Russia Is Destabilizing Syria… According To The People Currently Destabilizing Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

By Don Shay of Antimedia

Russia is destabilizing Syria — according to those destabilizing Syria.

In a move many consider to be an act of bitter defiance to the West, the Russian government appears to have significantly increased its military aid to the Syrian regime. This support hinges largely on the provision of providing advanced weaponry — such as tanks and artillery — training Syrian soldiers to use those weapons systems, and Russian-led airstrikesagainst ISIS. Unsurprisingly, Western media pundits and officials (and their devoted followers) are expressing renewed outrage over Russia’s involvement in the Syrian conflict — at the same time, excluding pertinent background information on Russia’s historical roots in the region.

Russia’s support for Syria dates back to 1946, when Russia helped consolidate Syria’s independence. The two countries mutually came to a diplomatic and military agreement in the form of a non-aggression pact, which was enacted on April 20, 1950. In this pact, Russia promised support to the newly-created Syria by helping to develop its military and by providing tactical support. Essentially, Russia and Syria have been cooperating for decades both militarily and economically, with Russia maintaining a naval base on the Syrian Mediterranean.

Regardless of history, it matters little if global consensus opinion supports Russia. The reality is that the war in Syria has no positive outcomes for the people living there. If Assad is removed from power, it is likely the country will fall completely into the hands of ISIS and other terror groups — much like what occurred in Libya and Iraq. The United States’ prospects in the region seem dismal to anyone with a track record of our earlier interventions. If the U.S. placed more emphasis on diplomacy and less emphasis on arming belligerents, however, a political solution to the Syrian conflict would be much more of a possibility.

A primary criticism of Russia’s relationship with Syria is that arming Assad is an attempt to prolong the conflict and destroy the nation. U.S. pundits point fingers at Russia as if its allegiance with Syria is a new development without understanding the historical intricacies of the Russian-Syrian relationship. In contrast, many individuals complaining about Russia’s role in “destabilizing Syria” and “prolonging the conflict” do not apply the same scrutiny to the United States’ new-found interest in the country.

It is no secret the United States has armed, trained, and financed the Syrian rebels for nearly the entire duration of the conflict. Does this implicate the United States in prolonging the conflict? U.S.-backed fighters have consistently defected to ISIS and Al-Qaeda, transferring their battle experience and weaponry to virulent terrorist groups. When Al-Qaeda violently occupies villages and towns and ISIS fighters send scores of refugees fleeing for their lives, should the U.S. policy that caused such a catastrophe be questioned?

Critics concerned by what Russia is accused of doing — destabilizing Syria and prolonging the conflict— should be equally opposed to U.S. intervention in that country. U.S. intervention in Syria, much like U.S. intervention elsewhere, has culminated in unprecedented destabilization and blowback. However, most people — as George Orwell understood — have a lopsided view of history, as they ignore and almost refuse to come to terms with the atrocities their own state commits, and by that logic, ignore the detrimental role the United States has played in Syria.

The tragedy of the current crisis in Syria is not that hundreds of thousands of people have died or that millions more have become refugees. What makes the death and suffering of so many Syrians tragic is that their pain and grief achieved nothing. It seems there will be no silver lining around the bottomless and ever-expanding pit of war and death in Syria.

One of the best solutions for a peaceful Syria hinges on the United States completely withdrawing from the region and the U.N. strengthening, instead of impeding, democratic movements that usher in a peaceful transition from chaos to stability. Calling for U.S. intervention in this region is simply perpetuating decades-old Russian-American animosity expressed through what could be considered a proxy war between terrorists on both sides of the political spectrum in Syria. This will only hurt innocent civilians by causing death and destruction — and by extension, promoting continued massive movements of refugees.

Bullshit.. They do not care.

When Bush was president I saw "No Iraq War" signs in house windows and as stickers on car.
There is nothing anywhere now.
The American left is completely devoid of honour and are the world's biggest hypocrites.
They only care about wars when these wars are waged by republicans.
Same goes for the press.
Current press narrative is that Russian involvement there is bad.
There is zero examination of the fact as to who destabilized Syria to begin with.
If a republican gets elected president watch the press flip their narrative a 180 degrees.
They will put a microscope on any action by the US government and be hypercritical of it.

If you looked you would see that democracy died in America a long time ago. Now what exists is a two party system where both parties are controlled by the same people, who also control the media and own most of the assets, The best proof is the government has so completely  failed to improve the standard of living in America that since 2008 10 million Americans have slipped under the poverty line. In Russia the government has over the same period dramatically improved the standard of living. Russian style democracy looks like an improvement on what is happening now in America.

A slightly different take - the best proof is that the government took actions that reduced the standard of living in America since 2008.

