This is part of the US hybrid war against  Russia and China.  VW is the largest car manufacturer in the world, has just built a large plant in Russia to make engines.  3000 VWs were made into toast from the Tianjin detonation.

The onboard computers in VWs can adjust emission flow -- because there are different standards in different places.  The higher emissions the US is screaming about can be dialed in to VWs sold in markets outside the US.  The US inspectors changed the settings and screamed foul, in order to provide D.C. with a means to blackmail VW.

I love a good conspiracy theory, but VW has admitted that its engineers used an algorithm that reduces emissions during emissions tests.  The vehicle senses the lack of rear wheel movement, and lack of steering input, and backs down emissions.  As soon as the car is back on the road, it starts emitting at much higher levels.

Thu, 10/01/2015 - 15:56 | 6617432 The Chief
The Chief's picture

Its engineering, not cheating. Chrysler, for over a decade, used to pump air into the exhaust to "reduce" emissions at the tail pipe....and actually only diluted them. Remember the smog pump?

VW actually reduced emissions when the car is sitting still at idle (at the RPM that the testing is conducted)...the very time that anyone within a breathing radius would want the car to reduce emissions the most.

In terms of raw pollutants, virtually every car GM makes pukes out more "stuff", including NOx, than does VW.

Its funny that GMs diesel isnt being attacked, because this testing methodology would be the similar for everyone...there are few things "new" in this business.

The krauts suck at the propoganda game when they are on the ropes. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of their wrath once they get a second wind, however.

Im thinking about conducting some private studies of samples of various new cars available via rental companies just to make the point, then releasing those results to the Tylers.

VW is getting screwed.

There is also the theory that the EPA blocks diesel entrants for reasons of lobbyists.  You can't get a diesel Subaru forester in the states, but it is okay anywhere else in the world.  They like to use the phrase, "US markets are not ready for diesel".  The truth is, the EPA has odd requirements that prevent entry.

The Euro Bluetec VW's get 80 mpg on diesel.

Cant have those here in the USSA because Big Oil told the EPA to say nein.

You'd be surprised what Big Oil gets away with compared to others in the scheme of environmental compliance.

My company does environmental consulting for a couple of refiners in the midwest, and the amount of free product they have floating on the groundwater surface next to major bodies of water (drinking water sources, no less) would have put other companies execs in jail.  The refiners get away with saying they are studying the problem and hope to have a final solution adopted by 2020.

EPA is a farce bought and paid for by the highest bidder.

Its not big oil that is the problem. Its the Chosenites that stash their ill-gotten gains in oil derivatives...even though they have no business in the stream.

These Chosenites will be revealed at some time in the future. If too much "future" passes and they elude the executioner's axe, then be assured that a proxy will replace them on the block.

Yes.  This is an attack by Nudelman and the zoligarchs against the Germans.  They and the red shield have been attacking and murdering Germans in their bankster wars for 300+ years.

VW-Audi is pretty stupid in that they should have just hired a Mercedes or BMW diesel engineer to do a better job.

This is an attack on Germany.

I thought I read BMW was mixed up in this as well.

For sure smog testing standards are being changed after the fact. I had a '95 Porsche 993 and I think those cars will have trouble passing California smog either already or in the near future. The idiots in Cali want to eliminate OBD1 cars. I thought OBD2 cars are now tested by just plugging into the computer and no longer need a dyno test with the sniffer. Now who here knows about the sniffers on onramps?

Agree.  Diesels put out much less "climate change" gases and are much more efficient than gasoline engines.

Why are they not going after the big Amerikan diesel trucks?  How about the semi's?  VW was just an easy target.

In 1980 my Dad had a diesel Rabbit that got 50 MPG with none of that emissions crap.  You telling me that isn't good for the environment compared to a lower compression spark plug banged, high octane gasoline guzzler?

Complete bullshit and utter lunacy.  "Look!  I can see the smoke!  OMG!"  Dumbshits.

They can stop wasting their time on a hybrid war, I (and others I know) would rather not drive anything if a hybrid was the only option. That is unless it's VW's diesel / electric hybrid.

