legitimate (if not popular with the west) secular Assad regime be a better outcome than another Iraq?  Gosh, not that Sadam is gone Iraq sure is enjoying their freedom!

Neither Putin, Obama or (insert any other world leader's name here) gives a flying hoozah about these people.

With the barbarains hammering on the gates of Damascus and taking possession of all the Syrian oilfields, only two options remained:

To let Assad fall when he ran out of money to pay his troops even if they didn't crumble away before then.

To go full Vietnam on the situation and pour in money, troops, and air power to save his puppet and his naval base.

But this was his last option and one that he is not nearly as happy about as some of the people around here seem to think. Russian money will have to be used to pay the Syrian army and bureaucracy from this point forward. Russian money will have to feed the Syrian population. Russian money has to buy the bombs, rockets, bullet and gas to prosecute the war. The goal of the opposition, no matter who pulls their chain, has now shifted from sleeping in Assad's bed to producing Russian body bags.

Even the United States endured severe budgetary stress from its adventures in Fanbelt Land. Putin has a much shorter financial tail to play this sort of game, far fewer military assets to grind down in desert operations, and a home population that will be equally unsupportive of casualties, which he will try to hide to the best of his ability in order to lengthen the time he has to achieve his personal objectives.

Yes, and so is the U.S., but we didn't do it.  Just like we could identify and destroy command & control centers, training camps, and ANY troop movements across the open desert, which is most of Syria and Iraq, but we didn't do that, either.  Just like we could identify and shut down the flow of funds that support an army, and go after the source of money, but we didn't do that, either.  Just like we could shut down the access into and out of the oil fields that ISIS now controls, but we didn't do it.  Just like we could monitor the oil that was sold, the ships it was loaded onto, and the countries receiving the shipments, but we didn't do it.

Putin knows all of this, of course, and more.

For instance, we could use satellite imagery prove with pinpoint accuracy the source of fire that brought down Flt MH17 over Ukraine last year, but we have not released the data.  Nor have we released the Black Box info.  Why do you suppose that is?  We don't want to make the Russians look bad?  Sure.

Yes, there are a lot of things that could be done.....and Russia just started doing them.

In the event you actually get them to do something without the threat of violence, they shift into stupid mode, and act like they don't understand English. They casually drag their feet, point fingers at other people, then feign an injury, rather than just do what was asked of them.

Now this behavior is usually reserved for adolescents, and is certainly not acceptable coming from the worlds largest military force.

At the very least we can now say Putin HAS fired a shot in the ME.  Forget the magnitude for now (it is rather small but perhaps percise) the firing of a shot by Russia is a huge change in tactics for them.

As you mention, troop movements by the insurgents from city to city CAN (if Russia choses to persist) now become very difficult and exposed in ways not experienced by them before.  I did not go to a map to see the location of these strikes, if Russia starts striking in the north closer to Israel and Turkey then that too will set the stage for the new battle.

Syria with air support could push insurgents out of a town and into the open.  There they can be hit from the air and just as important is if Putin actually supports the Syrian army and shields it from strikes from the west (including drones and missiles).

BUT, also interesting is the article posted on ZH and on RT about 15 large blasts in a city in China at the same time.

http://www.rt.com/news/317030-china-massive-blasts-liuzhou/

You have to think it is all connected.  And if it is connected then someone is more worried about China getting involved than about Russia.  A little message to go along with the other recent blasts in China to stay home.  For China to join in and launch strikes in the ME or make a commitment to protect China's investments would be even bigger than these few strikes by Russia.  Together it would be a massive shift in the dynamics.  But that is a big IF.

Although the strikes are limited and small for now they provide hope.  And hats off to Putin for finally firing a shot.  Now, Putin saddle up and follow through with conviction.

Typed while thinking of where the western air strikes against Syria concentrated are, to the north.

Yes, blew that one no doubt.  Lets say if Putin makes air strikes in the north where Israel, Turkey, the US, France have taken control then it will show some resolve.

And, no one can give a realistic reason why Putin would not deliver the S-300/S-2500 to Syria if he truely support Assad.  That would completely change the game, but he refuses to do so.

France can't take control of a roll of toilet paper.  They have let wide swaths of their country become a sewer.

They flew a bombing raid to allegedly take out a training camp where they believed some French citizens were training.  Good on them for that, but they are trying desperately to remain relevant.  They even had to do this raid with assistance from U.S. jets.