Perhaps they should prefer trying the Russian brand of democracy, because if you omit all those Western lies and look at the hard statistics, you would find out that: Under Putin poverty has gone down, crime has gone down, corruption has gone down, alcoholism and drugs use have gone down, incomes have gone up. When Putin came to power, 29% of the population were living below the poverty line. In 2013, this had dropped to 11%. Meanwhile in the democratic USA, since 2000 the number of Americans living in poverty has increased every year.

There is still a huge amount of work to do in Russia, but unless something bad happens, Russia is on the right path. On a better path than both China or USA.

The lies of Washington, (disseminated via the msm), have been child like and transparent for the last 25 + years. Nothing that is propagated through mainstream channels holds up under scrutiny. With the advent of the internet, information is readily available..at your fingertips. The task of separating lies from truth is not easy, but takes time and an objective mind set. The majority of people in this country are intellectually lazy, their critical thinking being atrophied. That is their fault directly, not the msm, not the jews, not the socialists. The blame rests squarely upon the population.

Fri, 10/02/2015 - 03:37 | 6619533 Victor999
Victor999's picture

Perhaps, but the blame does not lie squarely on their shoulders - there has been a multi-generational programme of behavioural manipulation directed at the US population (and other Western countries) that has conditioned them to become unthinking and obedient consumers.  These propaganda efforts are highly professional and extremely effective at manipulation of the masses.  Edward Bernays, one of the Tribe, was its father.

And I'm nobody. a dot in the herd. A drop out, a loser.

Stop blaming the jews for the shortcomings of our society. If you could not see the manipulation, then you're a fish, a sucker, you bought it hook, line and sinker.

The blame squarely on a population who have been indoctrinated from birth and (until the advent of the Internet) whose means of finding out about the World were under the tight control of the oligarchy?

I think not.

Using the "everyman defense", people are acting as their peers would act. Fortunately, people are (slowly) starting to awake from their slumber - its is not easy to realize that the paradigm you have been living under is a complete sham, and the cognitive disonance defenses of the human mind will throw up a spirited defense.

I'd say that ten or twelve years ago I was deep in the thrall of the controlled narrative as well. It was only slowly that I started to see the contradictions of 9/11 and the other nefarious deed of the US powers that be and started to question the narrative.

I've been indoctrinated as much as anyone else, but if you can't see the lies that are right in front of your face that exist in advertising, foreign policy, politics etc., you are brain dead. Or you're in denial. Because they are so blatant. Acting as your peers act, i.e herd mentality is no excuse.

Washington is really enraged that their pet terrorist are getting really hammered by Russia. It has been said that Russian air attacks did more real damage to ISIS in one day, than the past year of US pin prick fake raids has done.

Obama says it will take years to defeat ISIS. Why so long? Because the USA is keeping ISIS alive and well in hopes ISIS can defeat Assad. So just like Libya, getting rid of the ruler is all the US wants. No matter who they use to do it, they don't care.

It also now appears for sure that Al-Qaeda is a wholly CIA owned terror group, Because yesterday Russia hammered the fuck out of Al-Qaeda base and weapons store, this has sent Washington into a fury of rage and media tantrums! Washington even admits, that the Russians are attacking CIA trained and managed Terrorists!

I suspect Putin decided the first heavy attacks would be made on just Washingtons terror groups, to show Obama that his pet terrorist are fair game to Syrian and Russian forces.

UK media is having a fit of rage too, that Western Terrorist allies are being bombed by evil Putin.

CNN itself is desperate that US friendly terrorists are being killed by evil foul Russian attacks.

Ladies and gentlemen, one more issue that shall affect the future of the entire humankind is climate change. It is in our interest to ensure that the coming UN Climate Change Conference that will take place in Paris in December this year should deliver some feasible results. As part of our national contribution, we plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions to 70–75 percent of the 1990 levels by the year 2030.

However, I suggest that we take a broader look at the issue. Admittedly, we may be able to defuse it for a while by introducing emission quotas and using other tactical measures, but we certainly will not solve it for good that way. What we need is an essentially different approach, one that would involve introducing new, groundbreaking, nature-like technologies that would not damage the environment, but rather work in harmony with it, enabling us to restore the balance between the biosphere and technology upset by human activities.

It is indeed a challenge of global proportions. And I am confident that humanity does have the necessary intellectual capacity to respond to it. We need to join our efforts, primarily engaging countries that possess strong research and development capabilities, and have made significant advances in fundamental research. We propose convening a special forum under the auspices of the UN to comprehensively address issues related to the depletion of natural resources, habitat destruction, and climate change. Russia is willing to co-sponsor such a forum.

the hypocrisy is thick with this one.

what the US did/is doing in syria is the same thing USSR did in south ossetia and azkhazia in 2008.  the only difference is the USSR did it with an overt invasion, that lasted only two months, while the US took the covert approach that has lasted years.

then they blocked construction of the nabucco pipeline.  here they are blocking, via their client state syria, the qatar/turkey pipeline.  which means, if you are going to compete with gazprom you better bring a superpower because that will bring out the red army.

