Those who frequent these pages are well aware of what’s happened to Washington’s strategy in Syria over the past several weeks. Russia’s dramatic move to enter the fray has left the US trapped, as the West attempts to hang on to a narrative that’s no longer convincing even to a largely ignorant public.
Now, the only thing left to do is either stand down and let Moscow do as it pleases in support of the Assad regime, or else get on board and acquiesce to the inevitable.
Or, summed up in simpler terms...

I think the take away in all of this - especially for all the junior officers and other PhD arm chair neocon generals is that you will never "win" a war if you don't hold the ground.

Look at that list of high-tech air operations. You might now a lot but for frack-sake you don't control the ground - you don't control anything.

This start-spangled failure in American remote warfare will lead to a strategic arms race of land-based drones - able to hold the ground indefinitely - making entire regions no-man's lands.
You will see systems be deployed that loiter for weeks. Wake up on IR movement. Operate all weather. and have near 100% kill ratios. Add a pinch of "swarm" and entire villages, towns and cities will taken off the map.

The Airforce has a huge vested interest in playing up the effectiveness of air ops. You need the budget to keep all those stars in jobs and get more.
Sheer bombing has never been proven as effective for anything beyond a tactical support for ground ops. Except may be you are looking at a nuke first strike (and that is still a hypothetical scenario).
Putin's committed forces even if they are equalized are still in the even south of Syria and aren't going to move the needle. They'll just keep Assad in the game and at the table which is the point. Trade up on him if necessary for more important things including on Ukraine, Central Asia, and financial matters at homee that shitty since some of the sanctions have been imposed.
I think you'll find Russia doesn't trade away allies. That's a US practice (due in at least part to the wild swings in policy you get moving between Republican and Democrat administrations).

The additional benefits to Russia and China are a permanent rail link to the new silk road from the Russian port of Tarsus. The land link for China and Russia into the Mediterranean will mean a massive amount of trade to Europe from China.