The next few days will be very interesting, as Russia takes control of Syrian air space.  There are no legal justifications I am aware of that says it is OK to violate another country's air space without permission.  Putin gave the Defense Department 1 hour notice this morning that they were about to begin bombing missions and to stay out.

At least 27 civilians have been killed in alleged Russian airstrike in the Syrian province of Homs Wednesday, local media and civilians reported. The airstrike comes after the Russian parliament's upper house on Wednesday gave President Vladimir Putin formal permission to carry out air strikes in Syria, the Kremlin chief of staff said.

Look further up the thread and you will see the support he offers for his position.

Since this is a thread about Russian airstrikes in Syria, albeit frequently sandwiched in between all the allusions to homosexual behavior, why is he trolling?

Why aren't you wailing about the people who fill the thread with shouted admonitions that people go do various strange things to themselves?

Those are the ones that don't seem to add any value to the discussion, at least not for me.

I looked up thread and I didn't find a comment from him or anyone else with credible verification on civilian casualties.  There will be some eventually no doubt but I would hazard a guess it will be far less than the catastrophic number from the Iraq conflict.

Aha. Now it's "credible" verification and not just listing the sources for his opinion. This is a war and the idea of a bunch of disinterested documentarians scurrying around in country to report the truth is a laughable one, at best. People pick a side and grind out imagery and commentary to support the side they are rooting for. It appears that you and him do not root for the same side.

Just as a general rule, what is your guess of the likelihood of any airstrike by anyone producing some degree of collateral civilian damage in any single action?

Wed, 09/30/2015 - 11:09 | 6611141 Ms No
Ms No's picture

I have not only not seen credible sources verifying civilian casualities as of yet I haven't seen any sources on civilian casualties at all.

As far as your question about the liklihood of an airstrike causing some degree of civilian casualties... like I said there will be civilian casualties at some point.  I think Putin will have a far lower civilian death toll than we tend to have on average and I am not suggesting this because I believe he is a saint, he is ex KGB so that is hardly the case, but rather because he is not stupid and may actually take actions to avoid civilian casualties.

Your right that I am hoping for ISIS to get throttled because I am tired of them being a justification to topple countries and subsequently cause massive amounts of civilian casualties and keep the world in a constant state of war.

I have to go to work, later Bitchez.

Do we even have credible sources verifying that this was indeed a Russian air strike in the first place?

Because it seems rather strange that Russians would play straight into the Empire's propaganda by conducting their first mission against a non-ISIS target in a populated area.

Wed, 09/30/2015 - 11:11 | 6611148 11b40
11b40's picture

What is your point?  Any military actions in populated areas is bound to create collateral damage unless miracles happen.

The U.S. even had designated free fire zones, where anyone moving there was considered to be the enemy.  Now, every time I see any of the talking heads discussing Syria, there is some nitwit jumping up & down about barrel bombs.....like 2000 pound bombs that fall from invisible bombers high above are so much nicer.  Or maybe instead they should use napalm & white phosphorus like we so freely did in Viet Nam.  Just set 'em on fire instead of blowing them to bits.

As for rooting for one side or the other, which "side" do you root for, and why?  I root for staying the hell out of other people's wars - ESPECIALLY civil wars.  I root for NOT destabilizing entire regions of the world and causing mass suffering on a biblical scale.  I root for honesty in our actions and working for the benefit of America, not being lead around the ME like a bull with a ring in it's nose by some very special interest groups

Have a nice day.

Thank you.

I grew up in a military family, with 3 posts to Europe in the 50's & 60's, then served a tour myself.  My experiences in Viet Nam caused me to become skeptical of U.S. foreign policy, and to pay close attention to our government's actions over the past 45 years.

Things used to be different here, but the country i love is rotting before my eyes.  It sickens me, and fills me with rage and disgust, but I still operate under the banner of "America, right or wrong.  When right, to be kept right.  When wrong, to be made right."

I leave you with a quote from one of your fellow Europeans of long ago:

“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

Alexis de Tocqueville quotes (French Historian and Political scientist. 1805-1859)

There is absolutely no proof from the above that Russia jets bombed anything. So why state it as a fact. Could easily have been US, Australian, NATO, Israel, Turkey or Saudies jets. Hell it could have been multiple explosions from bombs placed there by individuals. As the Syrian police and an ambulance are on the scene and there are no weapons that people are holding so it doesn't look like a terrorist strong hold but civilians which the Syrian and Russia air forces would not bomb. Seems the west is at it again. Poor reporting by ZH. The headline "Caught on tape" is more crap like the MSM pushes.