As for the tdi situation the people I know who drive them will continue to drive them and just ignore the whole situation. My tdi conformed to emissions standards when it was built and is 50 state legal.

My neighbors complained about it after the VW cheating came out. My response was that they ought to look at their precious EPA greenhouse gas emissions rating, my tdi was 50% less than the Legacy AWD owned by one and half as bad as the Silverado owned by the other. That doesn't even count the barrels of oil consumed by their vehicles, which perpetuate a dependency on foreign oil...

Jim Willie says that the attack on VW diesel pollution standards is because the catalytic converters for these use platinum.  Platinum is 20X more rare than gold and 80% comes from S. African mines which are under stress.  Platinum is in extremely short supply and the price is heavily manipulated along with gold and silver.  If VW gets delivery of more platinum it will destroy the whole PM suppression scheme.

I thought that Diesel engines didn't produce carbon monoxide period, they need catalytic converters?  Because catalytic converters are only used to change CO to CO2.  I believe they were bitching about a different emission and this had nothing to do with Catalytic converters.

Combustion of any hydrocarbon produces CO, NOx and hydrocarbons.  Diesels definatly produce CO, just not as much as a gasoline engine.

The catalysts (platinum and palladium) in catalytic convertors convert CO to CO2, NOx into nitrogen and oxygen and hydrocarbons into water and CO2

Do you actually listen to Jim Willie - and - hold him accountable for *any of his claims?  What about his announcement in June:   Jim Willie reports that an assassination attempt was done on Secretary John Kerry when he was in France and that he was actually shot twice near the heart. He was taken to a Swiss hospital. Apparently the story of him falling off a bike was just a bogus story.

I think he spouts off some pretty irresponsible things.

There Is MUCH more used in diesel engine catalytic converters because they must also have an additional particulate catalytic converter.

http://www.thenational.ae/business/markets/volkswagen-diesel-engine-scan...

From the article:

That is based on industry estimates that autocatalysts in diesel-powered light-duty vehicles contain about 5.5 grams (of platinum) on average. Emissions-curbing catalysts in petrol cars use about 4.5 grams of palladium.

It's not emission standards, it's carbon dioxide standards that VW fucked up which the big fat fucking guvamints of the world have made an issue.

CO2 emissions are complete bullshit - the world is just fine with current and much higher CO2 levels.

But if you say it over and over again, the truth doesn't matter.  CO2 levels bad - skuzie while I fart.

In the meantime, wait about a month for VW sales to go to zero and get down to a dealership and go buy a great car that is likely discounted huge.

Thanks for buying into the CO2 bullshit VW.  My bank account thanks you too.  FUCKING SOCIALISTS!!

As far as I can make sense of this http://www3.epa.gov/otaq/consumer/420f08025.pdf you really have to question the EPA standards  Enron Carbon coal, industrial exporters and labor wage exploiters.    I have not seen a thing so far on an engineering prospective that convincinces me of anything but  dual standards  for GM Ford Cat Cummings Diesels.  Now I don't have the time to go Richard Gage (like  National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) report 911).  The report is there ...  Reminds me of the Acid rain cash settlement to regulators and government not spending a dime on cleaning it up but did manage to get there railroad cronies to ship Wy coal east and Ky coal to China and oh yea how about the transport windfalls...        The university engineers  have this problem where they are not good engineers and I expect when the FEA on combustion  and steady state thermo comes out there is more to the story than appears..    Why else is USSA stopping 300mpg carbon fiber diesel or 90mpg Jetta wagons from being sold in USSA...   perhaps the same reason GE can sell plastics to Saudis (of course USSA huge Natural gas source)....   Yea don't think the Germans want to be held hostage to any Oil Cartel.    These guys have gone too far...  CO2 bullshit..    Wag the DOG criminal profiteers  that simple.....    Yea and the WMD BS for endless war....     Got Idea  Have 270 FED banks get there 6% on reserves to put the GSE paper back on MBS  creators, How about every government pension confiscated  above say E6 or something like 2x average wage...   same deal with the companies that sent 4000 lawyers to work on trade deals illegally against Congress...