It's not the same thing at all. Saakashvilli ordered his troops to fire on Russian peace-keepers, then Putin sent the boys in to hand him (Sack-of-shitti) his ass on a plate.  Sack-of-Shitti thought his big bully boy U.S. mates would come along to help him....but they chickened it!

Indeed. The Georgian Army was all decked out in brand new US Military gear, humvees, TOWs, camo, and even had experience in Afghanistan alongside US troops. They even had Hollywood produced feature films extolling the virtues of Mother Georgia and the gypsy king and fraud CIA asset Saakashvili (which they have refurbished and now deployed in Ukraine).

The Russians mobilized a relatively rag-tag mob (the YouTube videos of the event show Donbass style irregular forces from Russia using whatever old weapons they could get their hands on rather than well equiped and kitted army - they were certainly not Russia' first line troops).

The Russians made short work of the Georgians none-the-less in a few days...

Russia (not the USSR - what centyury are you living in) never 'invaded Georgia.  They took military action against Georgian agression in South Ossetia and promptly left the country after they taught Saakashvili a lesson, resulting in his eating his tie.  South Ossetia and Abkhazia are to the north of Georgia, well out of the way of the proposed Nabucco Pipeline.  Your sense of history is shit.

Everybody knows that Western Destabilization is world class while Russian Destabilization... well, I don't have to tell you.

This debate is similar to Tweedle Dum Poroshenko comparing the rebels in Eastern Ukraine to terrorists.

But the rebels in Syria have branded themselves the Holy Archangels of Jesus and Mohammad Kin of God and don't tell the New York Times or the Washington Post you think they too are terrorists.

You'll get one of their self righteous propaganda fake turds in your next  Starbuck's latte.

The author gets his facts badly wrong if he thinks Russian support for Syria extends back only as far as the 1940s. A hundred years or so earlier than that the Russians went to war in Crimea over what was then the Holy Land, to protect the Christians there.

What a joke Australia has become! Everytime it rains in Washington, the umbrellas go up in Canberra. We`re like the little fella who goes around the school playground accompanied by the school bully and punches people on the nose without fear of recrimination.

Russia's Australian embassy has rejected accusations the Kremlin's military actions in Syria have pinpointed targets other than Islamic State (IS).

It has also broadly responded to Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan, who said Russia's motives were "not trustworthy" in Syria.

"We want the broadest possible coalition to destroy ISIL [IS] and if Russia were going to participate in that in a constructive way, then that would be a good thing," Mr Keenan told the ABC this morning.

"The problem is their motives are just not trustworthy, and the strikes that ... we saw over the past 24 hours have not been targeted against ISIL positions."

Agreed, but at least the UK has a defense force to reckon with. As soon as the USA moves their troops out of Darwin because they can`t afford it anymore, we`re going to look pretty fuckin stupid. Talk about shitting on your own doorstep with regards to Indonesia!

We had a very elequent and respectful chinese ambassador over here recently addressing the business community. Not only did he speak fluent english (unlike abbott, julie bishop or turnbull) but he gently and intelligently put forward China`s hope that we should concentrate on the interests and views that we hold in common rather than accentuate our differences!

What ever happened to diplomacy, imagine, a country of 23 million dependant on China for trade, no defense force to speak of us pointing the finger and insulting not only China and Indonesia, but also Russia for crying out loud!!

Foreign policy over here is just arrogant and stupid, Bishop and the likes are going to get Australia into serious trouble in the future!

The seeds of a civil war in Europe have been planted and are growing.  The Chief of Police for all of Germany came out in August of this year and stated there were no go zones where the law had no effect.  If Syria is further destabilized (and it will be) then the outflows from there and Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and others will also increase.  The violence in Europe is alreay beginning.  What a mess.

Look at Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Ukriane for America's vision of democracy through regime change. A wonderful example of death and anarchy. Civilians (women and children included) have been dying by the hundreds of thousands in Syria for years while the US continued to support the proxy armies that contributed to the instability.

U.S. foreign policy in general is in a pathetic state, but particularly in the MENA area, it's simply abysmal and has been for quite some time.  I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I would live to see the day when Iran and Iraq were cooperating in a military endeavor.  The U.S. can be proud of the fact that after sinking billions upon billions of dollars, to say nothing of the lives that were lost, into a country for the last 13 years and now see it cooperating with the country that is supposed to be our sworn enemy.

I also never thought I would live to see the day when the U.S. was complaining about Russian attacks on moderates in Syria, only to learn that those moderates were members of al Qaeda, another supposed sworn enemy.

I also never thought I would live to see the day that Russia and China were not only cooperating, but openly cooperating with each other.

Finally, I never thought I would live to see the day when the U.S. funded the overthrow of a democratically electedgovernment in Ukraine and replaced them with openly avowed Nazis.

President Obama has truly changed the face of the world in his almost 7 years in office.  I'm honestly not sure the world or this country is going to make through his eight year term.
